LUCAN
Sunday 10th January 1999
Sub.30p
WHY BE THERE?
Different times of the year focus us on different aspects of Lucan life. Just as Spring follows Winter
(even if it is difficult to notice), Christian Unity Week slots into January every year. (18th - 25th
January). We don our Ecumenical hats for a week or so and then move on with appropriate speed
and reverence to the next event, or perhaps it passes by unnoticed or with a large dose of disinterest.
I am happy to say that in Lucan and Leixlip there is an ongoing spirit of friendship and support
among the Church of Ireland, Methodist, Catholic and Presbyterian Churches. The ministers meet
monthly and a true bond of friendship and understanding has emerged. Last year a group of lay
representatives began to meet, hoping to create a similar bond of friendship and understanding based
on our common faith. For any progress at any level meeting together is fundamental and essential.
The greatest scandal of Christianity is the division of churches and our priority should be to see how
we can respect our different traditions, rituals and insights, see the richness in our diversity that
enhances rather than diminishes us. Last year a joint committee of lay people and ministers was set
up to organise Christian Unity Week at a local level. The main Service in Lucan will take place on
Sunday 24th January at 3pm in St. Andrews Church of Ireland - put the date in your diary!
We decided also to organise a social event, with a dual purpose. Firstly to come together socially
and by our physical presence as Christians make a statement of solidarity and our desire for greater
understanding friendship and reconciliation with one another.
Secondly, to raise much needed funds to support the flood victims in Central America. So, we are
asking that We Be There!

TH ANK YO U LIONS
A large number o f our Lucan Senior Citizens
have recently received Personal Alarms to
provide security in their own homes. The
entire project cost in the region of £11,500.
We received a grant from the Dept, of Social,
Community & Family Affairs. We also thank
The Lucan Lions Club for their very generous
contribution. As a result, 41 o f our members
were able to receive these alarms at a very
minimal cost. This has been a very big project
and we would like to thank The Lions Club for
their donation.
We are very grateful to the various people who
assist us in different ways throughout the year
by giving donations, helping to run our
outings, etc. We welcome any new members
to join us on Wednesday mornings. Those who
come along really enjoy it. We have lots of
outings organised for the New year. Many
thanks to our drivers and committee who help
out.
I wish the Lions Club every success in their *
future ventures.
THANK YOU
Michael & Patrice Casey wish to thank their

This newly formed choir rehearses once a
month in the Lucan area. The membership is
limited to 12-14 singers. The music in the
choir’s repertoire is a challenging selection
covering a wide range of music both classical
and popular. The choir performs mainly for
corporate entertainments and guest
appearances and will sometimes compete in
competition.
At present the choir has vacancies for one
tenor and one bass. An ability to read music
or experience in choral singing would be an
advantage.

