PUP Undertakes Relief Operations
for ‘Yolanda’ Victims
A
fter the Eastern Visayas provinces and other parts of
the country were battered by super-typhoon Yolanda
on November 8, members of the PUP community
staged relief operations and various activities to solicit
help for the victims. The University has responded to the
challenges of the times.
PUP President Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman has issued
a letter of appeal to the community stating that “One people
who die in our midst, is far too many. One of our countrymen,
crying for help, is far too many for comfort and assistance.”
“We, in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines
(PUP) academic community, are asking everyone to help
our beloved countrymen, who were victims of the supertyphoon Yolanda. While we, the Filipinos, are known for our
resiliency during disasters and tragedies, we are also known
for our bayanihan, which ‘embodies mutual assistance and
self-help among equals or togetherness in a common effort’.
We can do this. We need to do this. Our brothers and sisters
are waiting,” Pres De Guzman said.
As per instruction of President De Guzman, the
Community Relations and Extension for Development Office
(CREDO) was delegated as the main coordinating office
within the University to undertake relief operations and other
related activities. The CREDO in response spearheaded PUP
Operation Damayan which coordinated relief operations with
the University campuses, colleges, offices and organizations.
As of November 20, the University has collected 7,646
bottled water; 7,881 packs of noodles; 2,800 pieces of
toiletries; 4,680 pieces of canned goods, biscuits, coffee,
juices, candles and matchboxes among others.
CREDO’s Barya-Barya Mula sa mga Iskolar ng Bayan
campaign has also raised P164,949.70 as of November 19.
On the other hand, as of November 20, the University
has collected P549,000.00 from employees and faculty
members who shared their one-night service pay or
donations equivalent to a three-hour teaching load.
To facilitate the immediate distribution of relief and other
donations, the CREDO with other university employees
and volunteers, proceeded last November 22 to Guiuan in
Eastern Samar, one of the severely-hit places by supertyphoon Yolanda.
A total of 500 relief packs (each containing 10 kilos of
rice, 15 packs of noodles, nine pieces of canned goods), 500
containers of 2.4 liters of water and 500 bags of new and
used clothes for men, women and children were prepared
for distribution.
In addition, three sacks of toiletries, 26 boxes of biscuits,
10 sacks of blankets and pillows, three sacks of shoes,
sandals and slippers, three boxes of medicines and first-aid
materials, five boxes of sanitary napkins and three boxes of
diapers were also included for the relief operation.
The relief operations and other related activities involved
members of IPOD V (I am a PUP Operation Damayan
Volunteer), 1,134 volunteer students, faculty members,
employees, janitors, and alumni.

as future collaborations especially of the two universities.
With the representatives from PUP sharing their thoughts
about art and tradition preservation issues, the discussion
was successfully carried out at the Regent’s building in UI.
Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia, Maria Rosario
Aguinaldo, met with the PUP faculty and Lakandayang
representatives and had a talk on cultural and national
issues, especially of the recent calamity brought about by
typhoon Yolanda.
The last leg of the workshop took place at the
Jungle Land theme park located at Sentul, Indonesia.
Here, lead choreographers Jonas C. Gatchalian of
the College of Education Dance Troupe and Lucricio
Adena of the Movers and Motions taught Buling-buling
and hip-hop to the in-house dancers of the theme
park. They also taught UI students the same dances
during the dance workshop held at the said university.
Through the coordination of Ms. Kriztine R. Viray and
Mr. Reylan B. Viray, the dance workshop and collaboration
performance of the different dance groups was made
possible. They hope that this first collaborative effort would
provide more avenues and opportunities for students to help
and promote our cultural heritage.

PUPLHS Shines at 59
The PUP Laboratory High School celebrated its 59th founding
anniversary from November 14 to 15 with the theme, “PUPLHS: A
Diamond @ 59 Pre-Cut”, a prequel to the Diamond celebration next
year.
The celebration started with the arrival honors for Prof. Serapia F.
Serencio, the school’s commandant for almost three decades, and the
flag-raising ceremonies hosted by the PUPLHS Citizen Advancement
Training I (CAT-I) Unit on November 14. Prof. Serencio, in her
speech, recounted her experience as teacher and commandant in
PUPLHS. She also mentioned how great the school is because of the
collaborative efforts of the administrators, faculty and students. The
said program was followed by a Mass at the PUP Interfaith Chapel
and a fellowship service at the Physics Laboratory.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the traditional
Banchetto. Right after the Mass and the fellowship, guests and officials
joined the ribbon cutting ceremony. Different organizations put up their
booths and showcased the products sold at the PUPLHS grounds.
The objective of the event was to enhance the entrepreneurial skills
of the students. Booths displayed street foods and other authentic
Filipino food.
The new Laboratory Store also opened on November 14. The
ribbon cutting was spearheaded by the Vice President for Academic
Affairs, Dr. Samuel M. Salvador, Principal Corazon C. Tahil, the PCCPUP LHS Alumni Association headed by Ms. Cora Sta. Ana, faculty,
and PUPLHS students. The store is located at the former Industrial Arts
Shop. The store commits itself to selling healthy foods as prescribed
by the Department of Education. The store opening was then followed
by a fellowship lunch at the Multi-Purpose Hall.
The founding celebration also showcased the talents of PUPLHS
students through the first-ever “The Voice of PUPLHS.” Academic
contests were also conducted days prior to the anniversary. This is to
further enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the students and
to develop strong camaraderie and healthy competition among the
contestants. This was organized by the different student organizations.
The PUPLHS has always been grateful for the assistance coming
from its Alumni Association. They have been consistently helping their
alma mater and have actively joined the various activities conducted
by the school.

roofs of many houses were flying and we could barely see the road.”
Another banana plantation worker, Ruth Teopiz, 33, also shared her family’s
experience. “The typhoon came early in the morning. My husband and I were
already preparing to get to work but we were very hesitant to leave our house
because of the heavy rains. My husband and I were afraid to leave our three
children behind without any companion or someone who will look after them. It
was our first time to experience that kind of rain combined with strong winds.”
“We were all traumatized, most especially our children. We were not aware of
the storm signals and we really didn’t expect that kind of rain and winds. Now, we
are afraid even of light rains.”
Nanay Ruth’s family also lost their house. The plantation is still closed, leaving
Nanay Divina, Nanay Ruth and other workers with no source of income. They are
still not sure if the plantation will continue its operation after the damage brought
by the typhoon.
Our beloved Polytechnic University of the Philippines reached out to the victims
of Typhoon Pablo in spite of the fact that many members of the PUP community
also come from the economically-challenged sectors of the Philippine society.
Nanay Divina and Nanay Ruth along with Lovely Barrios, Judy Batallador and
Gloria Delantes are the beneficiaries of the housing project initiated by the Citizens
Disaster Response Center (CDRC) through the PUP Operation Damayan (POD).
Contributions from PUP faculty and employees were used to construct five (5) core
shelters for the survivors of Typhoon Pablo in Compostela Valley. The beneficiaries
themselves were involved in the project. They also helped in the construction of
their own houses.
They expressed their deepest gratitude towards the donors and project
implementers. As Nanay Divina said, “Thank you PUP for helping us here in
Compostela Valley. We are happy that among thousands of families who lost their
homes during the typhoon we were selected to be the beneficiaries of your project.
Our new home is a sign that there is still hope and we will continue to struggle and
overcome life’s many challenges.”
