Offering you some expert advice
on the tricky decision of whether
or not to have a fringe
Unfortunately for us, fashion seems to be moving so
fast these days that our own hair follicles simply can’t
keep up! Which means that by the time we have
plucked up the courage to recreate the Sienna Miller
style retro crop, a sudden surge in Bardot-esque big
locks is massive on the catwalks again and we find
ourselves feeling distinctly last season before we’ve
even had the chance to debut our new look to our
office colleagues!
Which means we then start the nightmare of trying
to figure out how to grow out our cut gracefully
once again. But don’t despair, this is where a good
stylist comes in.
Your stylist will always know just how to handle your
hair-mares, whether you want your colour toning
down, your layers more choppy or your fringe to
grow out.
This is always a tricky decision: fringe or no fringe?
If you are brave enough to go for the chop and
decide you don’t like it any more or it’s time to move
on, your stylist will know just how to style your fringe
into the rest of your hair so that you can grow it out
gradually and subtly and then you will be able to start
blending it in to the side pieces or layers around your
face.
Whatever the fashion, you must always keep your
hair well conditioned and trimmed, including your
fringe. And let’s face it, by the time you’ve started
growing it out, a sexy long side fringe will probably be
back in fashion again anyway!
“...a great hair cut will always make you look
and feel like a supermodel, so go for it!”
A well-conditioned great hair cut, whatever style you
choose, will always make you look and feel like a
supermodel, so go for it!

Sally Montague to open new salon
Local 'Business Women of the Year' Sally Montague is
set to add yet another salon to her growing empire.
Sally has been in business now for over twenty years
and in that time has amassed a total of four fantastic
five-star salons, including three already in Derby and
one in Belper. In 2004 Sally finally and little sadly
closed her first ever salon on Friargate to hand over
the premises to her brother Matthew for his architect
business. The building was owned by the Montague
family and seemed the logical step as Matthew's
office was already next-door and he needed to
expand.
Since that point, Sally has been looking for the ideal
premises to buy freehold to extend her own everexpanding business. So when these premises became
available it was as if it was meant to be. The premises
we are talking about is 'The Old Hall' better known
locally as 'The Heritage Centre'.
The building is steeped in history having once been a
boys' school amongst other things! It was more
recently renovated in 1975 as a photographers’
before it later became the 'Heritage Centre'. The
architect who was commissioned by the Bishop and
Arch Deacon of Derby to redesign the building was
none other than Derek Joseph Montague himself, a
well-known local architect and Sally's own father who
actually won a civic society award for his work. Sally
says 'I knew as soon as I walked into the place that it
was my dad's work, it was his own distinct and
unmistakeable style, and it just felt so right. I knew I
had to have it, I just had to take a chance and put in
an offer.' Within a week the offer had been accepted
and the rest, as they say, is history!
The new premises will have to be completely
renovated to turn it into a salon but the works will
also have to be contained by stringent guidelines as
the building is protected by a grade 2 listing order, so
thankfully many, if not all, of the original features will
be kept intact and will be used as features within the
design of the new salon adding to the ambiance and
interest for the clients.
The plans are now being made and work is expected
to start very soon and Sally hopes the new salon will
be open towards the end of the autumn..
The salon will be much more of an all-round spa
experience than any of Sally's other salons as they
hope to be able to offer the complete makeover
service incorporating beauticians and nail technicians
as well as hair services to their clients. Sally will be
taking some of her existing team members with her
to the new salon, but will also be hiring some new
members of staff too, including technicians,
experienced stylists and reception staff. So if you
think you have something original and special to offer,
then please get in touch with either head receptionist
Jo or Sally's PA, Sami on 01332 203302 for an
application form and more details.
“...Sally hopes the new salon will be open
towards the end of the autumn.”
More details on the new salon and vacancies will be
made available soon on our website at
www.sallymontague.co.uk.

