CLOUD, MN PERMIT NO. 2382 Summer Message from Mayor Dave Kleis Welcome to the summer issue of the city newsletter and a brief overview of a few points from my State of the City address. During the past decade, together we as a community have achieved many of our goals and visions for St. Cloud. Let’s continue looking forward to the future and being a part of something GREATER! To view my full State of the City Address, go to the City’s web site: www.ci.stcloud.mn.us. Lights, Camera, Information One of my biggest announcements this past spring was the new street light, camera, and digital sign display going up in downtown St. Cloud. This will increase safety in our downtown area and provide information and wayfinding. fi The new street lights (LED’s) will also be replacing all our current city street lights within the next 22 months. The energy cost savings created by the new system will pay for the implementation of the lighting plan and eliminate cost increases to residents in the future. Friedrich Park Another realization this past spring, following several years of discussion, is the joint approval of a land transaction between the City of St. Cloud and St. Cloud State University. The land exchange consists of three city-owned parcels in exchange for the City receiving the SCSU Friedrich Park property. The George Friedrich Park, located at the end of University Drive Southeast, consists of 51 acres and includes quarries that will be cleaned and used for future swimming. The park will be ideal for families and children to enjoy nature and healthy outdoor play. In preparation of opening the park’s trails in August, we are planning a volunteer improvement project to clean Friedrich Park. We are looking for teams of individuals, businesses, church groups, civic organizations, friends and families--to commit to a morning or afternoon shift to help pick up garbage, clear brush and clean the trails at Friedrich Park. To participate in this clean-up project, please contact my office ffi at 320-255-7201. St. Cloud 101 I also announced a new program that is being developed to help residents understand how local government works. Have you ever wondered what it takes to fight a fire, plow the streets, and deliver fresh water to your tap? What about the inner workings of the city budget, tax rate, and fees? How about all the advisory committees and task forces that help guide the city’s work? We will soon bring you St. Cloud 101 to answer those questions. We encourage our residents to participate and gain a depth of knowledge of city governance, city services and programs, advisory committees, city finances, fi and much more. You’ll meet city staff, ff other participants, neighbors, and learn how to be engaged and make a diff fference in the community. Look forward to more information this fall as the new school year begins. continued on page 4 Summer 2015 Newsletter >3 continued from page 3 History Trolley Tours Since I am an avid fan of St. Cloud’s history, I will be continuing the tradition of offering ff history trolley tours. The trolley has seating for 25 and the tours last about 90-minutes. They are free and open to the public, departing and returning from the City Hall parking lot. The June, July, and August dates are being scheduled. Reservations for upcoming tours can be made by contacting my office ffi (255-7201). Also, as in the past few summers, the trolley will be used to shuttle folks between Clemens Gardens and downtown during the summer months and will also run as part of the “Summertime by George” Wednesday evening concert series. City Budget Update We are beginning to assemble the 2016 Budget. The budget won’t be submitted to the City Council for consideration until early August. However, we will create opportunities for anyone to make comments about the budget before August through my town hall meetings and also an interactive, televised, town hall meeting that will be held on Monday, July 13 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. You can also leave comments on the Budget Input Line: (320) 650-3152 or email [email protected]. Lastly, June is the traditional month in St. Cloud that is filled fi with festivals and activities promising summer fun for families & friends. Check out the various events —some old, like bringing the Liberty Block Party back to downtown St. Cloud, and some new, like SING! St. Cloud—all events & details are listed throughout this newsletter. See you at the parade!! Let’s celebrate Granite City Days June 25 – June 28, 2015!
