Surreal is the creation of Corey Lennox,
an alumnus of the Berklee College of
Music. The idea behind the music has
Ottawa’s Sue Foley and Nashville bluesman Peter Karp create a chemistry that
reminds you of Delaney and Bonnie and
Tedeschi-Trucks. It’s a powerful combination of great songwriting and wonderful
interplay between performers, backed
by a fine rhythm section, to provide that
magical spark you must see to believe. As
described in Vintage Guitar, “Karp and
Foley serve the music and never showboat. They know the song is the thing...
In a world that makes it hard to keep your
spirits high, Karp and Foley appear to be
telling everyone to keep their chin up.”

Indeed, Roland suggests that the main
difference between The Sweet Tea Project
and Collective Soul is in the instrumentation. “At this point in my life, the main
focus will always be in writing the best
songs I can write or co-write with my

show that you won’t forget. The Decatur

Singer/songwriter/performer and multiinstrumentalist, bluesman extraordinaire,
Larry Griffith and his band never fail to

Grant Green Jr. grew up in Detroit in

InterPlay: Movement, Storytelling, Voice
and Community Connection!
Saturday, 1-2 pm
InterPlay is an art form that anyone can do. The simple forms of InterPlay invite participants of all ages and abilities to free the stories, movement and voice within. InterPlay is taught in an incremental and affirming environment where the unique creative expression of each individual
is honored and celebrated. InterPlay invites creativity and connection
(with oneself and others) in a joyful and accessible atmosphere. Come
play! Learn more at interplay.org.
Improvisational Movement Workshop
Saturday, 2:30-3:30 pm
Does your inner mover and shaker want some outside action?
The Dancing Flowers for Peace, a performance troupe of women
over 40, invite you to “dig” into your creativity and discover your
“full bloom” through improvisational dance. Create collaboratively and move authentically, sending a message of beauty and
resilience out into the world. Come share your powers of imagination, creativity, and joy. Create possibilities of peace and transformation. You can dance in bare feet or tennis shoes, but wear
comfortable clothes you can move in.
Moving in Mutuality with Marjorie Pomper
Sunday, 1-1:45 pm
Connect with others and learn to move together while finding
and sharing your unique movement wisdom. This class begins
with a short meditation to connect with yourself and then to con-
nect with the other participants. The class is made up of a series
of explorations that involve moving together and responding to
each other. These explorations are simple and fun so they can be
fulfilling for participants of many different skill levels. They do
not require dance experience and are presented in a very supportive environment.
Creative Movement
Sunday, 2-2:45 pm
Creative Movement is a mix of dance improvisation and dance
theater. The main topic of the class: How to make a dance phrase
using common gestures?
This class is designed to tune participants to the creative process and “break the ice.” Exercises will warm-up bodies and help
to recall the types of moves that a person/dancer can perform.
Then, as individuals and in groups, we’ll work with types of dance
moves and common gestures and share results.

A.K. Bjorn
4-4:15 pm
A.K. brings a wit
and style that’s critically honest of social
norms and black and
white culture. Raised
in the midwest and
developing his comedic style in New York,
he seems to have honed the ability to read
between the lines and present a hilarious
take on relationships, life in the South
and current events. A.K. can been seen in
several of Atlanta’s best known comedy
clubs and college campuses when he’s not
on the road.
Joel Byars
4:30-4:45 pm
Georgia native Joel
Byars has an appetite for comedy
that is fueled by the
quandaries of everyday life. His delivery
provides an emotional roller coaster of
laughter and insight. His unique style has
been developed over years of sharing the
stage with veteran comedians like: Ron
White, Kathleen Madigan, Donnell Rawlings, Louie Anderson, and Margaret Cho.
For Joel, comedy is an outlet to examine
the fine print of life and he will continue
to provide authentic entertainment until
deemed illegal.
Zain Sharif
5-5:15 pm
Zain Sharif began
doing improv comedy in high school
through Dad’s Garage and transitioned
to standup during
his freshman year
at Georgia Tech. He performs comedy
around Atlanta and directs and stars in
weekly sketches uploaded to his Facebook

