National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus
Explore naval operations for the North and South through displays of uniforms, artillery, firearms,
personal effects, flags, Civil War ship murals, and a paneled timeline exhibit of the war at sea. See the
ironclad ram CSS Jackson; the blockade runner Virginia; the gunboat CSS Chattahoochee; replicas of the
USS Hartford, USS Monitor, and CSS Albermarle; the fullscale replica of the USS Water Witch; and a battle
simulator theater.
Scheduled during August will be another Cool
History program held inside the cool, air-conditioned
museum and utilizing the interior interpretive spaces to
bring actual events from the war to life with the use of
staff and volunteers. All of the Cool History programs are
living history events which reenact famous or fascinating
incidents in Civil War History.

Scott Antique Market in Atlanta
Scott Antique Market in Atlanta has over 2400 booths overflowing from

Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth
“Georgia’s Official Transportation History Museum” has over 90 pieces of retired railway rolling
stock: trains from the 1920’s and 1950’s including vintage steam and diesel locomotives, passenger and
private cars, WWII troop kitchen, railway post office car,
wooden freight cars, baggage cars, cabooses, and maintenance of way equipment. The museum is home to
MARTA’s historic bus fleet which includes busses from
many of the predecessor systems to MARTA. Train rides
aboard restored cabooses are normally available for $1
per person.
Trains, Trucks, and Tractors will be highlighted on
August 1-2, and visitors will be treated to exhibits,
train rides, refreshments, temporary tattoos, and crafts
for children.
The railway museum is open Thursdays, Fridays, and

Georgia Celebrates Quilts in Marietta
See a glorious display of over 400 quilts at
Georgia Celebrates Quilts in Marietta on September
18-20. The 12th biennial quilt show is produced by the
East Cobb Quilters’ Guild. There will be a colorful
exhibit of quilts of every kind made by hundreds of
talented textile artists throughout Georgia: large quilts
and small ones, contemporary pieces and traditional
quilts, appliquéd and embroidered, hand-quilted and
machined artistry. The colors, the workmanship, and
the beauty of these quilts are amazing. Even the
award ribbons are works of art.
The show will include a Small Treasures Auction of
quilts, a vendor mall, a sewing machine raffle, quilting
demonstrations, and classes offered by several local
shops. A king-sized quilt in the Lori Smith pattern
Sampler Magic will be on display and raffled on
Sunday. The quilt was made by members of the Guild
and pieced together and quilted by Red Hen Fabrics.
The quilt show will be held at the Cobb County
Civic Center, 548 S. Marietta Parkway in Marietta. Show hours will be Friday and Saturday

Perspectives 2009: Georgia Pottery
Invitational in Watkinsville
Perspectives 2009: Georgia Pottery Invitational will be held
August 29-September 16 at the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation
(OCAF) in Watkinsville. This 7th annual exhibition and sale will
feature a wide range of handmade pottery while highlighting 50
contemporary potters from all corners of the State. Georgia’s
finest potters have accepted invitations to participate in this event
offering over 5000 pots. The exhibit and sale will be open daily
from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
The opening reception gala will be August 28 from 6-9 p.m.,
and the preview sale from 7-9 p.m. will offer an extensive selection
with each potter displaying an average of 100 pieces of original
handmade functional pottery. Admission will be $5.
A large exhibit of pottery will feature two works by each of the 50 participating potters as well
as a piece from their private collections. The second exhibit is designed to help the pottery
enthusiast identify various types of pottery with info on how each piece was made, its history
and uses. Pottery Workshops, offered Sept. 5-6, will be taught by Katy McDougal on Saturday

Blue Ridge Mountains Festival of Arts in Hiawassee
Cool off in the mountains this August! The first annual Blue Ridge Mountains Festival of Arts
will be held August 29 & 30 at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds in Hiawassee. Artists from
across the Southeast will be lining the tree shaded walking paths along beautiful Lake Chatuge
The festival will be presented by the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association, which has over 33

explore Pioneer Village and learn how their

Big Haynes Creek Wildlife Festival in Conyers
The 3rd Annual Big Haynes Creek Wildlife Festival will be held August 29-30 at the Georgia
International Horse Park on August 29-30 from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. The outdoor festival will feature
wildlife exhibits, demonstrations, hands-on activities, stage
performances, children’s activities, arts, crafts, a birds of prey
exhibit, reptile show, and more.
Steve Scruggs, the Snake Master, will show poisonous
snakes. Wildlife Wonders, as seen on Discovery Channel, will
give guests a close encounter with different wild animals.
Educator Carol Brown will tell Native American stories. Jason
Clark with Southeast Reptile Rescue will recount adventures
of wildlife removals.

and hunting with hands-on demonstrations. Watch reenactors show how Creek and Cherokee Indians lived off the

Trains, Planes, and Automobiles in Hampton
The City of Hampton will celebrate its historic role in transportation on Saturday, August 29.
The event will be staged in the downtown district of
Hampton which is currently going through a face-lift. The
event will be sponsored by the Downtown Development
Authority, and all proceeds will go towards the improvements of downtown.
Vintage cars, a trackless train, model train displays,
transportation art, train memorabilia, and food vendors will
be in the downtown district. There will be a shuttle bus from
downtown escorting guests to the nearby Tara field airport
to view vintage planes, a military static fly over, and helicopter rides.
Tickets will be available the day of the event at the train depot. They will be $10 for adults and
$5 for children with children under 6 free.

