User Interface
Getting Started Screen
The Getting Started screen is the screen you will see when you launch Lectora. The Getting
Started screen provides several different ways to create a new project or course, open existing
content, access valuable learning resources, find the latest in Lectora news, access ReviewLink
and the Lectora Inspire tools, find your product serial number.
Ribbon-Based Feature
Organisation
Lectora uses a ribbon-based layout with task-based ribbons. The ribbons provide access to
objects, tools and wizards you can use to build your course.
Ribbon-Based Object
Properties
Contextual object properties ribbons appear as you select objects in your course. Use these
context-sensitive ribbons to access object properties and other object-specific features.
Thumbnail View
Quickly locate pages in your course using the Thumbnail View.
Title Explorer
See the entire structure of your content in the Title Explorer. Build your course using Chapters,
Sections and Pages. Drag and drop objects and pages to reorder them and turn off an object’s
visibility on the Canvas Area when you work with groups and layers.
Canvas Area
The canvas is your work space where you can drag and drop files, resize and move objects and
create the overall design of your course or project.
Grids and Guides
Display grids and guides on the canvas area to help you align and position objects on a page and
ensure consistent design across all pages.
Action Pane
The Action Pane allows you to view the details of and organise all actions tied to a Chapter,
Section, Page or object. Add, delete and reorder actions all within the Action Pane.
Viewing Modes
Use Lectora’s three basic modes - Edit, Run and Preview - to develop and test your content. Edit
mode is Lectora’s default mode. This is the mode you use when you develop a course. Run and
Preview modes allow you to test the interactive components of your content and see what your
viewers will experience.
Preview in Browser
Preview a page of your course in any one of your installed browsers. All actions and objects are
rendered in HTML.
Media Library
A convenient Slide-Out Media Library provides one-click access to all the media that is currently
in your course, media available in your personal library and stock media that can be inserted into
your course.
Status Bar
The status bar provides dynamic information on the current position of the mouse cursor on the
page, as well as information about the currently selected object. Use the status bar to change an
object’s size and position, change modes, align objects and zoom in on the Canvas Area.
Product Information Center
Product documentation is available from the main Lectora interface, and specific product
information is available by selecting the “Help” button where available. You’ll find endless
descriptions and instructions for using all of the features, objects, tools and wizards available in
Lectora.
External Content
Organisation
Lectora copies, organises and stores all necessary files into one easy-to-access directory, keeping
your projects well organised and easy to access.

Getting Started
Create Blank Titles
Create a new course from scratch and let your imagination drive your content creation.
Import PowerPoint
Import a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation to quickly create a new course. Lectora will convert
text, objects and animations into their equivalent text blocks, objects and transitions in Lectora.
Design Wizard
The Design Wizard guides you through creating a course by setting up your title options, choosing a
title size and theme and creating the structure of your content.
Title Wizards
Choose from a wide variety of professionally created Title Wizards to quickly create the look and
framework of your course. These helpful Wizards will walk you through the steps needed to
complete your course. You’ll save time and have a great starting point for content creation.
Personal Template Gallery
Save a general version of your course as a custom template to share across your organisation.
Quickly create a new course using your custom template for a consistent look and feel.
Online Template Gallery
Access more than 250 templates right from Lectora, conveniently categorised and with helpful
descriptions of each. You’ll find templates for tablets, smartphones and traditional content.
Open Titles
If you have recently worked on a course, you can open it directly from the Getting Started window.
Recent titles are listed on the right-hand side of the Getting Started window. Or, you can browse
and select any existing course to resume development.
Access Learning Resources
In addition to the Information Center, you can access Video Tutorials, take a self-paced Click and
Learn demonstration, download Sample Titles, ask a question on our Community Forum and visit
Lectora University for even more helpful resources.

