And people brought to him a deaf man who had
a speech impediment and begged him to lay his
hand on him. He took him off by himself away
from the crowd. He put his finger into the
man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue;
then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and
said to him, “Ephphatha!”— that is, “Be
opened!” — And immediately the man’s ears
were opened, his speech impediment was
removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them
not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered
them not to, the more they proclaimed it. They
were exceedingly astonished and they said, “He
has done all things well. He makes the deaf
hear and the mute speak.”

"And people brought Jesus a deaf man who had
a speech impediment." (Mark 7:2) Sometimes in
marriage it seems like one of us is deaf or at
least not listening. Other times the speaker
mumbles (or so I tell my husband). Which of you
is better at speaking; which at listening? Practice
each other's gift.

The children’s choir will provide basic
music training, along with the opportunity

When Kaley talks about how her life has changed
over the last couple of years, she mentions Friends
of the Carpenter based in Vancouver, WA, a faithbased day shelter that provides safety and a sense
of purpose to women and men in the area, and
especially those with special needs and those living
in poverty.
As a member of the organization’s Community
Awareness Reaching Empowerment (CARE)
Committee, Kaley now reaches out in love to others
and helps the vulnerable and marginalized feel safe
and at home in this community-building space. But
it wasn’t always this way—once Kaley struggled with
addictions and made harmful choices that led to
suffering and disappointments in her own life and
the lives of others.
“Our faith in Christ,
who became poor,
and was always close
to the poor and the
outcast, is the basis of
our concern for the
integral development
of society’s most
neglected members.”
– Pope Francis
(Joy of the Gospel, 186)
Yet this unique and longtime homeless ministry, now
based in a spacious warehouse ittingly called the
Friendship Center, is committed to transformation
and hope for all. For the dozens of people who cross
over its threshold every day into a collective space
of warm welcomes, coffee, and conversation, being
here represents a way to participate in creative
projects that also carve out spaces for fellowship,
healing, and peace. As focused citizen-artisans bend
over their work—from pocket-sized crosses and ish
to scroll-sawed crosses designed to hang on large
walls—in an authorized-only woodworking area,
other visitors and volunteers attend to sanding,
painting, and staining projects. Though the sale of
wood products and other items at a thrift store and
through an online catalogue provide some selfsustaining income for the ministry, it’s this sense of
purpose and the forging of relationships around one
table that, for participants, is what’s most important.
Initially inspired by the efforts of the organization’s
founder, Rev. Duane L. Sich, and his dedicated wife,
Julie, who launched the idea for a workshop for
the homeless from their spare bedroom and garage,
Friends of the Carpenter has evolved from a place of
practical outreach and engagement between church
volunteers and the poor to a far-reaching ministry
that has impacted the lives of countless people and
groups throughout Clark County. Now directed by
Tom Iberle, who has served as Executive Director
since 2014 but who irst became involved with the
organization in 2008 as a Volunteer Coordinator, the
Friendship Center keeps its doors open from 9am to
4pm Monday through Friday each week.
As a lifelong Catholic who stepped away from a
science career as a young man to commit his life to
charity work and raising his three children, Iberle
has found his experiences alongside other volunteers
at Friends of the Carpenter to be life-changing and
full of joy and gratitude. As an ecumenical ministry,
Friends of the Carpenter is supported by, and engages,
a diverse collection of volunteers from many different
locations and backgrounds who help out with various
ministries at the Friendship Center as well as other
afiliated endeavors: 70-80 religious groups from
many different faith traditions, including a number
of parishes in Clark County, and especially St. Joseph
and St. John the Evangelist parishes in Vancouver;
those assigned community-service hours; and youth
groups interested in getting involved during summer
break.
The creative, hands-on efforts and outreach of
Friends of the Carpenter, including the CARE
Kaley at Friends of the Carpenter day shelter, where she is a
member of the CARE Committee which helps organize field
trips and events for participants.
committee that Kaley has poured her energy into over
the past months, are made possible in part through the
Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD)
which funds justice-seeking programs in communities
across the United States. By giving a hand up, rather
than a handout, CCHD and its generous supporters
help people living in poverty join together to identify
problems, make decisions, and ind ways to improve
their lives, neighborhoods, and world.
Your support of the CCHD Collection on September
13th helps to end poverty through building solidarity
in our communities. Working together, we can reach
out to our brothers and sisters living on the periphery
of society. Please visit www.povertyusa.org to read
more details about CCHD’s efforts to spread Christ’s
love by helping to break the cycle of poverty in your
community and across the country.
who showcased “red-carpet” iber-arts creations
as a way to have fun and compete for donated
prizes while raising public awareness of byproduct
waste, repurposing possibilities, and Raginery’s
own efforts to promote sustainability within the
community.
In a former auto shop illed with work tables,
looms, and sewing machines, bins and shelves of
