Message from Pat Halpin-Murphy
President & Founder, PA Breast Cancer Coalition
Since 1993 when we founded the PA Breast Cancer
Coalition, breast cancer survivors, medical professionals,
community leaders and government, labor, and industry
leaders have joined us in our efforts.
In this, our 20th year, we are resolute in our commitment
to continue to fund research to find a cure and, until that
cure is found, to be the voice for breast cancer survivors in
Pennsylvania.
Together we have dedicated our lives to the mission of
“finding a cure now … so our daughters won’t have to.” Our
highly acclaimed outreach programs include Friends Like
Me™, our traveling photo exhibit 67 Women, 67 Counties:
Facing Breast Cancer in Pennsylvania, Refunds for Research,
the PA Breast Cancer Coalition Conference, and our FREE online course for nurses, social
workers and breast cancer advocates.
Because of YOUR support, we were able to announce that the PA Breast Cancer Coalition’s
Breast Density Notification Act is now law. With Governor Tom Corbett’s signature, the
bill requires mammography facilities to notify women who have dense breast tissue. Dense
breast tissue increases a woman’s risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer at a later, more
dangerous, less treatable stage. It’s because of women and families across PA standing up
and saying “We need this information” that we were able to get this bill through the Senate
and House and to the Governor for his signature. Thank you for all your hard work!
The PA Breast Cancer Coalition was formed in 1993 by a dedicated, active and effective
group of breast cancer survivors who had one common mission: to find a cure for breast
cancer. Every program, event and campaign is carried out with that goal in mind. Today, the
PBCC is the source of action and information for Pennsylvania women with breast cancer
and their families. On behalf of all women in Pennsylvania, and especially our daughters and
granddaughters, I thank you for all that you do to help us reach that goal.

Dense Breast Notification Act

The PBCC is the voice of change.
In our 20th anniversary year, the PBCC achieved yet another legislative victory for the women of
Pennsylvania. Dense breast tissue appears white on a mammogram, and since cancer also shows
up white on a mammogram, the tissue can mask the cancer. This increases a woman’s risk of being
diagnosed with breast cancer at a much later, more dangerous, less treatable stage. The Dense Breast
Notification Act requires mammography facilities in Pennsylvania to notify women of their breast density.
Governor Corbett signed the bill into law in November 2013. The Dense Breast Notification Act, the
PBCC’s sixth legislative change, will save countless lives.
This victory would not have been possible without the leadership of bill sponsors Senator Robert Mensch
and Representative Karen Boback and all of the work of PBCC advocates throughout Pennsylvania who
contacted their state legislators asking support for this legislation. Thank you for helping the PBCC take
another step forward in finding a cure for breast cancer now...so our daughters won’t have to.

Programs
PA Breast Cancer Coalition Conference
The PBCC is knowledge, and knowledge is
power.
Our 20th anniversary year conference celebrated some
incredible achievements related to breast cancer. Nearly
1,000 attendees learned about inherited genetics, nutrition,
inflammatory breast cancer, dense breast notification and
screening strategies, personalized cancer treatment, and much
more from a wide range of experts in the field.
The $10,000 Potamkin prize was presented to Dr. Dennis
Slamon, world-renowned for discovering the groundbreaking
treatment known as Herceptin. With the support of sponsors
and donors to our scholarship fund, registration fees are never
a barrier for any individual to attend the conference and benefit
from the education, inspiration, and camaraderie.

The Potamkin Award carries a $10,000 stipend
and is presented to an outstanding leader in the
breast cancer community.

World-renowned for discovering the
ground-breaking treatment known as

finding a cure for cancer.
PINK RIBBON
The Pink Ribbon Award is given to individuals
who demonstrate outstanding leadership in
breast cancer research, education, treatment and
advocacy.
Mindy Gray
Mindy Gray is a philanthropist and
activist working to ensure women in the U.S.
receive cutting-edge treatment for both breast
and ovarian cancers.
Jeanne Schmedlen
From day 1 in 1993, Jeanne has worked
tirelessly to promote breast cancer
awareness. As a breast cancer survivor and
PBCC Board Member, Jeanne
has served as an author, activist,
motivator and advocate.
SHINING LIGHT
The Shining Light Award is presented annually for
community grassroots leadership in the field of
breast cancer research, education, outreach and
advocacy.