Chapter, Section and Page
Organisation
Organise your Lectora content like a book. Pages are the physical pages your students will view,
while chapters and sections provide a convenient means of organising those pages. Take
advantage of the inheritance feature to quickly create and organise your course.
Inheritance
The inheritance principle enables you to save time and create courses quickly by inheriting specific
objects throughout your entire course, a specific chapter or a specific section. This eliminates the
need to insert the same objects multiple times across your content.
SCORM/AICC/Tin Can
Support
Changing to the AICC/SCORM/Tin Can-type automatically adds an assignable unit to your course
and provides the option of adding multiple assignable units later. This also gives you access to predefined reserved variables to set a status and score as necessary.

Dynamic Titles
When you publish your content with dynamic text blocks, an associated XML file provides access
to the text within the dynamic text blocks. Update the text in this document and the published
course will reflect the changes. This makes it easy to update textual information in your course
without republishing your content.
Accessible Titles
Create courses published to a Web-based format (HTML, CourseMill LMS, SCORM/Web-based,
AICC/Web-based) that comply with the standards set in Section 508 - 1194.22 of the
Rehabilitation Act and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. These standards
govern the requirements that you must meet to make web-based content accessible to individuals
with disabilities.
Page Sizes
Select one of the optimised page sizes based on your intended output device (iPads, Tablets and
Most Computers, Other Monitors, or Smart Phones) or select Custom to specify custom
dimensions for the pages of your course.
Page Layouts
Ensure a consistent course design by using any of the 25 pre-defined page layouts. You can create
your own custom layout to save time and even share it with your colleagues.
Themes
Use one of Lectora’s professionally-designed themes to save time and provide inspiration as you
design your course. A theme is a set of design elements, including navigation buttons and
background graphics that together provide the look and feel of your course.
Content Frames
Divide your course’s pages into multiple regions with content frames. Select from a set of predefined frame styles.
Page Transitions
Select from over 20 different transitions to customise the way pages load, or transition, in your
course.
Background Colors,
Patterns and Sounds
Specify a background color, pattern or sound to apply to each page of your course.
Background Wizard
Create a custom background such as a colour gradient, or choose from the background image

Camtasia allows you to create captivating videos and record screen activity. Add synchronised
audio, zoom and pan effects and seamless transitions to produce a professional demonstration of
an application.
Create Flash Animations
Using Flypaper
Easily create custom Flash animations, special effects and transitions for your Lectora courses
using the full professional version of Flypaper. Flypaper enables you to create and manage highimpact, interactive content, edit and repurpose the content, and include it into your title, all
without touching any programming code.

Lectora’s Audio Editor allows you to trim, fade, adjust the volume and add silence to audio files.

Convert individual audio and video files to .mp3 and .mp4 file format, or choose to convert all
available audio and video with one click when you publish your course. This provides better
compression for faster loading, high quality files, smaller size files to free up bandwidth space,
complete browser compatibility and the option to view videos in full screen.
HTML5 Media Support
MP3 and MP4 files are presented using a Flash player or HTML5, dependent upon the device on
which the content is viewed. With HTML5 Media Support, you can successfully deliver audio and

Easily add high quality, professional images to your course by inserting any of the more than 6,500

With the use of actions, characters can take on any of the supported poses and react to the

Stock Buttons

Find inspiration from other Lectora authors and the Lectora development team. Search through

Library Objects
Save individual objects or groups of objects for re-use in other titles or for sharing with other
Lectora authors.
My Media
Save approved logos, corporate graphics or other media to re-use in your courses. Your “My
Media” location can be private to you or relocated to a shared network drive for access by other
Lectora authors in your organisation.
Title Media
Access a categorised list of all the media assets used within your content. See what media is
already in your course and easily re-use wherever needed.
Text Support
Text Styles
Save time with pre-defined Text Styles that automatically apply text attributes such as font face,
style, size and color to the text blocks within your course.
Pasting Formatted and
Unformatted Text
When you paste text into a course, choose to retain or discard the text formatting associated with
copied text.
Text Attributes
Choose from Bold, Italic, Underline, Superscript and Subscript text styles.
Text Paragraph Attributes
Adjust line height within a text block and choose your own paragraph spacing.
Text Lists
Choose from Numbered and Bulleted lists for your content.
Text Colors

Font Type and Size
Selection
Specify the font type and size options for fonts used with your text blocks. Fonts are not
embedded in the final, published output. Use Web-friendly fonts to ensure they are cross-system
compatible.
Symbol Library
Easily insert symbols such as copyright and trademark symbols right into text.
Text Tables
Build and format tables to structure and display data. Apply a pre-defined table style to provide a
professional look to your text.
Hyperlinks
Make text interactive with hyperlinks that can be used to execute any Lectora action.
Dynamic Text
Update text in your title on the fly without the need to republish. Simply specify a text block as
dynamic and update the associated XML file once you publish the course. Any changes made are
immediately reflected on the page.