old garments and fabric once destined for landills
await transformation—the chance to become
something new.
Opened as a nonproit training business and
textile reuse center in 2014, Raginery exists as a
hub of creative possibility where post-consumer
textile products are converted into new materials
and all are welcome to participate. Located
on a bustling street in downtown Bellingham,
visitors can browse the storefront retail shop for
fabric, yarn, and handmade or repurposed goods
and vintage inds, or venture deeper into the
space where a warehouse-sized area of industrial
workspaces, storage rooms, and a classroom hum
and buzz with activity.
In a spirit of creative expression and collective
enterprise, knowledgeable volunteers teach
worker trainees and community members handson skills such as identifying fabric values, cutting,
sewing, and weaving. Participants gain the
conidence and expertise to repurpose textiles into
products ranging from wiping rags fashioned from
old t-shirts to woven rugs and embellished purses
and jackets. A recent Wedding Dress Upcycle
Challenge involved 30 teams and individuals
Created by parent-nonproit ReUse Works as
a second “jobs from waste” enterprise (selfsustaining “sister company” Appliance Depot
was founded in 2005), Raginery was designed
to be a self-sustaining business and is well on its
way to achieving this goal, according to Duane
Jager, Founding Executive Director of ReUse
Works. A seasoned veteran of sustainabilityminded nonproits that provide job training and
employment to those in need by reusing and
recycling waste and discarded materials, Jager
speaks with pride and grit of Raginery’s mission
to salvage and repurpose what would otherwise be
tossed away.
Libby Chenault, a professional crafter based
in Bellingham who has taught workshops at
Raginery since its opening as a way to connect
with others in the community and source
materials for her handmade hats and teddy bears
sold at the local farmer’s market, also appreciates
that Raginery inspires and makes possible the
“crosspollination of older and younger generations
working on projects together.” A member of
Raginery’s board of directors, Chenault considers
her participation on this steering committee as yet
another learning opportunity that has encouraged
her “to step into more leadership roles and realize
Ragfinery teaches worker trainees and community
members the traditional skills of identifying fabric values,
cutting, sewing, weaving, and creatively re-purposing
post-consumer textiles into products of value.
that my skills and knowledge are valued in the
community.”
Founded with inancial help from the Catholic
Campaign for Human Development (CCHD)
and its generous donors, Raginery also depends
on partnerships with volunteers, local businesses,
and the proceeds from the sale of repurposed
items. As a response to statistics associated with
a “throw-away” consumer culture—such as the
fact that 21 billion pounds of post-consumer
textile waste are generated each year, accounting
for over 5.2% of all municipal waste in the
United States—Raginery offers a communal
gathering space of education and craftsmanship
that conserves resources for the good of the Earth
while creating employment opportunities for
local artists and low-income clients of socialservice agencies and area schools.
ORIGINS
Involvement
CCHD was founded in 1970 by the Catholic bishops of the United
States as their domestic anti-poverty program. They realized that
established charitable services alone were not creating the changes
people needed to stay out of poverty. With a goal of creating
sustainable systems, the bishops worked to address the policies and
structures that perpetuate poverty. CCHD seeks to eliminate poverty
by building solidarity in communities.
You can make a difference:
Impact
CCHD brings Catholic social teaching to life by funding community
and economic development programs across the United States that
help poor and marginalized people join together to make decisions,
seek solutions to local problems, and ind ways to improve their
lives and neighborhoods. Economic development initiatives help
create new businesses and jobs. CCHD also provides educational
opportunities for Catholics to learn about poverty, stand in solidarity
with those affected by it, and relect on their own responsibility
before the great need of others.
1.
Donate. Your generous support, in the parish collection and
throughout the year, is vital to CCHD’s anti-poverty mission
and creates real change.
2.
Learn. CCHD offers awareness programs to learn more about
poverty, those affected by it, and our responsibilities as members
of the Church. Visit www.povertyusa.org.

CCHD is committed to accountability and transparency. We allocate funds to community projects that promote the mission and vision of CCHD while adhering to the
moral and social teachings of the Catholic Church. Please visit www.usccb.org/cchd to view funding criteria and see a detailed list of our most recent grants. CCHD’s
primary source of support is the annual collection held in parishes across the United States. Twenty-ive percent of each collection supports anti-poverty projects
in the local (arch)diocese where the funds are collected. Use of the twenty-ive percent in this archdiocese can be viewed at www.seattlearchdiocese.org/cchd.

CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
Special Collection—September 12th and 13th
Next week’s collection for the Catholic Campaign
for Human Development (CCHD) needs your help.
CCHD was founded to end the cycle of poverty in
the United States by funding organizations that help
individuals help themselves. With the tradition of
improving education, housing situations, and
community economic development, CCHD
continues to make a positive impact in communities
nationwide. Your contribution will defend human
dignity and reach out to those living on the margins.
Please give to the CCHD collection.
