Pro-LTTE lobby in UK planning protests
against President’s visit
By Sujeeva Nivunhella in London
(island.lk) The pro-LTTE lobby in the United
Kingdom is planning to stage protests when
President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrives in London
to participate in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
celebrations.
Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate 60 years on the
throne on June 5. A large contingent of foreign
dignitaries has been invited to attend the colorful.
Amongst the special invitees are President
Rajapaksa and his wife.
Reports spoke of pro-LTTE Tamils sending emails
to Buckingham Palace protesting against the
invitation extended to the Sri Lankan leader.
At the debate on Sri Lanka organized by the
ISSUE 1069
Frontline Club in London where Member of
Parliament Rajiva Wijesinha and politician Arun
Thambimuttu attended recently, a member of the
audience — a man of Sri Lankan origin — openly
protested against sending an invitation to the
President.
The President had to cancel a talk he was
scheduled to give at the Oxford University in
December 2010 due to protests by pro-LTTE
groups.
Sajin Vass Gunawardena, MP visited London a
few weeks ago to check on arrangements for the
President’s proposed visit. It is understood that
he was given an assurance by the British
authorities about the President’s safety.
(adaderana.lk) Human Rights Watch (HRW) has
called upon the UK government to suspend
deportation of Sri Lanka Tamil asylum seekers
claiming that some returnees have been subjected
to arbitrary arrest and torture upon their return to Sri
Lanka.
“The United Kingdom should immediately suspend
deportations of ethnic Tamil asylum seekers to Sri
Lanka and review its policies in assessing these
claims,” the HRW release said.

A Bureau official said the magnitude of the tremor
could not be measured accurately as it was minor
and was felt only in two centres. He said it
measured around 2.0 on the Richter Scale.
“If the tremor had been felt in three or more

given,” he added. The official said the tremor had
not been felt in any other neighbouring country and
added it was difficult to ascertain whether it was
generated from within the country or off shore. A

move forward in a very simple manner.
In an interview with Daily Mirror online, about the
ordeal her family had gone through during the past
two and a half years she said “His main goal is to
provide freedom and bring successes to the
country. I don’t think he cares about power or
position. He will find his own way to do it.
Everyone knows that he once said he would never
let another Army Commander have to fight a war
and he kept to his word. He has proven that he
keeps to his word one hundred percent of the time,
and I am sure that this time too he will keep to his
word.” (DS)

The main suspect who had organized the voyage is
said to have netted a total of around 30 million from
the people. The Police have also taken seven
Dolphin vans and a lorry suspected to have been
used to transport the people towards boarding point
into custody.

The Minor Complaints Branch of the Kandy police,
after conducting preliminary inquiries, produced the

Lost-and-found boy reunites with his mother after a year
SPECIAL OFFER
(sundaytimes.lk) The ordeal of a teenager who went
missing in Jaffna last year By Chris Kamalendran
A 13 year old boy who was grabbed on his way to
school in Jaffna last year and first forced to work as
a domestic aide to a wealthy businessman in
Kattankudi and then brought back to work at a
textile shop in Jaffna, was reunited with his mother .
Paramanathan Rajeeram, from Manipay, 16
kilometres off Jaffna town was abducted reportedly
by a scrap iron collector on June 8, last year. Since
then, his 50-year-old mother, Vadani Wathsala, 50
who had lost her husband four years before had not
given up the search for
her lost son and had

mother said.
“Within a few minutes the police brought the boy to
me and it was my son. I wanted to take him back
home immediately but the police said some legal
procedure had to be followed”. Police arrested three
people from the sales outlet and produced them
along with the boy before the Mallakam Magistrate
K.Jeewarani. Police investigations have revealed
that last year when the boy was on his way to
school a cyclist had approached him and said he
could get a lift to school in a van. After the boy had
got into the van he had been taken to lodging in
Jaffna town and given a change of clothing. That
same night he had been taken to Kattankudi and
handed over to a businessman in the area.
He had been named Anver after being converted to
Islam following a religious ceremony. He had
worked for a family of five that included three
school-going girls. His chores included taking them
to school and watering the plants among other
duties. From Kattankudi the boy had been brought
back to Jaffna where he was handed over to
another person who ran a textile shop. When the
boy was reunited with his mother he was not aware
that he was back in Jaffna but thought he was still
in Kattankudi.
The Jaffna Human Rights Commission, the Child
Care and Probation office and the Police are
carrying out their own investigations into the matter.
Together at last: Mother and son at the
Jaffna Hospital on Friday
The shopkeeper of the textile shop was remanded
until Tuesday while the main suspect, the
businessman from Kattankudi is evading arrest.
Meanwhile, the boy who had been admitted to the
Jaffna hospital to obtain a JMO’s report had been
chained to the bed at nights by prison officials,
drawing strong objections from Human Rights and
probation officials.
The prison officials had claimed that this was done
to prevent the boy being ‘abducted’ once more.

Fear of Jupiter prompts poojas
(sundaytimes.lk) Hundreds of people are queuing
up at kovils and temples in various parts of the
country for poojas and offerings to overcome what
they believe to be the ill-effects of the Jupiter
planetary change.
The planetary change began on May 17 and may
last one year, prompting people to seek divine
blessings to ward off the Jupiter malefic. Our
Kataragama correspondent K.D. Devapriya said
large numbers including politicians and
businessmen were turning up for poojas in view of
the planetary change.
Similar crowds were seen at the Munneswaram
temple in Chilaw yesterday. Popular Astrologer
Chintha Wickremesinghe said the people were not
only holding poojas to overcome the ill-effects, but
some of them were making offerings to get the
blessings of the planetary change.
Killings go on but on lesser scale:
US country report on Lanka
(sundaytimes.lk) The US government’s Sri Lanka
country report on Human Rights Practices 2011
states although the number of unlawful killings
decreased from the figures of the previous year,
there were reports that Government affiliated
military or para-military groups continued with
such killings. The report complied under seven
major headings pointed out three such killings two by the Police and one by the STF.
It further accused the Government of killing and
assaulting civilians by “unknown actors
suspected of association with pro-government
paramilitary groups” associated with Government
Minister Karuna and Eastern Province Chief
Minister S. Chandrakanthan alias “Pillaiyan,” in
the East and the EPDP led by Minister D.
Devananda in Jaffna.
“While some killings were criminal acts, other
appeared to be politically motivated, targeting
persons believed to be LTTE sympathizers,” it
said.
The report stated that though enforced,
involuntary disappearances also declined from
the previous year, still such disappearances
continued with many of them politically
motivated, targeting civil activists and LTTE
sympathizers. Among reported incidents is the
disappearance of Lalith Kumar Weeraraj and
Kugan Muruganadan. According to the Police
there had been 1,700 abductions reported in the
two years 2009 and 2010 mainly carried out by
extortionists. The UN Working Group Enforced
and Involuntary Disappearances noted 5,653
“outstanding cases” as at the end of 2010.
The report also stated that no progress had been
shown in connection with thousands of
disappearances, including that of the journalist
and cartoonist Prageeth Ekneligoda, who
disappeared on January 24, 2010, just before the
General Election and the disappearance of
Stephen Sunthararaj, the project manager at the
Centre for Human Rights and Development.
The report alleged that the Government failed to
publish the findings relating to any