Margins, Styles and Colors
Change the properties of a Text Block by adding a border, outline, background color
and margins.
Spell Check
Ensure spelling accuracy of all content in English, British and Canadian English variations, including
questions, by automatically checking all tests within a course for errors. Choose to spell check
automatically or wait to check your course later.
Search, Find and Replace
Text
Search, find and replace text within text-based objects including text blocks, questions, question
feedback, menus and notes. Easily globally find and replace words and phrases used in your
content.
Translation Manager
Use the Translation Manager to export and aggregate all text in your course into a single RTF
document for easy translation. Use the Translation Manager to then import the translated RTF
document and create a separate language-version of your content.

Objects and Features
Object Alignment
Use object alignment tools to make sure objects are properly aligned and organised on your page.
Object Layering
Layer objects in your course to manipulate how they appear to your viewers. Object layering is
determined by the order of your objects as they are listed in the Title Explorer. Move an object up
or down a layer, place an object on the top layer or move the object to the bottom layer.
Object Grouping
Group objects to make sure they are always associated with one another. Grouping objects
enables you to move one object in the group and move the others at the same time, define the
visibility of all objects in the group and execute actions with Groups as the target so that the
action affects all objects in the group.
Object Transitions
Apply animations to objects so that when the object is made visible and/or is hidden from view, it
appears/disappears using a special transition effect, You can fade in images and text, apply a
modern fly animation and apply other enhanced transition effects to Web-based objects, such as
elastic and bounce.

Save time by selecting multiple objects and change common properties for those objects at one
time.
Text Blocks
Add text to your courses using text blocks. You can wrap text around objects or include scroll bars

Flash Animations and

Add your own SWF Flash files or FLV video files. You can set your SWF file to transparent or make
it automatically fit to the browser.
Configurable Flash
Animations
Customise and configure your own Flash animation, activity or game as a creative way to quiz and
engage learners.
GIF Animations
Insert 3-frame animated GIF files in your course.
Textual Buttons
Build your own Textual Buttons with the Text Button Wizard. Customise the shape, font
attributes, background colors, rollover colors and more.
Image-Based Buttons
Create a custom 3-frame button by adding images for the Normal, Down and Over states.
Stock Buttons
Select from a gallery of Stock Buttons from the Media Library. Back, Next, Home and Exit buttons
are pre-programmed with the corresponding action to save you development time.
Transparent Buttons
Use transparent buttons to build hot spots and rollover effects. Transparent buttons have a blue
tint in Edit Mode and are completely transparent once published.
Table of Contents
Build an index of the chapters, sections and pages in your course. Viewers can select the chapter,
section or page from the table of contents to quickly navigate directly to that area. Choose from a
Tree View, Indented List or Drop-Down list style.
Menus
Build customisable horizontal and vertical menus quickly and easily with optional borders, colors
and backgrounds. Menu items can execute any of the available actions. Automatically generate a
menu based on the structure of your course using Chapter, Section and Page names within the
menu.
Add progress bars for use in interactive exercises to show time elapsing or to show progress
through a course. Progress bars can be customised to work with variables and actions and can be
stylised with orientation, color, background and fill options.

