V O L U M E 2 6 , I S S U E SEPTEMBER 2013 8 WHEN A WINNER IS A LOSER By Phyllis Elrod I enjoy a good hunt, and I think of myself as a pretty good hunter. But it is the adventure that I love. Since retirement, my husband involves me on these expeditions as his partner. We have climbed the New Zealand Alps for tahr, stalked the elusive mountain zebra in Namibia, patiently sat scanning for deer in Oklahoma and hunted wild hogs in Texas, among other adventures. It’s not often one sees a battle in the wild. One late fall afternoon offered a front row seat to just such a battle. Frequently, the winner of a battle is clearly the winner. But this day, the winner was actually the loser. Let me tell you the story of my eight point buck. This hunt took place on the 4-D Ranch. Our friends, Mr. and Mrs. G. are such great hosts that we look forward to each invitation. These holidays are as much social as they are about hunting. We appreciate the quiet, laid-back ranch life with freedom to enjoy excellent hunting, long walks, long talks and delicious food with old and new friends. This particular day we were warmly welcomed and greeted by our hosts who soon whisked us off to hunt. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Royal Oaks Country Club 7915 Greenville Road, Dallas TX 75231 Cocktails, 6 p.m. – Dinner, 7 p.m. $35, $45 after Sept 16 and for walk-ins As we were escorted to our blinds, I thought about how much I love this part of the hunt. There was an air of mystery awaiting me. Whatever happens, I am always prepared to delight in the beauty all around me. I’m not demanding. I just hope to see something! On this ranch, you might see an exotic axis or sika as well as white-tailed deer, feral hogs, turkey and occasional varmints like bobcats or coyotes. This type of “stand sitting” fits my approach for spending quality time in the outdoors. So, not only did I grab my coat for the cold autumn night, I also quickly snatched a book for reading, watercolors for painting, laptop for writing, and snacks as well as my Seeadler Optik 10 X 42 binocular and my Remington model 722 in a .257 Roberts caliber rifle fitted with an 8X Schmidt & Bender scope. I was totally set for an enjoyable evening looking out the windows of my outpost. After climbing the stairs, I settled into my high stand as Mr. G. drove away with my husband to another hunting area some distance away. I chambered three shells, put the safety on and sat the gun in the corner in readiness for CONTINUED ON PAGE 4 2 D A L L A S S A F A R I C L U B N E W S Letter from the PRESIDENT SEPTEMBER TRADITIONS By John Patterson CAMP TALK PRODUCTION STAFF Ben F. Young, Editor Online Media Luke Clayton, Field Editor Terry Blauwkamp, Reloading Editor Xpressdocs, Art, Production and Printing DSC STAFF S eptember has always been one of my favorite months of the year. Not only do hunting seasons open in earnest across North America, but the weather changes as summer slowly gives way to fall. Around the end of the month, the days start getting a little shorter and cold fronts finally begin to push southward. Something stirs in all of us to make us a little restless. We turn back the pages on cherished memories such as sunflower fields full of doves, trips to the deer lease, and early bugle season for elk. Each of us is filled with anticipation of the experiences that lie ahead of us in the months to come. September is a month when traditions are celebrated, and new ones are made. September also marks the start of a new school year and a tradition that started 31 years ago − DSC’s youth S.A.F.E.T.Y. Extravaganza. This year’s fall event will be held on September 21 at the newly remodeled Greystone Castle in Mingus, Texas − the site of many HIGHLIGHTS in this issue Convention Chair . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5 Reloading . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6 Lobster Boil . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8 Convention Hotel News . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10 DEF News . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 11 Auction Listings . