Lewis, a health sciences major, told WWJ’s Stephanie Davis he’s been inspired by the lives of late civil rights activist, Martin Luther King, Jr., and NBA legend Michael Jordan. Why those two? “Martin Luther King because he showed relentless leadership and fearlessness going forward, and he wasn’t scared to take on any challenge,” Lewis said. “And Michael Jordan showed me that’s not a bad thing to fail, as long as you learn from it.” Johnson, a pre-social work major, has a love for a world-renowned poet, novelist, playwright, and social activist. “One of the most influential people to me would be Langston Hughes,” Johnson said. “I’ve always 2 of 4 3/5/14 4:23 PM Black History: 2 Exemplary Young Leaders « CBS Detroit http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2014/02/21/black-history-2-exempla... been a huge fan of his work in the Harlem Renaissance and the impact that he left.” “He really worked and strived to (focus on) the struggles that African Americans faces back in those days and bring them to light through his work,” she said. Johnson, who has yet to pick a specific career, hopes to work to help abused woman, teens and children. Lewis plans to one day be a physical therapist.
