Predicting in advance what films will play at our beloved one-screen Hiway is the biggest challenge that we face. It is very hard to know ahead of time. The films listed here are an educated guess. Our website is always the best place to get up-to-the-minute information. Scheduling our main films is weekto-week. On Monday, we decide what main film will play starting that Friday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we set the showtimes for the upcoming week and then update our website and telephone hotline. We also send out a weekly email (sign up at our website). Sometimes, we book a main film a few weeks in advance, which we post on our website. For our latest Main Attractions plans, visit: HiwayTheater.org. (Or call our Hotline at 267-864-0065) Alfred Molina and John Lithgow in Love is Strange The Trip to Italy Magic in the Moonlight UK - 1 hr 48 min - Michael Winterbottom Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon star in this follow-up to their 2010 comedy, The Trip. This time they’ve been engaged by a British newspaper to chronicle a tour of high-end restaurants and historical sights along the Italian peninsula. Director Michael Winterbottom gives free rein to his stars’ improvisational gifts, while juxtaposing beautiful scenery, sumptuous food, funny reflections on art and literature, and constant celebrity impressions. USA/UK - Woody Allen Woody Allen returns to France, this time to the glamorous Riviera of the 1920s. Emma Stone, Colin Firth, and Marcia Gay Harden lead the cast of this romantic comedy about an Englishman who is brought in to investigate a possible swindle. Personal and professional complications then ensue. Jersey Boys USA - Clint Eastwood Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, this engaging film combines the iconic hits of the sixties pop group The Four Seasons with the off-stage drama of their rise to stardom. The story takes them from their native New Jersey through gambling debts, Mafia threats and family disasters. John Lloyd Young plays Frankie Valli, a role he originated in the original Broadway production. HOLLYWOOD SUMMER NIGHTS 2014 This Hollywood Summer Nights series contains the fixed schedules for the County Theater, Ambler Theater, and the Hiway Theater. HOLLYWOOD CLASSICS HOLLYWOOD CLASSICS Every week this summer, the stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age return to the silver screen: James Dean, Jimmy Stewart, Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, Paul Newman...the list goes on and on. Memorable acting in great films. See these Hollywood classics the way they were intended to be seen: on the big screen in a packed auditorium. Hiway: June 5 Thurs 7:00 Hiway: June 8 Sun 12:30 A Night at the Opera The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time This series is NOT about classics from the Golden Age. These films are edgier. They may be profane, violent, and/or scary. They were not made for the entire family. But they definitely were made to be seen on the big screen. Are they new classics in the making? You be the judge. 1935 – 1 hr 31 min – b/w – DCP - MGM d: Sam Wood – w/ The Marx Brothers The Marx Brothers shine in this gleeful farce, which is maybe their best movie ever. Featuring their normal insanely funny physical and verbal gags, as well as an almost coherent (for them) plot. From the ocean liner “stateroom scene” to the “sanity clause” to the raucous sabotage of the final opera performance, this is a satiric gem. 2 hr 45 min with one intermission Although gifted with a superbly logical brain, fifteen year-old Christopher is autistic. His carefully constructed world falls apart when he finds his neighbor’s dog dead and he is blamed for the killing. A darkly funny, poignant, and fascinating mystery with equal parts comedy and drama. Spade plunges into a world of deception and double-crosses, as a trio of criminals shadows his trail. With astounding supporting performances by Mary Astor, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Elisha Cook, Jr. 1942 1 hr 28 min - b/w - DCP - Paramount d: Preston Sturges - w/ Claudette Colbert, Joel McCrea, Rudy Vallee, Mary Astor Preston Sturges was at the height of his powers with this classic screwball comedy. Claudette Colbert flees from her proud and penniless husband, Joel McCrea, into the ridiculous arms of yachtsman billionaire Rudy Vallee. Hilarious, irresistible, and impeccably cast, this fast-paced comedy has an abundance of rapid-fire dialogue, improbable set-ups, and hilarious supporting characters. NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE 1959 – 2 hrs – b/w – DCP – United Artists d: Billy Wilder – w/Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, Marilyn Monroe Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis star as a pair of musicians who accidentally witness a gangland massacre. To escape the mobsters, they dress as women and hide in an allwomen’s band. And then things really heat up with the arrival of Marilyn Monroe, the band’s curvy, ukulele-playing singer. This legendary screwball comedy was voted AFI’s #1 Comedy of All Time. After taking over his father-inlaw’s business, Jack McCracken is approached by a private detective and discovers his extended family to be thieves and adulterers, looting the business from their suburban homes. Rampant self-interest takes over and comic hysteria builds to a macabre climax.