Timers
Use a Timer object to create your own timed quizzes or games. Trigger any action when the timer
finishes counting down (or up).
Web Windows
With the Web Window object, you can embed websites, a page from the course, a Google Maps
location, a Wikipedia entry or a Google Document directly into one of your course pages. No
additional programming is required.
Social Widgets
Allow users to share content to social media networks like Facebook and Twitter with Share
buttons. Embed dynamic Twitter Feeds or Twitter Search results that update in real time.
RSS Feeds
Embed one of several popular RSS Feeds into a course or embed your own custom RSS Feed.
Internet connectivity is required by students to access the content of the RSS feeds in the
published course.
HTML Extensions
Extend Lectora’s native capabilities with HTML Extensions which allow for the integration of
custom meta tags, JavaScript, custom HTML and more.

Attachments
Insert attachments to provide viewers with access to additional files, documents or presentations.

Certificates of Completion
Reward learners for a job well done by quickly creating certificates for tests or course completion.
Customise certificate templates with desired styles and fonts, names and dates.
Reference Lists
Associate reference information such as the author, title, publisher and date of publication for
most objects. Add a reference list to automatically build a complete list of all the reference
information in one place.
QR Codes
If you want to link your online learning directly to mobile learning, then you’ll want to take
advantage of the QR Code generator. You can link to shorter mobile-based lessons, a resource for
when users are in the field, an email address or an important website. The content is limitless.
Make sure your users install a QR Code scanner on their mobile devices.
Status Icons
Use the new Status Indicator object to easily display the current status (Not Started, In Progress or
Completed) of charters, sections, tests, surveys and pages based on the learner’s interaction with
your title’s content. Choose among Lectora’s 12 Status Indicator or use your own custom images.
Status Indicators can be displayed stand-alone or included within the Table of Contents and Menu
objects.
Tests, Surveys, Questions and Forms
Graded Tests
Create quizzes, tests and formal assessments with a specified passing score and built-in branching
upon pass or fail.
Randomised Tests
Create randomised tests to give each learner a unique test experience.
Test Submission
Submit the results of a test using email, a custom CGI script program or directly to Google Drive,
Google’s online storage system. If the course has been published to SCORM/AICC and resides
within a learning management system (LMS), test results are automatically submitted to the LMS
and no additional submission information is necessary.
Multiple Tests
Create multiple tests, such as pre-tests and post-tests, within a single course. Choose which tests
to included in the overall course score.
Standalone Questions
Add standalone questions to your title that are not necessarily part of a graded quiz or test. Use
questions as brief knowledge checks, or to provide learning activities throughout your content.
Gradable Questions
Add gradable questions to your course. Lectora stores the learner’s answer to the question and
compares the answer with the correct answer. Questions support a point value that is figured into
the overall test score calculation when the question is included in a test.
Question Feedback
Provide feedback to your learners as they answer questions. Issue feedback based on
correct/incorrect answers or for individual selected choices. Feedback issued to the user can
support any Lectora action, such as showing an object on the page or opening a page in a pop-up
window, and defaults to display textual messages such as “Sorry, that is incorrect. Try again.”

Question Attempts
Limit the number of times users can answer a question. Display custom feedback to the learner
when his/her final attempt is still incorrect.
Survey Questions
Use any question type within a survey. Survey questions do not have correct/incorrect choice
designations.
Surveys
Create surveys to allow users to evaluate your content or training or give their opinions on a topic,
for example.
Survey Submission
Submit the results of a survey using email, a custom CGI script program or directly to a Google
Drive, Google’s online storage system. If you have published your course to SCORM/AICC, it has
been set to report question interactions and resides within a learning management system (LMS)
that supports question interaction information, the survey results are automatically submitted to
the LMS and no additional submission information is necessary.
True/False Questions
True/False questions support one correct answer out of two possibilities. Default choice options
are “True” and “False” but can be changed to include custom text. True/False questions can be
graded or used as survey questions.
Multiple Choice Questions
Multiple Choice questions support one correct answer from multiple possible choices. Choices can
support custom text and/or images. Multiple Choice questions can be graded or used as survey
questions.

Questions
Multiple Response questions support one or more correct answers from multiple possible choices.
Choices can support custom text and/or images. Multiple Response questions can be graded or

Fill-in-the-Blank
Questions
Fill-in-the-Blank questions require users to supply a short (typed) answer that is compared to a list
of known correct answers. Fill-in-the-Blank questions can be graded or used as survey questions.