Sound advice on hair
issues that matter to you.
Each issue we will be helping you out with some useful
hints and tips on how to make the most of your hair, and
in this issue we focus on blow-drying.
Q
Whenever I have my hair blow-dried at a salon, it
always looks great and lasts for ages - but when I
do it myself, it never looks as good and drops out after a
few hours. How can I do it like the professionals?
Bel
A
Make sure that you have the best available tools.
As professionals, we always make sure we have the
best for our clients. Denman brushes (from £3.50) are
great and affordable. Use different brushes for different
styles. For example, if you want volume use a large
round brush, and if you want a sleeker and straighter
style, use a large flat paddle brush.
It is also worth investing in a good hair dryer like the
Babyliss Pro Powerdryer (sold here for just £18.00) or
the ETI 2000 New Generation Turbodryer (available to
buy in the salon for £25.00) which is fast and furious that’s why all our stylists use them here in the salon.
Don’t try to style too much hair at once. Buy some
section clips and pin small areas out of the way while
you dry, as you have probably seen your stylist do many
times in the salon. Always aim the dryer down the hair
and don’t over-use the hottest setting. Give hair a final
30 second blast on the cool setting to set the style and
leave it shiny. Finally, make sure you are using the right
products for the style you want. If you want to create a
sleek, straight and shiny style try using Kérastase Crème
Nutri-Sculpt, Kérastase Vernis Nutri-Sculpt or
Techni.art Gloss Control. If you are trying to achieve
natural hold you should try Kérastase Lait Nutri-Sculpt,
Techni.art Fix Antifrizz or Techni.art Air Fix sprays. And
finally, for short hair, after roughly and messily blowdrying the hair, put a small amount of Techni.art Clay in
your hands and rub together lightly then apply all over
the tips of the hair (careful not to apply too much
product) then use GHD styling irons to style your hair
straight and funky.
If you are unsure of anything then please ask your stylist
for advice as they will be more than happy to help you.
Our Belper salon has undergone a
£100,000 makeover, which includes expanding
into a neighbouring property and increasing the
number of chairs from just 8 to 20!
We will soon be employing a beautician so we
can offer clients a full range of services in the
salon.
The salon stocks the full range of hair care
products including Kérastase and L’Oréal
Professionel, along with a beautiful range of
jewellery and gifts.

These ultra long tresses were seen at the autumn/winter
Nicole Fahri collections, among others. Hair that skims
the bust is incredibly feminine, and with just the front
section pulled back, it can be young and modern too.
Keira and Mischa have both been sporting hair
extensions recently to achieve just this look. So even if
you don’t have the natural assets, you can still achieve
the latest looks! Just ask your stylist for more details on
our new exciting hair extension service from brand
leader ‘Great Lengths’ - now available in both our
Irongate and Belper salons.
This look combines a sexy going
out style with a young and
relaxed feel for that ‘What this?
Takes no time or effort at all!’ look.
To style your locks like this, wash and
condition your hair (be sure to ask your
stylist for the correct products for your hair type) then
use a styling product to encourage natural movement,
like Kérastase Crème Elastocurl (£12.50), or
alternatively try L’Oréal Professionnel Techni.art Hot
Style Constructor (£8.95). You can then either blow
dry your hair or leave it to dry naturally. Next divide
your hair into a centre parting and take two small
sections from the sides, fixing them at the back of your
head with either grips or a pretty hair clip (we have a
great selection of hair accessories in the salon). You can
then pull out a few strands for a more natural and
relaxed feel. To hold the style in place, spray on a little
Kérastase Double Force Spray (£14.00), which will
prevent frizziness. You don’t want this style to look too
precise, so you could try styling it without looking in the
mirror!
All products mentioned in the article are available in all
our salons.

This season’s silhouette is relentlessly feminine all pencil skirts and pretty dresses - but as we are
all too aware, some of us are just not born with J
Lo’s curves.
The solution? A flattering wide belt! If you
haven’t seen your waist for a while, it’s the
perfect way to create the illusion of an hour glass
figure. And, even better, it will draw the
attention away from other annoying lumps and
bumps!
Anything goes - super soft metallic leather is the
choice for La Lopez, while Posh prefers to add
drama to her outfits with a snake shaped belt
slithered around her tiny middle!
So there’s no excuse, we’ve all got a few belts at
the back of our closets, get them out and get up
to the minute!
We have a great selection of belts in the shop so
please feel free to try on ‘til your heart’s content,
- we have something for everyone.

much more than just style!
The Sally Montague Hair team have been working
extremely hard not just creating the latest catwalk
looks on clients but also by contributing a little extra
to the community this year! As many of you will
know, October is Breast Cancer awareness month
and Sally Montague has this deserving cause as her
chosen charity for the salons to support every year
and raise as much money as possible and this year
was no exception. As well as the usual salon antics of
the stylists dressing up in pink, decorating the salon in
pink, pink gifts for sale and the sale of the official
charity badges, wrist bands etc, Sally hosted a charity
ball at Pride Park Stadium. It was a fabulous evening
thanks to all staff members who helped organise the
night, the venue was decorated entirely in pink, with
pink drapes, flowers and balloons all kindly donated
by extremely generous benefactors as well as some
fantastic and original prizes for the charity raffle and
auction. An amazing grand total of £4,300 has been
raised this year for Breast Cancer Research by the
Sally Montague Hair team with the great and
generous efforts of all the staff involved making it
possible.
Following the success of the last, we will be holding
another ball this October. Tickets will be available
from June and we hope to make the night just as
good as the last - and hopefully even better!
