VIKING CRUISE 2016 Popular one-week North Atlantic cruise bound for Iceland and the Faroe Islands 2 TRAVEL LIKE THE VIKINGS Dear reader Our unique Viking Cruise gives you the possibility to see what the Vikings saw just with your own eyes. You will have a one week round trip to the past exploring the North Atlantic ocean, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. You arrive by sea the way they did, the Vikings. Watching the cliffs rise out of the rolling waves. The only difference is that on board Norröna you have all the things they did not have: good food, comfortable beds, entertainment and time to enjoy a leisurely crossing. All you have to do is take it all in, at your own pace, or ours, depending on whether you prefer an organized tour or taking the reins yourself. On the following pages you will find more information about the Viking Cruise including programme, excursions, prices and sailing schedule. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our travel consultants are well travelled in Iceland and the Faroes and would be very happy to assist with any information or guidance you may need. Volcanic eruptions in the Mid Atlantic Ridge, on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, created a mountain which grew above sea level, resulting in an island. So Iceland truly has a volcanic origin. This is illustrated by the presence of picturesque lava fields, craters, volcanoes, table mountains, mountains of pumice and fields of volcanic ash. During the Viking cruise, you get to experience a part of East Iceland. Fantastic sceneries await you and if you join our excursions in Iceland, you get a guided tour to Mývatn and lake Lögurinn. 9 ON THE WAY TO MÝVATN SEYÐISFJØRÐUR THE FAROE ISLANDS The history of the Faroe Islands begins in approximately 625 AD when the first inhabitants, Irish monks, settled the islands. The monks were later evicted by Norwegian Vikings on expedition in the North Atlantic. Around the year 825, the first Norwegian Vikings settled on the islands where, by 900, these first Faroese had formed their own parliament which is now one of the oldest in the world. This parliament (Tingið) was situated at Tinganes where the Faroese parliament still stands today. GJÓGV TINGANES 10 UNTAMED NATURE EXCURSIONS IN ICELAND INCL. BUS AND GUIDE TUESDAY – ICELAND Unique daytrip to Lake Mývatn (duration approx. 10 hours) The road from Seyðisfjörður to the town of Egilsstaðir passes through the 620-metre-high Fjarðarheiði mountain pass, from there it leads down into Jökuldalur valley, before meandering through hilly Jökuldalsheiði heath and cutting across Mývatnsöræfi’s desert-scape. We will make our first stop by Námaskarð to experience its awe-inspiring geothermal activity – pits of bubbling mud and a dark lunar landscape. As we make our way around the lake, we will first pass through the city Reykjahlíð on its north bank, then, on the south bank near Skútustaðir, we will have the chance to take in craters created by old volcanic eruptions. There will also be an opportunity to explore the landscape on foot when we make a stop amongst the looming lava formations known as Dimmuborgir, meaning dark castles. Before heading back, we will make a final stop at Jarðböðin, the lake Mývatn Nature Baths, where a light meal will be served. Entry to the baths is an optional extra. NÁMAFJELL JARÐBÖÐIN 11 WEDNESDAY – ICELAND Bustrip to Lake Lögurinn (duration approx. 5 hours) To reach Lögurinn we must first cross the Fjarðarheiði mountain pass, which at 620 metres above sea level offers a panoramic snapshot of the Fjótsdalshérað area. From there, the route continues along the southeast bank of Lake Lögurinn to our first stop, the Hallormsstaður arboretum, which tells the story of Iceland’s reforestation. Fittingly, we then head through the beautiful Hallormsstaðarskógur, Iceland’s largest forested area, and follow along the lake past the tumbling 120-metre-high waterfall Hengifoss. SNÆFELLSSTOFA Our next stop is Skriðuklaustur – Cultural Centre East Iceland – a near millennium-old manor, turned cloister and finally cultural institute, Gunnarstofnun, dedicated to Gunnar Gunnarsson, one of Iceland’s most renowned 20th century authors. During our stay, a lunch buffet will be served in the charming manor café, Klausturkaffi. This location also boasts a second attraction. Right next to the cultural institute lies Snæfellsstofa, the new Visitors’ Centre built for the Vatnajökull National Park, which is Europe’s largest. Finally, on our way back, we will have about an half hour’s stopover for relaxing or strolling in Egilsstaðir before we head to Seyðisfjörður. SKRIÐUKLAUSTUR 12 NATURAL BEAUTY EXCURSIONS IN THE FAROES INCL. BUS AND GUIDE MONDAY – FAROE ISLANDS Bus tour to historical Kirkjuböur (duration approx. 4 hours) Kirkjuböur is the historical heart of the Faroes. The little village is located on the south west coast of Streymoy and offers a stunning view of the islands Hestur and Koltur. In the Middle Ages it was the Faroese Episcopal See, which made it the country’s spiritual and cultural hub. On this unique excursion we will drive through Tórshavn, quite possibly the world’s smallest capital, and then up across beautiful mountains, past the village Velbastaður clinging to the steep slopes. MAGNUS CATHEDRAL The bus trip will be both scenic and informative. We will visit the enigmatic Magnus Cathedral, built around the year 1300 by Bishop Erlendur, the St. Olaf’s Church and the Kirkjuböargarður estate farmhouse (Roykstovan), a stave house dating back to the turn of the first millennium, said to be the world’s oldest inhabited wooden house. To round off the visit, there will be hot drinks and pastries in the atmospheric Roykstovan. Included in the bus tour is also a guided walk in the old part of Tórshavn. KIRKJUBØARGARÐUR 13 THURSDAY – FAROE ISLANDS Bustrip to romantic Gjógv (duration approx. 4 hours) The village Gjógv is nestled on the outermost north-eastern tip of Eysturoy, the second largest island in the Faroes. On our way East we will cross the bridge connecting the islands Streymoy and Eysturoy, pass the imposing summits of Slættaratindur (882 metres) and Gráfelli (857 metres), the tallest mountains in the archipelago, located between the villages of Eiði and Gjógv. GJÓGV Gjógv is best known for its picturesque scenery dotted with multi-coloured old house built around its vital natural harbour, which lies protected in the gorge that has given the village its name, gjógv means gorge in Faroese. It is a fitting name; the harbour carved by the sea was the village’s lifeline before the arrival of modern roads. This is a very small village – approx. 30 people live in Gjógv nowadays, but it attracts many visitors, both foreigners and locals, who are seduced by its romantic tranquillity. Gjógv is the perfect spot for a leisurly stroll, and we will explore the little village before heading to its charming guesthouse, Gjáargarður, for hot drinks and home-baked pastries.
