Welcome to Agfest 2015
I
t gives me great pleasure to welcome
you to the 33rd Agfest, proudly
presented to you by Rural Youth
Tasmania. We hope that you enjoy your
visit to Agfest and that it’s a memorable
one.
Over the past 10 months the Agfest
team have been working very hard to
bring to you a fabulous three days.
This year we will continue to present
the beef expo area at the top of Main
Street. On North Street you will be very
busy looking at Heritage displays, 4
wheel drive displays and the Agricultural
Demonstration area all of which will have
working displays during the day. In the
top corner of site you will find four large
pavilions with over 100 art and craft
exhibits.
On the opposite side of site you will
find the Unique Tastes Pavilion with over
40 exhibitors with fine food and wine, or
scattered across the site you will find 18
community caterers all fundraising for
their respective groups. If you need to
take the ‘weight off your feet’ head to
central arena where you will find three
days of packed entertainment.
This year we welcome delegates
from all over Australia and New Zealand
to the Association of Agricultural Field
Days Australasia (AAFDA) conference
and tour. We hope that each and every
one of you are able to take something
back to your respective field days.
The Agfest committee is made up
of unpaid volunteers who are members
of Rural Youth Tasmania, aged between
15 and 30, along with the great support
from our small office team. We have
continued our policy of seconding local
community groups to provide manpower
for selected jobs, which is an effective
way in which Agfest can support and
assist these groups to continue with
their excellent work within the local
community.
I would like to take this opportunity
to thank exhibitors and patrons for
supporting Agfest, as well as conveying
my appreciation and respect to members
of the Agfest committee and volunteers.
Without the collective effort from all of
these people, Agfest would not present
as smoothly as it does, thank you.

Association of Agricultural Field Days of Australia (AAFDA) Conference
The Agfest committee is hosting
the Association of Agricultural Field
Days of Australasia (AAFDA) annual
conference. Around 40 visitors from all
over the country have been welcomed
to Quercus Park over the 7th, 8th and
9th May with the annual conference
being held at the University of
Tasmania Newnham campus on Friday
8th of May. The delegates and their
guests will be visiting the Field Days
on Thursday and Saturday focused
on benchmarking best practice and
creating field days that support and
develop business in the rural sector
in Australia. Please make our guests
welcome as they wander around the
Field days. For more information on

In 2014, the Agfest Committee made
a decision to support a charity each
year, by offering a free site at Agfest to
enable them to promote their service
to a concentrated audience. This year
expressions of interest were advertised
and 14 outstanding applications were
received. The committee unanimously
chose ‘The Royal Flying Doctor Service’
as our official charity 2015.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service
(RFDS) takes the finest care to the
furthest corners of Australia.
Using the latest in aviation, medical
and
communications
technology,
the RFDS delivers extensive 24-hour
emergency aeromedical and primary
health care services to those who live,
work and travel throughout Australia.
The
RFDS
is
a
charitable
organisation that was established in
1928 by the Reverend John Flynn and
has grown to become one of the largest
and most comprehensive aeromedical
organisations in the world.
Today, the RFDS attends to more
than 280,000 patients across Australia
every year – that’s one person every two
minutes.
Traditionally recognised for the
provision of the emergency services,
the RFDS has expanded its role to
incorporate a broader range of health
services to rural and remote Australia.
In Tasmania the RFDS works in
partnership with Ambulance Tasmania
to fill the vital role in the delivery of
essential health care services by
supplying the state’s fixed wing airambulance.
The RFDS operates 24 hours a day,
7 days a week and provides Tasmanians
with services which include emergency
trauma evacuations and inter-hospital
transfers to take patients to the
specialist care they need.
The organisation delivers a range
of primary health care services and
community projects for the benefit of all
Tasmanians.
The generosity of our supporters has
enabled the RFDS to purchase specialist
medical equipment and ancillary
aviation equipment for the aircraft
and build patient transfer shelters at
regional airports around the state.
The RFDS also supports the
provision of dental services on Flinders
Island, annual scholarships for medical,
dental and nursing students and
provides philanthropic support to the
Menzies Institute for Medical Research.

