The University has responded to the challenges of the times. PUP President Dr. Emanuel C. While we, the Filipinos, are known for our resiliency during disasters and tragedies, we are also known for our bayanihan, which ‘embodies mutual assistance and self-help among equals or togetherness in a common effort’. We can do this. We need to do this. Our brothers and sisters are waiting,” Pres De Guzman said. As per instruction of President De Guzman, the Community Relations and Extension for Development Office (CREDO) was delegated as the main coordinating office within the University to undertake relief operations and other related activities. The CREDO in response spearheaded PUP Operation Damayan which coordinated relief operations with the University campuses, colleges, offices and organizations. A total of 500 relief packs (each containing 10 kilos of rice, 15 packs of noodles, nine pieces of canned goods), 500 containers of 2.4 liters of water and 500 bags of new and used clothes for men, women and children were prepared for distribution. Luna and his co-researchers won two out of the five Surya Raghu and the Samahang Pisika ng Visayas at Mindanao (SPVM) awards during the 2013 International Conference on Applied Physics and Materials Science (ICAMS), the 2013 International Scientific Meeting on Complex Systems and the 15th SPVM National Physics Conference held at the Ateneo de Davao University, Davao City, Philippines from October 24 to 26. The researchers’ papers garnered the Best Entrepreneurial Paper and the Best Scientific Poster recognitions. The activity had 400 member-participants from different regions in the Philippines and delegates from Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Pakistan, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain. The study entitled “Building of a Paper-Super Capacitor using Carbon Electrode Derived from Cocoa Powder” by Reynold V. Luna, John Carlo Elmaguin, Bryan San Diego, and Evelyn Matchete of the PUP Department of Physical Sciences, College of Science was awarded under the Lecture Demo/Conceptual category. The researchers fabricated an improvised paper super capacitor using carbon derived from cocoa tablets with an average capacitance of 1.85 F, working voltage of 17 V, and operating current of 3A. Based on the data and observation of the researchers the capacitance of the fabricated super capacitor is proportional to the weights applied. The total expenditure per fabricated super capacitor is Php 30.00 which is cheaper than a commercial super capacitor. Strong winds, heavy rains, falling trees - our house was totally destroyed.” This was how Divina Intripido, a 43-year-old banana plantation worker from Mindanao, described their experience during the onslaught of Typhoon Pablo. She is a resident of Brgy. Osmeña, Compostela, Compostela Valley Province. Her family was one of those affected by the typhoon. They lost their main source of livelihood. Their house was totally damaged. They are still struggling to recover from their painful experience. Nanay Divina was teary eyed as she recalled their frightening experience during the typhoon. “I was with my grandchildren when the typhoon ravaged our community. We wanted to go to the house of my eldest son but we couldn’t go outside due to strong winds and heavy rains. The banana trees were uprooted, the roofs of many houses were flying and we could barely see the road.” Another banana plantation worker, Ruth Teopiz, 33, also shared her family’s experience. “The typhoon came early in the morning. My husband and I were already preparing to get to work but we were very hesitant to leave our house because of the heavy rains. My husband and I were afraid to leave our three children behind without any companion or someone who will look after them. It was our first time to experience that kind of rain combined with strong winds.” “We were all traumatized, most especially our children. We were not aware of the storm signals and we really didn’t expect that kind of rain and winds. Now, we are afraid even of light rains.” Nanay Ruth’s family also lost their house. The plantation is still closed, leaving Nanay Divina, Nanay Ruth and other workers with no source of income. They are still not sure if the plantation will continue its operation after the damage brought by the typhoon. Our beloved Polytechnic University of the Philippines reached out to the victims of Typhoon Pablo in spite of the fact that many members of the PUP community also come from the economically-challenged sectors of the Philippine society. Nanay Divina and Nanay Ruth along with Lovely Barrios, Judy Batallador and Gloria Delantes are the beneficiaries of the housing project initiated by the Citizens Disaster Response Center (CDRC) through the PUP Operation Damayan (POD). Contributions from PUP faculty and employees were used to construct five (5) core shelters for the survivors of Typhoon Pablo in Compostela Valley. The beneficiaries themselves were involved in the project. They also helped in the construction of their own houses. They expressed their deepest gratitude towards the donors and project implementers. As Nanay Divina said, “Thank you PUP for helping us here in Compostela Valley. We are happy that among thousands of families who lost their homes during the typhoon we were selected to be the beneficiaries of your project. Our new home is a sign that there is still hope and we will continue to struggle and overcome life’s many challenges.” (MARY CLAIRE ANN J. MOSTOLES)
