Out in the garden …
Autumn is here and the growing season is slowing. March is a
major harvesting period. The garden will be laden with crops like
tomatoes, beans, sweetcorn and beetroot, all ready to be picked,
bottled, preserved, and prepared for use over the colder months.
Mushrooms may also start popping up.
Dry and save seeds of tomatoes, cucumbers, melons and beans,
and store them in labelled envelopes ready for sowing in the
spring. Replenish the soil with a new layer of compost.
SPECIAL ATTENTION
•
Carrots – thin rows of carrots to ensure the roots develop
evenly, and to reduce the risk of attack by carrot rust fly.
•
Lettuces – these can easily be grown through the cooler
months; the red-leafed and cos types are the best ones
to grow.
•
Potatoes – dig up main crop potatoes when the tops
begin to die down and wither. Store in sacks in a dry
place with plenty of air movement and away from direct
sunlight.
•
Tomatoes – cut long, leafy stems back to encourage the
fruit that has set on the bottom part of the plant to
develop fully and ripen. It's unlikely that any flower
appearing on the end of these stems will set fruit that will
be able to ripen this season. Immediately remove any
diseased leaves or fruit that may appear, to limit the
spread of the problem.
SOW
•
Beetroot, broccoli, cabbages, carrots, cauliflowers,
celery, lettuces, mesclun, parsley, radishes, rocket,
spinach, silverbeet, coriander.
PLANT
•
Beetroot, broccoli, cabbages, carrots, cauliflowers,
cavolo nero, celery, courgettes, kale, leeks, lettuces,
peas, silverbeet, spinach, coriander, parsley, rosemary,
sage, thyme.
FERTILISE
•
Feed established plants once a month with plant fetilizer.
Some crops, like pumpkins and melons, can be fed
every two weeks.
PROTECT
•
Mildew can be a problem on cucumbers, courgettes and
marrows; watch for this. Lay slug & snail pellets control
to control pests, and spray aphids and whitefly if they are
still a problem. White butterflies and their hungry
caterpillars will be lurking about too; deter them with
derris dust.
HARVEST
•
Beans (all types except broad beans), beetroot, broccoli,
cabbages, capsicums, cauliflowers, celery, chillies,
courgettes, cucumbers, eggplants, lettuce, marrows,
peas, potatoes, sweetcorn, tomatoes.

