Each year, we reach out to thousands of individuals and more than 2,000 charitable organizations in an effort to improve the quality of life in our local communities, around the great state of Michigan, in northwest Ohio and across the border in Canada. Through the Detroit Tigers Foundation and community affairs initiatives, the organization has donated baseball equipment, financial resources and special experiences to positively impact more than 150,000 children each year. The Foundation is at the forefront of revitalizing youth baseball in our community, and in turn teaching our young people leadership skills, sportsmanship and confidence. In addition to our focus on baseball, we place equal emphasis on providing educational opportunities for young people. The Detroit Tigers offer scholarships and educational programs designed to motivate and inspire our youth through the arts and reading. Comerica Park has played an important role in the revitalization of downtown Detroit. Since the ballpark opened in 2000, the Tigers have donated more than $10 million dollars worth of tickets to provide almost 500,000 underprivileged youths with an opportunity to experience a Tigers game. Many of those young people were being given that opportunity for the first time in their lives. A great source of pride is the personal commitment of our players and coaches, their wives, and our front office staff in supporting all of our community initiatives. We believe in Detroit and are committed to making a positive difference in our city. The following pages will provide an overview of our efforts and hopefully motivate others to become involved. Sincerely, David Dombrowski President, CEO and General Manager Youth Baseball The Tigers are dedicated to reviving baseball in our community with programs that bring baseball back to life. Gloves for Kids The love of baseball runs deep in the veins of Detroit. However, as financial hardships cause a shortage of equipment and time weathers our baseball fields, youth baseball suffers. Together with CBS Radio partners, the Tigers call upon our community to collect gentlyused equipment and refurbish the fields where the magical moments of baseball take place. The Gloves for Kids program gave 400 kids at six inner-city baseball programs a chance to play ball by providing gloves, cleats, bats and balls. Tigers players show off the impressive 1,000 pieces of equipment collected through Gloves for Kids. Funds and equipment are awarded to local softball and baseball programs. A Little League Tradition is Saved When the annual Hometown World Series little league baseball game was at risk of being cancelled due to a lack of funding, Ilitch Charities and the Detroit Tigers went to bat to save this cherished event by donating nearly $30,000 to non-profit organization Think Detroit PAL. The Hometown World Series game will now go on for years to come. Tigers honor the Hometown World Series Champions – the best youth teams in Detroit – before a Tigers game at Comerica Park. Youth Baseball 03 A Renewed Love of Baseball in the Inner Cities Teams from more than 200 cities compete for a spot in the annual Reviving Baseball in the Inner (RBI) Cities World Series. Thanks in part to support from the Detroit Tigers, the Detroit Junior Boys RBI team has brought home two championships in recent years. The young athletes are featured in a special pre-game ceremony at Comerica Park and enjoy the game from a luxury suite. Children Learn Willie Horton’s Passion – Baseball! Tigers legend Willie Horton never forgets his hometown of Detroit and the children in need in our community. Together with Horton, the Detroit Tigers, the Youth Development Commission and Don Bosco Hall open the gates of Comerica Park annually to nearly 400 underprivileged children for Willie Horton’s Batting for Kids day. Baseball Skills for Life Children sharpen their baseball skills through competitions and instructional clinics. A few lucky kids even get to share the field with Horton during the event. 04 Youth Baseball Pitching, hitting and running are the core skills in baseball. Major League Baseball and the Tigers help local youth develop these essential skills during the Pepsi Pitch, Hit & Run competition at Comerica Park. The finalists are honored during a pre-game ceremony and are hosted for an exciting evening of Tigers Baseball. Photo: Detroit Free Press Education Kids are our future, and nothing is more important than a solid education. The Tigers reach out to bring special educational programs to schools, recognize good students and even send a few deserving high school scholars on to college. An Opportunity of a Lifetime A college scholarship can be an opportunity of a lifetime. Two deserving students receive a scholarship each year to the college or university of their choice. Alonzo King receives the Willie Horton Scholarship from Willie Horton, Detroit Tigers Foundation Manager Jordan Field, Northwestern High School Principal Patricia Pickett and Robin Ferriby of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan. Willie Horton Scholarship In honor of hometown hero and Northwestern High School graduate Willie Horton, the Tigers award an annual scholarship in his name to a graduating senior from Northwestern High School. The Willie Horton Scholarship, administered by