disappearances or whether indictments were
handed down or anyone who had been involved
convicted.
The report stated that there are credible reports
that the security forces tortured and abused
citizens although accurate statistics on reported
torture cases have not been published. The
report stated that the Asian Human Rights
Commission (AHRC) has complied 1,500 cases
of Police torture from 1982 to 2011.
It mentioned various torture methods employed
at the Boossa detention centre where LTTE
suspects were kept. It also noted that there were
“credible allegations” that the Government
maintained undisclosed facilities where LTTE
sympathizers were tortured and killed.
The conditions at the prisons did not meet
international standards due to over crowding and
lack of sanitary facilities, the report said.
“According to the prison officials and civil society
sources, prisons designed for approximately
11,000 inmates held approximately 32,000
prisoners.”
The report pointed out that the Prevention of
Terrorism Act (PTA) has sweeping powers similar
to the emergency regulations that had lapsed on
August 31, 2011.The PTA empowers the
detainees to be held for up to 18 months and
indefinitely for pending trials.
There is widespread impunity particularly for the
cases involving torture, corruption, human rights
abuses and attacks on the media institutions. It
alleged that the Government “consistently failed
to solve attacks on journalists,” including that of
the 2009 killing of Sunday Leader Editor
Lasantha Wickrematunga, the 2010 abduction of
Prageeth Ekneligoda and the July 29 attack on
the Uthayan news editor Gnanasundaram
Kuhanathan. It also alleged the Government
failed further inquiries into high profile cases
investigated by the 2006 Presidential
Commission of Inquiry, including the 2006 killing
of 17 local staff members of the French NGO
Action Against Hunger (ACF) in Mutur.
GL summons UK HC over disputing
President’s claims
By Shamindra Ferdinando
(island.lk) External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L.
Peiris yesterday summoned British High
Commissioner John Rankin to the ministry to
protest against the UK envoy contradicting
President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Victory Day
speech.
A British High Commission spokesperson
yesterday afternoon said that the HC had further
comments on this issue.
Ministry sources told The Island that Prof. Peiris
had expressed displeasure over Rankin
disputing President Rajapaksa’s claim of
scaling down of the military presence and
the non-involvement of the military in civil
administration in the Northern Province
since the conclusion of the conflict in
May, 2009.
In his video, ‘Ask the High
Commissioner’, Rankin challenged
President Rajapaksa’s
statement pertaining to troop deployment in the
Northern Province in his address to the nation on
May 19, on the third anniversary of Sri Lanka’s
war victory over the LTTE.
Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major
General Mahinda Hathurusinghe told The Island
that since the conclusion of the conflict there had
been a steady reduction in the military presence
in the Jaffna peninsula. He revealed that at the
time he took over the peninsula on December 7,
2009, there had been 27,000 troops, though
today there were only 15,600. "There are three
Divisions deployed across the peninsula and the
Jaffna islands. The 51 Division is deployed in the
Jaffna sector, 52 Division in Vadamaratchchy and
55 Division at Elephant Pass. Don’t forget, at the
time eelam war IV erupted, the Jaffna peninsula
had the largest single concentration of armed
forces and police numbering close to 50,000."
Rankin, in his video presentation, discussed the
human rights situation in Sri Lanka with
reference to the Lessons Learnt and
Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) report as well
as the recently launched UK Human Rights
Report. Categorising Sri Lanka as one of the 28
countries accused of major human rights
violations, Rankin stressed the need for freedom
of expression, minority rights, women’s rights
while condemning the country for continuing
abductions and disappearances.
Commenting on the President’s assertion
that the armed forces couldn’t be moved out
of the Northern and Eastern Province due to
the continued anti-Sri Lanka operations
undertaken by the Tamil Diaspora and the
LTTE rump abroad, Rankin said that the
LTTE was no longer engaged in terrorist activity.
He described the absence of terrorism as a good
thing, while reminding the GoSL that the LTTE
remained a proscribed organisation in many
parts of the world, including in the UK.
HC Rankin said that President Rajapaksa had, in
his Victory Day speech, declared that the military
was no longer involved in civil administration in
the Northern and Eastern parts of the country.
Recognising Sri Lanka’s right to maintain normal
military bases throughout the country, like in the
UK, he alleged that the military deployment in the
Northern and Eastern Province was very much
different compared to other parts of the country.
Rankin alleged that the government was
maintaining a very heavy military presence in the
Northern region.

Lakmal Sooriyagoda
(dailymirror.lk) The Colombo Fort Magistrate
yesterday ordered teledrama actress Anushka
Sonali Sayakkara to pay Rs.1,000 as state costs
in a case involving an attempt to extort a sum of
Rs.100,000 from her father.
When the case came up before Magistrate
Kanishka Wijeratne, defence counsel Jayantha
Dias Nanayakkara informed Court that the actress
would not harass her father and moved Court that
a lenient punishment be given her. Defence
counsel further said that his client would not go to
her father’s house again.
The father of the actress did not object to the
proposed settlement. Accordingly, the actress was
ordered to pay a sum of Rs.1,000 as state costs.
The father of the actress had lodged a complaint
with the Slave Island police to the effect that his
daughter had extorted a sum of Rs.100,000 and
attempted to extort a further sum of Rs.100,000 by
means of threats.

