Foreword
This account is the result of 20 years of work. Getting access to aircraft information in Turkey is always
NOT easy and when researching military aviation it becomes DIFFICULT. After many years of visits and
cooperation with the Turkish Air Force one should think a door was open. In the beginning of this
century suddenly the Army Aviation opened up, they held open houses and made an internal well
produced magazine. One could get interviews and ask for information. However, when it came to
important historical details like serial numbers, number of aircraft delivered and fates of aircraft
nothing could be produced. Whether this is because of some kind of security measure or because this
information is so deeply kept in archives that it cannot be found – I don’t know!
But the 20 years of work has almost uncovered what there is to find about the aircraft delivered to
Turkish Ground Forces, that is the Army, the Jandarma Forces and the Police organisation from bits
and pieces, foreign sources and a network of aircraft enthusiasts. Until 20 years ago practically not a
single photo from these forces had appeared, but nowadays photos of current types are plentiful.
With regards to photos of the older aircraft they also appear now when young aviation minded
persons find old family albums. To some degree the army itself has recently published accounts and
pictures from the early days. I have been lucky enough to get to know persons who’s fathers were
army flyers and they have provided information and photos from the Piper Cub days.
The Army Aviation Command is today a separate command which has gained operational matureness
from almost 20 years of internal security operations. It is today self-sufficient in the important fields of
training and maintenance and is supported by a large professional cadre of personnel. Today the force
master the delicate co-operation of the various branches of ground forces and has written its own
doctrine in operating attack-, transport, troop insertion, special forces, SAR/CSAR, and remotely
controlled machines.
I can only ask readers of this account to provide me with corrections and further information. This will
be published on my website: [email protected]

