Spring 2013 - ipa region 15
From the Desk of the President - AL FEINSTEIN
Hello to all. It was a day in early December, 2011, I found myself going from
Home Depot to Lowes and finally Sears Hardware searching for the ultimate snow
blower. As the predictions of nasty winter weather loomed, calling for more snow
than the winter past, I wanted the biggest and best. Yes, I was sick of shoveling.
Making matters worse were all the teenagers on the block who were also sick of
shoveling! I don't understand it. I used to go from driveway to driveway, shovel in
hand, hoping to pick up and extra 30-50 dollars after a snowfall. It is a shame, that
with inflation, this easily turns into 100-150 dollars today, and it is just as easy to ask
mom and dad, and maybe, just maybe they will get their own driveway shoveled,
barring anything else more important. Anyway, I found this oversize engine, 26 inch
cut, 6 speed snow blower. I get it home, and put it together. I fill it up with gas, run it
to break in the engine and then place it in my garage, facing outward, and ready to
tackle whatever is thrown at me. Well, it is now February 2013, the second snowless
season closes in and my snow blower sits idle. Then, needless to say-we got
walloped! I hope all our members survived the storm of 2013 and had a little bit of
luck like myself buying that wonderful machine.
Woodloch Pines brought together numerous families and friends. We seemed to
have a lot more kids this time and the parents were thrilled with all the children's
facilities and also the excellent babysitting services offered. Food and
accommodations were at their normal excellence. We are tentatively set for January
27, 2014 and are also exploring a Tuesday to Friday trip on Washington's Birthday
week in 2014. Prices will be published in next newsletter. Please feel free to contact
Woodloch Pines for any vacation plans and be sure to mention your "Hero's Club"
membership for discounts of up to 20%.
Our next meeting will be at Lily Flanagan's Pub, 340 Deer Park Ave., Babylon,
and is scheduled for April 18, 2013 at 6 PM. Please see the Hank Klein Scholarship
application in this newsletter if a family member is eligible.
Lastly, PLEASE send us your current e-mailil address so that we can provide
timely updates and information to you.

LAST TWO OPEN MEETINGS
The 2012 "Key West Sunset Celebration"
open meeting at ON THE WATERFRONT got
off to a gray start. As our evening progressed
the skies cleared and we enjoyed a night of
great food, beverage and entertainment. This
meeting attracted a record crowd not seen in
years at a Region 15 event. We thank all our
attendees for making this a very successful
and fun filled night. [See photos in this
newsletter.]

Unfortunately, the restaurant suffered
tremendous damage during Superstorm
Sandy. We are unsure of its future.
Our “Holiday Brunch” open meeting at the
Three Village Inn in Stony Brook was equally
successful. Please come out and join your
friends at our 2013 open meetings-you won't
be disappointed.

FIRST VICE PRESIDENT’S Report
Hope
everyone had a great Holiday Season. Our last
open meeting at the Three Village Inn in Setauket went very
well. We had a large number of members and guests in
attendance and everyone enjoyed the Brunch. The food and
service was excellent. Nice job Mr. President.
Before Sandy, my wife, Susan, and I went on a 14 day
cruise with Retired Detective John Thompson and his wife
Pat. We sailed from Venice, Italy and visited Corfu, Greece Santorini, Greece - Mykonos, Greece - Katakolon (Olympia),
Greece - Koper, Slovenia - Split, Croatia - Dubrovnik, Croatia
- Messina, Italy - Naples, Italy -Rome, Italy. It was spectacular
and the tours were great. Keep in mind a lot of these tours
require a lot of walking on uneven terrain but your Cruise
Consultant will assist you with the right tour to meet your
individual needs.
During our Mykonos visit, in between crowded streets and
dodging small vehicles, I heard a lot of commotion behind me.
A small truck passing by went into the crowd and hit an
elderly woman. I turned and saw the woman on the ground
with people all around her trying to help her. I photographed
the accident scene; however, the truck kept going. JT wrote
the plate number on the palm of his hand and I photographed
it also. EMTs arrived on the scene and were excellent in their
care and treatment of the severely injured woman. She was
later transported by ambulance to a hospital on the Island. The
truck driver returned and John and I did not have to testify
since there were many other witnesses. Hopefully, that woman
had travelers' insurance since her cruise ended that day.
It was great to get back to the USA until Sandy hit. We
were one of the lucky ones along with our sons and their
families, no damage and no loss of electric. My son in
Connecticut ran his house off a generator for a week but also
had no damage. My snow blower, as well as everybody else’s,
got a good workout this winter. Hopefully, no more storms.
Long Island has had enough. Our thoughts are with those who
are still not back home.
I've been home the last six weeks recuperating from a
rotator cuff surgery. Looking forward to playing golf again but
the doc says I have a few more months of physical therapy to
complete. I’m looking forward to seeing everybody at our
Spring Meeting to be held on April 18th at Lily Flanagans Pub
in Babylon Village. Until then,
stay safe and healthy.......
2ND VICE PRESIDENT’S Report
Happy New Year to all. I hope everyone that was affected
by Hurricane Sandy and Blizzard Nemo was able to cope with all of
the issues and challenges that these two storms caused. We wish
everyone a happier and healthier new year with somewhat calmer
and manageable weather.
No matter what the weather, if you’re a college student, a little
extra cash can help. On behalf of the entire IPA Region 15 Board
and its members we invite all of our members to submit a scholarship
application (which you will find in this newsletter) for their college
bound children, dependents and grandchildren. Eligibility criteria are
also included.
My Wife Annette and I look forward to seeing many of you at
the spring open meeting at Lily Flannigan’s April 18, 2013.

NOTES FROM THE EDITOR ….The first thing I need to
attend to is an apology. In the summer 2012 Newsletter the winners
of the scholarships were printed. Due to an editing error on my part
the names of Kenneth & Louis Fasano were interchanged. I’m sure
that Louis had a great time with the error, but I’m not sure about
Ken. The scholarship was won by Louis, son of Kenneth Fasano.
Barbara and I returned, a couple of months ago, from “60 Days
Around the World “. Leaving from Rome we passed through the
Suez Canal and hit a number of interesting places including Egypt,
Dubai, Oman, India and Thailand. One of the highlights for me was a
piracy drill off the coast of Somali. The ship had lookouts on deck
and water cannons mounted along the side. No pirates though.
Speaking of cruises, did you know that Carnival Cruise Lines
gives Veterans ship board credit? Depending on the length of the
cruise the credit ranges from $100 to $250. Carnival Cruise Lines
include Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Norwegian, and
Cunard. To get more information on this great deal you can call any
of those cruise lines. If you really want to build up that ship board
credit you can purchase some Carnival Cruise Lines stock. The
credit is the same as for the veterans and you can get both together.

Aloha from Hawaii. Since November 28th I've been here enjoying the ocean and beautiful
weather. Been staying with #1 daughter and her family; sure keeps me moving and hopefully
staying young. Paying no rent allows me to pay my IPA membership dues on time!
At the end of 2012 we had 609 paid members. As of today 389 members have paid their
dues for 2013. Your membership is what maintains our great Region 15. Membership allows
our region to host the wonderful functions that we have during the year, and gives members the
opportunity to participate in IPA events at a discounted price. Make sure your dues are up-todate to avoid moving into inactive status.
Hope to see you at 6pm in Babylon Village, at Lily Flanagans Pub, on Thursday April
18th for the IPA open meeting.
