During an evening celebration of the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, the pope prayed that God would "enlighten the lords of power and money so they would not fall into indifference, but would love the common good, encourage the weak and care for the world in which we live." Pope Francis announced in August that the Catholic Church would join the Orthodox Church in marking the prayer day Sept. 1 each year. In his opening prayer, he asked God to fill people with a desire "to protect every life, to prepare a better future so that your kingdom of justice, people, love and beauty would come." Our Lady of Velankanni CelebraƟon The Novena of Rosaries to Our Lady of Good Health continues this week as follows: September 8th - 11th - 7pm Please join the East Indian Community for the Novena, and for the Special Mass and Celebration on September 12th, beginning with the Vigil Mass at 5pm. Although the pope led the service in St. Peter's Basilica, he asked the preacher of the papal household, Capuchin Father Raniero Cantalamessa, to give the homily. In his homily, the Capuchin, a member of the Franciscan family, referred to both Pope Francis and his namesake, St. (Continued on page 2) New Youth Section Typology—Page 4 2 | The SETON Sunday News | 23rd Sunday CHURCH Report COUNTRY LOCAL CHURCH A group of retired sisters are helping the homeless have a better place to sleep. BELLEVUE—At St. Mary-on-the-Lake some members of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace are transforming plastic shopping bags into sleeping mats that will be given to homeless people. Some of the sisters cut the bags into strips and tie them into “yarn,” while others crochet the plastic yarn into mats. The sisters usually stitch a few rows on a mat during their free time. Joining the retired sisters in making mats are two sisters who are visiting from Vietnam to take classes in the Puget Sound area. In 2008, Deacon Cahoon built the altar Pope Benedict XVI used for his papal Mass at Nationals Park in Washington, and this summer, the carpenter is building an altar Pope Francis will use at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception during his visit to the nation's capital. Some environmentalists, he said, have blamed the Bible and JudeoChristian tradition for the destruction of nature, claiming the idea that human beings have "dominion" over nature gave them permission to use and destroy the earth. But, he said, "the map of pollution" covering the globe coincides less with the places where people believe in God and more in places that underwent "unbridled industrialization aimed only at profit" or are subject to rampant corruption. "No one can seriously serve the cause of safeguarding creation without the courage of pointing a finger at the exaggerated accumulation of wealth in the hands of a few," the Capuchin friar said. St. Francis of Assisi, he said, was able to recognize and contemplate WORLD Holy Year of Mercy and its Indulgence From a document written by Pope Francis about the upcoming Year of Mercy, 12/8/15-11/20/16. “With the approach of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy I would like to focus on several points which I believe require attention to enable the celebration of the Holy Year to be for all believers a true moment of encounter with the mercy of God. It is indeed my wish that the Jubilee be a living experience of the closeness of the Father, whose tenderness is almost tangible, so that the faith of every believer may be strengthened and thus testimony to it be ever more effective. My thought first of all goes to all the faithful who, whether in individual Dioceses or as pilgrims to Rome, will experience the grace (Continued on page 10) (Continued on page 10) Index Calendar of Events Church Report Directory Faith and Life Missionaries of the Holy Spirit Pastor’s Message Spanish / Sección en Español St Elizabeth Ann Seton Today’s Psalm Vocational Awareness Youth, Typology 5 2 10/11 3 6 3 8/9 7 3 6/7 4 How to reach us: Phone: (425) 481-0303 Fax: (425) 485-8510 2316 180th St S.E., Bothell, WA 98012 P.O.Box 12429, Mill Creek, WA 98082 Web Site: www.easbothell.org Facebook web link: http://www.facebook.com/eas.bothell Email: [email protected] Administrative Staff Roberto Saldivar, M.Sp.S., Pastor Mario Rodriguez, M.Sp.S., Vicar Jorge Gomez del Valle, M.Sp.S., Vicar (retired) Santos Mendoza, M.Sp.S., Brother Craig Lundberg, Deacon Shannon Everist, Pastoral Asst. for Administration Lori Lowery, Secretary Officers and Councils The Seton Sunday News Bulletin Fr. PASTOR’S MESSAGE Last month I had the opportunity to celebrate baptisms, towards the end of the celebration there is a beautiful prayer called “Ephphatha or Prayer over Ears and Mouth,” that is prayed by touching the ears and mouth of the child with the thumb. If there are several children I usually invite one of the child’s parents to help me (in the United States this is allowed, at the discretion of the minister). The prayer is: “The Lord Jesus made the deaf hear and the dumb speak. May he soon touch your ears to receive his word, and your mouth to proclaim his faith, to the praise and glory of God the Father. Amen.” A deaf and mute person with no name