A Message from President B. Kaye Walter
Dear Alumni,
You have company.
Thanks to the dedication to student success
at all levels of the institution, record
numbers of students continue to join your
ranks each year – and the College is being
recognized for it.
Based on data compiled by Community
College Week, more students now graduate
from Bergen than any other two-year
institution in New Jersey, making it the state’s top associate degree granting
college.
Taking it a step further, Bergen now ranks 29th among all two-year
institutions in the U.S., jumping up 14 spots from the previous year’s
rankings.
By focusing our strategic planning and execution on a “commitment to
completion” through employing an award-winning faculty, supplying efficient
student service resources and high-technology facilities, Bergen aims to
support students at all levels – just as I hope you found when you enrolled
here.
For these efforts, we’ve also been recognized on the national scene: in the
fall, the White House announced that the College would lead the
administration of a $15 million federal grant with other community colleges
and business partners to create a healthcare career pathways system.
Ultimately, we expect to educate, train and place approximately 2,000 people
in new jobs. Further, the Cerullo Learning Assistance Center earned the 2014
National College Learning Center Association Frank L. Christ Outstanding
Learning Center Award, which makes it the No. 1 two-year college tutoring
resource in the country. Bergen is the first New Jersey college or university
to win the award.
Taken in total, these three items reflect the College’s status as not only a
regional leader, but also as a national model institution.
So when I say you have company, you are part of an elite group: our Bergen
community. Thanks for being part of it.
Sincerely,
B. Kaye Walter, Ph.D.

Health Professions Integrated Teaching Center Rises on Paramus Campus College Tutoring Center Named
Best in Nation
As January ended ironworkers were
completing the steel structure for the $26
million Health Professions Integrated
Teaching Center at the school’s main
campus in Paramus. The building
represents the College’s capital
improvement project as part of the $750
million Building our Future Bond Act,
approved by New Jersey voters in 2012.
The three-story, 65,000 square-foot facility
is the first free-standing new construction
on campus since the building of West Hall
in 2007. Currently, more than 1,000
students enroll in health professions
programs such as dental hygiene,
radiography and nursing at Bergen. The
College offers nine degree and certificate
programs and nine non-credit certificate
programs as part of its Division of Health
Professions. Bergen’s president, Dr. B.
Kaye Walter, said the center will provide
new opportunities for those students,
preparing them for entry into the
occupational sector with the highest
projected net job growth of any field – 3%
from 2010-2020 – according to the Bureau
of Labor Statistics. The center will allow
the College to offer new amenities,
technologies and community resources to
meet the country’s evolving healthcare
industry. In total, the center will include 26
classrooms and laboratories including
medical simulation and computer labs.
The center also will feature a ground-floor
dental hygiene clinic, a laboratory for
Bergen students that also offers low-cost
preventive oral healthcare for the
community and has hosted free oral
cancer screenings and prophylaxis for
children.
Class of 2014 Boasts Most Candidates for Graduation in BCC History
Nearly 1,000 of the 2,862 Bergen
Community College candidates for
graduation accepted their diplomas during
the College’s 45th commencement
ceremony on May 22 at the Izod Center in
East Rutherford. Graduates ranged in age
from 17 to 65, including a mother and
daughter receiving their degrees together.
American Express CEO and Chairman
Kenneth Chenault delivered the keynote
address and urged the graduates to use
their success to help others reach their
goals: “Real leaders are simply people who
know their values, act on those values and
empower others to do the same.”
Valedictorian Maria De Abreu, who moved
to Hackensack three years ago from
Caracas, Venezuela, to pursue her degree
at BCC in engineering science, was one of
66 graduates to attain a perfect 4.0 GPA.
“Be unique. Be different. Do the
impossible. It’s kind of fun,” Maria told
fellow graduates.
The National College Learning Center
Association (NCLCA) has named the Bergen
Community College Cerullo Learning
Assistance Center as the best two-year
school tutoring resource in the nation.
“In nominating the Cerullo Center, I hoped
the judges would recognize what those of
us who work at the College know very well:
it is an amazing resource staffed by
talented and dedicated people who play a
major role in the success of our students,”
said Bill Mullaney, Ph.D., Bergen’s vice
president of academic affairs.
Bergen is the first New Jersey school –
four- or two-year – to earn the Frank L.
Christ Outstanding Learning Center Award.
Past honorees include Clemson University,
Texas A&M and Dutchess Community
College. Alumna Khairia Fazal, managing
director of learning assistance who has
directed the Cerullo Center since 1994,
accepted the award at the NCLCA’s 29th
annual conference in October in
Albuquerque, NM.
The Cerullo Center hosted more than 40,000
subject-specific and individualized tutoring
visits in 240 courses last year. Approximately
7,000 students relied on a team of 150
professional and peer tutors employed by
the Center to assist them via no-cost oneon-one, walk-in and in-class tutoring.

