The sweeps and raffles got lots of laughs making all the hard work well worth the effort. The photos speak for themselves of our support. Many letters of thanks for the donations and help have been sent. A good day had. We are having an Adelaide Cup Bbq (March 10th) very informal and very laid back. Hopefully the New shed for our recycling will be built by then and we can have a Beer & Snag social day. All Welcome. Once again thanks to all who donated on the Day. How are your character “cut outs” going? Some very funny ideas are floating around. You can make your character boards out of any material such as cardboard , plywood etc and don’t forget to make them kid friendly when cutting out the holes to stick your head through. Once again Tom Hawthorn will donate the snags and a donation tin will be left at the BBQ table with all proceeds to the Flying Doctor Service. Don’t forget to Slip, Slop , Slap & bring your seat & liquids along. Anyone needing cardboard can see Tom he has plenty. Couple of Ideas of cut outs Friday Night Monthly BBQ We had our last Friday night monthly Barbie for the year. Its been a great way to meet & mingle & tell some fishing lies & they will continue from the 7th February 2014. Hope to see you all there. 2 THE PINEY NEWS Snakes Emergency Plan Snakes are actively going about their business. Be diligent with your yard cleanups to discourage them from overstaying their welcome. The Vet surgeries are busy this time of year when Pet animals come into contact and are bitten. Very few people are unlucky enough to be bitten as we are smart enough to not aggravate them if in contact. Please remember that Yorketown & Wallaroo are the only two Hospitals on Yorke Peninsula that have the anti-venom to be administered!! If you have a problem & wish to remove a snake call a Professional Peter Turner from YP Snake Catcher (Moonta) Can help out. Call 0416 402 569 Be Bushfire Ready– Everyone was delivered a household folder in 2011 thanks to Lorraine Bell. Phil Hermann spoke of Council obligations, dog control, illegal camping, vandals, fire control, illegal riding of trail bikes etc & was very receptive of our own problem areas. Over 2000 letters requiring property owners to reduce their properties of fire hazards were sent out this season. Keep up the good work Phil. A fair effort along the beach at low tide from BHP hill to the start of our walking trail & onto Piney. They were very well organised with food, water etc & thoroughly enjoyed our side of the Coast. They aim to promote the Council initiative of creating a Trail around the whole of the Peninsula (Thanks Goldy at DCYP). We believe the first leg to be constructed will be James Well to Pine Point (yet to be confirmed) & will take in our Magnificent Clifftop views. Pictured below is Philomena & her Group. Happy Trails. Phil Hermann - DCYP Senior Compliance Officer KEEP AUSTRALIA BEAUTIFUL You may have seen a New Progress Trailer working around town. Allen Tolfts & Co. secured a grant from “ Keep Australia Beautiful” to allow us to continue fundraising through our Recycling Programme. Early next year the boys will build new cages for our deposit sites & fit out the shed with racks & sorting tables. Great job Allen, Carol & Jim Sandford! Thanks “Keep Australia Beautiful” 3 PINEY NEWS Hillside Dust David McLean (Environmental Co-ordinator) from Rex has provided a baseline (current levels) dust monitoring summary for the proposed Hillside Copper Mine, Port of Ardrossan & surrounds including Pine Point. The baseline dust monitoring program has been occurring for 2 years. The summary discusses methods of monitoring & managing dust levels before & once proposed operations begin. The baseline programme includes: Deposition Gauges: measuring the dust particles that settle out of the air. Rex currently has 17 dust deposition gauges around the site (as shown in photo). High Volume Sampler: which draws a constant flow of air through a filter for analysing total dust in the air. EBAM Monitor: measures the small sized particles (less than 10 microns [PM10] which is not visible to the human eye) every 10 mins. PM10 is important as it has the potential to be inhaled & cause an impact to people’s health. The weather station & monitoring systems will be used to influence mining operation procedures as required. Rex’s real-time dust monitoring will send “live” notifications that will allow Rex to respond rapidly by either increasing dust control measures or scaling back operations. For more information David is available on: mobile: 0439 010 400 or email Rex Minerals on [email protected] Left: Dust Monitor Right: Weather Station YPLOG The Yorke Peninsula Land Owners Group have been very active with Hillside Mine concerns. They have been researching proposed copper production issues and engaged specialist advisors to inform on areas at risk. eg. pollution, noise, water, dust, farming, tourism & future expansion. An expensive mission with the aim of protecting the Peninsula. They are now calling for funds to continue their work on everyone's behalf. Many meetings, submissions & Ministerial visits at Parliament House have been held. Donations can be made & forwarded to : Treasurer : Carolyn Clift YP Land Owners Group c/o Ardrossan Post Office Ardrossan SA 5571 cheques made payable to YP Land Owners For more information on YPLOG their website is www.yplandowners.com.au On the 3rd November Rex Minerals held an information day for the public at the Ardrossan Town Hall at this day questions could be asked to Rex Minerals CEO Mark Parry. Item of concern was the contamination of rainwater tanks from the dust particles as a lot of people in the areas concerned rely on tank water only. Answer given was they would test tanks before operations & during operations. If you would like your tank tested contact Rex Minerals through their website www.rexminerals.com.au or write to Rex Minerals PO BOX 3435 Rundle Mall, SA 5000 Concerned Residents of Pine Point & surrounding area Rallying on the steps of Parliament House 4 The Pine Point Progress Association Inc. WHITING TROPHY Biker, Antique or Retro wasn’t sure nice one Lenny Editor : Karsha Bright Email: [email protected] Kym Qualmann has been busy making the bragging rights trophy for the biggest King George Whiting each year. Doug Smith presented one to Gavin at the Caravan Park to be measured a wrist breaker at 50cm. Looks like Doug will get his name on the Trophy which is up at the Caravan Park Office. Don McLean came a close 2nd with 48cm. Fish this size are rarely seen in our local waters so you can be forgiven thinking it is a Snook. This seasons competition closes at the time of printing the December Newsletter & starts again 1st January 2014. Speaking of big fish. Check out the photo of Dans Mulloway, recently caught at the bottom of Yorkes. One for the Big Boys not the Old Boys.