Number Entry questions require the learner to specify a number to answer a question. Number
Entry questions can be graded or used as survey questions.

Matching questions require the learner to match items in one column to randomised choices in
another column. The learner must match items in the left column with items in the right column
to answer the question. Choices in either matching column can support custom text and/or
images. Matching questions can be graded or used as survey questions.

Rank/Sequence questions require the learner to assign an order or priority to content.

Drag-and-Drop Questions
Drag-and-Drop questions require the learner to drag objects such as text or images to a defined
place within a larger image. Drag-and-Drop questions can be graded or used as survey questions.
Hot Spot Questions
Hot Spot questions require learners to use a visual multiple-choice set to identify areas of an
image; one or more possible correct answers are possible. Hot Spot questions can be graded or
used as survey questions.

Essay Questions
Essay questions require the learner to supply a long answer (typically more than 80 characters).
This question type cannot be automatically graded by the testing module.
Short Answer Questions
Short Answer questions require the learner to provide a brief answer (typically less than 80
characters). This question type cannot be automatically graded by the testing module.
Likert Questions
Likert questions require the learner to specify his or her level of agreement to a statement. This
question type cannot be automatically graded by the testing module.
Bulk Import Questions
Use a spreadsheet saved as a CSV file to import a set of questions into your course at one time.
Forms
Forms allow you to group a set of form objects and optionally communicate a collection of data
using email, a custom CGI script program or directly to Google Drive, Google’s online storage
system.
Standalone Form Objects
Use standalone form objects throughout your course to collect learner input. A variable
associated with each form object reflects the learner’s input and can be used in conditional
actions for branching exercises.
Radio Buttons and Groups
Create a set of radio buttons that allows users to select one of several different text-based
options. Radio buttons contain the appropriate labels to ensure they are accessible by assistive
technologies.
Check Boxes
Create check boxes to allow learners to select a text-based option. Check boxes contain the

Drop-Down Lists
Create a drop-down list to give learners a text-based list of possible options.
List Boxes
Create a list box that allows users to select one or more text-based options from a list of possible

Entry Fields
Create a single or multi-line entry field to allow learners to input words, phrases and paragraphs

Accessible Text Labels
Associate text blocks as the label for a specific form object to ensure the appropriate label is
accessible by assistive technologies.
Form Submission
Submit the results of a form using email, a custom CGI script program or directly to a Google

Create finger friendly controls for use on mobile and touch devices. Custom controls are also

Lectora’s Accessibility Check tool can be used to help identify objects within your course that may
require special attention in order to comply with Section 508 or WCAG requirements. The
Accessibility Checker will help you determine whether or not your content complies with Section
508 of the Rehabilitation Act - Paragraph 1194.22 (a) through (p) and WCAG 2.0 Guidelines - Level
A 1.1 through 4.1 for Web-based Intranet and Internet Information and Applications. The
Accessibility Checker only applies to content that will be published to a Web-based format (HTML,
CourseMill LMS, AICC/Web-based and SCORM/Web-based).

Error Check
Conveniently check your course for errors and warnings. Click on each error or warning to locate
the precise object, action or page so that you can quickly resolve the issue and resume
development.
Variable Manager
Quickly and easily create and view variables within your course. View the names and descriptions
of reserved variables, create new variables needed for your course and see where existing
variables are used within the course.
Import PowerPoint Slides
Select one or more slides from a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation to import into your course.
Slides are converted to Lectora pages along with their objects, text and transitions.

Select an object, group of objects or any number of pages from another title to import into your
existing title.
Notes
Notes are for your eyes only. Leave a note on any page of your course as a way to add reminders,
to-dos and more. Lectora tracks the name of the author who created the note and the time it was
created. Pages containing a note will appear in bold and italicised in the Title Explorer.
Notes Reports
Use the Notes Report tool to view the notes associated with a course. The report provides a
summary of the order, location, color, originator, time stamp and text of each note.

