The kids are out of school and I have an excuse to soak up a little sun and have some fun as long as they don’t make me stay outside more than 10 minutes. Otherwise, I get cranky and have to bark a lot, which wears me out and then I am forced to nap the rest of the day. This means I have to get this work thing done quickly, not that I am complaining… It’s amazing, I have done this gig for three months already and I’m still loving it. The response we have been getting from our readers has been great and the interest is growing. All the enthusiasm and kind words are greatly appreciated and great for my job security. I wouldn’t want some young pup coming in and taking my spot on the couch. Oh yes, June is going to be a great month whether you are planning family vacations or just spending time with Dad on Father’s Day. Yep, you read it right, don’t say I didn’t remind you but you better not forget June 17th is Father’s Day. Dads seem to get a little grumpy when you celebrate Mother’s Day then skip his day even though Dads are harder to buy for. You can’t just pick some flowers or get some candy, and that whole tie thing never works… I even suggested a bark collar, but Mom said that would really get me in the doghouse. If you ask me, everyday is Dad’s day but since no one seems to be asking me...my point is, no matter what you have planned this month, it’s summer. Enjoy it and remember to keep reading Dock Line Magazine and tell all your friends about us. Coco says you can even check us out on Facebook and she would know. She’s much better working with the computer than I am. Though reversible in its initial stages, mounting evidence has shown a strong relationship between oral bacteria and life-threatening diseases such as oral cancer; heart disease; diabetes, respiratory ailments; and premature/low birth weight babies makes it critical that the condition be prevented or treated aggressively. Heart Disease—The number one killer among men and women, killing almost a million people a year. Numerous research studies have shown a link between cardiovascular disease and key bacterium in periodontal disease. While research continues to explore the link, it is important to treat periodontal disease aggressively so its impact on heart disease can be reduced or eliminated. Diabetes—A chronic disease and is the fourth leading cause of death among American. It is estimated that nearly 16 million people in the U.S. have the disease and 95 percent of Americans with diabetes also have periodontal disease, due in part to an increased susceptibility to infections. Research has shown that people with periodontal disease have more difficulty controlling their blood sugar levels while periodontal disease can increase the risk of developing diabetes. Your first line of defense against periodontal disease is to visit your dental hygienist. In addition to helping patients understand the connection between oral health care and overall health, dental hygienists educate their patients about proper oral hygiene and treat periodontal disease to prevent the condition from advancing and complicating other diseases. Often they will recommend you see an orthodontist to align your teeth in a healthier more cleansable position. Invisalign trays are an excellent way to get that proper alignment. Because they are removable, Invisalign is a great treatment option for periodontal patients where cleaning your teeth can be more difficult. u HOLDING BACK IS A THING OF THE PAST A NEW SMILE LETS YOU BLOOM If you’re uncomfortable with your teeth, you could be holding back who you really are. But Invisalign’s clear, custom-designed aligners can be an inconspicuous way to get a beautiful new smile. So check with an experienced Invisalign provider and let the real you bloom with a new smile. STRAIGHT TEETH ARE WITHIN REACH. Call today for a free, no-obligation consultation. Over the years, the SJRA has partnered with the Harris County Flood Control District, the National Weather Service, the United States Geologic Survey, the National Hydrologic Warning Council, the TCEQ Dam Safety Program, and the Gulf Coast River Forecast Center in Fort Worth. Numerous agencies collaborate on weather data to improve accuracy and reduce costs, and one of the latest developments in this collaborative approach is the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) established by the National Weather Service, which is supported nationally by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The following article by Jeff Lindner, the CoCoRaHS Houston/Galveston Regional Coordinator, explains the CoCoRaHS project and describes how you can get involved as a local weather data collector. Every Drop Counts: Join The Backyard Weather Network and Fill in the Gaps Help weather experts keep track of where and how much it rains in your neighborhood by volunteering to be a “data collector” for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS). The race is on to add thousands of volunteers to the Houston/Galveston regional network! The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow). You do not have to have a meteorology degree or list of credentials to volunteer for CoCoRaHS – you just need to have an interest in observing and reporting weather conditions and a desire to learn more about how weather can affect and impact our lives, region, and nation. What do CoCoRaHS volunteers do? Utilizing an official CoCoRaHS rain gage set up in a strategic location, a volunteer is asked to take precipitation measurements each day in approximately a two hour window between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. central time and then record those measurements on the CoCoRaHS website (www.cocorahs.org). The data is organized and displayed on the website for the general public’s observation and use. The National Weather Service, meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, city utilities (water supply, water conservation, stormwater), insurance adjusters, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, engineers, mosquito control, ranchers and farmers, teachers and students, and residents