(dailymirror.lk) Ambassador Tamara Kunanayakam
has not yet accepted or rejected the offer by the
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to be transferred
to Cuba, the Daily Mirror learns.
The MEA has requested an updated CV from Ms.

response.
“She has two options: to either accept or reject the
offer made by the Ministry. It is up to her. But the
Ministry will go ahead with the decisions already

source said.
In her letter dated May 1 addressed to External

Motion in UK Parl. on deporting Tamils
Ayesha Zuhair
(dailymirror.lk) A formal motion submitted for
debate in the UK Parliament has urged the British
Government to take urgent action to review its
policy of deporting Tamils to Sri Lanka ‘so that
further deaths and human rights abuses can be
prevented.’ Early Day Motion (EDM) 136 on the
‘Deportation of Tamils to Sri Lanka’ tabled in the
House of Commons on May 23 has called upon
Britain to halt ‘the forced return of a group of Tamil
asylum seekers on charter flight PVT030 on 31
May 2012.’ The EDM on Sri Lanka has expressed
concern over the April 2012 killing of
Easwarathasan Kietheeswaran, a Tamil who was
deported to Sri Lanka, and has drawn attention to
the concerns raised by Amnesty International and
Human Rights Watch of the “significant risk” to
Tamils returned to Sri Lanka.
Virendra Sharma, Labour MP for Ealing, Southall
is the primary sponsor of the motion. The other
sponsors are Peter Bottomley (Conservative Party
MP for Worthing West); Mark Durkan (Social
Democratic and Labour Party MP for Foyle);
Andrew George (Liberal Democrats MP for St
Ives); John McDonnell (Labour Party MP for
Hayes and Harlington); and Alan Meale (Labour

Gota wants to change demography: TNA
(dailymirror.lk) TNA MP Suresh Premachandran
refuting recent remarks made by Defence
Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that the
statement was a prelude to changing the
demographic patterns of the North.
In an interview with BBC, Defence secretary
Rajapaksa has said it is not appropriate to view the
north of the country, over which a separatist war
was fought, as a predominantly Tamil area.
“The most recent census revealed that out of the
954,000 residents in the North 900,000 are Tamils
and 23,000 Sinhalese, so what is the Defence
Secretary trying to say? Almost all the census
carried out by the governments, have revealed this
demographic pattern. Is he saying that this is not
true?” MP Premachandran asked.
Premachandran went on to state that that the acts
of the government are clearly set on an agenda. “
The growing number of Buddhist temples in the
area, the militarization of the north and the fact that
there are new Sinhalese settlements in many areas
of the North shows what the Defence Secretary
wants to do is to change the demographic patterns
of the Northern province” he said.(Hafeel Farisz)

This is the first time that Sri Lanka has participated
in the event since 2007.
The Sri Lanka Association Berlin with the support
of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Berlin organized
Sri Lanka’s participation at the parade.
The parade provided a prime opportunity for Sri
Lanka to express peace, harmony and ethnic
reconciliation in the post-conflict era of the country
depicting a rich picture of Sri Lanka’s cultural
heritage.
For its exceptional performance, the Sri Lanka
Association in Berlin as the organiser of Sri
Lanka’s participation was awarded the first prize in

President completes 42 years in politics
(dailynews.lk) President Mahinda Rajapaksa
yesterday completed 42 years since becoming a
Parliamentarian, having first entered Parliament as
its youngest MP in 1970. President Rajapaksa was
elected a Member of Parliament for the Beliatta
electorate at the May 27, 1970 general election.
He succeeded his father D A Rajapaksa to
Parliament and represented the same electorate
his father did from his first election in 1947. He
was the Labour and Vocational Training and
Fisheries Minister in the Cabinet from 1994 to
2001.He also held the portfolio of the Ports and
Shipping in addition to Fisheries, for three months.
He was the Opposition Leader from 2002 to 2004.
He was chosen as the 13th Prime Minister in April
2004.
He had by then risen to the position of Senior Vice
President of the SLFP.
From the time he was chosen Prime Minister in
April 2004 till his election as President, he also
held the Highways portfolio.
He became the country’s fifth Executive President
in 2005 .
He was elected for a second term of office at the
January 26, 2010 Presidential Election with Sri
Lanka recognising him as the national leader who
liberated the country from the Liberation Tigers of
Tamil Eelam and set the country on the path to
peace and rapid economic development.
Mahinda Rajapaksa was first elected President of
Sri Lanka in 2005 on a wide-ranging and largely
people-oriented policy as laid out in the Mahinda
Chintana.
He now leads the country towards post-conflict
reconstruction and reconciliation.
Douglas a witness in case against LTTE
(island.lk) Having released thousands of LTTE
cadres taken into custody at the conclusion of the
conflict, the government intends to pursue legal
action against those who are hardcore elements.
Of some 12,000 held in May, 2009, over
10,000 were released in batches over the
past two and a half years. The remaining
suspects are held pending rehabilitation.
Prosecution witness, EPDP leader
Douglas Devananda will testify at the
Colombo High Court today (May 28)
when an LTTE attempt to assassinate him
at the height of the conflict is taken up in
HC No 3. Minister Devananda’s
spokesman, Nelson Edirisinghe told The
Island yesterday that the HC case dealt
with the blast caused by LTTE operative,
Sthyaleela, who blew herself up at the Kollupitiya
police station. She had been arrested in Minister
Devananda’s Kollupitiya office and taken for
interrogation to nearby Kollupitiya police station
adjoining Temple Trees.
Government and political sources told The Island
that the ongoing case was significant as there
hadn’t been anyone previously targeted
by LTTE suicide squads being listed as a
prosecution witness. Asked whether the
government was planning to prosecute
hardcore terrorists in custody,
authoritative sources said that those
involved in major terrorist operations
would be prosecuted.
Among those still in custody are a few
security personnel detained during the
conflict for their alleged involvement in
intelligence gathering for the LTTE.
Sources said that among the detained were a
Colonel and Superintendent of police, allegedly
involved in operations targeting President Mahinda
Rajapaksa, among others.
North 'not just for Tamils'- Gota
(dailymirror.lk) Sri Lanka's defence secretary has
said it is not appropriate to view the north of the
country, over which a separatist war was fought,
as a predominantly Tamil area.
Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, who many credit with
defeating Tamil rebels, also told the BBC there
were few civilian casualties in the war's closing
phase.
Human rights groups say tens of thousands died
at the end of that war.
He also cast doubt on accounts of enforced
disappearances after the war.
Mr Rajapaksa, brother of Sri Lanka's President
Mahinda Rajapaksa, portrayed a normalising Sri
Lanka with opportunities for all regardless of
ethnicity.
But he firmly declined to discuss Sarath Fonseka the man at the helm of the army at the end of the
war and who later fell out with the president - who
was released from prison last Monday.
The army defeated the separatist Liberation Tigers
of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels after 26 years of a
bloody civil war in May 2009.
Freedom to move
Meeting Mr Rajapaksa in his heavily guarded
office near the Colombo shorefront, the BBC
asked him about a recent local government
reshuffle in the north which has seen some senior
Tamil officials replaced with Sinhalese personnel.
"Earlier before the war, all were Sinhalese," Mr
Rajapaksa said. Just as "a lot of" Tamil officers
worked in southern districts, Sinhalese and
Muslims should be able to work in the north. "It is
part of Sri Lanka."
So were Tamils correct to view the north as a
predominantly Tamil place?
"Why should be that? Why should be that?" Mr
Rajapaksa said. "If you are a Sri Lankan citizen
you must be able to go and buy the properties
from anywhere. I'm not talking about the forced
settlements, I'm talking about the freedom for a Sri
Lankan to live anywhere in this country."
Many Tamils favour provincial devolution to give
them a greater voice in areas where they
predominate.
The government and the largest Tamil party have
been holding talks on this issue, but these have
currently stalled.
Gotabhaya Rajapaksa commented on the
contentious subject of civilian casualties in the
final stage of the war - one factor that prompted a
critical resolution on Sri Lanka at the UN Human
Rights Council in March.
A recent government census, given little publicity,
suggested some 7,400 northern Sri Lankans were
killed during the last months as a result of the
fighting.
But Mr Rajapaksa said only a few of these were
civilians and most were Tamil Tiger fighters.
"Do you think it was a battle between the Sri
Lankan army and civilians? It's a battle between
the army and the terrorist group which were
equally armed like the military," he said.
"Within this 7,000-odd number that includes the
combatants as well!"
Six thousand army soldiers had been killed in this
period, he said.
He said the censustakers had visited
family after family and
taken the names of all
those who died. There
might have been
"certain" civilian
casualties but "not in
the numbers you
quote".
If there were proven
violations of the laws
of war "then we can
punish, no problem,
but you have to prove
that".