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 14 previous events. The event is one of the signature events held each year by DSC. It is a time when approximately 125 students from local high schools who are participating in DEF’s Outdoor Adventures Education program get a chance to put into practice the lessons they have been taught in the classroom. Students and their parents get to learn field skills, shoot a shotgun, a .22 rifle, a .22 handgun, a muzzleloader, and a bow − some for the first time. This is truly a life changing experience for many of the students and their parents and hopefully the start of a lifelong interest in hunting and outdoor activities. For many DSC members, volunteering at the S.A.F.E.T.Y. events each year is a tradition. It’s an unbelievably satisfying and unique opportunity for our members to mentor and pass along to these young people their knowledge and experience. This is an opportunity that is not to be missed. Regardless of whether you are a new member or just have never gotten around to volunteering for this event, I strongly urge you to sign up and help. Thanks in advance to this year’s veteran tri-chairs Dixie Yeatts, Frank Sweeney and Lucy Blachly along with DEF Coordinator Scot McClure on another exceptional event. I familiarized myself with the surroundings. It was quiet. I noticed the dust covered trees and brush showed the effect of the recent drought. I began thinking about the time on another hunt here on the 4-D Ranch. Just before dusk, some sheep meandered into view. They were so content that they grazed a while, rubbed themselves on the legs of my stand, and several finally settled down for a nap. After snapping some photos, I realized that this flock was becoming both a nuisance and a detriment to my hunting success, so I stepped outside my blind and shooed them away. Back in the present, I was just getting my computer ready to write when I saw movement. Sure enough, a nice six-point buck stepped out of the tree cover from the far side of the field. I put my computer aside and watched. He cautiously walked to the area, oblivious to my presence. He was alone. No other deer were anywhere in view. I sat absorbed in the scene. I was facing into the setting sun which reflected on the shimmering surface of his wellpolished antlers. I watched and photographed the deer and the sunset. 4 D A L L A S S A F A R I C L U B N E W S After a few minutes, I noticed movement to my right in the trees. Another buck ambled into view. This big daddy had an eight-point crown of antlers. As I snapped photos of the newly emerging male, he strode from the shadows into the bright sun now even lower on the horizon. I watched as the newcomer went directly to the other buck. This second buck looked like a better trophy. Taking my rifle off safety, I aimed into the glowing western sky. The light of the bright sunset was too intense. I knew I couldn’t be precise and decided that patience would be the key to success in this dazzling light. So I waited. Then things got more exciting. Instead of joining the first buck in browsing, he snorted a challenge and quickly sprinted straight toward him, and a serious fight broke out! First, the eight-point buck struck his foe vigorously on his skull with the full force of his eight points and the speed of his body. The strength of the blow reverberated through the air. It took my breath away. Again and again they rammed each other. First, they lowered their heads, and bowed their knees. Then, with boundless energy and strength, they rushed straight into the other one’s dropped head. They kept butting each other on the head. Their gyrating feet on the dry ground scattered dust into the air. Over and over, they hurled their bodies toward each other. As their heads and antlers met, the crashing echoes caused me to wince. With each contact, they had begun traveling more to the right until they finally were in the long shadows of the brush and trees nearer my stand and away from the bright sunset. I cautiously moved to the north window of my hiding spot. Not wanting to alert them of my presence, I very slowly slid the pane open. At that point, I took a deep breath to steady my nerves as well as my trembling arms and prepared to fire. However the bucks were not finished with their battle. They rushed again coming together antler to antler. I hesitated to shoot because the bucks were moving so rapidly. I remember thinking that the slighter male was losing and might simply slink away. I feared his opponent was getting the best of him. But no, he continued meeting the test. He stood his ground as the contest continued. The challenger, who was my focus, had his back toward me. I didn’t want to risk a worthless shot so I waited hoping the fight would slow down enough that I could properly aim at my chosen target’s perfect spot. After one more collision, the eight-point spun around in triumph. Now, he was looking directly into my gun sights. At this point, I decided that the battle would now be over one way or the other. Taking another big breath, I slowly squeezed the trigger. My eight point buck jumped into the air before he collapsed on the dry, unyielding earth. The winner went down with a great thud, only quivering slightly. As the big buck lay motionless, I saw in the corner of my eye that the loser had hastily vanished into the brush at the sound of the rifle crack. I had shot the winner and now I was the winner! CT CONVENTION Chair IT'S HAPPENING! By Brock Andreola A t