6 th January 1999
Dear Editor,
In the last issue of the Lucan Newsletter dated
20th December 1998, a letter was printed on
the topic o f St. Vincent de Paul to which I
would like to address a reply.
My first and main point is to express my
admiration and gratitude for the SVP
representative referred to in the letter, for her
tireless dedication to serving, on my behalf,
the needy in our community, and for her
courage in speaking to congregations at
Sunday Mass.
May I express, through your pages, my own
view that the unjustified, irrelevant and most
unhelpful remarks made by the anonymous .
writer contributed nothing positive to the
general context of community responsibility at
this special time of sharing.
I would also like to make a point about the
actual publication of the letter. In the ten years
of subscribing to the Lucan Newsletter, I can
remember no other occasion when a criticism
of an address made from a pulpit, from any
church, was published in the community
newsletter. It would be a negative
development if the contributions of lay people
to the Liturgy, such as the occasion in question
and others which took place in St. Mary’s
during Advent, were affected by public
criticism.
Yours etc.,
Dear Editor,
I was shocked and appalled to read the letter
published in Newsletter dated 20th December.
Firstly, if the writer was a regular reader he
would have known the speaker’s proper name.
I wonder is the writer an older man rather than
middle-aged?
So Mr. No-Name. The Editor has your name
and address. Why did you not have your name
printed on your letter? Are you afraid of your
neighbours knowing who you are? Now, are
you not hiding your head in the sand like an
ostrich?
The lady who spoke at all Masses was Mrs.
Keyes, President of the S t Vincent de Paul
Conference and she is a very sensitive and
competent person of the highest standards; a
very experienced speaker for her association.
I am sure she had advice from her fellow
workers, both men and women. It is very hard
to put across to a congregation a speech of this
kind, and offence or upset to anyone is the last
thing on the speaker’s mind. Mrs Keyes’
speech came from the veiy roots of her heart
Not every man is as lucky as you, being able
to work through bad patches, setbacks and
deprivations as you stated. Not all men and
women are as well able to cope. Some of us
women and men need help and support. I feel
you know so little of the wonderful speaker
and lady, Mrs Keyes, whom your letter
criticised. I am a middle-aged lady, almost 60
years. Not like you. I do my best (not try).
My head is never in the sand and I only use
my bed to have a good night’s sleep after
having a good day. And I have very little, but
consider myself very lucky.
Finally, It’s wonderful to see the great support
St. Vincent de Paul got from all the people of
Lucan who attended all Masses, including the
II o’clock Mass.
I am not a V. de P. worker.
Peg Dennehy.
C hristopher K inder..
Dear Editor,
I write to applaud your decision not to c a r r y v ^ r
any political notes in the run up to the local
elections. Recent political notes in the
Newsletter have been notable for their
increased content o f claims by local politicians
relating to the provision of a streetlight here or
filling in a pothole somewhere else. This is
only the start and will increase between now
and June.
Local Councillors should be judged on thenoverall performance while in power for the last
6 or 7 years and not on what they do to
impress voters in the next 6 months.
During their time in power they
enthusiastically supported indiscriminate
rezonings all over the place but failed to put
the same effort into providing the
infrastructure to support the resulting
population explosion or traffic chaos.
Yours sincerely.
(Name & Address with Editor).

Sr. Colette, who taught in St. Joseph’s
College and also was Choir Mistress in St.
Mary’s. She is now in the Presentation
Convent, Greenhills, Drogheda.
And also, Fr. Eoin Cooke. C.C. in St. Mary’s
and, of course, Editor (Extroidinaire) of Luca
Newsletter. Fr. Cooke is now in Ballygall
Parish.
Thank you to all who brought this to our
attention.
Did you see the fireworks on New Year’s
Eve? From where we were, they seemed to bx
quite close to hand, but then night time can tx
deceptive. What was surprising to us was thal
almost as soon as the last rocket exploded in
the sky, the Police Helicopter appeared and
circled with its search light on!
The Emergency Services were very promptl
on the scene on Sunday afternoon when the
plane crashed onto the rough at Lucan Golf
Club. Did you hear the wonderful interview
with Marian Finnucane on Thursday morning
and Mark Hyland, - the ambulance man who
actually cut the three men out of the aircraft?
Mark is a man who obviously loves his job.
He was matter-of-fact, detailed in his
description and most generous towards his
colleagues and also the crew of Leixlip Fire
Brigade who were at the scene too.
Whodunnit? The picture of the Pergola on
the Lucan Traders Calendar, we mean. It is
quite intriguing - but no credit given to the
artist.
First babv of the New Year in the Coombe
Lying-in Hospital this year was bom to Mari
and Philip Hill of Abbeywood Avenue, The
Oaks. Congratulations! The last New Year’s
baby in our records was a girl, 5 lbs. 14oz, be
to Mrs. Bernadette Moran, Ballydowd Grove
at 30 secs, past midnight in 1974. Where is s
now, we wonder?
Congrats to Fr. Alan, who is now Uncle
Alan, we hear. What a lucky baby!