utilize the information to do everything from severe storm analysis to comparisons of how much rain fell in neighboring backyards. Jeff Lindner, CoCoRaHS Harris/Galveston Regional Coordinator, said CoCoRaHS volunteers’ precipitation reports help to fill in the gaps between official rainfall data collection sites in our region, such as the Harris 12 Dock Line Magazine - Tomball Edition June 2012 County Flood Control District’s Flood Warning System (www.harriscountyfws.org), the Lower Colorado River Authority’s Hydromet System http://hydromet.lcra.org/full.aspx., and the National Weather Service’s climate sites. Consequently, weather forecasters must use radar estimations to determine rainfall amounts and the result is typically less or more than actual rainfall totals. Additionally, the further away from the radar site the less accurate the estimation making ground truth reports even more valuable. “Grassroots rainfall reports determine what is actually happening,” said Lindner, who is the Harris County Flood Control District’s meteorologist. “The more volunteers and rainfall data we have during and after an event, the better we are able to define how much it has rained and what the impacts will be on lake levels, water supply, and any areas of flooding.” The Houston/Galveston Network Lindner said the Houston/Galveston Region (Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Jackson, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Waller, and Wharton counties) has only 150-250 volunteers members and needs many more to accurately measure precipitation across the region. To join, go to the CoCoRaHS website (www.cocorahs.org) and click on the “Join CoCoRaHS” emblem in the upper right corner of the home page. The website also offers a wealth of information on the organization’s background, training and educational tools, what type of rain gage is required and how and where to set it up on your property, and much more. About the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS)? In July 1997, a devastating flash flood dumped over 12 inches of rain on sections of Fort Collins, Colorado, resulting in $200 million in damages. In 1998, the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) launched at the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University with the goal of making improvements in the mapping and reporting of intense storms. As more volunteers joined the network, rain, hail, and snow maps were produced for storms of all shapes and sizes and the resulting data patterns caught the interest of scientists and the general public. By 2010, CoCoRaHS was a nationwide volunteer network. The organization’s goals include providing accurate high-quality precipitation data for end users on a timely basis; increasing the density of precipitation data available throughout the country by encouraging volunteer weather observing; encouraging citizens to have fun participating in meteorological science and heightening their awareness about weather; and, providing enrichment activities in water and weather resources for teachers, educators and the community at large. CoCoRaHS is supported nationally by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Partners in Texas include the Office of the State Climatologist (Dr. John Nielsen-Gammon) at Texas A&M University, the Lower Colorado River Authority, the Department of Geography and the Environment at the University of Texas at Austin, the Harris County Flood Control District, and many other agencies. u ORIGINALLY RELEASED ON: March 27, 2012 FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: Jeff Lindner, CoCoRaHS Houston/Galveston Regional Coordinator [email protected] www.cocorahs.org Dock Line Magazine - Tomball Edition June 2012 13 14 Dock Line Magazine - Tomball Edition June 2012 Photofacials By: Dr. David Reeves Photofacial can seem to be a simple process, almost like taking a “photo” of a face. But this simple procedure can cause truly earth-shaking changes in your skin. Individuals that have used this process can truly turn back the aging process. It is also the most skin-safe, comfortable, and effective treatment available with little or no downtime. Photofacial appointments are quick and you can return to work or other activities quickly. Redness and swelling are limited to a few hours usually. Removing sun damage and unsightly veins can make visible improvements to your appearance, shaving away years. Specialized hand pieces which filter light to target blood vessels and pigmented lesions are cooled to make treatments more confortable. Each band of the light spectrum has a wavelength that is ideal for different treatments, such as sunspot removal, vessel clearance and reducing fine lines. The hallmark change is collagen production that thickens the skin and makes it look younger. Our “Pulsed Light System” uses a larger treatment window than most other lasers. This spreads the light over awider area of skin and allows faster coverage of the skin and quicker treatments as a result. Most areas, except around the eyes can be treated including the face, neck, chest, arms, back and legs. Your treatment provider will move the hand piece over the treated area sending a beam of light through your skin. Each pulse will send a beam of light through your skin. A flashing light, an audible tone, and a mild sensation on the skin will tell you when the hand piece is being pulsed. Immediately after treatment, you can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling. This usually lasts for 2-24 hours and can be soothed by cold gel or ice packs. Sunspots and general sun damage will darken after treatment and flake away in 1-2 weeks. Rosacea will improve and be less red. Spider veins will disappear after treatment, or they may darken and gradually fade. Typically, several treatments are necessary to treat these skin conditions. But the most remarkable and most long acting change in your skin will be almost invisible at first. Collage formation will be increased and fine lines that would normally appear during the aging process will be delayed. Your skin will truly improve at all levels. u