this writing, dove season is just around the corner, and many hunters are buying new licenses, cleaning shotguns, and finalizing travel plans for deer, elk, moose and goat for late fall. But if you are a DSC member, it is also "convention season" − the part of the year when it would be good to have 36 hours a day and when Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays blur into a swift race toward January's move-in at Dallas Convention Center. Believe it or not, Generations is Jan. 9-12, less than five months away! The DSC 100 has met and committees have been shaping up since Aug. 1. If you haven't yet chosen where you are going to work, please do so! There are two ways to go about this (probably two times two times two…). You can talk to your friends in the club. Working alongside someone is a great way to solidify friendships. Or you might have a certain slot of time that you can spend. There are jobs that fit anyone's schedule. Only have Saturday and Sunday of the show? Not a problem! There is a job for you! Taking a week of vacation? Great! We have work for you long before the doors of the show open to the public. Are you an early riser? The action starts long before breakfast if you have the time. The next DSC 100 meeting is Oct. 10, a perfect time to shop for a volunteer spot on any of our 20 or so committees. The point is step up, raise your hand, tell us that you want to join in. We can use all the hands we can get, and remember "many hands make light work!" Another exciting part of "convention season" is seeing the donations pile up. Generations promises to deliver an overwhelming number of auction items − high quality hunts, desirable destinations, amazing artwork and more. Of course, this is exactly what you expect from the DSC show and this year will not disappoint. Be sure to take a look at the auction listings in this issue of Camp Talk. That list isn't complete − there are more to come! The hotels are filling up (and the Omni is sold out!). Book your rooms as soon as possible. If you have already registered for the banquets, or become a table sponsor, thank you! If you haven't, why not call the office or fill out the form on page 21 and email/fax it over. Yes, it's all happening and we don't want anyone to be left out. Please contact the office for more information, or contact me or Mark Kielwasser, my co-chair, if you have suggestions or questions. The only thing to do is test some more combinations, which can get a bit expensive if you are using factory ammo at $20 to $40 a box to shoot 5 or 10 shells. If you reload your own ammo, it is a lot easier. Let’s take my .338 Winchester Magnum as an example. I really had great expectations of it shooting 210-grain Nosler Partitions for an upcoming plains game trip to Namibia, but needless to say, the gun did not care for them very much. After a shooting for a while, I had cleaned the barrel and wanted to shoot a couple of “foulers” before continuing with testing. I had brought along a few 200grain Hornady Spire Points for just that purpose. Lo and behold, it put the first two bullets touching, and out of a clean barrel too. I let it cool off and fired two more. They went right in on top of the first two. Eureka, I may have found it! Now some folks might think the 200-grain Hornady or Speer bullets are a bit on the light side for the .338 6 D A L L A S S A F A R I C L U B N E W S Winchester Magnum, as most folks prefer 210- or 225grain bullets, but at 2,900 fps, they shoot very flat and don’t kick as hard as the heavier bullets do. True, they will not have the penetration of bonded core or partition bullets but they were worth a try. I took them on a Namibian plains game hunt, and they sure did a good job on medium-sized game. My gun just loves 225-grain Federal Classic ammo, so I also took a few of these along too to use gemsbok and red hartebeest. For zebra, I have found the Federal Premium 225-grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws or 225-grain Barnes TTSX ammo to be my favorites. Once upon a time, I had a 7mm Remington Magnum that just refused to shoot anything other than 175-grain flat base bullets. It would not shoot any boat tails (regardless of weight) nor light-weight bullets whatsoever. Therefore, I used 175-grain Bear Claws, Speer Mag Tips, or Hornady Spire Points for many years with wonderful success. How about a new .270 Winchester that I sure wanted to shoot 130-grain bullets for antelope and mule deer? No way − this gun liked 150 grains much better and 140 grains best of all. So of course, I shoot 140-grain Barnes TSX or 150-grain Hornady Spire Points in it exclusively now. Guns are as different as people. Just because your old Remington Pump action .270 Winchester shot 130-grain Remington Core Lokts like a dream does not mean that the new