Gankanda enlarged on bail
By Norman Palihawadana
(island.lk) United National Party parliamentarian
Dunesh Gankanda, who was wanted by police
over biting the nose of a businessman and
assaulting him at the Galle Face Hotel on
Saturday night, surrendered to the Kollupitiya
police through his lawyers yesterday morning. He
was subsequently produced by police before Fort
Magistrate Kanishka Wijeratne and enlarged on
two personal bonds in Rs100,000 each and cash
bail in Rs 30,000.
After his surrender Gankanda was questioned at
length by the police on the attack on businessman
V. T. Thivakaran.
Meanwhile, police have also recorded the
statements of eyewitnesses to the incident.
Thivakaran, who was initially treated at the
Colombo National Hospital, is now recovering at a
private hospital.
MR's assertion is an insult- Karunanidhi
(dailymirror.lk) Describing as “an insult to injury”
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's
assertion that his country would not bow to outside
pressure and withdraw the Army from the North,
the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president
M. Karunanidhi on Sunday said the Tamil Eelam
Supporters Organisation (TESO)would soon
organise a conference to discuss these issues and
take a decision.
Recalling a report released by the US secretary of
State Hillary Clinton that the major human rights
problems were unlawful killings by security forces
and government-allied paramilitary groups, often
in predominantly Tamil areas, he said such reports
further strengthened his argument in favour of a
separate Tamil Eelam.( The Hindu)
TNA says 13-A not acceptable
(island.lk) The Illankai Tamil Arasu Katchi did not
consider the 13th Amendment an acceptable
solution, TNA leader R. Sampanthan, MP said,
addressing the 14th Annual ITAK Convention in
Batticaloa, on Sunday. He said: "Our expectation
for a solution to the ethnic problem of the
sovereignty of the Tamil people is based on a
political structure outside that of a unitary
government, in a united Sri Lanka in which Tamil
people have all the powers of government needed
to live with self respect and self sufficiency. We
believe that only within such a structure of
government can the Tamil people truly enjoy the
right to internal self-determination that is their
inalienable right."
The TNA had, Sampanthan said, softened its
stance on certain issues while showing
compromise only as a diplomatic strategy but it did
not mean any change in its fundamental
objectives. "The softening of our stance
concerning certain issues and the compromise we
show in other issues, are diplomatic strategies to
ensure that we do not alienate the international
community. They are not indications that we have
abandoned our fundamental objectives."
Sampanthan said: "The position that the North and
East of Sri Lanka are the areas of historic
habitation of the Tamil speaking people cannot be
compromised in this structure of government. We
must have unrestricted authority to govern our
own land, protect our own people, and develop our
own economy, culture and tradition. Powers must
be allocated under this structure based on the
understanding that meaningful devolution should
go beyond the 13th Amendment to the
Constitution passed in 1987. This position has
been accepted by our party. Our acceptance of
this position does not mean that we consider the
13th Amendment to be an acceptable solution, nor
that, in the event our right to internal self
determination is continuously denied, we will not
claim our right under international law to external
self determination. It only means that this is the
only realistic solution today.
"The above solution is also one that is likely to be
acceptable to members of the international
community, including India and the United States,
whose support and assistance is necessary in
order for us to succeed in our struggle for political
autonomy today."
Sampanthan re-elected leader of ITAK
(dailymirror.lk) As Tamil politics in Sri Lanka totters
on the brink of indecision that’s steadily leading it
to irrelevance, the Tamil National Alliance leader
R. Sampanthan was re-elected leader of the
Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi at its 14th National
Convention in the Eastern headquarter town of
Batticaloa on Saturday. Maavai Senathirajah was
elected party general secretary.
ITAK is the most important constituent of the TNA.
The TNA is the lone credible voice of Tamils in the
Northern Province.
The ITAK was forced to change its meeting venue
at the last moment after the earlier place they had
fixed, was suddenly and inexplicably engulfed in
fire. One source in Batticaloa claimed that the
place was fire-bombed.
The meeting of the party was being held in an
area that is at the heart of a turf war between two
former Tamil Tigers – the Eastern Province Chief
Minister Sivanesathurai Santhirakanthan (better
known as Pillaiyan, who was once a child soldier)
and Deputy Minister, Vinayagamoorthy
Muralitharan (better known as Col. Karuna Amman
who was former Eastern Commander of the Tamil
Tigers).
Mr. Pillaiyan’s party, the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai
Puligal, was not in favour of ITAK holding the
convention in Batticaloa.
The meeting did go ahead, and all elections were
held as per the Constitution of ITAK. Among the
prominent names, E. Saravanabhavan, MP, who
runs the Uthayan newspaper, was elected
secretary (rehabilitation and resettlement) and
Sivagnanam Sreetharan, MP, was elected
secretary (propaganda). As expected, M.A.
Sumanthiran MP, was elected secretary (Legal
and Foreign Affairs). (The Hindu)
Army was not involved in insignificant
illegal activities - Fonseka
(adaderana.lk) Due to the irresponsible
statements of the President the Army was
blamed for various attacks on journalists and
media suppression during the war, former Army
Commander Sarath Fonseka stated.
Speaking to BBC Sandeshaya,
Fonseka stated this in
response to a question put
forward regarding the Army’s
alleged involvement with the
attacks on journalists such as
Keith Noyahr and Namal
Perera.
He said that there was no
need for the army to be
involved in pointless illegal
activities around Colombo
while the BBC Sandeshaya highlighted the
abduction and the brutal assault on Noyahr as
well as the assault on Namal Perera.
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe had
alleged in parliament that the Army Intelligence
was involved in the attacks against the media but
Fonseka stated that the President had invited the
heads of media organizations to Temple Trees
and had told them that if they created problems
with the army it would not be possible for the
President to solve them while
adding that it was irresponsible
statements such as these that
caused some people to point
fingers at the army.
He added that it was the
government’s duty to seek out
those who were responsible
for these attacks and punish
them.
Speaking on the Channel 4
video that raises war crimes
allegations against the government, Fonseka
stated that although he has not seen the footage
shown in the video, it was the government’s
responsibility to investigate the matter.