Dock Line Magazine - Tomball Edition June 2012 15 EATING RULES FOR ROAD TRIPS Summer time is here! Father’s Day, School’s Out, the list goes on! So what does that mean for you and your family? That it is time again to think about road trips!! If you don’t want to add more to the pounds you’ve accumulated over the winter hibernation, as well as be in discomfort for sitting for long periods, keep these rules in mind for eating and staying healthier on the road: • Pack along a variety of nutritious foods. Don’t rely on fast food to carry you through the trip. Instead pack veggies and fruit for energy, as well as high-protein foods like tuna, low-fat cheese, and low-fat peanut butter on saltines. Protein bars that are low in sugar are also a great way to go. Check out https://www.advocare.com/10103081 o Click on Shop Now, then Active Line, then Snack bars. These are wonderful and kids love them. • Don’t drive too long before eating. That just makes you hungrier and more likely to pull into the fast-food or convenience-store joints to get a quick fix. • Drink a lot of water. It keeps you full, and, of course, water’s benefits have no bounds. If it’s really hot out add Electrolytes to your water. Check out www.advocare.com/10103081 o Click on Shop Now, then Active Line, then Rehydrate (three different flavors and sugar free). • Stay away from the candy bars. High-sugar and high-fat snacks are high in calories and low on nutritional value. And keep you feeling more hungry! • When pain creeps up on you, ICE is your best friend. Keep a couple of ice packs in the cooler when traveling long distances. This is great if the low back or neck is bothering you. Ice for 20 minutes over the spine. Remember safety first by putting a cloth or shirt between the ice pack and your skin. • Lumbar support in your car is also important. You can find examples of good lumbar supports at websites like www.coreproducts.com or even in the auto section of Wal-Mart or Target. Before and After your road trips get into our clinic and get your spine aligned. It makes for happier, healthier, pain free trips as we get busy this summer. We take insurance, personal injury (car accidents), worker’s compensation and affordable cash plans. u Best Wishes and Safe Travel, Dr. Jamie Marshall Quality of Life Chiropractic 281-789-4182 Adding Life to our years! “There’s New Marshall in Town! Winner of Distinction 2010 & 2011 NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF THE REMODELING INDUSTRY Tomball Police Department Takes to the “Open” Skies No doors? No roof? No problem, not for the pilot officers who have been flying an Auto-Gyro MTO Sport gyroplane to provide aerial support to the Tomball (Texas) Police Department since March 2011. The Auto-Gyro MTO Sport, a two-seat, open cockpit gyroplane, costs approximately $75,000 to purchase and about $50 an hour to operate, and runs on the same type of gasoline used in automobiles. It needs minimal room to take off and land, and uses very little hangar space. The craft can fly at speeds up to 115 mph or as slow as 0 mph. Add all of those pluses together, and Tomball’s use of the MTO Sport gyroplane scored high enough to be named one of the “Top 30 Law Enforcement Tecnology Stories of 2011” by Government Technology (http://www. govtech.com/public-safety/The-Top-30-Law-Enforcement-Technology-Stories-of-2011.html). Tomball, a municipality of approximately 15,000 people located in Houston’s suburban Harris County, used Office of Justice Programs’ National Institute of Justice (NIJ) assistance to launch the nation’s first-ever law enforcement gyroplane. “In 2009, I attended the NIJ Applied Technologies Conference in Coronado, Calif., where I saw a demonstration of a powered parachute,” says Tomball Chief Robert S. Hauck. (See TechBeat, Summer 2006). “That was my introduction to the NIJ Aviation Technology Program and nonconventional aircraft. Before coming to Tomball, I spent 20 years with the Los Angeles Police Department, and just took for granted that aerial support was available to officers on the ground 24/7. When I came to the Houston area, I discovered that resources were much more limited.” Hauck initially expressed interest in obtaining a powered parachute for use in Tomball, but learned that the prevailing Texas winds made its use impractical. The program wanted to look at the Auto-Gyro for testing and evaluation, and Hauck and two of his officers eventually found themselves attending a week of training along with a certified pilot from the Harris County Sheriff ’s Office. Harris County has served as a “mentoring partner” to Tomball on the project. “When [NIJ Aviation Technology Program Manager] Mike O’Shea asked me to make a presentation on behalf of Tomball to the Aviation Technology Working Group in 2010, I told him I’d be glad to come, but I reminded him I wasn’t a pilot,” Hauck says. “He said that’s why he wanted me to come, because I had 20 years of ground experience and knew the value of aerial support, and I wasn’t making a pitch because I was a pilot and thought it would be cool to fly a gyroplane. So I went in and told the committee, ‘I can guarantee you there is not a person in this room who has less experience with flying than me, because my experience is zero.’ ” The working group heeded Hauck’s words and on March 25, 2011, the gyroplane flew its first mission, providing aerial support at a community festival. Since then, the 60-officer agency has found many uses for the Auto-Gyro, including aggressive driver patrols, incident patrols, aerial photography and event support. The demonstration project has a goal of reporting best practices, actual operating costs and other benefits to NIJ following 300 operational hours of flight time. According to O’Shea, NIJ had researched the Auto- Gyro and found it to have an outstanding safety record in addition to being affordable to small and rural agencies that cannot afford to spend $3 million on a helicopter to provide aerial support. Those findings placed it alongside powered parachutes and light-sport aircraft as options offered to agencies that participate in the program’s demonstration efforts. “There have been some challenges with training,” Hauck says. “When you start an aviation program and you have no pilots, it takes time to get things up and running. Tomball made a commitment to the project, but we couldn’t have done it without NIJ’s support and technical expertise or the support we’ve received from Harris County. Hauck of the Tomball (Texas) Police Department says he has been “amazed” at the varied uses and success stories his 60-officer department has found for the Auto-Gyro MTO Sport gyroplane it has been flying since March 2011: “We’ve backed up the Harris County Sheriff ’s Office when its aircraft have been down for maintenance,” Hauck says. “In the city of Houston, they have multimillion dollar helicopters that they can only fly six hours a day due to economic constraints, so we’ve been helping out with daytime patrol over the Houston shipping channel, which is the third largest port in the country. That made me realize that for specific missions, there really can be a place for alternative aircraft in large agencies. Their use would allow them to save the other aircraft for night missions, for inclement weather, or when they need video.” Hauck cited several other successful missions for the Tomball Auto-Gyro, including: ■ Helping locate two missing persons, one an 80-year-old man with Alzheimer’s who walked away from a nursing home, the other a mentally ill woman in her 50s who had disappeared. In the woman’s case, Hauck says the Auto-Gyro crew spotted a culvert that looked like a possible hiding place and directed officers on the ground to the site. “When they looked inside, she was curled up about 10 feet in, and she looked at the EMS chief and the police officer and said, ‘I’ve been waiting for you.’ ” ■ Assisting the Harris County Sheriff ’s Office in pursuit of two grand theft auto suspects, one of whom shot at officers during the chase. Again, the Auto-Gyro crew helped direct officers on the ground toward the suspects, who had separated. ■ Supporting incident commanders during the September 2011 Tri-County wildfires (Montgomery, Waller, Grimes), considered the worst in Texas history. “I thought we’d maybe be doing daytime burglary mitigation, traffic control, backing up officers on routine calls and setting up perimeters now and then,” Hauck says. “I didn’t imagine doing things like saving lives, catching cop killers and helping provide homeland security to one of the biggest ports in America. I quickly learned that when you’re up in the air, the officers on the ground and the community don’t care what you are flying as long as you can help catch the bad guys from the air.” This article was reprinted from the Spring 2012 edition of TechBeat, the quarterly newsmagazine of the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center System, a program of the National Institute of Justice under Cooperative Agreement #2010–MU–MU–K020, awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice. The Brazilian Blowout is the most innovative and effective professional smoothing treatment in the world. Through the use of a Brazilian Super Nutrient Complex and a proprietary polymer system, the Brazilian Blowout actually improves the condition of the hair by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle. The end result is smooth, healthy, conditioned hair with radiant shine. The Brazilian Blowout is the perfect solution for those of you that use a flat iron daily to keep your hair soft and straight. It helps you maintain the sexy straight look without the worry of Houston humidity. Imagine the joy of waking up each morning with hair that remains soft, silky, healthy and picture perfect! There will still be the option to wear hair curly/wavy (depending on the hair type) and the freedom to blow dry hair smooth and straight in a fraction of the time invested prior to receiving the treatment. If your hair is wavy, the Brazilian Blowout will make your hair appear naturally straight and healthy. If your hair is very curly, it will minimize frizz while enhancing the appearance of the natural wave/curl. If you have straight, frizzy hair, this treatment will eliminate frizz and promote radiant shine. In general, the Brazilian Blowout lasts about 10 to 12 weeks between treatments for most people. With course, thicker hair, you may want to have the treatment every one to two months. All types of hair will benefit from the improvement in health that is seen with the Brazilian Blowout, including color-treated or chemically treated hair. The Brazilian Blowout will actually improve the health of color-treated and highlighted hair by conditioning the hair while sealing the cuticle for enhanced color, reduced frizz and radiant shine. The Brazilian Blowout system has recently been in the press over concerns about the small dose of formaldehyde gas that is released during treatment. OSHA has deemed it a level 1 risk (slight hazard designation) on their four point scale that may cause redness or itching in the eyes and a sore throat and coughing in some individuals. The safety of our guests at Evia Spa is always a top priority, which is why we also feature the Brazilian Blowout ZERO+ treatment. The Brazilian Blowout ZERO+ utilizes an improved proprietary Plant-Derived KeraSafe Bonding System to effectively deposit and seal essential amino acids onto the hair. KeraSafe is a proprietary blend of ingredients combining the original Brazilian Blowout Super Nutrient Complex, rich with powerful smoothing ingredients such as camu camu and annatto seed, with a highly innovative Plant-Derived Bonding System that effectively smoothes and seals the cuticle by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and promote shine. The Brazilian Blowout ZERO+ has been designed to have 0% Formaldehyde released before, during or after the treatment while still creating smooth, frizzfree hair that lasts up to 12 weeks. The Brazilian Blowout ZERO+ has been shown to be most effective with clients that have thinner hair or less challenging waves and/or curls and actually promotes volume at the root area of the hair for exceptional body and