Alumni Share Experience with Students
Four talented BCC alumni participated in
an Oct. 29 panel sponsored by Phi Theta
Kappa and the Offices of Alumni Affairs as
part of the statewide “Commit to
Complete” initiative geared to focus New
Jersey community college students on
staying in school and obtaining their
degrees. The panel shown here from left
featured 2014 BCC Valedictorian Maria De
Abreu Pineda, a biomedical major at
Stevens Institute of Technology; David
Kawash, senior corporate financial analyst
for TD Bank; Kenneth Clune, an associate
scientist in cellular biology at Firmenich, a
company that produces fragrances and
flavors; and Bergen County Surrogate
Michael R. Dressler.
Mike Dressler, a 1974 graduate of BCC,
told the approximately 90 students who
attended the discussion in TEC on the
Paramus campus the story of his recovery
from a broken neck suffered while diving
into the ocean off Seaside Heights the day
after his senior prom. Left paralyzed and
confined to a wheelchair, Mike went on to
earn a scholarship to FDU; a law degree
from Seton Hall Law School, and a
distinguished life of public service that
included election to the Cresskill Town
Council at age 22 and beating an
incumbent to become mayor at 30.
“The people at Bergen Community College
took me in and did everything they could
for me. They transitioned me from the
hospital back into the real world,” he said.
“If you think you can do something, you can
do it,” he advised the students. “Don’t let
anyone tell you that you can’t accomplish
what you want to accomplish in life.”
David Kawash, another non-traditional
student who worked in the family business
for several years before starting at Bergen,
became Phi Theta Kappa president and
graduated in 1995, earning a Phi Theta
Kappa scholarship to the NYU Stern School
of Business and today is a corporate
financial analyst for TD Bank.
“I got involved at Bergen Community
College and made really good friends who
are still good friends 20 years later,” David
recalled. “NYU took 64 of my credits so I
went into Stern as a junior. I was shoulderto-shoulder to the other students who
already had been there two years.”

joined the Alumni Network.
Alumni Show Appreciation to Former Coach Doug Yennie
His former players came to say thanks.
On Nov. 6, the BCC Department of Athletics,
Basketball Coach Carlos Quinteros and the
Office of Alumni Affairs honored former BCC
Basketball and Golf Coach Doug Yennie at
the men’s basketball game as the Bulldogs
bested Bucks County CC. Doug, a former
Bergen professor, earned a spot in the
NJCAA Men’s Basketball Hall of Fame with
408 wins in 32 seasons at Bergen. He also is
in the NJCAA Men's Golf Hall of Fame.
A Night of Appreciation Draws BCC Alumni
Spanning Five Decades
Athletic Alumni Appreciation Night drew alumni representing
every decade starting in 1976 through 2013 as former Bulldogs
returned to the Main Campus gym in February of 2014 to cheer on
the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams as they took on Ocean
County College. Co-sponsored by the BCC Office of Alumni Affairs,
the Bergen Community College Department of Athletics and the
Office of Student Affairs, Alumni Appreciation Night honored
Bobby Gaeta, a 1985 NJCAA All-American whose two-season 34.4
point-per-game average – with a total of 1,752 points scored as a
Bulldog – still stands as the Division III national record; and
Michaela “Mickey” Hayes, Class of 2011 honors graduate,
basketball and softball star, who led the nation as the Number 1
Division III rebounder averaging more than 19 rebounds per game.
Coach Doug Yennie
The Bulldogs donned T-shirts in the original school colors of
black and yellow and former players going back to 1972 joined
Coach Quinteros and Athletic Director Jorge Hernandez on the
court at halftime to honor Coach Yennie, whose wife Linda and
Alumni Board of Directors member and assistant to the athletic
director Elaine Korinko also participated in the ceremony. “If it
wasn’t for Doug Yennie I never would have gotten my degree and I
never would have become a Division I coach,” said Scott Smith,
Class of ’93 and the assistant men’s basketball coach at Wagner
College in Staten Island.
In addition to his contributions to the College, Doug and Linda
Yennie also inspired the award-winning Pioneer Tour youth golf
program that continues today and has introduced thousands of
young Bergen County golfers to the sport.