need to get in touch with him," de
Silva said, emphasizing the importance of taking
tangible action to tackle waste, corruption and
irregularities in both private and public sector.
The UNPer alleged that Abeygunawardena
absolutely had no qualification to be
accommodated on the board of NSB other than
his position as President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s
astrologer. Could anything be as ridiculous as
having the President’s astrologer as director of the
NSB, he said.
Maybe Abeysunawardena should have been
appointed the head of the Met Department, the MP
said, urging the government not to create
vacancies in the public sector for those near and
dear to UPFA chiefs.
Abeygunawardena resigned his post on May 18
about three weeks after the transaction. Had the
Opposition remained silent, the government
wouldn’t have reversed the transaction forcing the
sellers to purchase nearly eight million shares at
the same average of Rs. 50 a share altogether
worth Rs. 390 mn.
Both the UNP and JVP launched a withering
attack on the UPFA in parliament over the deal,
with MPs lashing out at the former
NSB Chairman, Pradeep
Kariyawasam. Subsequent to
protests, Kariyawasam sent his
resignation papers to President
Rajapaksa and Treasury Chief, Dr.
P.B. Jayasundera.
Asked whether the UNP would push
for a comprehensive investigation as
part of its overall measures to fight
corruption, MP de Silva said that a reverse
transaction wouldn’t be enough. It would be
important to punish those involved in the
transaction, he said, warning the failure on the part
of the government to take punitive action would
encourage other questionable deals.
The MP said that they would be closely monitoring
the situation, particularly to ensure those who had
lost their plum posts due to exposure of the
corrupt deal were not accommodated elsewhere.
While the masses were struggling to make
ends meet due to rising cost of living and
mismanagement of the economy, the ruling
elite and those associated with it were living
luxurious life.
Responding to another query, de Silva said
that there should be a mechanism to ensure
that those in power couldn’t accommodate
their stooges in public sector jobs and bestow
perks and privileges on them at the taxpayers’
expense.
The MP joked that appointing
Abeygunawardena was probably a pilot
project. Depending on its success, the
government could have appointed astrologers
to all public sector enterprises, the
parliamentary watchdog committee (COPE)
and perhaps in the parliament as well through
the National List.

Govt. slams door on UNHRC team
(sundaytimes.lk) Advice and technical
assistance not required, Lanka will do what is
necessary on its own By Our Political Editor
The Government is to reject a move by the
United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva
to send a team to Colombo to discuss the offer
of “advice and technical assistance” towards
implementing the US-backed resolution on Sri
Lanka.
The visit of such a delegation is conveyed in a
May 14 letter which the UN Human Rights High
Commissioner Navaneethan Pillay has sent to
the Ministry of External Affairs. She has said that
such a visit would take place in July.
The government is to take up the position that
the visit of such a delegation would not be
acceptable since Sri Lanka was not a party to
the adoption of the UNHRC resolution. Hence
any visit by UN officials with matters related to
the UN resolution would not be welcomed by
the Government, a high ranking official source
said yesterday.
During the March sessions of the UNHRC, one
of the three key elements in the resolution
adopted was to encourage “…the Office of the
United Nations High Commissioner for Human
Rights and relevant special procedures
mandate holders to provide, in consultation
with, and with the concurrence of, the
Government of Sri Lanka, advice and technical
assistance on implementing the (two previously
mentioned) steps; and requests the Office of
the High Commissioner to present a report on
the provision of such assistance to the Human
Rights Council at its twenty-second session.”
The Government is also taking up the position
that on its own, action was being taken on two
other points made in the resolution. They are the
implementation of the recommendations of the
Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission
(LLRC) and the formulation of an Action Plan.
The source said, “we are taking these steps on
our own and will not require any outside
assistance.” The source pointed out that visits by
any UN team, as the resolution specifies, should
be “in consultation with, and with the
concurrence of, the Government of Sri Lanka.”
In the light of this, there is still uncertainty over
an impending visit to Sri Lanka by Ms. Pillai.
This is on the grounds that the Government is
unwilling to discuss any issues related to the UN
resolution.