the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan, is awarded to a strong academic achiever, leader and volunteer. Ordoñez Family Scholarship Created by Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordoñez and his wife Dagly, the Ordoñez Family Scholarship awards an annual scholarship to a student from Southwest Detroit. Established in 2008, the Ordoñez Family Scholarship is awarded to a student who shows strong community leadership and academic achievement. A New Excitement for Reading When a Detroit Tigers player visits a school to read to kids, excitement about reading skyrockets. Through the Detroit Free Press’ state-wide literacy program Newspapers in Education, 100,000 students receive free reading materials about baseball and other important life lessons. Tigers players and front office staff visit schools to read stories and inspire the kids. A Special Day for Kids Who Keep Schools Safe Tigers pitcher Nate Robertson shares his love of reading with students at St. Patrick Elementary School in White Lake, Michigan. 06 Education Thousands of local children help keep their schools safe by serving as safety patrol members. The Detroit Tigers thank them for their service at Safety Patrol Day – a 50 year tradition. Nearly 6,000 safety patrol and service squad members attend a game courtesy of the Detroit Tigers. Kids Use Creativity to Honor Jackie Robinson Jackie Robinson’s debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 ended 80 years of baseball segregation. Each year, the Tigers invite local children to participate in the Jackie Robinson Art, Essay and Poetry contest to keep Jackie’s memory alive. By expressing themselves through these creative avenues, students better understand Jackie’s spirit and his tremendous impact on our society. The winning children appear at a special pre-game ceremony, and then enjoy the game with their family and teacher. Tigers outfielder Curtis Granderson visits with contest winners. Asukile Gardner, Renaissance High School A “Great” Day to Keep Kids Violence Free Leah Spivey, Bates Academy Learning to avoid using violence to solve problems is imperative for children. The Tigers donate more than 1,500 tickets to area students who graduate from the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Program, a school curriculum aimed at keeping kids away from gangs and violence. Students are treated with a special visit from Tigers Manager Jim Leyland and officers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Education 07 Photo: Detroit Free Press Community The Tigers thank the 3 million fans within our community, and our players and staff strive to give back to the community that supports them. For a few special days during the cold Michigan January, you won’t find the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. The team, along with coaches, broadcasters and front office staff hit the road for the Winter Caravan to visit fans and raise funds for charitable causes. Players can be found reading to elementary school children, bowling to raise funds, visiting kids in the hospital and attending public events in the community. Each year the Tigers visit sixteen to twenty cities, touching the lives of over 10,000 to 13,000 fans while raising money along the way. Photo: The Detroit News A Brighter January Day, Thanks to the Tigers Tigers outfielder Curtis Granderson makes a grand entrance at the Oakland University rally through a tunnel of energetic Oakland University cheerleaders. Tigers Prowl the Streets to Raise Funds for Kids Detroit became “TigerTown” over the summer when nearly 100, four-foot tall tiger sculptures were displayed along the streets of metro Detroit. Local artists decorated the sculptures for the TigerTown fundraiser, hosted by the Detroit Tigers Foundation and the Children’s Charities Coalition. The tigers were then auctioned, raising more than $300,000. Tigers President, CEO and General Manger David Dombrowski, his wife Karie Ross as well as players and their wives served as volunteers and honorary co-chairs. TIGERTOWN BENEFICIARIES Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordoñez is greeted by young Tigers fans while visiting Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Southwest Detroit. A special fan at Children’s Hospital of Michigan gets a baseball signed by Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander and infield coach Rafael Belliard. • Detroit Tigers Foundation • Children’s Charities Coalition, comprised of: Child Abuse and Neglect Council of Oakland County The Community House Orchards Children’s Services Variety The Children’s Charity Community 09 The Spirit of Volunteerism The spirit of volunteering runs deep through the Tigers organization – a spirit that players want to instill in the youth of our community. Outfielder Curtis Granderson and pitcher Nate Robertson are spokesmen for the Action Team program, which encourages youth to volunteer. The players speak to the students about the importance of serving their community and later honor them during a pre-game ceremony at Comerica Park. Foster Children Cheer on their Home Team Three hundred young fans from the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) attended a Tigers game, compliments of catcher Vance Wilson’s family charity, the Wilsons3 Foundation. Vance, Bridget and Peyton Wilson award the CWLA $2,500 from the Wilsons3 Foundation. Healthy Habits Start Early With childhood obesity sacrificing the quality of life for more and more children, Detroit Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand and his staff invite more than 100 local children to Comerica Park to learn about healthy habits for a day. Through this league-wide program known as Promoting a Lifetime of Activity for Youth (PLAY), children challenge themselves during on-field clinics and learn important techniques to get in shape and stay healthy. The kids are inspired by a special appearance by outfielder Curtis Granderson, who shares his personal tips for staying healthy. 