What’s on
​ Yamaha Supertank
The Australian Travelling Fishing Show – Yamaha Supertank gives
the spectator a fish’s eye view. Its spectacular 15 metre long and 3
metre high perspex sided giant mobile fish tank harbours natural
habitat and loads of fish. You will see what the fish actually see from
under water without having to get wet!
Michael Cooke will be demonstrating the many different types of
fishing lures on today’s market and will show how the fish react
to them and the different techniques used by many of today’s top
anglers. Demonstrations are done from an aluminum boat with a
Yamaha outboard on the transom giving the illusion of fishing in
the wild. All spectrums of the outdoors will be covered in the talks.
From safety with eyewear and footwear, knife sharpening, and
electronics, to holiday spots. Michael will conduct shows each day
on site 616 in Sixth Avenue.
Mountain Stream Fisheries have kindly donated Tasmanian trout
and salmon for the display.
Stihl Timbersports Australia
Check out the action as Agfest hosts the Tasmanian section of the
STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® championships, giving Tasmanians the
opportunity to participate locally before competing at the Australian
section of the competition. If their strength and accuracy with the
equipment is proven, they will then compete for Australia against
international competitors from all over the world. Visit site S50 in

The Ag Artwear® competition has run for many years at Agfest Field
Days. Something for people to participate in, with opportunities to win
wonderful prizes, while using their skill in arts, craft and imagination by
recycling used or new products that can be found on the farm.

Full Outfit for ages 8-12, 13-16 and 17 yrs + (adult)
Parades will be held each
day in the KAAP pavilion
at advertised times.
Overall Winner Photos will be on display
in the KAAP Pavilion and
the public are invited to
vote for their favourite
outfit. Voting will close at
11.30am on Saturday and
the Parade will take place
12 noon in the Central
Arena.

Beef Expo
​ ocated at the eastern end of Main Street. The Beef Expo will include
L
breed exhibits of Poll Hereford, Dexter, Simmental, Angus and Speckled
Park and will also include exhibits from Merial, Thunderbird Ag, Ezy
Rollover Crush and the Jordan River School Farm. A Helmsman Bull sale
will be held by Roberts livestock - the sale will include pedigree bred
bulls and females from Lachanora Pollherefords, Damalee Simmentals,
Pleasant Vale Angus and Roscrea Speckle Park Stud. The sale will
commence at 1 pm Friday 8th May. Come and visit some of Tasmania’s
premium beef cattle!

Ninth
Enjoy the activities Coles have organised and enjoy some lunch. 100% of
all sales from their BBQ and sample bags, plus 100% of profits from other
activities going to Camp Quality. Sit and have a coffee while the children
participate in activities and entertainment provided just for them.