Quickly launch ReviewLink to access comments left by reviewers for your course. Re-post your
course to ReviewLink after you update and automatically set comments to Fixed so reviewers can

Publishing Error Check
When you publish your title, Lectora immediately runs your title through an error check process.
An error check identifies any logical errors within your title. The errors that are displayed are
dependent upon the type of title and publishing format chosen.
Publishing Debug Options
Select this to debug your course in its published format. Select this option and launch your
published course. An additional debug window will launch, displaying all of the variable
interactions and actions executed within the published course from which you can configure the
type of information you want to see in the debug window.
Publish to ReviewLink
Instantly publish Lectora courses to ReviewLink online review software for instant collaboration,
review and feedback. Each Lectora product license can publish and review up to 5 concurrent
titles on ReviewLink.
Publish to Single
Executable File (.exe)
You can publish your title as a single executable file. This will compact the entire title and all
supporting files into a single .exe file for easy distribution. .exe files are supported on the
Windows operating system.
Publish to CD-ROM
When you publish content to CD-ROM, Lectora will create the necessary files for you to burn to a
CD-ROM. The course will automatically start once inserted into a CD-ROM drive.

Publish to the Web
(HTML)
Publish your course to HTML format if you want to post it to the Internet or your own Intranet.
When you publish in HTML, Lectora creates the necessary files for you to upload to a Web server.
Publish to SCORM
The Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is a set of inter-related technical
specifications built upon the work of the AICC, IMS and IEEE to create a unified content model for
Web-based learning content. Courses published with Lectora will meet or exceed the guidelines
for SCORM 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 and 2004.
Publish to AICC
The Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC) was established in 1988 to define standards on how
Computer Managed Instruction (CMI) systems should operate in presenting course materials to
students. Courses published with Lectora will meet or exceed the guidelines for a Web-based CMI
system.
Publish to Tin Can
The Publish to Tin Can option captures the activities that happen as part of the learning
experience and reports them using the Tin Can API. A special Tin Can action enables authors to
record a noun, verb and object statement with any action trigger that lets you capture nearly any
learner activity.
Publish to CourseMill LMS
CourseMill LMS is a learning management system developed by Trivantis and designed especially
for easy course integration. CourseMill users enjoy the benefit of easily publishing directly from
Lectora to their CourseMill learning management system.
Multi-Language Publishing
Publish multi-language versions of your content by using translated RTF files. After your main
course is published, Lectora will publish your translated content using the translation files you
provide.
Publish Packs
Add additional “Publish To” options that provide advanced compatibility. Lectora will seamlessly

Customise the test results window, prompts and standard messages, enabling you to quickly

Supported Interactivity
Actions
Create interactivity in your course with the power of actions. Trigger actions based on timing,
learner interaction with the content with a mouse, typing keys or key combinations, and with the
show or hide of objects. When actions are triggered, you can dynamically: Show and hide objects,
change the contents of text blocks and images, submit tests, surveys, questions and forms, move
and resize objects, communicate with Flash animations, navigate to pages and Web addresses,
play, pause and stop media, open pop-up windows, display textual alerts, change character poses
and more
Show/Hide Triggers
Trigger any action when an object is shown or hidden. The Transition In and Transition Out
selection will take effect when the object shows or hides on the page.
Touch-screen Triggers
Trigger any action when the user swipes left or right while viewing courses on touch-screen
devices such as tablets and smart phones.
Mouse Triggers
You can trigger actions when the user single-clicks, double-clicks, right-clicks with a mouse or uses
a mouse to enter or exit an object.
Keyboard Triggers
Trigger actions with the press of certain keys or key-combinations by learners on their keyboards.

Validate the value of any form object with the Select/Change trigger. Each time the learner
modifies or selects the form object, you can trigger an action.
Reserved Variables
Take advantage of Lectora’s reserved variables. Variables such as BrowserType, PageInTitle and

Functionality
If a Lectora program failure occurs, instantly report error information to Trivantis. This allows us to

Project Printing
Print the pages of your course as you see them in Edit mode. Create printouts with 1, 2, 4 or 6
Lectora pages per sheet or create printouts in storyboard or outline view.