Steps Against Breast Cancer event raises
thousands of dollars for women and
families in PA.
Programs
Refunds for Research
The PBCC is hope for a cure.
The PBCC was founded 20 years ago with the goal of “finding a cure now … so our daughters won’t
have to” and research is the key to reaching that goal. In 1997 we launched Refunds for Research,
allowing state taxpayers to donate their refund to research for breast and cervical cancer. Every
penny raised through the Refunds for Research campaign goes directly into the hands of promising
researchers working in Pennsylvania to find that cure.
Three grants awarded in 2013 bring the total number of Refunds for Research grants to 71, with over
$3 million going directly into the hands of researchers across Pennsylvania.

Facing Breast Cancer in PA

The PBCC is inspiration.
The first program that the PBCC created 20
years ago was the traveling photo exhibit “67
Women, 67 Counties: Facing Breast Cancer in
Pennsylvania,” featuring pictures and quotes from
at least one woman from each county who has
battled breast cancer. The exhibit kicked off at
the State Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg in 1993
and it has been going strong ever since. This
inspirational exhibit has consistently had a waiting
list of potential host sites.
The PBCC builds committees from local groups
who host the exhibit for ten days in a public forum
to maximize exposure. In 2013, “67 Women, 67
Counties: Facing Breast Cancer in Pennsylvania”
traveled to six communities across the state,
bringing with it its message of courage, hope and
dignity.

Patient Advocacy
The PBCC is a shoulder to lean on.
The PBCC patient advocate provides personal, individual support for breast cancer patients,
guiding them through the maze of complicated issues they are facing. While a breast cancer
diagnosis is the common thread, each person’s situation is unique with questions that might be
difficult to find answers for without a one-on-one conversation. During 2013, over 280 women
spoke with our patient advocate for information about what programs they might qualify for
and how to access them. Each one of them knew at the end of the phone call that they did not
have to face their breast cancer alone.

Friends Like MeTM
The PBCC is support.
Over the past 20 years, the PBCC has listened to women’s concerns and responded. When a woman
hears the words “you have breast cancer,” she has so many questions and we have put the answers
together for her. We gathered all the information a woman newly diagnosed with breast cancer looks
for … what questions to ask her doctor, what to expect next, treatment options available to her, and
then package it all in a bright pink box and ship it directly to her front door. In 2013, the PBCC sent
554 Friends Like MeTM care packages across the state at no charge to the newly-diagnosed woman
or the friend or family member ordering it for her. A remarkable number of Friends Like MeTM care
package recipients respond in our survey with, “Now I know I’m not alone.”

Free Treatment & Full Medical
Coverage Online Course
The PBCC is education.
Today in Pennsylvania, because of the efforts of the PBCC and our grassroots advocates,
uninsured women of low or moderate income who are diagnosed with breast cancer can
get FREE TREATMENT through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Breast and Cervical
Cancer Prevention and Treatment Program (BCCPT). Women who qualify for this coverage
can receive free healthcare, including healthcare for medical needs unrelated to a breast
or cervical cancer diagnosis, throughout their course of treatment for cancer or a precancerous condition of the breast or cervix. But what if a woman who would qualify for
BCCPT couldn’t access the program because her medical team didn’t have the details
about it? The PBCC answered that question with an online course available any time on
our website. Anyone interested in learning about BCCPT can take the course, but nurses
and social workers are given FREE continuing education credits on completion. Over 1,117
patients, survivors, advocates, nurses, and social workers have taken the course.
Insurance Guidebook
Breast Cancer: Covered or Not
The PBCC is information.
The PBCC insurance guidebook “Breast Cancer: Covered or Not” informs the readers about
what insurers are required by law to cover, how to proceed after a claim is denied, and what
employment protections there are. With this book in hand, a woman newly diagnosed with
breast cancer has the tools to guide her to a better understanding of insurance so that she
can concentrate on healing. The book is now in libraries, hospitals, and legislators’ offices
across Pennsylvania and is available for free download on our website.
