The 290 guests saw runway-ready, student-designed fashions. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, netting nearly $70,000. These funds will be used to provide the essential services and extra support to keep students engaged in school so they graduate prepared for college and the future. The event was co-hosted by “Project Runway” finalists, Laura Kathleen Baker and Michael Drummond, and KPLR-TV’s Melanie Moon. The Academy’s 24 fashion design students walked the runway, modeling their creations, ranging from evening gowns to sportswear. Laura Kathleen Baker and Elizabeth Wagner are the Academy’s fashion design instructors. The event also recognized the following for supporting LFLA: • John Mann Presidential Award Kay Fernandez, Jim and Tami Fernandez and their children • Founders’ Award - Isaac and Marilyn Young • Lift For Life Academy Community Partner Award - Southeast Missouri State University • Missouri Charter School Teacher of the Year - Alison Owens Thank you to all of our students, volunteers and guests - we could not have done this without you. In recognition of her outstanding efforts, she was recently named Missouri Charter School Teacher of the Year by the Missouri Charter Public School Association. She is head of the LFLA math department and has dedicated her 23-year teaching career to empowering her students to learn math concepts that have enabled them to become successful, confident adults. Her results are shown in the test scores: Our students’ Algebra I EOC scores reached an all-time high of 73 percent in 2011, surpassing neighboring school districts, many county districts and state scores. Alison has also helped our students score extremely high on the math portion of the ACT and gain college credit at St. Louis University. At the 3rd Annual Celebrating Success Fashion Show on May 11, Alison received a special proclamation from the office of Mayor Francis Slay, recognizing her achievements as an educator at LFLA. Congratulations, Alison for a continued job well done! Many thanks to our foundation supporters Lift For Life Academy’s success revolves around lifting incoming students from severe underachievement to grade level proficiencies. The tremendous generosity of our community makes this possible. We extend our deepest gratitude to all our foundation supports. The following are just a few examples of this generosity. Monsanto Fund gave Lift For Life Academy an extraordinarily generous grant for our Lifting Science Program. LFLA will work with Washington University-Institute for School Partnership to improve middle and high school students understanding and academic proficiency in sciences. KEEPING KIDS IN SCHOOL provides those “extra” services, supports, staff and interventions coupled with a rigorous/ relevant curriculum, which help at-risk students stay in school, achieve academically and graduate with the skills required for college, work and citizenship. We are grateful to The Cruse Trust, Florence Heiman Charitable Foundation, the Saigh Foundation, the Pott Foundation, the Kuhn Foundation, the Staenberg Family Foundation and numerous other supporters of this program. Employees Community Fund of Boeing St. Louis made a very generous grant to purchase Study Island to help middle school students prepare for end-of-course tests. The generosity of Pi Beta Phi/Sign of the Arrow allowed the Academy to purchase nonfiction texts for our Reading Improvement Program. St. Louis Philanthropic Organization funds purchased tools to assess middle school students performance throughout the Anthony Bedessie, Marshall Cohen, Norman Klayman and Aryes Byrd with plaques dedicating LFLA’s two art rooms in honor of Peggy Klayman’s love of art. Thank you, Norman and Peggy Klayman! Julia Woods Hill and LFLA school social worker Jeanne Kriss at the newly dedicated Julia Woods Hill – John R. Woods Foundation Social Workers Office. year. A very kind grant from the Clayton-Ladue Rotary Club was used to purchase a life-size human skeleton and organ models. A grant from the St. Louis District Tennis Association allows LFLA to offer both boys and girls tennis teams. LFLA Board member Joan Bradford made a gift in memory of her son Gavin Bradford Donohue. The Chester E. Flegel Trust made a gift in memory of Esther Flegel, Chester’s mother. Lift For Life Academy | Where Learning Comes Alive! Gazette | Summer 2013 Letter from a LFLA parent Go Paperless! I don’t think Atiyah would have achieved such success in high school and in her college pursuit had she attended any other school. She NEVER wanted to miss a day of school even when she wasn’t feeling well. Thank you all for creating such a nurturing academic environment, it was the perfect fit for her. The constant encouragement and guidance she received throughout her four years kept her motivated, focused and striving to do her best. The Graduation Ceremony was beautiful, and it became apparent to me that throughout their high school years another class was being taught they were also learning about their future. It seems the question never was will you go to college but what college will you go to, what is your career goal, have a plan. They all seem to be leaving your Graduation from page 1 Scholarship recipients Jr. Hawk Southeast Missouri State University Scholarship, $500 - Asia Bateman John D. This is their second year helping LFLA students. “He can’t spell and I can’t add, so we’re perfect for each other,” said Marilyn Goldwasser, a retired speech pathologist. Their tutoring strategies are different, too. He likes to stay in the classroom to assist with prealgebra drafting, while she prefers working with students one-on-one as they craft their personal narratives in the quiet of the hallway. But they both agree on one thing: The dedication of the LFLA teachers. “The students need to get the basics down to do well in school,” Bob Goldwasser said. “They’re doing better here than they were in the public schools they came out of. The kids are all at so many levels. It’s a tough thing for teachers to manage, but that’s where I think we are helpful.” And for us, “It’s a fun morning.” Gazette | Summer 2013 7 NON-PROFIT ORG.
