Trekkin’ with the Trolls
e invite you to journey with us to discover the magical and mysterious
creature called a “Troll”. We hope that during this 2010 Nordic Fest, your “trek
with the trolls” is memorable! Trolls are a cornerstone to Scandinavian culture
and folklore. The stories about trolls are rooted in ancient pagan culture as a way to
explain the unexplainables in life. When Christianity descended upon Scandinavia in
the 10th century, the fear and belief in trolls was to be discarded. However, the stories
that “the troll” represents flourish strongly even in today’s modern culture. These funny
and often grotesque creatures from the dark forest night are often associated with evil
deeds and trickery- even in fairy tales. So keep your eyes open and on the look out for
one of these mischievous trolls. We hope that you have fun learning more about one of
Scandinavia’s most prominent cultural icons and traditions!

The long time home of Bert and Grace Porter is the
feature of the 2010 Nordic Fest Medal. The home was
built in 1867 with native Decorah brick by prominent
Decorah merchant D. B. Ellsworth. It was purchased by
Frank Young, Grace Porter’s father, in 1898. Bert and Grace
Porter occupied the home for many years and later gave
the home for preservation as a public museum after Mr.
Porter’s death in 1968. The museum has been maintained
by an independent board of trustees according to Mr.
Porter’s designated plan and is on the National Register
of Historic Places.
The 2010 Medal depicts the frontal view of the elegant
Victorian home and its unique rock wall built and
designed by Mr. Porter from stones and semi-precious
gems obtained from his numerous world travels.
Medals are available again this year in .999 fine silver, gold
plated and antique bronze and can be purchased at the

Ja, vi elsker dette landet
Yes, we love this country
som det stiger frem,
as it rises forth,
furet, vaerbitt, over vannet,
rugged, weathered, above the sea,
med de tusen hjem,
with the thousands of homes.
Elsker, Elsker det og tenker
Love, love it and think
på vår far og mor
of our father and mother
og den saganatt som senker

senker drømme på vår jord.
sends dreams to our earth.

Norwegian Old Tyme Band—The Norwegian Old Tyme Band is based on the
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Band, which was organized by Pastor Paul
Hasvold around 1980 to play for Easter and Christmas services. The band soon
began playing old time dance music for Nordic Fest, and we hope to introduce
a little Dixieland and Ragtime music in our program this year. We have evolved
into a year around schedule, playing for church services, charities and festivals
in northeast Iowa. For Nordic Fest we invite Luther College music students
and other musicians from the Decorah area to help out.
Lee Przybylski— He narrows his eyes as he begins one of his new tricks, which
involves tossing the yo-yo off the string between his legs and catching it again.
The toy jumps off the string and through his legs, then ‘thud.’ The yo-yo hits the
ground. After picking up the hobby a few years ago, Przybylski has mastered
enough tricks that he’s expanding beyond the church basement performance.
He’s advanced to the point where he can’t learn anything new from yo-yoers in
the Cedar Valley, so he’s traveled to the Mall of America in Minnesota to watch
regional competitions and pick up ideas for new tricks. There’s no questioning

his love for the game. He owns 28 yo-yos, and picked up juggling to improve
his hand-eye coordination. He’s even read a book that discusses the similarities
between quantum mechanics and yo-yoing.