bounce. Often, our guests look at the cost of $300 for the Brazilian Blowout treatment and wonder if it is the right solution for them. I prefer to look at the treatment in a different way. If you could have a professional blow-dry each morning for less than $4, most people would jump at the opportunity. The Brazilian Blowout treatment basically gives you this by cutting your morning hair prep time in half and giving you shining, luxurious hair for months all for less than your morning cup of Starbucks coffee. There are lots of valid reasons to use our finite water resources more efficiently...here are just a few. Our population is growing... and growing... and growing. That means more homes and more paved areas, which means that stormwater runs off instead of seeping into the ground to help recharge our aquifers. The more water we pump from the ground, the greater the strain we place on our aquifers. Not only do more people need more water, but wildlife needs it to survive, too. Many places around the globe are facing serious droughts, deteriorating water quality, aquifer depletion, and precious few alternatives for finding replacement supplies. “In the past, we may have considered ‘water conservation’ as a standby or emergency response to supply shortages,” explains Kathy Turner Jones, General Manager of the Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District, “but it is time to change that outdated mindset and understand that efficient use of our water supplies is, in fact, a viable, long-term supply option -- the water we conserve today can serve us tomorrow!” The days of cheap and plentiful water are history. So, if you’re going to make the commitment to changing your wasteful use habits, what steps will give you the biggest return on your efforts? What steps will save you the most water... and therefore the most money? Here’s what the experts suggest... Inside the house... 1. STOP THOSE LEAKS! Pay attention to your indoor water usage. That means check routinely for leaks...leaking faucets, leaking toilets, leaking appliances. Watch your water bill...suspect a leak if you have any sudden increase in usage without changing your usual patterns. Studies have shown that more than 10 percent of the water used in the home can be due to leaks...which is serious money down the drain. Fixing leaky faucets and plumbing joints can save 20 gallons a day for each one stopped. The single greatest water waster in the home is a leaking TOILET...a leak of one gallon every six minutes -- not an unusual amount -- adds up to ten gallons an hour, or 240 gallons per day! A leaking toilet can double the total monthly water usage by the whole household. Most toilet leaks involve poorly seated tank balls, worn valves, or other minor components that are relatively easy to fix. Unfortunately, many toilets are silent while flushing your dollars down the drain...so check all the toilets for leaks regularly! 2. IN THE BATHROOM... While we’re on the subject of toilets...if yours are more than 15 years old, replace those water-guzzling 5-7 gallon flush toilets with the the now-mandated 1.6 gallon per flush models. You can check the date stamp inside the toilet tank for the make, model and date of manufacture. If it is before 1992, replace it...you’ll start to see the payback on the first water bill. Just so you know...toilets flush about 27 percent of a household’s water down the drain. Next, consider your shower use. Do you have water-saving -- or flow restricting -- shower heads? Replacing old ones can save 500 to 800 gallons a month. And, how long do you shower? Even a one or two minute reduction in time can save up to 700 gallons a month. Multiply that by the number of people in your household and now we’re talking about some serious water savings! Something as minor as turning off the water while you brush your teeth can save another three gallons a day. Here’s a cool tip -- while you are waiting for the water to get hot, capture some of that water in a plastic container and use it to water plants or for pets. 3. IN THE KITCHEN AND LAUNDRY... Here’s where you’ll find some more thirsty appliances. Again, depending on how old these workhorses are, you might realize a significant savings in the long run -- in both water and energy usage -- if you replace them. The washing machine, for example, is the second largest water user in your home, accounting for as much as 22 percent of the total residential water use. Today, there is a good variety of high-efficiency (HE) clothes washers on the market, most with the front loading drums that require only 27 gallons or less per load. In comparison, conventional washers between 1980 to 1990 used roughly 56 gallons of water per load, so this is a savings of about 50 percent! If you combine the conserving technology with efficient use practices -- running only with full loads, selecting minimum volume settings and shorter water cycles -- even more savings are possible. In the kitchen, the way you use your dishwasher and garbage disposal can impact the amount of water they consume. The water efficiency of dish washers has improved steadily since the mid 1990’s and, since they are typically not used more than once a day, they do not account for a huge portion of the household demand. Today’s newer, efficient models, however, use only half of what the earlier ones did...about 7 gallons per load. Again, avoiding waste is the key here...and using a dishwasher properly can actually consume less water than doing them by hand. Use with full loads only; minimize pre-washing by scraping off food using a utensil not water; make sure dishes are positioned to get good water flow during the cycle; and select the shortest practical cycle. Garbage disposals use a surprisingly large amount of water as they grind solid food waste into small particles that water washes down the drain. Consider composting your food scraps...this saves water twice -- in the kitchen and in the final organic product which reduces the need for water for your plants. Outside the house... 4. LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND PLANT SELECTION... Now we’re talking some serious water and money savings opportuContinued on page 22 1 Dock Line Magazine - Tomball Edition June 2012 21 nities. First, some things to think about. Did you know, that for a typical Texas single-family home, about 80 percent of the water used during the spring and summer watering seasons is for lawn irrigation? And that 50 percent of that water is WASTED? The fact is that excessive irrigation not only increases water costs, but it drains our water supply sources, adds to pollution with runoff of fertilizers and other chemicals, and demands a significant amount of our time and resources for maintenance. Americans spend more than $750 million each year on residential turf grass...and another $25 billion for mowers, hoses, clippers, and gardening tools. The amount of lawn fertilizers -- chemicals -- applied by homeowners on these lawns and landscapes is nearly 10 times the amount of pesticides (per acres of turf) than farmers use on crops! Let’s start with design. There are lots of important considerations: the area available for landscaping, soil conditions, the general climate and annual rainfall patterns, where the sun hits -- and doesn’t reach -- during the day, plant selectionand water requirements, and the basic use for the area and overall aesthetic preferences. A residential yard with a water-wise design can be just as attractive, lush and colorful as what is thought of as a ‘traditional’ landscaped area. Think outside the box. The largest water savings to be achieved through waterwise landscapes are accomplished by reducing turf areas -- especially if the grass variety is especially thirsty, like St. Augustine. Studies of residential properties that have utilized waterwise techniques suggest that actual water savings of 20 - 50 percent can be achieved. Redesigning a home’s lawn and landscape areas will certainly have some initial costs -- how high depends on the budget -- but the longterm benefits and potential water savings will be worth it. The concept of “Xeriscape” or water-wise designs is often misunderstood. These are NOT just recreations of desert environments using rocks and cactus; these principles utilize native and adaptive plants from the area in which they are created. Using native and low-water-use plants and grasses is the key to controlling irrigation demand. If you’re in doubt, experts say that “native plants” have three distinguishing characteristics: 1. It ‘arrived’ by means of water, wind, the fur of a migrating animal, or by bird or animal droppings; 2. The plant evolved over a long period of time and now thrives; and 3. It has not been ‘tampered with’ by humans. It is the place of origin that determines whether or not it is native to the region. Selecting drought-tolerant or droughtresistant plants is an22 Dock Line Magazine - Tomball Edition June 2012 Look at the standing water in the grass above...and the sprinkler is still running! This is some serious water waste! WATER ONLY WHEN NEEDED! other key strategy to not only reduce the need for supplemental water but to increase their incidence of survival, as well. Soil quality influences how well plants will survive or thrive, so the first step should be to have the soil analyzed. Soil tests are usually inexpensive and can be performed by cooperative extension offices and some plant nurseries or local farmers markets. The basic test will show the pH level and identify what amendments are needed to increase the nutrients. Select the plants after the soil test is complete to know which are best suited for the soil you have to work with. The use of mulch will help save water by reducing evaporation, cooling the soil, and controlling weeds. Using organic mulch (grass clippings, shredded leaves, wood chips, bark mulches, and pine ‘straw’) and compost in flower beds can significantly reduce the amount of water the plants will need to thrive. 5. IRRIGATION... Poor irrigation scheduling -- watering too often and for too long -is the number one source of water waste associated with irrigation, followed by poor system design, inefficient equipment, and poor maintenance. Apply water only when and where it is needed. Just because you have a sprinkler system, don’t assume that you are using water efficiently. Even the most elaborate sprinkler system can waste water because owners either don’t know how or don’t bother to set the frequency and timing controls after the initial settings. Experts suggest that, for proper efficiency, the entire irrigation system controllers be reprogrammed at least monthly to respond to changing rainfall and temperatures. The entire system should be checked for leaks periodically, too. Installing a device that shuts off an automatic irrigation system when it has rained or is raining -- a rain sensor or “smart technology” -- can save up to 10 percent of water used outdoors. If you don’t have one, get one. Find and repair any broken heads, seals or pipes in your irrigation system. Watch the entire cycle to make sure that the water is going where it is needed and that all areas you intend to water are getting wet. Make control modifications as appropriate. If serious water savings interest you, consider replacing a conventional sprinkler system for nonturf areas with a drip-irrigation system -- the savings can be as much as 75 percent. The price to install can range from a do-it-yourself project ($50$100) to a custom installation costing up to $1.50 per square foot. Remember, YOU are the most important water conservation ‘tool’ at your house. Make using water more efficiently a priority! u The Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District was created by the 77th legislature in 2001 to protect and manage the groundwater resources of Montgomery County. To a parent, this is an extremely simple request; however, to a child, it is quite complex. When a parent says “pick up your toy,” what we actually mean is ‘pick up your toy off the floor, place it in the toy box, and close the toy box’. When we get busy we often lose sight of how our children receive our commands. With three-step prompting, we are breaking down the command