Riverfest 2009 in Canton
The Riverfest Arts and Crafts Festival will be held at
Boling Park in Canton September 26-27. This 25th annual
juried show will feature the work of over 200 artists and craftsmen from around the USA including fine art, paintings,

The 14th annual Apple Pickin’ Jubilee will be held on weekends from September 12-October

Georgia Marble Festival in Jasper
The 29th Annual Georgia Marble Festival will be held October 3-4 in Jasper. The festival will
kick-off Saturday at 10 a.m. with a parade on Main Street. The festival theme, “Marble on My
Mind,” will be featured in the parade, which will be led by Rumble in the Mountains; these motorcycle riders will continue for one hour through picturesque Pickens County and end at a motorcycle expo with live entertainment. The festival will be held at Lee Newton Park Saturday from
10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. There will be juried arts and crafts, fine arts,
children’s area, business expo, entertainment, and a variety of foods. Parking and shuttles will
be free. Festival admission will be $5/adults
and $3/students age 6 and up.
On Saturday, one of the shuttle pick-ups
will be at Lawson Chevrolet, site of the
Georgia Marble Festival Classic Car Show. A
free street dance on Saturday at 7 p.m. in front

There will be tours of the marble mines on
Saturday and Sunday. This is the only time of
the year that the quarry is open for visitors, so join colorful local guides as they explain this rich

Jekyll Island Beach Music Festival
The Jekyll Island Beach Music Festival & BBQ Bash will be held August 21-22. New this year
will be a BBQ contest sanctioned by the Georgia Barbecue Association. An Early Bird Party will
be Thursday, August 20, at the Oceanside Inn & Suites from 7-10 p.m. and will offer food and
entertainment by a top beach music DJ. Admission will be $10 per person.
On Friday night the Swingin’ Medallions will be playing from 8:30-12 p.m. at Atlantic Hall in

Centennial Celebrated in Manchester
In celebration of its 100th anniversary, Manchester will produce a folk play entitled Tales of a
Magic City on August 15-16. Show time will be Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. Tickets
will be $10 per person with no reserved seating.
There will be a cast of approximately 100
people in this play which was compiled from
stories told by local citizens. The play was written
by Debra Jones of Colquitt, one of the writers of
the popular Swamp Gravy plays.
Manchester was founded in August 1909, and
the town’s early strength came from the railroad
and textile mill. Manchester is located 37 miles
from Columbus and 70 miles from Atlanta.
A time capsule will be buried Sunday, August
16, at 2 p.m. at Freedom Park next to the
Manchester Mill. Also, the town will have a street dance on August 29 from 7-10 p.m.

Omega Pepper Festival
The 6th annual Omega Pepper Festival will be held September 11-12 at Ponder Park in
Omega which is located on Hwy. 319S between Tifton and Moultrie.
The Festival will begin on Friday evening,
September 11, with a program of gospel music.
Arts and crafts and food vendors will be open. A
delicious home-cooked dinner will be served, and
tickets for the dinner will be available in advance
as well as that night.
Saturday’s events will include a parade at
10:30 a.m., a pepper recipe contest, arts and
crafts, food, and musical entertainment including
dancers and cloggers. A Kiddie Park will offer a
variety of inflatables as well as other fun activities

Chattahoochee Mountain Fair in Clarkesville
The 34th Annual Chattahoochee Mountain Fair will be held September 11-19 at the Habersham County Fairgrounds at 4235 Old Toccoa Hwy. in Clarkesville. The fair will open weekdays
at 6 p.m., Saturdays at 9 a.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m.
The fair will feature family entertainment including a carnival,

My friend is a rather old-fashioned lady, always quite delicate and elegant, especially in her language.
She and her husband were planning a week’s vacation in Georgia, so she wrote to a particular campground
and asked for a reservation.
She wanted to make sure the campground was fully equipped, but didn’t quite know how to ask about
the toilet facilities. She just couldn’t bring herself to write the word “toilet” in her letter. After much deliberation, she finally came up with the old-fashioned term “bathroom commode.”
But when she wrote that down, she still thought it sounded too forward. So she started all over again,
and rewrote the entire letter, and referred to the bathroom commode merely as the B.C. “Does the campground have its own B.C.?” is what she actually wrote.
Well, the campground owner wasn’t old-fashioned at all; and when he got that letter, he just couldn’t
figure out what the lady was talking about. That B.C. business really stumped him.
After worrying about it for a while, he showed the letter to several campers, but they couldn’t imagine what the lady meant either. So the campground owner, finally coming to the conclusion that the lady
must be asking about the location of the local Baptist Church, sat down and wrote the following reply.
“Dear Madam, I regret very much the delay in answering your letter, but I now take the pleasure of
informing you that a B.C. is located nine miles north of the campground and is capable of seating 250
people at one time. I admit it is quite a distance away if you are in a habit of going regularly, but no doubt
you will be pleased to know that a great number of people take their lunches along and make a day of it.
They usually arrive early and stay late.
“The last time my wife and I went was six years ago, and it was so crowded we had to stand up the
whole time we were there. It may interest you to know that right now, there is a supper planned to raise
money to buy more seats. They’re going to hold it in the basement of the B.C.
“I would like to say it pains me very much not to be able to go more regularly; but it is surely no lack
of desire on my part. As we grow older, it seems to be more of an effort, particularly in cold weather.
“If you do decide to come down to our campground, perhaps I could go with you the first time you
go, sit with you, and introduce you to all the other folks. Remember, this is a friendly community.”