was presented to Jesus and begged Him to lay His hand on him. He didn’t want his life to to continue being incommunicable. But…, are there any other ways our experiences may be incommunicable besides being deaf and mute? Wouldn’t the loneliness of not wanting to listen to anyone be the worst? Wouldn’t the solitude of not wanting to talk to anyone be the worst? In Gabriel Marcel’s Ethics of Hope we read: TODAY’S PSALM Psalm 146 (v. 6-7, 8-9, 9-10 ) R. Praise the Lord, my soul! The God of Jacob keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free. The LORD gives sight to the blind; the LORD raises up those who were bowed down. The LORD loves the just; the LORD protects strangers. The fatherless and the widow the LORD sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts. The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia. Today we hear Psalm 146, for its response we sing: “Praise the Lord, my soul!” or “Alleluia”. I did not check with our choirs which response they will be doing but both responses proclaim God’s reign. But let us compassionate towards the deaf and mute person. He was taken to Jesus for a miracle. This passage of the Gospel, besides having a baptismal connotation, has a profound human undertone: the experience of darkness. “There is only one grief, to be alone. For those who feel alone, loneliness becomes a condemnation to suffer, and to suffer as an isolated being. The only presence that a truly lonely person feels is her own, largely because she believes that her experiences as an individual are incommunicable. If she cannot communicate who she is or the things she struggles with to other, then she certainly cannot feel the presence of other in her life.” (Marcel’s Ethics of Hope: Evil, God and Virtue by Jill Graper Hernandez, pg. 90) Loneliness might not be the only suffering, but it is one of the deepest, it touches the heart and wounds us the most. God created us with two ears and lips to communicate with each other. We listen with our ears and we enter conversations with our lips. In today’s Gospel someone question ourselves: Do we really want to respond with joy? If we do, it’s because we are free to hear and free to see. If so, then we know what God wants: justice for the oppressed, food for the hungry… safety for God’s people no matter who they are. We must then be open to change! As we heard this Sunday in the first reading from the Prophet Isaiah: “Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then the tongue of the mute will sing.” Already in the first reading the Lord speaks of what He will do: all in need are given what they need, so there is nothing to fear. The second reading from James invites us to show no partiality as we adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. In conclusion, our soul praises the Lord because His feelings are also ours and His desires are our commands. Amen. was Through baptism we receive the gift and the ability to relate with God, to listen to His Word and to communicate with Him in prayer. But baptismal deafness and dumbness can create loneliness in the heart leading you to darkness and rendering you unable to communicate with God. One of the most common phrases in the Scriptures is “Hear oh, Israel.” Furthermore, Deuteronomy says: “Anyone who will not listen to my words…, I myself will hold accountable for it” (Deut. 18:19). Accountable for not being in communication. This loneliness distances you from God, placing you in a dark room with no windows to “Look Up.” Christianity is about the Word becoming Flesh, being able to listen to the Word and to relate to the Word. It is about listening to God inside the heart, making us feel alive for others. FAITH AND LIFE further embark in formation for all our ministers to make ourselves aware of our service and the important role we have in the community. Jesus’ ministry is about physical healing too. How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered? Why do you have to “put your two cents in,” but it’s only “a penny for your thoughts”? Once you’re in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity? Why does a round pizza come in a square box? What disease did cured ham actually have? How is it that we put men on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage? Why is it that people say they “slept like a baby” when babies wake up like every two hours? Why are you in a movie, but you’re on TV? Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground? Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat? If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a stupid song about him? Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are going dead? If the Professor on Gilligan’s Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can’t he fix a hole in a boat? Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? They’re both dogs! If Wile E. Coyote had enough money to buy all that ACME stuff, why didn’t he just buy dinner? If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons? Do the “Alphabet” song and “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” have the same tune? Why did you just try singing the two songs above? Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog’s face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the window? Felix de Jesus Rougier. Longing for God—Our vocation "At the heart of this ocean of vanities and festivals, I felt within my soul a burning desire to learn how to pray. I inquired, I read, I kept myself as much as I could in God's presence. This was enough to begin seeing a great light shed on the nothingness of worldly things on the vanity of existence, on the beauty of God. I felt a great love for the Holy Spirit. When I went to bed I held my crucifix and, not knowing what was happening to me, felt a profound interior emotion. My heart fixed itself on Christ in an inexplicable way. Christ drew me to Himself, absorbed me, enchanted me. Soon all dissolved in tears. Then this experience passed and I returned to my life of tepidity, of vanity and of folly. This caused me much suffering. Even in the midst adulation, recreation, and festivals I felt emptiness in my soul, and seemed to hear a voice saying: 'You were not born for this, your happiness is somewhere else.' "When I recall these things, it seems to me I should have had a religious vocation but I never, so to say, had heard of such words and never paid close attention to it. On reading the Christian Annals I was quite enthused over the religious mentioned, but I never knew any of them and thought they were no longer alive. Many a time I and my cousins played at being nuns. For a long time I would kneel down, feeling in my soul God's delight. Soon, however, my cousins lost interest with this game and played with their boy friends. "Vocation, Virginity! I had no idea what these words meant. I thought I was destined to marry without any other question than to do so, although I had no concept of its divine grandeur and its obligations. My confessors spoke to me of no other way of life. My uncle, who was a priest, was the only one who used to read to me beautiful passages about virgins and martyrs, but it never crossed my mind, that could be for me. Conchita’s Diary, Philippon, OP Fr. Felix’ Vocation within a Vocation Fr. Felix met Conchita in 1903. He had been a Marist priest for 16 years. At the time of the providential encounter, he was praying a Novena to the Holy Spirit to find a better spiritual direction to his life. He became Conchita’s spiritual director soon after meeting her, as the time passed, Father Félix became more and more certain that all of this was the work of God: the revelations to Mrs. Cabrera, his providential meeting with her, the Works of the Cross, and his vocation to be the Founder of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. This certainly, which came to be immovable, had a variety of sources: the principal one was the interior light which God communicated to him; but besides that, there was the sanctity of life which he had been able to verify in Conchita, and the notable progress of his own spiritual life since that meeting with Mrs. Cabrera and with the Works of the Cross. On the other hand, Father Félix, with great humility and prudence had consulted about this with several bishops and priests and all of them gave him their enthusiastic approval. From Risking the Future, Fr. Zimbron A WAITING Reflection… ”Vocation is a very big undertaking, and it is for a lifetime. Therefore, to throw yourself into it, you must have seriously thought about yourself and the lifestyle you intend to embrace. Analyze your capabilities and limitations. Think about whether you will be able to live the demands that your vocation implies counting, of course, on the grace of the Holy Spirit. What is your belief that God is calling you based upon? What are the pros and cons of your taking up this path? What circumstances or individuals may help or hinder your response? What attracts you towards this kind of life and what do you dislike? God asks you to commit yourself responsibly in the discernment of your vocation. He wants you to use your spiritual sensitivity and your intelligence to seek His will. Inspired by the Holy Spirit’s light, you will be able to understand what God the Father wants from you. Don’t think of receiving the absolute certainty of what God wants from you, something like having a contract signed by Him. What you will find will be signs through which God will reveal to you the project He has in mind for you. By interpreting these signs, you will be certain of His call. By taking this step, you may say, “Jesus Christ calls me to follow him. With the power of the Holy Spirit, I can answer.” Fr. Fernando Torre, M.Sp.S. Imitating Christ’s heart to purify our own St. Elizabeth had much love and respect for students of her who wanted to strive for purity of heart. She often counseled and instructed them that the best way to work tirelessly to maintain purity of heart was by imitating Christ’s Heart. Making a Diligent Discernment I would define diligent discernment as a process of prayer and careful study that takes place over an appropriate period of time. It requires accurate information about priesthood, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, a good spiritual director, and the vocation director. This process includes: a daily sustained spiritual plan of life which includes at