into simple and contextual terms coupled with guided modeling. The following gives a breakdown of the steps and how to properly use them. A Parents Guide to Simple Behavior Modification Part 3: How to Deliver a Demand with Three-Step Prompting In part I and II of this series, we discussed rebuilding relationships and planned ignoring as tools to create compliance in children. Compliance is a term often used to describe whether a child does or does not complete an instruction given by a parent or caregiver. The focus this month is how to deliver a demand with three-step prompting. It is no secret that consistency and routine will foster compliance with a child; 3-step prompting builds on this principle resulting in an exchange between the parent and child which is both effective and reinforcing. Three-step prompting; otherwise known as guided compliance, incorporates positive reinforcement, eye contact, gentle touching and behavioral modeling to dramatically improve a child’s response to a parents command. As with most techniques, to be effective, the parents must be consistent. We cannot expect our children to be consistent if we ourselves do not remain consistent. Keep in mind this technique should be used for simple commands and is most effective when used with children around 12 years old or younger. How Does it Work? Three-step prompting is best used when par- Step I Give your child a simple command such as “pick up your toy”. If your child complies on the first request, offer simple verbal praise (positive reinforcement) such as “good job”. If your child does not comply, look them directly in the eye, say their name, and gently (if necessary) touch them on their chin to gain eye contact. Step II Means you physically do exactly what your are requesting from your child by picking up the toy, walking to the toy box and placing the toy and closing the toy box. This time, If your child complies with this request, offer simple verbal praise in the form of “good job”. If your child did not comply within 10 seconds of the command, continue to the step three. Step III Repeat the command, “pick up your toy” while gently guiding your child to complete the command. This can be done with gentle a guided push on their back, leading by holding their hand, or even hand-over-hand physical guidance. Hand-over-hand guidance, is exactly that; place your hand over the top of their hand and together you pick up the toy, place it in the box and close the box. The key to success with the three-step prompt is consistency and a lack of emotion. Do not display anger or allow the tone or volume of your voice to change when implementing steps II or III. The purpose of steps II and III are to show (in literal terms) exactly what you expect from your command. Guided compliance takes all the guess work away from your child by giving them a tangible example. The three-step prompt is quite simple to implement and should only be used with minor non-compliant behaviors. If a child is demonstrating severe or dangerous behaviors, always contact a professional prior to beginning any intervention program. u Follow Us on Facebook www.facebook.com/pages/ Dock-Line-Magazine/160216724035734 Dock Line Magazine - Tomball Edition June 2012 23 24 Dock Line Magazine - Tomball Edition June 2012 By: Steven Wong Louis A. You know the rest of the story. What most people don’t know is that every culture has their own version of Cinderella. The version we know comes from France in 1697. However, there are several thousand different versions from around the world. The earliest version can be traced to China around 850 A.D. Nigerian, Korean, British, American Indian, and many more cultures have oral traditions with their own versions of Cinderella. The unique aspect of the French version is the notion of the glass slipper. So why does every culture have some version of Cinderella? The Internet offers many advantages for consumers looking for information and products. Online purchasing is convenient and private, and in some cases may offer cost savings for individuals. However, before you buy devices such as hearing aids online, here are some things you should know: • A hearing aid is a complex medical device, not a simple sound amplifier. • Hearing aids have digital technology that can be set by an audiologist to meet your personal hearing needs. • Hearing aids bought online without a complete hearing test and other necessary hearing aid services may not meet your needs or 28 Dock Line Magazine - Tomball Edition June 2012 identify correctable medical conditions. • Setting hearing aids for your needs requires specific computer software that interacts with you, the user, to determine the most custom settings for you. For some online businesses, getting the hearing aid settings changed may only be possible by shipping the hearing aid back to the manufacturer, which means you will have to go without your hearing aid for a while, and you will not be present to provide input for adjustments. • To help with your adjustment to hearing aids, audiologists generally provide office visits, reprogramming, counseling, and support when you buy a hearing aid from them. Hearing aids purchased online will generally not include these services or will be available for an office visit charge. After a few office visits, you may spend more than if you purchased locally. Most local providers will match insurance or online discounts, and include office visits. Frequently hearing aids will be reprogrammed within a couple of weeks from delivery and will be reprogrammed throughout the life of the instrument based on changing needs or changes in hearing. • If you suspect you have a hearing loss, have a comprehensive audiological evaluation. Medicare pays for this evaluation if you see a Medicare provider. Audiologists have a least a Master’s degree in hearing science, and most are Medicare providers as any other healthcare provider. Your audiologist is educated to determine if your hearing loss is of the medically treatable type, or only treatable with amplification. For children 18 years old or younger, a medical evaluation is