10 Community Tigers Spread Holiday Cheer The holidays are a special time for the Detroit Tigers family, and they enjoy sharing their holiday cheer with others. Each year, the Tigers treat a group of underprivileged children to a holiday feast and special evening of gifts and surprises. Words of encouragement from a Tigers player and a visit from PAWS make a memorable holiday for the children. A Tigers Game for Every Child Every child should experience the excitement of a Detroit Tigers baseball game. That’s why the Detroit Tigers donate nearly 70,000 tickets annually to less fortunate children in our community through the Detroit Tigers Foundation and the Major League Baseball Commissioner’s Initiative for Kids Ticket Donation Programs. Among the 600 organizations that received $1.2 million worth of donated tickets: • Boys and Girls Club • Children’s Hospital of Michigan • City of Detroit Head Start Program • Coalition on Temporary Shelter • Southwest Detroit Little League • Special Olympics • Think Detroit PAL • Youth Development Commission Spending Christmas with Dontrelle Willis Through the generosity of Tigers pitcher Dontrelle Willis, over 65 foster boys were treated to bags and bags of Christmas gifts. Dontrelle visited with all of the boys while they opened gifts of all kinds. Community 11 Special Fans with Special Dreams For fans facing life-threatening illnesses, their wish may be to meet a Detroit Tigers coach, get a special visit in the hospital from a player, watch batting practice from the field or hang out with PAWS. For a day, the Tigers make these dreams a reality through the Dreams Come True program. The fans’ special time with the team just might be the inspiration to keep fighting. The Tigers make dreams come true for individuals who contact us with special wish requests and through the following organizations: • Make-A-Wish Foundation • Leukemia and Lymphoma Society • Rosemary A. Hockney Memorial Foundation • Children’s Hospital of Michigan “For one moment my dad got to forget about being sick and enjoyed a dream that few get to share. The moment I got to share with my dad was a memory that will always be with us.” Brent L. Beard SON OF RONALD BEARD “Even with a rained-out game, the outing was a true success! In fact, when we jokingly asked 5-year old Caleb who won, he shouted, “Tigers!” Obviously, he had so much fun being treated so special that he didn't realize the game was canceled!” Molly Melamed FOUNDER/EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CAMP CASEY “Christine was so thrilled to be permitted to go on the field, meet players, receive very special and personal items, and enjoy a game. It was a special evening that lifted her spirits and will help her cope with the realities of the cancer she is fighting day-to-day.” Mike & Connie Wall PARENTS OF CHRISTINE WALL Tigers second baseman Placido Polanco and wife Lily play board games with a special patient at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. They leave behind a bag with Tigers memorabilia. Tigers pitchers, Zach Miner and Todd Jones (accompanied by wife Michelle) brighten a patient’s day at Children’s Hospital. Special Fans with Special Dreams 13 Our Nation’s Heroes The Tigers are thankful for our fans serving our country and salute them for the sacrifices they make for our freedom. A New Friend at Selfridge Air National Guard Base Tigers pitcher Jeremy Bonderman and his family purchased a military themed Tiger named “Sarge,” from the TigerTown fundraiser and donated it to Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township, Michigan. Bonderman personally delivered Sarge to the base, and spent some quality time with members of our military. Salute to Our Troops The Detroit Tigers salute the U.S. military during an emotional tribute game on Independence Day. One of our country’s military heroes throws out the ceremonial first pitch, and a joint-military choir from Selfridge Air National Guard Base leaves the crowd in awe with a rendition of the National Anthem. The seventh inning stretch is brightened by another patriotic tune. A surprise fly-over by F-16 jets from Selfridge also leaves fans reminded of the great sacrifices U.S. troops make to defend our freedom. Our Nation’s Heroes 15 Tigers Favorites Raise Foundation Funds Who knows the Detroit Tigers players better than anyone? Their wives. The Tiger Wives put this special skill to work to raise money for the Detroit Tigers Foundation. They personally pack baskets with their husbands’ favorite things – from magazines and movies, to baseball memorabilia and gift cards to their favorite place to