id high, bid often at the two-day Silent Auction! Rarely does spending
money freely, guilt-free
go hand-in-hand with
a social conscience,
but the Decatur Arts
Festival Silent Auction
provides the opportunity to do exactly that!
You get to wildly bid,
win and spend while helping
the arts to thrive. And you get to take home a
fabulous piece of art, donated by a participating festival artist. So be sure to stop by the Old
Courthouse lawn and check out this year’s incredible art items.
All bidders must sign up for a bid number
in order to bid. It’s easy! Just stop by the Silent
Auction tent and we’ll sign you up. Bidders without numbers will
have their bids canceled.
Winning bidders may pick up their items between 3 and 6 pm
on Sunday, or at the Decatur Arts Alliance/Visitors Center at
113 Clairemont Ave. during the week of May 26-29. Any item not
picked up by May 29 will go to the second highest bidder.

Committee: Maura Mullaney, Diana Estrella, Kalyn Kelly
Hop on your bike, ride it to the festival, and park it
in the bike valet area at North McDonough Street
at the square. It’s free! A valet attendant remains on
duty throughout the event to park and monitor bikes.
When you arrive, look for signs to direct you to the
bike valet area. Then enjoy the festival knowing that
your bike will remain secure.
The bike valet service is sponsored by Bicycle South and the City of Decatur. The Decatur
Arts Festival works with the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition to provide the service. We hope to reduce the event’s impact on traffic congestion and carbon emissions by supporting the bicycle
transportation alternative.

Tears and Curses: A Human
Focus on the Civil War
iew a small portion of our Civil
War collection
and consider the
impact of the war
on a local, intimate
scale. These artifacts
steeped in personal
meaning help you feel
the point of view of an
individual. The title is
from a letter in our collection written by
Private Dewitt C. Morgan to a woman
who may have been a sweetheart. Angry
at the Union forces, he wrote, “They sow
tears and curses – they shall reap infamy
and overthrow.”
Highlights from the Guy
Hayes Collection: Food, Fun &
Fashion in the Modern Era
This exhibit represents a small selection
of black and white photographs from the
Hayes collection and provides a unique
view of food trends, clothing styles and
recreational diversions of the 1950s and
1960s. Guy Hayes was a professional
freelance photographer from 1944 to
1983. He graduated from Clarkston High
School, served in the Navy during World
War II, and settled in Avondale Estates
after the war. He was a regular contributor to The Atlanta Journal, The Atlanta
Constitution and The DeKalb News/Sun.
More than 11,000 of his original negatives were donated to the History Center
in 1984. Although very little documentation accompanied this collection. Hayes’
work included current events or staged
shoots to illustrate stories as requested by
these newspapers. This resulted in a lack
of diversity of the Georgians represented
during these decades. As Georgia was segregated in its public arenas, so too were its
newspapers and their readers.
The Mid-Century Ranch
House: Hip and Historic!
The Ranch House is more than 50 years
old, which makes it eligible for the National Register. They were so frequently
built in DeKalb County that it is easy to
disregard the patterns of history these
houses illustrate.
Visitors to this exhibit will learn why
this house type was so popular and the
reason DeKalb County was the epicenter
of this mid-century construction boom.
40 • Decatur Arts Alliance • decaturartsalliance.org
There are a number of variations found in
the Ranch House, but here you will learn
their major characteristics.
Dairies in DeKalb
Featuring Rosebud the Cow
Explore a brief history of the rise of dairy
farming in DeKalb County in the 20th
century after the boll weevil’s attack on
cotton farming. The one-room exhibit
contains colorful signs, artifacts such as a
route book and milk bottles, and even includes a life-sized replica of Rosebud the
Cow, the famous Mathis Dairy mascot.