GKDA members seek redress
in Supreme Court
Jayantha de Silva
(dailynews.lk) The Golden Key Depositors'
Association members individually filed motions
and affidavits in the Supreme Court seeking
redress .
The petitioners are Roshan Harindra Fernando
and Ishani Srimathi Fernando, in addition to
several other petitioners. The respondents cited
are the Central Bank, together with additional
respondents.
The joinder petition states interalia:
The seventh petitioner Lalith Kotelawala in filing
his bail application by way of an affidavit had
agreed to dispose his assets and compensate
the depositors.
However it remains a puzzle as to why he has
not done so. Therefore Lalith Kotelawala has
violated his bail conditions. The respondents' bail
bond should be revoked.
Although it is the responsibility of the Attorney

buses, trains, hotels and many other targets, he

"All this we have stopped... but you don't talk
about that. You are supporting the terrorist
cause!"
'Suddenly freed'
Gotabhaya Rajapaksa gave scant comfort to the
families of people who have recently
disappeared.
Human rights campaigners documented 32 such
disappearances between October and February
and several more since then.
But Mr Rajapaksa dismissed this as "wrong
allegations".
"These are lies... to prevent the visitors coming
into Sri Lanka, the investment coming to Sri
Lanka, to give a wrong image of Sri Lanka by the
rump of this LTTE which is remaining outside and
trying to damage the image of Sri Lanka," he
said.
Recent cases include Ramasamy Prabagaran,
who was abducted before he was due to testify
on police torture and remains missing; and
Sagara Senaratne, who was suddenly freed after
his brother-in-law, a minister, reportedly
contacted top government figures.
But Mr Rajapaksa asked why the authorities
should want to victimise such people and said
many recorded as missing were criminals who
had escaped abroad.
In the north, he said, life was getting back to
normal - fishing restrictions had been lifted, the
army had moved out of contentious areas such
as running restaurants, and anti-LTTE Tamil
groups had now been disarmed.
In the country as a whole, he said, the
government had opened a window to progress by
ending the war.
"This is a time that... irrespective of whether
Sinhalese, Tamil or Muslim, you as a Sri Lankan
move forward."

Jaffna's first luxury Apartment development launched - Designed build by Sanken
COLOMBO: TULASI MAHAL, Jaffna's first luxury
apartment development project has been launched
in the prominent northern city recently. The high
profile project is scheduled for completion in
September 2013. Located in the heart of the city,
on the A9 Road in close proximity to the Kachheri,
Tulasi Mahal will be a pioneering luxury apartment
project in Jaffna, a city that is experiencing rapid
economic growth in recent
months.
The project is being designed
and built by Peninsular
Property Developers (Pvt) Ltd,
a subsidiary of Sanken
Construction (Pvt) Ltd,
synonymous for quality
standards and superior
craftsmanship.
Tulasi Mahal has been planned
as an exclusive 36 unit two
bedroom apartment building
which will include all the luxury
fittings and facilities befitting
this one-of-a-kind project. The
6 storey edifice will feature
luxury fittings and modern
amenities to provide a feeling
of being pampered to the hilt.
The building has an open
recreational area where
families can indulge in
fellowship.
A well conceived layout
blends the functional with the
aesthetic, with spacious and
comfortable living spaces , air conditioning, fitted pantry
cupboards with gas hob and
cooker hood to offer
convenience and
comfort in equal
measure. Featuring
luxury fittings,
polished ceramic
floor tiles for flo
engineered doors,
stand by generator ,
CCTV system in the
main lobby and 24hour security

a perfect setting. The
luxury apartments also offer a
novel concept of a 2 bedroom/2
key system, whereby it is possible
to have the option to use the
apartment as one large two bed
room unit or as two separate
single bed room units as
required.
Moreover, Tulasi Mahal is located
in the lap of nature, with lush
greenery in its immediate vicinity.
Residents can revel in the beauty
of nature and yet be secure in the
knowledge that they live minutes
away from essential amenities
such as places of worship,
railway station, main bus stand,
schools, kachcheri, shops, offices
and government institutions.
As the premier luxury apartment
development in Jaffna, this project
is generating much interest
amongst investors who see this as
a unique opportunity to own a
luxurious apartment that mirrors
leading real estate projects in
Colombo. Jaffna is fast moving
towards regaining its past glory as a
business and education hub in the
country, making it an ideal
investment destination. Keeping in
mind the rapid proliferation of
branch offices in Jaffna by leading
corporates in the country, Jaffna is
poised to fast track infrastructure
growth and stimulate economic
activity.
Land prices in Jaffna are rising
exponentially and given the high
cost of construction, investing in a
sound project such as Tulasi Mahal
makes for a wise investment
decision. The luxury apartment
project is economically viable,
prices at unbelievably competitive
rates.
A prime project of this nature will always
appreciate over time and in fact will be a good
hedge against rising property prices in Jaffna

a residence; for rental purposes; or purely as an
investment, real estate experts estimate an

Lastly, as the flagship luxury

investing in Tulasi Mahal now offers
a head start for investors seeking
first mover advantage in emerging
economic hubs in the country.

On Friday 25th May the ballroom of the Park Plaza

night for a very special young girl, Thusha

Last year Thusha became the youngest victim of

Stockwell, where moments earlier Thusha was
happily dancing in the shop aisle.
The fundraising night was the inspiration of

The guest of honour for the
evening, Thusha arrived in a
beautiful pink dress accompanied

After young Sri Lankan dancers

ballroom and performing a

starred on The Penn and Teller's show with

Lanka’s tallest tower to come up
Sri Lanka’s tallest building, running in to 68
floor constructed by Indocean Developers
(Pvt) Ltd, a venture of Indian property group
South City Projects (Kolkata) Pvt. Ltd, will
get underway in August and would be
completed in three years. Located opposite
Beira Lake, the 400-apartment
condominium tower development with topof-line finishes, is speculated to cost around
Rs. 8 billion.
The exclusive residential tower is looking to
target expatriates, non-resident Sri Lankans
and others. In-house facilities will include a
swimming pool, gym, lounge, function room,
play area for children, tennis courts and
many other facilities. The mixed-use project
is recognised by its 57th floor SkyPark with
its 150-meter infinity swimming pool,
observation deck and restaurants. Pradeep
Sureka, Director, Indocean Developers said,
“We were looking to enter the Sri Lanka
Proposed condominium tower
property market and saw this as a suitable
opportunity.Urban Development Authority,
Colombo, offered us the land and we were
attracted by the location of the site.”
In their first overseas venture, SCPKL has
commissioned world renowned architect
Moshe Safdie and his team at Safdie
Architects to design an iconic residential
tower. At 65-storeys the building will be the
tallest in Colombo, and is to be Safdie’s first
project in Sri Lanka. Architects for the
project would be Safdie Architects, Boston,
USA while Singapore based Sri Lankan
Architect Athula Amarasekera of Design
Team3 will be the Submission and Detailing
Architects for the project.
"My first visit to Sri Lanka was three years
ago. I was very fascinated by the city and
was amazed to see what a wonderful
architectural disposition it has. Colombo is
transforming.
They are urbanizing rapidly, and it is
probably a good time to have a project that
will set a benchmark for future
development,” Safdie said.
Situated in the heart of the Sri Lankan
capital, the man-made lake is already
surrounded by major productive use
buildings such as offices, hotels, shopping
malls, apartments, banks and commercial
and leisure establishments.
A 10-acre parcel of land originally belonging
to the erstwhile Colombo Commercial
Company is now being undertaken for
redevelopment. Spanning an impressive
lake-shore stretch, the waterfront will be
converted into an all-pedestrian boardwalk
and promenade bordered by fashion, retail,
restaurants, spa and entertainment
services.
Kolkata-based SCPKL, established in 2000,
is one of the largest property
groups in India. SCPKL has an
impressive track record
developing large-scale
residential and commercial projects,
including the record-making, tallest South
City residential tower in Kolkata, and the
South City shopping mall covering a million
sq.ft, making it the largest mall in the
country, also in Kolkata. In addition, the
company has built numerous IT parks,
industrial estates and townships in Chennai,
Hyderabad, across Gujarat and in Kolkata.
“We will set the precedent of development
in the Beira Lake district as we understand
the fabric of the area and will create a
showpiece on the lake frontage. This will
certainly be lauded as the first of its kind in
luxurious, yet environmentally friendly
residential living,” said director, Indocean
Developers, Jugal Khetawat.