DairyTas LegenDairy Expo
With plenty to interest both farmers and non-farmers! 2015 brings
several new exhibitor from breeding companies, animal health
suppliers, milk company representatives and other advisory services
such as Tas Herd and DairyTas. For those looking to add to their daily
serve of dairy, the DairyTas LegenDairy Expo will have all manner
of dairy delights, whether it is hot food with a dairy flavour, coffee
and hot chocolate, ice cream, flavoured milk, dairy fruit desserts and
chocolate! For the children there will also be some giveaways. The
DairyTas Expo is LEGENDAIRY!​
KAAP — Kids Agricultural Awareness
Program — Tasnetworks Pavillion E/F
​ AAP the Kelpie is back at the Agfest Field Days. KAAP takes
K
children of all ages on the journey of education providing hands on
experiences and an active timetable of performances. Visit KAAP
for, an educational hands on “farm to plate” journey, craft stations,
activities run by PCYC and the Seedhouse Tasmania Animal
Nursery.
Sheep Dog Trials
​ e Working Sheep Dog Trials are on again at Agfest 2015. Patrons
Th
will see the best Tasmanian sheep dogs in action. The dogs, guided
by their owners, encourage a small number of sheep to move in,
through and over a number of typical farm obstacles. The obstacles
can include ramps, gates and sheep pens. This is all happens under
the watchful eye of the judges who are busy putting scores on paper.
The action runs over the three days of Agfest with 25 dogs working
on both Thursday and Friday. The top 16 dogs then work on Saturday
with the final 6 dogs running for the title of “Agfest Open Sheep Dog
Champion”.
Peter Brock Memorial Four Wheel
Drive Track
This year The Peter Brock Memorial Four Wheel Drive Track is
being managed by 4WD Tasmania. 4WD Tasmania and the Agfest
committee have worked together to bring a jammed packed 3 days
of 4X4 action on the track. The main highlight is safe recovery of a
rolled vehicle using winches and high lift jacks. This will be happening
around 10.30am and 2pm each day. Other demonstrations will be
happening every hour and 4WD Tasmania will be there to answer
any questions you have about 4 wheel Driving. There will also be
non-stop 4WD action on the track with many exhibitors using the
track to show off new products and vehicles.
This year the University of Tasmania is partnering with the Agfest
committee for the first time. It is a wonderful opportunity for the
University to be associated with this world class event as we celebrate
our 125th anniversary in 2015. Look out for our student volunteers
who will be gathering information about your Agfest experience on
behalf of the organisers. A team at the University has also developed
student learning activities that parents and teachers can download
from Agfest’s Kids Agriculture Awareness Program website - www.
agfest.com.au/kaap-competitions.
The University itself will be based in 5th Avenue with a large
exhibition site. Our focus will be on demonstrating exciting
innovations from the University that are making impacts locally,
nationally and internationally. There will also be many hands-on
learning activities and opportunities to talk about future study
options. Come and find out more about the Save the Tasmanian
Devil Project, see Sense-T’s new online Pasture Predictor, engage
with our Health Science students at the Health Stop Tent and much
more. We hope to see you there!
Heritage
Take a step back in time and appreciate the lifestyle and hardships of
our pioneers. Visit the working displays of our pioneering agricultural
industry which includes a working blacksmith, a selection of vintage
machinery from the wool and timber industries, steam engines and
tractors of yesteryear and old time cars. The Heritage area is located
between Sixth & Seventh Avenues, north of North Street.
Tasmanian Rural Youth Past
Member’s Association
Join the Past Members for their annual Agfest Afternoon Tea
Muster from 2pm to 3pm on Thursday, on the Function Centre deck
(or inside if raining).
Established in 2011 for past members of Calf Clubs, Junior Farmers
and Rural Youth to renew old acquaintances, it aims to provide a
forum to network and offer assistance to current Rural Youth, and
Agfest, upon request. Anyone associated with these organisation is
invited to attend. Further information on TRYPMA is available at

TasNetworks Agricultural
Demonstration Arena
Demonstrations will take place throughout the day with various
Agricultural companies showcasing their best products on
the market today, there will also be demonstrations from local
motorcycle companies. Detailed timetable will be displayed outside
the Site Office in Main Street. The TasNetworks Agricultural
Demonstration Arena is located between Second and Fourth
Avenues, north of North Street.

toilet blocks – one at each end of South
Street, one at the northern end of Eighth
Avenue (near craft) and one at the back
of site 127 in First Avenue. A disabled
toilet is located in each block. Two
Portable buildings containing male/
female toilets are located near the south
east corner of the Unique Tastes Pavilion
and the northern end of Sixth Avenue,
next to Heritage.

Handy hint: ID bracelets are being handed
out free of charge at both entrance gates
– write your child’s name and your mobile
phone number (if you have one) and secure
it to your child’s arm. This makes it easy
for us to ring you with good news if you get
separated.

Parcel Parking is located on the corner of Main Street and Second Avenue and is operated by the Summerhill Scout Group. For a small donation, you can leave your parcels in a safe location and continue
your journey around the site in comfort.