bolt-action you just bought for your grandson will do the same. It may or may not. You might try a few of the 130-grain Core Lokts you have on hand and see what you think. If you think there is room for improvement, try some 130-grain Winchester Power Points or Federal Classic Soft Points. Hornady has just come out with a new line of ammunition called American Whitetail that has their standard flat-base soft-point bullets. My past experience with these bullets shows they will be great on deer. If not these, then try some heavier 140-grain or 150-grain bullets. Somewhere along the line, you will find the right one. Regardless if you are shooting factory loads or reloads, do not get frustrated and just fire one after the other at the target. Shoot three or four shots, then let it cool off completely. To shoot a hot barrel again and again is a good way to ruin it. Also, take your cleaning rod along to the range and run a little solvent and a patch through the bore every 10 rounds. If the bore gets fouled, it will not shoot well no matter how hard you try. All in all, shoot what the rifle shoots best. Odds are if you put the bullet where it belongs, the game will be down and you will soon be taking trophy pictures. Feel free to write Terry anytime for assistance at [email protected]. DSC 100 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED B e sure to save the date for the DSC 100 volunteer meetings. What is this DSC 100, you may ask? The DSC 100 has played a crucial role in the success of our annual convention throughout the years. This army of volunteers began with nearly 100, hence the name. However, over the years, it has grown to 500– 600 volunteers who give 100 percent. Jobs range from bag stuffing to coffee and hospitality service to move-in/move-out and security. You name the job − there is a volunteer involved in it! Why volunteer? You will make new friends, hang out with old ones and have the time of your life. You won’t believe how much fun countless hours of hard work can be until you do! Not available for more than a few hours? That’s ok − join us! There is room for all levels of energy, time and talent. If you are not sure, you can also just show up at a meeting where friendly committee chairs may fight over you. (It’s been known to happen!) Student opinions of the fast-growing Outdoor Adventures education program were collected in a program assessment commissioned by Dallas Ecological Foundation and funded by a grant from Dallas Safari Club. The Outdoor Adventures education program will reach about 16,000 students this year at more than 160 secondary schools that have formally adopted the curriculum. DEF, an education partner with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, developed the curriculum, which aligns with national education standards and is accredited by the State of Texas. Teaching units within the program cover camping, boating, archery, hunter education, shooting sports, orienteering, survival skills and outdoor cooking. Conservation is a theme woven into each of the units. “Survey results definitively and quantitatively support the anecdotal reviews that students, parents and teachers have been sharing with DEF from the beginning. This program introduces young teens to outdoor activities that they enjoy and value,” said Scot McClure, OA coordinator for DEF. He added, “Greater participation and involvement in the outdoors tends to strengthen understanding of − and ultimately stewardship of − wildlife and natural resources. We’re very optimistic that student enthusiasm for OA will translate to a lifetime of good conservation.” McClure added, “The outdoor industry also will be thrilled to learn that the survey indicated marked increases in all types of equipment purchased after participating in the program. After all, OA is not your traditional PE course. Instead of teaching with basketballs and tennis rackets, we use rods and reels and bows and arrows.” Teachers participating in OA receive special training, complete scope and sequence, syllabus, daily lesson plans and cross-curricular opportunities in math, science, writing, technology and other applications, and more. S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 3 11 LAW ENFORCEMENT News GLOBAL WILDLIFE TRAFFICKING BUSTS EXPOSE ILLEGAL INTERNET SALES S cores of wildlife traffickers face federal and state charges for selling protected species online last summer. A coordinated undercover law enforcement operation was led by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and involved officers from 16 states, three federal agencies, and three Asian countries. Operation Wild Web resulted in 154 “buy/busts” in the U.S: 30 involving federal wildlife crimes and 124 for violations of state wildlife laws. It also exposed online trafficking of live birds