Midland Lankans cricket club was founded in 2010
by a few cricket enthusiasts in Birmingham in
response to an invitation by the Blue CeyLions
Cricket Club (Manchester) to play a friendly game.
Ever since then, the club has grown from strength
to strength and we are now proud to say that it is
one of the best Lankan teams pursuing its passion
for this glorious game in England. More
importantly, it has created a lot of opportunities for
Sri Lankans in the Midlands area to get together.
Having played a few friendly games in the first
season, it was decided by the newly elected
committee that it was high time the club joined an
established league in Birmingham. As a result,
MLCC joined the Sandwell Cricket league in 2011
which is a well established league in Birmingham
which has been running for the past 20 years.
MLCC managed to complete an illustrious run in
the league having won 9 out the 10 games it
played in the league. It managed to carry this form
into the friendly matches winning 4 out of the 6
matches.
Unity and fellowship has been two key features of
MLCC's team culture and all the senior players
worked hard to create an atmosphere which
immensely helped new players to easily fit into the
team. Whilst giving prominence to performance,
every effort was made by the seniors to create a
culture where each member had a good time
playing cricket to the best of their abilities. This
culture attracted a lot of new members and some
were even willing to come all the way from cities as
far as Gloucester to Birmingham regularly to be a
part of this family. One of the key reasons for the
success of the clubs during this short period is the
support shown by the families and friends.
Midland Lankans T20 Cricket Tournament 2012
The culmination of the MLCC's brief history is
winning the inaugural T20 tournament. This was
held in 2011 with the participation of Blue CeyLions
(Manchester) and Stoke Sri Lankans CC. Having
won two hard fought games in the first two rounds,
MLCC walked into the finals against The Blue
CeyLions CC in fading light. In a match reduced to
16 overs, the bowlers of MLCC managed to restrict
the strong batting line up of the BCLCC to 86 runs.
MLCC got off to a quick start scoring nearly 25
runs in the first 3 overs but suffered a shocking
middle order collapse leaving a tall order for the
dashing opener Kosala Wickremesinghe who
played an astonishing innings to win the game for
Midland Lankans single handedly. Dhanushka won
the award for the 'Man of the Series' for his
outstanding performance with the bat and the ball
and Kosala won the 'Man of the Finals' award for
his match winning performance.
The success of the tournament in 2011 led us to
have the tournament this year in a larger scale.
The T20 Cricket Tournament 2012 will have 4
participating teams. They are:
Midland Lankans Cricket Club
Blue CeyLions Cricket Club
Bristol Sri Lankans Cricket Club
Stoke Sri Lankans Cricket Club
The Midland Lankans CC is currently playing for
the Single Team Sunday Cricket League in
Tamworth area after receiving an invitation from
the administration team. MLCC started the season
with a clinical performance against the Cadbury/
Kraft CC by beating them by 89 runs. MLCC was
able to carry this form into the second league
match against the Highway Cricket Club by beating
them comprehensively a week ago. It will be
playing 10 league matches and approximately 6
friendly matches against a few other Lankan teams
during this season.
Our team's vision is to attract more keen members
who share the same passion for cricket and groom
the next generation of MLCC. In the forthcoming
years we will also be focusing on improving our
performance and becoming a leading cricket club
in Birmingham.
Current Squad
The current team is led by Irusha who is
a hard hitting middle order batsman and
a very useful right arm off spinner.
Irusha has been with the club since its
inception and has been instrumental in bringing the
club to its present status.

Manju is the current president of the
club and has served the club since its
formation. He is a very reliable top order
batsman who has played some crucial
knocks last summer.
Geethaka joined the club in 2011 and
serves as the Secretary in the present
committee. He is a reliable opening
batsman and the safe pair of hands
behind the wickets.
Shantha is the 'live wire' of the team and
the force that drove the team forward
throughout its short history. He is also a
solid middle order player and safe slip
fielder.
Ruwan is a hard hitting top order
batsman who, on his day, could demolish
any bowling attack. He is also a very
useful medium pace bowler. Ruwan
served the team as the captain in 2011
and completed a successful season.
Kosala is a steady opening batsman and
an excellent fielder. He is capable of
ripping any bowling attack apart with
towering sixes. The highlight of his
previous season was winning the 'Player
of the finals' at the T20 tournament for his
outstanding knock.
Ragu is one of the best all-rounders of
the team and is in prime form currently
having scored a brilliant 89 against
Cadbury/Kraft CC this May. His
consistent line and length has been a
trademark of his bowling. He is the
current treasurer of the club.
Dhanushka has been the most
consistent performer of the club in 2011
and managed to score a century and 4
half centuries during the season. He
possesses a 'Sarwan' like style to his
batting and very stylish technique
allowing him to play every shot in the book.
Gamunu spearheads the pace attack of
the team and is a consistent performer for
the team with the new ball. He possesses
the ability to swing the new ball both ways.
He is also a hard hitting batsman.
Himanga is a handy all rounder who is
highly reluctant to give his wicket away
without a fight. He is also an emerging
medium pace bowler who has improved
noticeably during the winter training
season.
Navod is the find of the 2011 season. His
talent as an all-rounder has won a few
matches for the Midland Lankans.
Unarguably the best fielder of the side
and an exceptionally talented seamer
who opens the attack with Gamunu.
Jitendra is a technically correct middle
order batsman and the only non Sri
Lankan player of the club. Jit has been an
enthusiastic supporter of the club
eversince he became a member.
Vinod is the newest member of the team
and has shown his potential as a
technically correct batsman within a very
short period.
Pasan is another new addition to the
squad. He has shown his promise in the
out field as a quick mover.
Pradeep has been a devoted supported of
MLCC all throughout. He plays as a right
hand batsman and a part time wicket
keeper.
Salinda is a right hand batsman and
served the MLCC committee in 2011 as
the treasurer. Salinda has been an ardent
supporter of all MLCC initiatives from the