ORPHANS AID STREET
APPEAL
Is to be held for the second time our lovely Village On this Friday 6th
and Saturday 7th.
Joanne from LiFE Church says “It was very encouraging last year we
received Donations from nearly everyone we approached .”
Orphans Aid International exists to bring relief and care to orphaned
children around the world, but we can’t do it alone.
• Since 2007 we have been funding a feeding and basic medical
programme for children that live in the gutters, pavements and
rubbish piles of Kolkata
• Estimated 18 million children living on the streets in India
• Rat bites, malaria and starvation are everyday hazards
• Medical help and food for over 500 children in 11 slums
• Education and food for children living at the Bhutan border
• Looking to purchase ambulance
• Currently operating 4 schools, with a 5th being built in the north
• This project relies heavily on much needed regular sponsorships
It was started by friends of Mike & Joannes from Invercargill who
visited Romania and just had to respond to the overwhelming needs
there.
Uganda | The Imuka Project
After some years working in the area, 2014 has seen the launch of
the Imuka Family Strengthening project. Our team in Uganda are
working hard to ensure children are kept in families if at all possible,
and are supporting families with all the help they need to keep their
children.
There are over 150 million children without parental care in the world
right now!
It’s a different model than those above – but already has local
community support and is literally saving children’s lives.
It’s time for us to bring change & ensure orphaned children are cared
& provided for. We have projects in Romania, Russia and India.
• Reducing poverty through education
• Strengthening families to prevent abandonment from happening
• Teaching skills for the community to care for their families and
those around them
• Coaching to better hygiene, water conservation and agricultural
growing techniques
• Entrepreneurial business start up skills to provide for themselves
and their families
• Food support, emergency accommodation, medical intervention,
long-term social work
We also provide for extreme needs in New Zealand.
Romania | Romania's Forgotten
Following Ceausescu’s dictatorship, which ended in 1989, the world
saw the plight of thousands of orphaned and neglected Romanian
children. Orphans Aid International became involved in 2004 through
the establishment of ‘Casa Kiwi’. The problems may not be as widely
publicised as in 1989, but the neglect of these children that live in
Romanian hospitals and institutions is still just as real today. In many
ways the need to help is more urgent as many wish to believe the
problem has gone away. Therefore, few resources are being provided
to address the poverty and abandonment of children. The situation
has now extended to the next generation.
• Opened in 2004 with over 60 abandoned children placed in loving
families
• Hundreds helped with surgery, gifts and food
• Casa Kiwi one of only a few foundations facilitating adoptions in
Romania
• Has respect and influence with local Romanian authorities
• This project relies heavily on much needed regular sponsorships
Russia | The Auyshki Centre
We have been working in Kostroma, Russia since 2005, and on
Boxing Day 2009, we had the joy of seeing the centre officially
opened. The Auyshki Centre is providing daily care for more than 20
children. The centre assists children who don't meet the criteria to live
in a state orphanage or who are already part of the orphanage
system. We've also helped hundreds with eye care and glasses, and
hold annual camps for children in extreme need who otherwise would
not have the opportunity.
• Opened in 2005, the Auyshki Centre has an amazing team of 19
volunteer staff, many of them specialists in areas of child
development
The centre partners with and assists:
• Children with disabilities who live at a boarding school
• Children who live in extreme need
• Children whose mothers are in prison
• Children who live in institutions, orphanages and correction centres
• This project relies heavily on much needed regular sponsorships
India | ASHA Neketon
If you have seen the movie Slumdog Millionaire you've seen the face
of the children we serve in Kolkata, India. Since 2007 we have been
funding a food and basic medical programme for children that live in
the gutters, pavements and rubbish piles of Kolkata. These children
are surviving because of practical help given to them via supporters
providing the bare necessities such as rice and plastic sheets to sleep
under. A country with such huge needs, it can seem overwhelming.
New Zealand | Hardship at Home
Since the start of our New Zealand Opshops in 2005 we have been
helping New Zealanders through keeping prices of our basic items
such as bedding and clothing at very low prices and also providing
basic items to families in need.

HANMER SWIMMING CLUB
HANMER SPRINGS CARNIVAL
Hanmer Springs hosted the 5th Swim Carnival of the 2015 season in great
style yet again earning 2nd place for the day’s effort. The weather was
stunning (in the high 20’s), by the time all swimmers had completed their
racing for the day.
There was a great turn out for all age groups from the 8+ yrs thru to the
Masters, so a big thank you to all who participated on home turf. Thank you
this year to Rebecca Long for the organisation of today’s event, we appreciate
it takes time to co-ordinate all parties needed to have a carnival run smoothly.
Thank you also to all people who helped in roles from Marshalling,
Timekeeping, the Scorers, Runners & anyone else who has been overlooked.
Kayne elected “Graeme Abbot for Swimmer of the Day” for this Carnival for
getting in the pool & having to work hard against strong competition in the
Masters group this year! The kids were disappointed not to see their coach
“strut his stuff” in the water this year – maybe next time hey Kayne!!
The relay teams (as always) saw all swimmers giving it their all for their team,
which takes some effort at the end of the day’s racing & they managed to gain
1st & 2nd places again.
Next week, will see us close the season with the Swim Champ Final’s which is
held at Amberley. It is Hanmer’s turn to organise this year’s event which will
mean another big effort from parent’s & children of “Team Hanmer”. For those
children who have been selected to represent their school at the Hurunui Zone
swim sports on Tuesday, we wish them all the best for their races – then rest
up for the final competition at Amberley next Sunday 8th March 10am.

Twilight Netball
The first round of Twilight Netball started last Thursday with 8
teams competing in a very SOCIAL round robin competition. The
teams are definitely mixed abilities and there is a lot of hilarity
coming from both on and off the courts. The local fire brigade boys have turned out in force again this
year along with a pumping sound system and water boys to keep
their team refreshed. The local school teachers are in fine form again this year and 3
new teams joining the competition has thrown some wild cards in
amongst the competition. There are games at 6pm and 7pm on Thursday nights so bring
the family along and enjoy the action! Sausage sizzle and
refreshments available.
