Dear Readers:
Welcome to this edition of the Tradewinds Newsletter. As you know, we’ve been working
behind the scenes to build a new OASIS Center in Old Orcutt. So much has happened
since the LeBard family donated the 5.28 acre parcel to OASIS at the end of 2014. We’ve
redesigned the building’s layout with your feedback, launched a new fundraising
campaign, and we’ve come much closer to finalizing the necessary entitlements from
Santa Barbara County. I will be updating you regularly in the newsletter as we achieve
each coming milestone.
Fundraising campaigns on this scale require a dedicated group of volunteers. Our capital
campaign committee formed in the spring of this year and it’s my honor to introduce them
to you. In alphabetical order: Liz Addamo, Keith and Olivia Bugal, Ed Carcary, Dave
Cross, Joni Gray, Gary Gross, Dr. John and Sharon Henning, Paul Klock, Jerry and
Delores Luis, Dave Michels, Clarissa Nagy, Tim Rooney, Joe Sheaff, Mark Steller, Diane
Alleman-Stevens, and Rick Velasco. The two co-chairs of the capital campaign are Joni
Gray and Delores Luis. OASIS board member, Paul Klock oversees the executive campaign committee where all fundraising decisions are made. If you see any of these people
around, tip your hat to them. I have the privilege of working alongside them and they are
putting their heart and soul into fundraising for the new OASIS Center.
While I’m on the capital campaign subject, I’m excited to announce that OASIS has
partnered with Netzel Grigsby Associates to work alongside our committee to ensure we
reach our goal. They have consulted on a number of successful campaigns across
California and locally in the Santa Maria Valley. Past clients include the new Marian
Regional Medical Center, Allan Hancock College, the Santa Barbara Zoo, and the
American Red Cross. With their experience and track record, OASIS is in great hands.
Last month I announced our search for a new programs coordinator. Those of you who’ve
visited the OASIS the past couple of weeks know just how pleased I am to announce Mrs.
Julie Posada as our new coordinator! Julie has been serving the Santa Maria Valley for
many years as Director of Commercial Services at VTC Enterprises, and she helped to
launch the Visiting Nurse Hospice Care Program of Santa Barbara. She’s also been very
active as the past President of the Kiwanis Club of Santa Maria, and serving on the
Advisory Committee of the Santa Maria Special Olympics. Julie is excited to contribute
her experience and skill set to ensuring our programs meet the needs of you, the members.
Please feel free to come introduce yourself. She’s looking forward to meeting and hearing
from you.
OASIS is building a robust planned giving program for those who believe in our mission,
and want to ensure the organization is still around long after they are gone. One of the
ways members choose to give to us in that capacity is through a bequest. Fellow OASIS
member and Attorney, Joni Gray, has offered a free consultation and discounted services
to anyone interested in adding OASIS to their will or trust. My wife, Kelly, and I owe so
much to this organization. We’ve literally built our lives around it, so it was an easy
decision for us to add OASIS as one of the recipients of our final estate. By doing so we
ensure our work and special memories made here live on with the next generation. I hope
you’ll consider.
Finally, we’ll have a survey for OASIS members available from August through
September. We depend on your honest feedback, so please stop by and fill it out.

possible. The only canned fruits and vegetables used are pineapple, mandarin oranges, and tomato sauce. The breads and pastas are whole grain and the rice we use is
brown. We are dedicated to providing healthy and good tasting foods to our clients. We have quarterly menu conferences at which we take comments from our clients and use
them to make improvements to the seasonal cycles. If you have any input, comments, compliments or suggestions, please give them to your staff contact so that they can bring

RIGHT: Carlos Lesne from
the Natural History Museum
provided information about the
museum and the activities they
provide.
BELOW: Sheri Willebrand
provided a presentation on
Whimsy in the Garden. She
showed many ways to have a
successful garden regardless
of your gardening skills.
Our longtime Librarian, Diane Rudy decided to
retire. As Doug stated, “Even volunteers retire.”
Doug Dougherty along with the Board of
Directors, Staff and Members want to thank her for
the many years of service to OASIS. Diane kept
the library fresh, current and organized. As a
token of our appreciation, Doug presented Diane
with a plaque on July 19th.
Thank you so much Diane!
Last year, I replaced all the windows in my house with those expensive double pane energy efficient kind.
But this week, I got a call from the contractor complaining that his work had been completed a whole year and I had yet to pay for them.
Boy, oh boy, did we go around!
Just because I'm a senior doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid.
So, I proceeded to tell him just what his fast-talking sales guy had told me last year.
He said that in one year, the windows would pay for themselves.
There was silence on the other end of the line, so I just hung up, and he hasn't called back.
Guess he was embarrassed.
While he was visiting, my father asked for the password to our Wi-Fi.
“It’s taped under the modem,” I told him.
After three failed attempts to log on, he asked, “Am I spelling this right?
T-A-P-E-D-U-N-D-E-R-T-H-E-M-O-D-E-M?”
“Poor Old fool,” thought the well-dressed gentleman as he watched an old man fish in a puddle outside a pub. So he invited the old man
inside for a drink. As they sipped their whiskeys, the gentleman thought he’d humor the old man and asked, “So how many have you caught today?”
The old man replied, “You’re the eighth.”