eat. The baskets are auctioned online through the My Favorite Things Charity Auction, raising nearly $4,000. Tigers Wives The Tigers Wives aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and make a real difference in our community. A Day when Kids with Cancer are Just Kids New Blue Jeans Take Away the Back to School Blues For one special day, kids with cancer can just be kids. More than 80 children and their families enjoy ballpark food, ride the Ferris wheel, get their faces painted, play with mascot PAWS and watch a Detroit Tigers game at Comerica Park. The Boots n’ Baseball Party, hosted in partnership with the American Cancer Society, features some special visiting time and words of encouragement from the Tigers Wives, and even a surprise appearance by a few Tigers players. We take it for granted that every child has jeans to wear when school is back in session, but unfortunately some kids need our help. Lily Polanco, wife of second baseman Placido Polanco, takes the lead on a campaign to collect jeans and school supplies with the Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan through the Operation School Bell program. The Detroit Tigers, colleagues at the Ilitch-owned companies, Gardner-White, Fox 2 and Tigers fans collect enough jeans and school supplies to send 1,000 local children back to school with smiles on their faces. A Team Racing for a Cure A six year tradition, the Tigers Wives walk in the Annual Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure,® locally presented by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. The walk starts at Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers, with 30,000 walkers. After the walk, the Tigers Wives honor the team with the most new participants with complimentary Tigers tickets. A Scoop of Ice Cream Goes a Long Way Creating a skilled workforce is essential for the prosperity of Detroit. The Tigers wives raise money to train workers by scooping ice cream for an evening at the Ben & Jerry’s Partnershop located near Comerica Park. The shop operates in partnership with nonprofit organization Goodwill Industries, which trains and provides employment opportunities for young people who face barriers to employment. Tigers Wives 17 History and Culture The many cultures of Detroit Tigers players and staff help make them one of the greatest teams in baseball. The team invites fans, friends and neighbors to celebrate these cultures. Permanent Fixture Celebrates Legacy of Norman “Turkey” Stearnes During an emotional ceremony, a permanent plaque was dedicated to Detroit Stars player Norman “Turkey” Stearnes. A Negro Leagues leader in nearly every batting category, Stearnes was the first Detroit Stars player ever enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Everyone attending the ceremony, including more than 200 schoolchildren, learned about the significant role Stearnes and his fellow Negro League teammates played in the development of our national pastime. (Opposite) Tigers owner Michael Ilitch, Wendy Lewis of Major League Baseball, members of the Stearnes family and Tigers President, CEO, and General Manger David Dombrowski enjoy the plaque moments after it was unveiled. ¡Fiesta Tigres! The Tigers celebrate the collective achievements of Latin and Hispanic players each year with ¡Fiesta Tigres! at Comerica Park. Fans of all backgrounds enjoy special cultural activities, including live Latin music, salsa dancing and Hall of Fame exhibits celebrating Latin and Hispanic players. Several Tigers players team up to purchase more than 200 tickets for underprivileged children and families from the Hispanic community. Fans cheer for their favorite Latin and Hispanic players during a special pre-game ceremony. Tigers pitcher Joel Zumaya and wife, Rachel celebrate ¡Fiesta Tigres! with young baseball players from southwest Detroit. Tigers Pay Tribute to Detroit’s “Stars” The annual Negro Leagues Weekend at Comerica Park pays homage to the talented players of Negro League Baseball. Tigers players proudly wear the uniforms of the Detroit Stars team during a tribute game. Players including Marcus Thames, Curtis Granderson, and Gary Sheffield invite inner-city youth baseball players to join in the celebration by purchasing more than 130 tickets to the tribute game for these deserving athletes. Fans also take center stage in the celebration during the “Detroit Stars” singing contest. More than 300 contestants are narrowed down to two finalists who perform at Comerica Park following the tribute game. Fans crown the best singer the “Detroit Star.” (Right) Tigers players Marcus Thames and Curtis Granderson wear Detroit Stars uniforms, last worn in 1960 when the team ceased operations. History and Culture 19 Detroit Tigers Foundation Enhancing lives through the game of baseball. The Detroit Tigers organization supports our community in so many valuable ways. To further this goal, the Tigers formed the Detroit Tigers Foundation in 2005 to impact even more deserving members of our community with a focus on youth, education and recreation. The Foundation aims to enhance lives through the game of baseball. In its first full year of giving, the Foundation awarded more than $185,000 in grants and mini-grants while investing $215,000 in scholarship endowments, totaling over $400,000 in cash giving.
