Dear Friends,
Those who I would like to read this letter the most will likely never see it. You are
reading it because you are in the theater. Those who should be reading it are not.
Sir Alan Ayckbourn said in an interview last year, at the ripe young age of 75, that
theater has “an air of liveness and spontaneity and excitement.” As he put it, “People
are looking for something that hasn’t been decided six months ago in a studio in
Hollywood.” So true. Yet, his Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough struggles like
PICT to find new audiences in a world fixated by the convenience and saturation
of commercial films, TV, and Netflix.
Going to live theater requires emotional commitment and the willingness to connect
through emotional bonds with the actors. The audience is a part of the show itself
through its interaction with the cast. Theater builds a sense of community, as those
emotions are shared with others in the live audience and thoughts are communicated
with others there.
Theater brings the opportunity to feel, share, and socialize with others. It is spontaneous
and interactive. A farce succeeds when the audience laughs, a tragedy when the audience
sheds tears. The audience participates, injecting its “liveness” and “freshness” into the
performance.
So my simple request is for you to be an ambassador and tell others about the special
“liveness” of theater. And bring your friends, co-workers, and family to experience the
excitement of PICT Classic Theatre with you.

A Note from the Dramaturg

Playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn (b. 12
April 1939) began his career as an actor at
the Scarborough Library Theatre where he
quickly developed a mentor-type relationship
with Artistic Director Stephen Joseph. The
legend goes that during rehearsal, Ayckbourn
complained about the quality of the script and
Joseph’s response was to commission a play
written by Ayckbourn, as a sort of challenge
to do it better.
Ayckbourn rose to the challenge, writing his
first hit Relatively Speaking, which opened on
the West End in 1967. How the Other Half
Sir Alan Ayckbourn
Loves was his second play, which had a series
of mishaps but also earned him fame in America. Since these early works, he has had
a storied career, having written and produced more than seventy full-length plays,
garnering a Tony and an Olivier and becoming the second most-produced British
playwright, after Shakespeare. He eventually took over as artistic director of Scarborough,
renaming it the Stephen Joseph Theatre. He retired from that position in 2009 but
continues to work closely with the company.
The title How the Other Half Loves is a
reference to the work of Rabelais, “onehalf
of the world does not know how the other
half lives.” This line has come to be
shorthand for the tensions between the
lives of the wealthy and those of the rest
of the population, particularly after the
critical success of Joseph Riss’s 1890
photojournalism piece (“How the Other
Half Lives”), a Sinclair-esque piece detailing the horrific conditions of the slums of

New York City. In a masterfully crafted way, Ayckbourn uses comedy to bring
a similar issue to light, pitting boss against employee, exposing the lies that are
common to every person, rich or poor.
Ayckbourn also experiments wildly with the use of stage space in the unequaled dinner party scene. The playwright remembers the original director saying “All
right – I give up. How do you do the dinner scene?” It is Ayckbourn’s masterfully
crafted comedy and that revolutionary use of space that places How the Other Half
Loves far above its peers in the classic form of farce.

Who’s Who in the Cast
Tony Bingham (Bob Phillips) is ecstatic to return to the PICT
stage with such an astounding cast and production crew. This is
Tony’s fourth season at PICT. His most recent collaboration with
PICT was Observe the Sons of Ulster… Other recent roles: Bernard
in Boeing Boeing (Pittsburgh CLO), Presidente in Pantigleize
(Quantum Theatre), Michael Apres in Heads (The REP), and
Greg in Inky (Off the Wall). Recent film roles: Frank in Franksgiving, Ernie in The Gospel of Ernie, and Uncle Randy in Progression.
Tony holds a BA from Point Park and an MFA from the University of Iowa.
Karen Baum (Mary Detweiler) is honored to join PICT’s 2015

Gayle Pazerski (Teresa Phillips) is honored to return for her
third season with PICT. PICT credits: Lady Macbeth in Macbeth,
Woman in Don Juan Comes Back From the War, and Irene St. Clair
in Sherlock Holmes & the Crucifer of Blood. Gayle has a BFA in Theatre
from the University of Kentucky and studied in the graduate
acting program at Rutgers University under William Esper. She
has performed regionally in New York, Ohio, and West Virginia,
and locally with Quantum Theatre, Bricolage, No Name Players,
Caravan Theatre, Dog & Pony Show Theatricals, and Arcade
Comedy Theater. As a playwright, Gayle’s work has been featured
with Bricolage’s Midnight Radio series, No Name Players’ SWAN
Day, Organic Theater Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Filmmakers’ Film Kitchen, and the Future Ten
ten-minute play festival.
Philip Winters (Frank Foster) is in his fifth season at PICT.
PICT credits: Old Mahon in Playboy of the Western World,
Mr. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Daldry in In the Next Room,
and Christy in Lieutenant of Inishmore. Mr. Winters is an associate
professor in the Conservatory of Performing Arts of Point Park
University. Philip is active in local theater, television, film, and

Angela Baughman (Sound Designer) is in her second season at PICT after acting as
sound designer for Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme. Other Pittsburgh

The Importance of Being Earnest, Turn of the Screw, The Great Gatsby, Fahrenheit 451, Walk