they went down by a solitary point (33-32) in one
of the best schools rugby matches played last
season.
Despite losing they won plenty of admiration for
stretching their more fancied opponents to the
maximum and also had the huge satisfaction of
scoring more tries than their opponents.
Wesley College missed out another golden
opportunity of overcoming St. Joseph’s College in
another thrilling league tournament match which
ended in a 13 all draw.
Once again they looked the better side on the
field and could have pulled off the match had
they converted both tries while conceding only a
solitary try and two penalties to their opponents.
The Wesleyites continued with their bad luck
even during the latter stages of last years season
where they lost another close game against
Dharmaraja College Kandy (23-25) by a mere
two-point margin.
They were made to regret for the whole season
for not being able to add the finishing touches to
some of their matches and had they won at least
two more games they would have certainly
remained in the ‘A’ division.
Nevertheless Wesley College has always
maintained a reputation as one of the most
dangerous teams and they have proved this on
more than a couple of occasions having brought
down many top teams in the recent past in their
own style.
In fact in 2010 they created a major upset when
they defeated a star studded Kingswood team

Malinga pulls out of Middlesex
(dailymirror.lk) Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith
Malinga has decided against playing for Middlesex
in English county cricket's Twenty20 competition,
the county's managing director Angus Fraser
announced.
The 28-year-old paceman, whose unusual
'slingshot' action makes him difficult to face, has
been told to rest after completing his Indian
Premier League duties with the Mumbai Indians.
Malinga, who retired from Test cricket last year,
complained of soreness to his knee and back after
the IPL campaign. "Naturally, we are extremely
disappointed that Lasith will not be playing for
Middlesex CCC in this summer's t20," said Fraser.
"Everyone at the club was looking forward to
working with and watching Lasith play for The
Panthers. His presence would have added a
healthy dose of star dust to proceedings.
"I totally understand Lasith's concerns - his
workload has been and is high - but I am
disappointed we are the side to be denied of his
services.
"A lot of work goes in to securing these deals and
getting 'No Objection Certificates' from the
relevant governing bodies.
"But we are not the only county to suffer in this
way and over the coming days we will do all we
can to secure the services of another high quality
international cricketer for our T20 campaign,"
added the former England pace bowler and cricket
correspondent. (Indian Express)

The reward? Relegation into the lower category

To say that it is absolutely stunning is an

something wrong somewhere. That
somewhere is nowhere but the SLC rulebook.
“We have just gone by the rulebook. We can’t
deviate or bend rules. According to
standings, NCC finished last. So there is no
two words about it, they have to go out,”
said SLC Tournament committee chairman
Roshan Iddamalgoda.

St. Sylvester’s out of danger zone
School Rugby Division-I Group ‘B’ Round-up
By Chathura Pinnawala
(island.lk) St. Sylvester’s College was the biggest
beneficiary of the week five action of the Singer
inter-school Under-20 division-I Group ‘B’ as they
lifted themselves out of the demotion places with
a tight 37-34 victory over Mahanama College.
St. Sylvester’s occupy the 8th position with four
rounds to go due to their triumph and Nalanda
College replace the lads from Kandy in the
relegation places. That is by virtue of losing to
Thurstan College 29-10 and Thurstan swaps
places with Mahanama to go up to 4th.
But realistically they can’t harbour hopes of
gaining instant promotion as the merry ways of
the top three has no signs of cooling off. The
question of who receives passes for the Group
‘A’ next year will only be answered when
Dharmaraja College, St. Thomas’ College and
Wesley College face-off each other.
The trio has been streets ahead of the other
teams and results of week 5 merely confirmed
that fact. St. Thomas’ kept Lumbini College shut
to record a massive 76-0 win while Wesley
thrashed Carey 88-3 who are embedded to the
base of the table. Dharmaraja steamed up their
point’s difference to whopping 364 points by lay
wasting to C. W. W. Kannangara College 106-9,
breaking the century barrier yet again.
The sevens champions has touched down 65
times so far which is staggeringly 13 tries in
average per-a-game and St. Thomas’ and
Wesley has identical numbers in 43 tries each.
Nalanda and Carey’s match this week could be
pivotal for both sides’ survival bids and Lumbini
vs Wesley, Dharmaraja vs Mahanama and St.
Thomas’ vs C. W. W. Kannangara all seems
foregone conclusions on paper.

SL wheelchair tennis team unlucky again
By Revata S. Silva
(island.lk) Sri Lanka’s wheelchair tennis team,
which features soldiers who have lost their limbs
during the North and East civil war, brought credit
to the motherland getting the third place in this
year’s World Team Cup, the virtual World Cup of
wheelchair tennis, for the
second time in three years
in the second category of
men’s segment, the World
Group 2, in this year’s 12nation event which ended in
Seoul, Rep. of Korea last
week.
Yet they were unfortunate
once again that they lost
the key semi-final fixture
against South Africa which
consisted players whom
they have defeated only
months before in Sri Lanka.
Had Sri Lanka beaten South Africa in the World
Group 2 semi-finals this time, they would have
earned the long elusive qualification to the highest
tier of the tournament, the World Group 1, for the
first time ever.
"Losing to the South Africans was disappointing
considering that Gamini (Dissanayake) had beaten
his South African opponent (whom he lost against
in the semi-finals in Korea) at the Negombo Open
tournament just two months ago. Similarly, Upali
(Rajakaruna) and Gamini had joined together to
beat their South African
opponents in Doubles too,
earlier at both Negombo
and SSC Open
tournaments this year," said
Lt. Col. Shiran Abeysekera,
the Secretary of the Sri
Lanka Tennis Association
Wheelchair Tennis
Committee.
"Unfortunately, the semifinal turned out to be the Sri
Lankan pair’s first and only
off-day in the week-long
championship (in Korea)," a
communiqué issued by the SLTA said yesterday.
"The saddest part of the semi-final loss was that it
cost the country’s long-awaited promotion to
Group 1 of next year’s World Championship," Lt.
Col. Abeysekera said.