A HISTORY OF ARMY AVIATION
Until 1944 the Turkish Air Force was a part of the army. On January 31 that year the air force became an independent command.
From 1948 the United States assisted the Turkish Armed Forces into becoming an up-to-date military organisation. Large amounts of
equipment were transferred, to make the force more effective. Among the initial equipment arriving were 15 AOP (Air observation
post) L-4J aircraft. These aircraft were intended for spotting and direction for the Army’s artillery units and an organisation had to be
formed for their use. The US Army system was adopted under which small flights were detached directly to Army Corps and Division
artillery units.
The ‘Kara Ordusu Topçu Havaciliği (The Army Artillery Aviation)’ was formed in 1948 and a number of officers from artillery regiments
were posted to the Türk Hava Kurumu in order to be provided with flying training. Basic training was given on Magister trainers and
operational training on the L-4Js. From 1948-52 210 officers were trained. Operational training and initial operations were conducted
by the ‘Topçu Okulu Hava Grubo (The Artillery School’s Air Group)’ at Polatli which was given the first fifteen L-4Js. Parallel with the
training, AOP-Flights called ‘Topçu Alayi Hava Kismi’ were formed with the various Corps and Division artillery units. Overall command
was exercised by the ‘Hava Grup Komuntanliği (Air Group Command)’ at Polatli. In 1950 two Turkish L-18B aircraft, with national
markings, were detached to the Turkish Brigade in Korea later being replaced by L-19As. Two crew members were killed there while
performing their duties.
From 1950 onwards hundreds of Piper Super Cubs of the marks L-18B, L-18C and L-21B were received and distributed to an increasing number of ‘Hava Kismi’. In 1958 the Headquarters and Flying School was moved to Ankara’s former civil airfield at Güverçinlik. Further, in 1959, the flying school was renamed ‘Kara Havacilik Okulu (Army Flying School)’ as a start of unit consolidation. In June
1961, a re-organisation started which led to the formation of Hava Bölükler (Air Companies) under major formations and Hava
Gruplar (Air Groups) under Divisions, Brigades and some special units.
This reorganisation was the start of a modernisation of the force in the sixties. First the Super Cubs were replaced by O-1Es and U17A/Bs in 1963 and 1965 and helicopters were included in 1966 when Bell OH-13S spotting, TH-13T training helicopters and
AB204B transport helicopters were delivered.
The next consolidation of units started in 1971 when Bölükler and Gruplar were paired into Hava Taburu (Air Battalions) and a year
later a ‘Hava Alayi (Air regiment)’ was formed under each of the three Armies and a ‘Hava Taburu (Air Battalion)’ under each of nine
Army Corps. At Güverçinlik/Ankara a Helicopter Battalion was formed with more transport helicopters rapidly arriving. In 1974 the air
units were active in the Cyprus operations and the Helicopter Battalion was assigned to the 2nci Hava Alayi deploying 22 helicopters, some modified as gunships, with 44 pilots. The same year the flying school was formed into a large organisation comprising the
Helicopter Battalion, an Air Liaison Group with gradually a large number of light transport aircraft and the flying school itself with fixedwing trainers and helicopters. By 1979 the Super Cub was also replaced in the training role by 40 Bellanca Citabrias and 25
Cessna T-41Ds.
During the eighties the Army Flying Organisation greatly expanded into a modern force of several hundred vehicles with the
procurement of AB205s and local assembly of UH-1H helicopters. Late in the decade it was decided to form an attack helicopter force
and this started with the delivery of the first five AH-1Ws in 1990, soon supplemented with five more and 28 AH-1Ps. After initial
work up they were organised into a ‘Taarruz Helikopter Taburu (Attack Helicopter Battalion)’ in 1996 with three ‘Filos’ (squadrons) at
Güverçinlik and operational detachments where needed. The transport helicopter force was widely modernised with the inclusion of 45
S-70s and twenty Cougars, the helicopters being in battalions formed under each Alayi. During the nineties the aviation units have
been further centralised and optimised with a reduction of Hava Taburus. During the eighties and nineties training was not forgotten
and in 1994 the EDOK (Training and Doctrine Command) was formed transforming training into a modern process. The Kara
Havacilik was by now been totally modernised, its capacity enormously increased and operational capability matured not least
because of the operations forced upon it in Eastern Turkey by the Kurdish insurgency. The Kara Ordusu Havaciliği was tremendously
strengthened in the last few years. The force has modernised both its operational and training organisations. The complement has
been more evenly divided along the borders away from the heavy concentration of forces along the Russian border and became four
Regiments with rapid deployable assault helicopters supported by a force of attack gunships. This modern force consisted in 2000 of
152 UH-1H’s, 65 S-70A’s and 29 AS532UL’s being supported by a little more than 40 gunships. A small fleet of special mission and
transport aircraft was avialable in the form of four Beech King Airs, three Ce421Bs and two to three CN235s.
The training organisation EDOC was streamlined into an all helicopter syllabus with AB206R’s and UH-1H’s. A dwindling force of T41D’s and U-17B’s being kept for tactical training and T-42A’s for twin-engine conversion.

With the operational pressure of the insurgence in Eastern Turkey reducing, the Army is now replacing or modernizing old
equipment. The re-engining and modernisation of 90 of the UH-1H force is almost done. The supply of 52 new S-70A-28 helicopters
has been completed and the modernisation of the old and some new ones with digital cockpits fills the workshops of TAI (project
Yarasa). The Phoenix-I project for modernising the current force of AS532s is completed and all ten new ones are completed. The
Special Forces have a completely new complement of ten specially modified S-70As and two to three CN235Ms. A search and
rescue organisation has been set up by the Army using specially equipped S-70As and Cougars.
On 15 August 2003 the army aviation organisation became an independent command under the Army HQ exercising command of
all units amalgated under 4 new Air Regiments . The training organisation EDOC was abolished and instead a “Kara Havacilik Okul
Komutanliği was created. Training became an all helicopter syllabus with AB.206R’s and UH-1H’s. A dwindling force of T-41D’s
and U-17B’s were replaced by a 46 stong fleet of digital T.182T’s and T-42A’s for twin-engine conversion. One ground station and
six General Atomics GNAT 750’s UAV’s were delivered in 2000 with a second batch being ordered. Since 2006 an order for 60
attack helicopters of the type T.129 was agreed with Agusta to be produced by TAI and 14 CH-47F heavy transport helicopters are
on order.