Theatre). Angela is a graduate of Berklee College of Music with a BM in music production
and engineering.
Brandon Biller (Assistant Master Electrician) is making his PICT debut. Originally from
Elkins, West Virginia, Brandon graduated from West Virginia University in 2010 with degrees
in Spanish language and culture and in business administration. After graduation, he moved
to the Washington, DC, metro area and began to pursue a career in event lighting production
with Atmosphere, Inc. “He has also remained an active member of the Augusta Heritage
Festival at Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV, since 2008, assisting with the stage
lighting and production of concerts at Harper MacNeely auditorium. As a newly recognized
member of the United States Institute of Theatre Technology, Brandon has turned his focus
toward theatrical lighting and has relocated to Pittsburgh to begin working with PICT
Classic Theatre.
Johnmichael Bohach (Scenic Designer) is returning to PICT for his third full season and
is deeply honored to be named one of PICT Classic Theatre’s Featured Artists for the 2015
Season. PICT credits: Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, Blithe Spirit,
and Sherlock Holmes & the Crucifer of Blood. He has also worked locally with Pittsburgh Opera,
Prime Stage Theatre, Pittsburgh CLO, Kinetic Theatre, and Microscopic Opera, in capacities

Pamela Brusoski (Additional Stage Manager) returns to PICT after acting as Production
Stage Manager for Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. Pamela has worked on
more than twenty five productions at Irish Repertory Theatre in New York City. Favorites
include Dancing at Lughnasa, DA, Molly Sweeney, Freedom of the City, and The Emperor Jones.
Broadway: Beauty and the Beast and Little Women. Off-­Broadway: Primary Stages, New Federal
Theatre, The Mint Theatre, York Theatre Company, and Carnegie Hall. Pamela earned her
MFA in Directing from The City University of New York at Brooklyn College.

Who’s Who in Production
George DeShetler, Jr. (Production Manager / Technical Director) is in his fourth season at
PICT. He began at PICT as the props master in 2012 and came on in July 2013 as production
manager. Other Pittsburgh credits: Production manager at Prime Stage Theatre and temporary
staff carpenter at CMU School of Drama. Regional credits: Arena Stage, Imagination Stage,
Contemporary American Theater Festival, and Indiana Repertory Theatre. George graduated
from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, with a BFA in theatre design and technology.
K. Jenna Ferree (Master Electrician) is happy to be working on her first PICT production.
She is presently pursuing her MFA in lighting design at Carnegie Mellon University and will
graduate in 2017. Prior to moving to Pittsburgh, Jenna was the master electrician for Virginia
Repertory Theatre in Richmond, Virginia for three seasons. She began her professional design
career in 2005 while earning her BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University, which she
received in 2009. Jenna has designed over forty professional production including Next To
Normal, The Pillowman, Detroit, Say Goodnight Gracie, Steel Magnolias, Take Me Out, This
Beautiful City, and The Hound of the Baskervilles.
Martin Giles (Director) is in his fourteenth season with PICT, as actor, director, and playwright.
For PICT, he has directed short works of Beckett, Synge, Pinter, and Chekhov; his own musical
play Beautiful Dreamers; and Martin McDonagh’s A Skull In Connemara. In recent years, he
has directed four plays for Quantum Theatre: Andrew Bovell’s When The Rain Stops Falling,
Graham Greene’s The End Of The Affair (adapted by Karla Boos), Henrik Ibsen’s John Gabriel
Borkman, and Jez Butterworth’s Parlour Song. He also directed for Caravan Theatre of Pittsburgh,
Victoria Stewart’s 800 Words: The Transmigration Of Philip K. Dick, and, most recently, for
Point Park Conservatory, Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire.
Cory F. Goddard (Resident Stage Manager) is in his eleventh season with PICT. Favorite
PICT Credits: Heartbreak House, Stuff Happens, Lieutenant of Inishmore, House & Garden,
Salome, In the Next Room or the vibrator play, Waiting for Godot, and the Beckett, Synge, Pinter,
and Chekhov festivals. Other Pittsburgh credits: Quantum Theatre, Bricolage, The REP, and

Rebecca Krall (Assistant Stage Manager) is excited to be working on her first PICT show!
As a Point Park alum, Rebecca has worked as the company manager with City Theatre, has
been a stage management intern at the Pittsburgh Public Theatre and Westport Country
Playhouse and worked as a stage manager/crew for various productions with companies
such as the Pittsburgh Playhouse, International Children’s Festival, Carrnivale Theatrics,
Sewickley Academy, Caravan Theatre of Pittsburgh, Bakerloo Theatre Project, and CHS
Theatre Department.
Alan Stanford (Artistic Director) is in his eighth season at PICT. He was for more than
thirty years a principal and leading actor with the renowned Gate Theatre, Dublin, where he
recently directed his adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, which was taken to the Hong Kong
Arts Festival in February 2015. He founded Ireland’s Second Age Theatre Company.

Greater Pittsburgh Area. As a Pittsburgh local, he is excited to be working in his hometown
for PICT and is looking forward to working with such talented artists to create an epic
heater season.
Keith A. Truax (Lighting Designer) is thrilled to be joining the company of How The Other
Half Loves. Currently Keith is a third year graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University,
where he is pursuing an MFA in lighting design. Past PICT credits: Women and Scarecrow
(lighting design and master electrician), Blithe Spirit, Waiting for Godot and Sons of Ulster,
(master electrician). Future Projects: Sharon’s Grave and Oliver Twist for PICT Classic Theatre