and tiger and leopard pelts in Southeast Asia, where enforcement agency participation was coordinated by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations-Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN). “Our message is clear and simple: The internet is not an open marketplace for protected species,” said Edward Grace, the Service’s Deputy Assistant Director for Law Enforcement. “State partners and our ASEAN-WEN counterparts were essential to the success of this operation, and that cooperation remains critical to disrupting wildlife trafficking on the Web and elsewhere.” Over a 14-day period running in August of last year, approximately 70 USFWS special agents and conservation officers from state wildlife agencies across the country teamed up to investigate illegal online commerce in wildlife. Agents from the National Park Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration helped staff some of the 14 “taskforce” groups operating in the U.S. Additionally, wildlife officers in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia simultaneously ran their own in-country Operation Wild Web taskforces targeting illegal wildlife internet sales. This coordinated law enforcement operation disrupted internet-based trafficking of wildlife species in violation of the Endangered Species Act and Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), Migratory Bird Treaty Act, state laws, and the laws of other countries. Items being sold (in addition to those shown here) included leopard and jaguar pelts, elephant ivory, sea turtle products, walrus ivory and crocodile parts, as well as live, injurious walking catfish. 12 D A L L A S S A F A R I C L U B N E W S Wildlife and wildlife products seized by service agents during Operation Wild Web included the pelts of big cats such as Sumatran tiger and jaguar; live migratory birds; sea turtle shells and sea turtle skin boots; whale teeth; elephant ivory; migratory bird mounts; walrus ivory; and other items. The intercepted transactions involved more than $60,000-worth of wildlife contraband. Federal laws regulating the sale of wildlife include the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act (which both prohibit any commercialization of protected birds); the Endangered Species Act (which bans the interstate or international sale of listed species and most products made from them); the Marine Mammal Protection Act (which limits the sale of most marine mammal parts and products, other than those crafted by Native Alaskans); and the Lacey Act (which makes it a federal crime to transport wildlife or their products across state boundaries if they have been sourced in violation of state law). Federal prosecutions based on Operation Wild Web have been completed or are being conducted by the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California and other U.S. Attorney Offices throughout the United States. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission played major roles in the taskforce operations in these states. If you know of any suspicious wildlife trafficking or poaching, please contact the Operation Game Thief hotline, 1-800-792-GAME, or visit www.ogttx.com. It is the hunting experience as a whole, that’s what keeps us coming back to those campfires.” — Ivan Carter I t is in the spirit of celebrating that experience and the joy of hunting that leads us to celebrate the trophies taken in the past year. Dallas Safari Club presents awards to its members once a year. As judged by a panel of Dallas Safari Club experts, prizes are awarded for the best trophies by region, size, species and the hunter's age group. To enter, contestants should provide the following: 1. Completed Member Trophy Awards Form for each animal entered. Available on the DSC website under “Awards” from the home page. 2. A field photo, preferably digital, of you with your trophy 3. $30 entry fee for each animal entered 4. A score sheet for each animal entered 5. B&C scores are admissible for North American game The %&"%-*/& for submitting completed entries to the DSC office for the 2014 competition is %&$&.#&3. If the entries are incomplete or not received by the deadline, they will be carried over to next year’s competition. Field photos of you and your trophy will be displayed in the Trophy Award or Membership area during the convention, and winners will be awarded at an upcoming monthly meeting and listed in a subsequent issue of Camp Talk. If you are interested in displaying your actual trophy during the convention, you should contact the chairman of the Wildlife Committee a minimum of one week prior to the convention. We hope more DSC members will participate in this year’s trophy awards so we can celebrate hunting success. CT Complete rules and forms can be found online at www.biggame.org.
