Annual Report - Community Foundation of New Jersey
The New Je rsey Recove ry Fund supported Conse rve Wildlife’s successful (and the first-eve r) restoration
of horseshoe crab habitat along more than a mile of New Je rsey’s Delaware Bay.
FOR NEARLY 35 YEARS, THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF NEW JERSEY HAS
BEEN A TRUSTED PARTNER IN THE STATE, WORKING WITH MORE THAN 1,000
FAMILIES, BUSINESSES, AND FOUNDATIONS TO TURN PRIVATE RESOURCES
INTO CHARITABLE FUNDS THAT BENEFIT CAUSES AND COMMUNITIES
ACROSS THE STATE, REGIONALLY, AND BEYOND.
Day in and day out, we meet generous-spirited people who share their philanthropic interests and goals with
us. We identify worthwhile organizations and dedicated people doing great work, introduce them to each other,
and foster relationships that have profound impact on the quality of life and well-being for so many.
We are often asked how, as a community foundation for the entire state, we can know and serve communities
from the Highlands to Cape May Point. We do so by getting to know who is using creative energy and sheer
determination to transform and enhance local communities, and then connecting them to people who want to
be part of that change. In many ways they are changemakers – both the folks on the ground doing the work, and
those who support them financially and as volunteers and community participants.
On the pages that follow, you’ll read about three initiatives we’ve undertaken in the past year to broaden the
impact that Community Foundation donors can have in the state. Each of these projects – stopping human
trafficking in New Jersey, contributing to the state’s recovery from Hurricane Sandy, and improving conditions
for incarcerated youth – touch many lives and create conditions for systemic change.
These are the kinds of issues we will continue to advance as we enter our 35th year as a community foundation,
in partnership with the inspiring donors who care about creating better, more vibrant communities across New
Jersey.
Thank you for putting your charitable giving to use, and for enabling us to work together to realize our collective
goals for a better New Jersey.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING
We had been monitoring the issue of human trafficking for a long time. When the Super Bowl came to New Jersey in
February 2014, we knew it was the right time to act. Knowing that instances of human trafficking and forced prostitution
spike during major international sporting events, we partnered with the New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking
well before game day and mobilized volunteers and other resources to prevent human trafficking in our state.
The ‘weapon’ of choice was an unlikely one – soap. Hotel bars of soap, to be exact. Our donors were able to purchase
thousands of tiny soaps that had on their wrappers the National Human Trafficking Hotline. Scores of volunteers and
Coalition members then distributed the soaps to hotels and motels in the vicinity of the Meadowlands over the course of
several days that included training sessions to identify the signs of human trafficking. Human trafficking survivor Theresa
Flores, who inspired the soap concept, was on hand and explained to the volunteers that, while a victim, her only time alone
was in the bathroom, and she wished then that she knew the best way to escape her situation – such as a phone number to
call for help.
Fortunately, a major FBI operation was underway at the same time as our efforts and led to the recovery of 16 trafficking
victims, ranging in age from 13 to 17.

SANDY RECOVERY
Since Hurricane Sandy struck New Jersey, the Community Foundation, on behalf of its donors and in partnership with the
Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, supported the philanthropic community in providing leadership to help our state and its
communities respond to the ravages of the storm.
Our three objectives since then have been to identify and highlight overlooked needs in the different communities that were
hurt; work collaboratively across sectors to find and fund catalytic solutions to the recovery challenges we face; and deploy
the needed talent and resources to help our communities recover.
Our Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund has supported efforts ranging from an emergency food program and the re-opening of a
youth crisis shelter closed by the storm to helping replace first responder equipment and supporting local clean-up efforts.
Angela Watts, a membe r of the Australian Shorebird Research Team, and Ben Kohl, a membe r of CFNJ’s
Board of Trustees, count red knot birds as part of the Delaware Bayshore restoration project.
The New Jersey Recovery Fund is a collaborative fund focused on long-term planning and sound recovery. The Fund has
awarded grants to a range of organizations focused on three broad categories: planning and public policies that promote
community resiliency and environmental protection (including deploying recovery managers in several key communities);
engaging and informing the public about recovery decisions; and using the arts to foster individual and community healing
and revitalization in affected communities.

JUVENILE JUSTICE REFORM
Our work with nonprofits across New Jersey and our own on-the-ground research led us to a startling finding: the way
sentences for juvenile offenders are enforced in New Jersey does not always lend itself to proper rehabilitation. Armed with
new awareness of the conditions and lack of services available to the hundreds of young people under the supervision of the
New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission, the CFNJ Leadership Committee deployed a $30,000 grant to the
Post-Disposition Advocacy Project at Rutgers School of Law – Newark. The Project hired an attorney to work with the scores
of incarcerated young people who are isolated from their families and communities and in need of sustained legal
representation.