With aluminium propeller. Two batches each of 34 L-18C’s for MDAP countries were shipped from the USA in September
and October 1950 of which 40 were to be delivered to Turkey (50-1745 to 50-1794) and these were officially taken on

replacement for the 8 L-18B’s (50-1801-3, 1805-9). Later more batches arrived between aug51 and nov51 totalling 44 and finally
15 in sep53 for a total of 117. Codes probably 114-232
Twenty-six aircraft were donated to THK in 1973 when the type was withdrawn from use and others were eventually sold to private
users.

Bell OH-13S/TH-13T, Agusta-Bell AB.47G-3B-1
Quantity: -66/10-
Service Period: 1964/66 - 1991
Service History:
st
As the service’s first helicopter type an initial batch of 5 was received June 1 1966 to be followed by 71
more over the next years. 66 OH-13Ss in AOP version replaced Super Cubs in many reconnaissance flights
and later, until 1991, both the OH-13S and T training version was the main training helicopter. In 1975 the
AB47G-3B production line at Agusta was reopened to handle orders placed by the Turkish Army and
Gendarmerie, which decided to resort to the proven reliability and simplicity of these machines and therefore
causing an unexpected ‘revival’ for this type of machine. Six examples were delivered. The Jandarma AB47Gs were
later transferred to the flying school. The type was retired in December 1991 after several crashes caused by
structural failure.
A substantial number of Bell OH-13s have been delivered to the army and served as light observation and training
helicopters until 1991. The Bell TH-13T was the standard training by the H300 in 1991 helicopter at Güverçinlik
until replaced by the AB.206R.

AB.204B/Bell UH-1B
Quantity: - 18/36 - Service Period: 1966-2006
Service History:
The AB.204B became the second helicopter type to serve with the Turkish Army when the first of eighteen were delivered in
March 1966, some as gunships. In 1974 they became the first Turkish helicopters, together with a number of the larger UH-1Hs, to
serve in anger when they were deployed to Cyprus. About twelve survivors later served in the training role at Güverçinlik. UH-1Bs
of similar type were transferred from the US Army in 1971 and more were probably supplemented later in 1978.
AB.204B:
Some in gunship version. Batch later renumbered in 10450-495 range for use by the helicopter school. The following batch was origi
nally built for Jandarma use (and actually seriailled in the J-3171 thru J-3188 range) but has never been taken up by the Jandarma.

Bell AH-1P/S, TAH-1P Cobra
Quantity: -36-
Service Period: 1993-
Service
History:
To supplement the AH-1W, a number of AH-1P/S was offered by the USA and the Turkish Army received 36 ex US Army Cobras in
five batches; six AH-1P in early 1993, seven AH-1P each on June 3 and August 16, 1993; twelve AH-1S on March 5, 1995 and four
TAH-1P on March 29, 1995. The TAH-1P were necessary as no simulators had been purchased. The capability of the AH-1s
was somewhat restricted so an upgrade programme was decided upon. This work began on July 10, 1995, and the maiden flight
was on May 23, 1997. Subsequently all the AH-1P/S Cobras have been upgraded, carried out in association with IAI of Israel. The
improve- ments are the addition of a 20mm cannon, Tactical Navigation System (TNS), ALQ-144 1R suppresser, improved internal
wiring and AN/APR-39V (3) and ARC-182 self-defence systems to counteract the SA-7 missiles acquired by the PKK terrorist
group.
The AH-1P attack helicopter has been modified with night vision equipment and provides the the Army’s attack capabi lity.

When, in the late seventies, a replacement was needed for the Super Cub in the training role the Citabria won the contract due
to its qualities as an agile and easily maintainable aircraft. Guarantees for support and spareparts were given by the
manufacturer. The aircraft were assembled by Army personnel at Güverçinlik in late 1979 early 1980. Withdrawn in 1999.