required prior to a hearing aid fitting. • Online hearing screens cannot tell you the cause of hearing loss—the cause may be something as minor as too much earwax or as serious as a brain tumor. Currently, online hearing screens can only alert you that your hearing is not normal and that you need further testing. Success with hearing aids begins with a complete hearing test by an audiologist. For accuracy, hearing tests are conducted in sound-treated rooms using special earphones and equipment that have been calibrated to national standards. Online hearing screens do not meet these standards and may lead to inaccurate test results. The hearing test begins with a thorough discussion about your lifestyle, listening needs, medical history, and any other concerns you may have. This will help with the selection of the special features you might need in your hearing aids. Your audiologist will perform several different tests to determine what benefits you can expect from hearing aids: • The audiogram is a record of the type and degree of your hearing loss and how well you can hear soft tones at different pitches. It is more than a hearing screening. • Speech testing is a measure of how well you can hear and understand speech in quiet and background noise. • Loudness discomfort testing and most comfort testing will measure your ability to tolerate loud sounds, identify comfort zones and will help the audiologists set the hearing aids. Following the testing, the audiologist will explain the results and work with you to develop a plan to improve your hearing and communication. This discussion is important for understanding your hearing loss and what you can expect from hearing aids if they are recommended for you. With a better understanding of you and your hearing loss, your audiologist may recommend hearing assistive technology (e.g., telephone amplifiers, TV devices, FM systems, audio-loops) to help you hear better in situations where hearing aids may be of less help (e.g., in a car, when the TV is on, or in groups of people talking). Hearing assistive technology can be used alone or with hearing aids. Get the most out of your hearing aids. If hearing aids are recommended, you will continue to work with your audiologist to ensure that the hearing aid is meeting your needs and that you are happy with the sound quality and improvements in communication. • When you purchase hearing aids through a hearing aid dispensing practice, you are assured that the audiologist is appropriately licensed and has the computer software to make changes to the function of your hearing aids. When hearing aids are purchased online, it may be difficult to get adjustments locally if the dispenser does not have access to the programming software. • You will learn how to care for and use your hearing aids and be able to demonstrate this comfortably before you leave the office. • You will learn about your hearing loss, what to expect with the new devices, and how to function best in different listening environments. Additional fitting follow up and counseling is valuable and can continue until you are satisfied. • Be sure to bring family members or significant others along to your appointments. It is important that they understand how you communicate best. Some audiologists offer special classes designed to help you live successfully with hearing loss. • Properly fitted devices, counseling, and support go a long way toward improving your listening and satisfaction with these complex digital devices. A bad experience with hearing aids can make you less likely to try again. Success with hearing aids involves more than the device. Face-to-face care from knowledgeable professionals is the key to improving your hearing and communication with your new hearing aids. To find a certified audiologist who can make difference in your life, you may visit the ASHA or AAA websites, or simply Google a local audiologist. u Related resource: Minnesota Department of Health News Release This month Coastal Bend Foundation would like to talk with our friends at Dock Line Magazine about maintenance and repair of Pier and Wood Beam foundations. “Pier & Beam” or “Block & Base Houses” settle and crack because the wooden beam foundation at the base is unable to support the structure. Structural integrity can be affected do to age, weather and moisture or termite damage. The shrinking and swelling of soil due to drought or increased moisture can cause the house to shift and move. If you have drywall cracks, sticking doors or windows that won’t shut and lock, you may need your house levelled. We begin with an inspection under the house so our technicians can assess the condition of the beams and the concrete block bases that support the structure. In some instances piers need to be installed under the concrete blocks to support the weight of the house. Many builders just set base concrete blocks into the soil four inches then set the block on top of them. This method usually requires yearly maintenance to adjust and level the house. If piers are installed under the blocks, the house can go for years without an adjustment. If the house is out of level, then the first step is to replace any rotten or damaged beams. Beams can be replaced from under the house by our technicians. Once the beams are of good structural integrity then the blocks can be levelled under the beams to properly support the house. In some instances a new beam may be needed in an area that formally did not have one to get the house properly stabilized and the weight loads evenly distributed. Once these two steps are completed the house is gradually lifted to its original line of construction. Cedar or steel shims with termite caps are then installed on top of the blocks where they come in contact with the beams for the final adjustment. If you have questions about your pier and beam house, or any foundation question please contact us for a free estimate or consultation at 1-866-577-1664. u Dedicated to Hope, Healing and Recovery Kindred Hospital Tomball provides long-term acute care to medically complex patients requiring extended recovery time.