NORDIC FEST 2010 HONOREES
2010 Nordic Fest Grand Marshals
Just as Meredith Wilson is famous for his timeless musical “The Music Man”, the Kephart family has been
synonymous with Midwest band programs for 50 years. The Kephart legacy goes back to the 1950 when
Russ Kephart accepted the one-day-a week band job for the Hultquist Music Store in Muscatine. Russ, an
ex-Air Force French horn player, had just graduated from the University of Missouri. For three years Russ
lived in Muscatine and successfully ran the part-time band programs at area schools. He also taught private
music instrumental lessons in Cook’s Music Shop Studio in Muscatine and did instrument repairs for the
store as well.
In 1953, Hultquist’s store in Davenport was purchased by Cook’s Music Shop and Russ, Lynne and their son,
Rusty, came to work in the Davenport area. Shortly thereafter Russ became a district manager for Leblanc
Corporation covering a large Midwest area which included the state of Iowa. He called on music retailers as
well as leading music educators and professional musicians in the Midwest. During this tenure, Russ met
Weston Noble, at that time the head of the music department at Luther College, who suggested he take
over as Varsity band Director at Luther College and also buy the Thurst Kjome Music Store in Decorah. They
investigated the Kjome Store further and eventually worked out a “deal” with Thurst Kjome to buy the store.
On July 1, 1960, the music store in Decorah officially became Kephart’s Music Center.
The legacy and connection of Kephart’s Music Center and Decorah began that July and will be celebrated
with their 50th anniversary this summer. The entire Kephart family, Russ, Lynne, Rusty and Jim, as well as
their families have been connected with Nordic Fest, Luther College and the Decorah area for the past
five decades. Russ and Lynne have supported Nordic Fest during these past decades and Rusty and
his wife, Wendy, have been involved as Nordic Fest board members and strongly supported the Fest’s
entertainment program. Jim and his wife, Ann, have served as directors for their son’s Nordic Dancer group
from 2004-2013 and are planning to serve as the director of the Junior Dancers which began in 2009 and
will continue until 2018. Jim was a Nordic Fest himself form 1973-1982.
The headline of the paper could read “Kephart’s Music Center & Its Families Support Nordic Fest for the Past
50 Years”, but the truth is Russ, Lynne, Rusty, Wendy, Jim and Ann, and their families, have supported the
Fest and the greater Decorah area. It seems appropriate that the “Music Man“ of Decorah, Russ Kephart,
and his extended families were selected as the 2010 Nordic Fest Grand Marshals!

2010 Nordic Fest Flag Recipient
Ever since returning to Decorah in 1999, after a rather extensive
search for where they wanted to live, Sharon and Douglas “Dag”
Rossman have been actively involved in many aspects of Nordic
culture both in Decorah and beyond.
Both are native to Wisconsin, Sharon form Milwaukee and Dag from
Waukesha. Each of them pursued a separate career in education.
Sharon worked in special education and Dag worked as a university
biologist at Louisiana State University, specializing in herpetology.
Each married and raised a family.
Dag has had a life-long interest in myths and legends and the role
they play in preserving and transmitting cultural values. Since 1980
he has focused on the ancient tales of Scandinavia, telling and
writing these stories for a wide range of enraptured audiences. He
first visited Decorah in 1985, primarily because of the resources at
Vesterheim. Former Vesterheim curator and director Darrel Henning
“recruited” Dag who then wrote a letter to Dr. Marion Nelson. Nelson
in turn responded by inviting Dag to take part in Nordic Fest by
telling these stories. He has been telling these tales at Nordic Fest
ever since 1989 under the sponsorship of Vesterheim.
Doug and Sharon met in July 985 at Masse More (“A Lot of Fun”), a camp operated in District 5 of the Sons
of Norway near Eau Claire, WI. The Rossmans recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. Together
they have one daughter, three sons and four grandchildren.
Upon their move to Decorah, Dag and Sharon promptly developed a temporary exhibit at Vesterheim
entitled “Echoes of Odin: Norse Mythology in Scandinavia and America.” They co-authored a book, “Valhalla
in America: Norse Myths in Wood at Rock Island State Park,” published in 1999. Four other books on Norse
mythology have since been published from 2000-2009. Sharon often illustrates Dag’s writings.
The Rossmans are the first of their families to live in Iowa, choosing Decorah because of Vesterheim. Luther
College and the beauty of the “driftless area” of Northeast Iowa. They are active in the Sons of Norway,
having both served in various positions, including President. Sharon volunteers at Vesterheim as a guide in
the outdoor division, and with school children on their trips to the museum. IN addition she volunteers at
the Decorah Public Library , RSVP and “Decorah Roads”
They proposed the theme “Northern deLights” for the 2009 Nordic Fest and helped coordinate activities
related to the Sámi culture of Northern Scandinavia for that year’s fest. For their contributions to
Vesterheim, Nordic Fest and the Decorah community, Sharon and Douglas Rossman are worthy recipients
of the Nordic Fest Flag for 2010.