.
Quantity: -10- Service Period: 2010Service History:
Contract in April 2005 for the manufacture of three unmanned aerial vehicle systems, including 10 aircraft, surveillance equipment
and ground control stations. The contract is part of a 183-million-dollar project in which Turkish firms were to provide sub-systems
and services amounting to 30 percent of the project. In late 2008 Turkish media reported that Turkey had returned the only two
planes to have been delivered on grounds they failed to meet the required technical norms concerning flying altitude and time. At the
time IAI had leased a Searcher UAV to Turkey, but it crashed during tests in Dec.2008. Since then the 10 aircraft have been used
extensively on Turkish southern border.

Contract signed 7.Sep.2007 for 51 machines plus 41 options. Project leader is TAI with 5 prototypes to be made, 3 in Italy and 2 in
Turkey. The first prototype flew successfully on 28.Sep.2009. The first 30 aircraft will be a the TUC-1 version the next 20 of the TUC-2.
First to be delivered to TUArmy in 2013. 9 examples of a basic B-Model was ordered in 2010.
A contract for 51 T-129Bs for the TKK, with options on a further 41, was signed on September 7, 2007. Because of the urgent requirement
for new attack helicopters, a subsequent contract was signed with Agusta/Westland on November 8, 2010, for the nine T-129A ATAK
EDH variants, in order to enable early delivery of these basic versions. Acceptance tests by the TKK of the first of these (P4) are
scheduled to commence in early July.
The first of five development prototypes (two built in Italy and three in Turkey), P1, performed its maiden flight on September 28, 2009, at
AgustaWestland’s factory in Vergiate, Italy. However, it was subsequently lost in an accident on March 20, 2010. The first of the three
T129 prototypes that will be assembled by TAI, P6, made its maiden flight in Ankara on August 17, 2011. Initial deliveries of full production
standard T-129B examples are scheduled to begin in 2013, with an in-service date of 2014 anticipated.

HARITA Kitaati/Genel Komuntanliği
(Survey and Mapping Command)
The Army’s aerial survey and mapping agency (HARITA) has a long connection with aircraft operations going back to operating a
Junkers F13 photo survey aircraft in 1925. After having used Mosquito, Beechcraft D18S and T-11A aircraft operated by the Air Force an
independent HARITA Keşif Birligi (Mapping Recce Unit) was formed at Güverçinlik in 1968. Since then a fleet of Do28Bs (4) and
Do28Ds (10) has been operated. The agency was renamed HARITA Genel Komutanliği on September 11, 1983 and theKeşif Birligi was
replaced by a HARITA Hava Grup in 1990. In 1995 the fleet consisted of six Do28Ds and two Beech King Air 200s.
Aircraft used for aerial survey intermittently on loan were: DH84 (1201), C-47A (6003), AT-11 (6088, 6900)

Jandarma Genel Komutanliği
The Turkish Jandarma has roots long back in history but its mo- dern organisation was established in 1923 with the creation of the
modern republic. With the formation of Army helicopter units in the late sixties it was decided also to provide the Jandarma
commando units with helicopters. Consequently a Jandarma Aviation unit was established in 1968. Initial equipment was a number
of AB206As procured in Italy. An international supported component was added in the early seventies with a small number of
aircraft and two mobile photo-labs used for spotting illegal drugs growing. In 1983 expansion followed and more helicopters of the
AB205 type was ordered. Due to the terrorist campaign waged by the Kurdish PKK the Jandarma force has constantly been
expanded and modernised during the late eighties and early nineties and the new Black Hawk helicopters were delivered to Jandarma
forces before the army itself received any. The next expansion planned is for a small attack helicopter contingent.
1968:
Formation of first unit at Diyarbakir with four AB206As
1970:
Formation of first Jandarma Helikopter Bölüğü (Güverçinlik/Ankara)