least thirty minutes of private prayer. Living a consistent Christian life and going to Confession regularly. Seeing a wise, holy spiritual director at least once monthly, and being open and honest with him about everything. Attending regular discernment groups, holy hours, and vocation retreats. Serving others generously on a regular, continuous basis. Selections from “To save a thousand souls” by Fr. Brett A. Brannen For information on becoming a Religious Priest Missionary of the Holy Spirit or a Diocesan Priest contact one of the following people: Serra Club: Arthur Adams Youth Minister: Stephen Kramp Priest: Fr. Roberto Saldivar, M.Sp.S To imitate Jesus Christ, Elizabeth led individuals to live the virtues of Jesus Christ, which were “meekness, humility, patience, resignation, and gratitude.” In a letter to Rev. Simon Gabriel Bruté (her spiritual director for many years), she wrote: “God-God-God-that the Supreme delight should be God and to open the mouth and heart wide that He may fill it – but to be patient, gentle, humble- how little of that through my torrents of daily tears and affections.” She experienced how difficult it was to maintain purity of heart. Elizabeth tirelessly encouraged the Christ-centered life to individuals. She urged them to imitate Jesus, to suffer for him, and to serve him through their ministries and love of neighbor. To live in the Christ-centered life, she guided them to contemplate him and possess His love in their hearts. She reminded that to live the Christ-centered life was to serve him in their service to others, especially the poor. Me atraía, me absorbía, me anonadaba y luego acababa llorando. ¿Eres apurón/ a? You can help children know they are understood As parents, educators and volunteers, we want children to know that we are not only authority figures in their lives, but also people they can trust. To foster authentic trust with children, it is important that they know that you understand them. One of the simplest ways to do this is by repeating back what children are telling you. When you do this, you are affirming to the child that they are heard and understood. Usted puede ayudar a que los niños se sientan comprendidos Como padres, educadores y voluntarios, queremos que los niños sepan que no somos sólo figuras de autoridad en su vida, sino también que somos personas de confianza. Para fomentar esta verdadera confianza, es importante que los niños se sientan comprendidos. Una de las formas más sencillas de hacer esto es repetir lo que están diciendo. "Possession excludes, contemplation includes. Possession divides, contemplation multiplies," he said. If one person owns a lake or park, "all the others are excluded," but if no one owns it, thousands can enjoy it without taking it away from anyone. Father Cantalamessa said that while the world St. Francis lived in was not facing the environmental emergency people today are facing, he still knew that if he took more than he needed, he was stealing from others. "We must ask: Am I a resources thief, using more than my due and therefore taking it from those who will come after me?" the preacher said. Pointing to Pope Francis' encyclical on the environment, "Laudato Si'," the Capuchin said safeguarding creation is an "artisanal" activity, one that must begin with individuals and their daily actions. "What sense is there, for example, in being worried about the pollution of the atmosphere, the oceans and the forests, if I don't hesitate before throwing a plastic bag on the shore?" he asked. HOME VISITATION/PEER COUNSELING MINISTRY I’m very happy to report that we have nine volunteers from our parish who are trained to do home visits for those going through difficult transitions in their lives. This ministry is available for your family member who may frequently be alone and lonely. Our weekly hour with your loved one may also afford you a break from caregiving. Transitions for the elderly such as not being able to drive, having to deal with disabilities or illness, or losing a loved family member cause intense grief. We can be there to assist them by listening, acknowledging their feelings, and showing that we care. We will offer a supportive presence and not try to ‘fix’ the situation. Our visits let them know that St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish cares about them and prays for them. Please call on us so that we can do what Pope Francis asks of us - -becoming involved, supportive, and bearing fruit as parishioners. One of the sisters working on the mats can only use one hand because of a recent stroke. QFC donated 1,000 bags for the sisters’ efforts. The completed mats will help folks who don’t have a clean place to sleep. Because they’re made from plastic, homeless people can keep dry when they’re sleeping outside. The lightweight mats offer some insulation, are bug-proof and are easy to wash off. The work of making the mats is slow, but it’s a way for these sisters to continue helping others. “I think God always sends you something to do no matter what,” one of the retired sisters said. Women’s Fellowship will begin on Tuesday September 15th in the Fellowship Hall at 10:00 am. All women welcome and babysitting will be available!
