Beverage Garden Entertainment—There will be a $5.00 cover for Beverage Garden entertainment Friday and
Saturday evenings. Buy your wristband Friday night and leave it on for admittance Saturday night!
Downtown Transportation
DECORAH TROLLEY­—The trolley will offer six pick up locations throughout downtown
Decorah and will run a continuous loop. Friday and Saturday noon - 5:00 p.m. Specific
locations are pinpointed on the fest map.
FREE PARKING SHUTTLE—
Luther College will offer a free van shuttle to and from Luther’s central campus
to allow fest goers convenient parking at any campus parking lot. Van shuttles run Friday and Saturday
from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. Downtown pick up/drop off location is near Vesterheim on Water Street and the
Luther pick up/drop off location is in front of Dahl Centennial Union on campus.
HOTEL TRANSPORTATION—
Provided by EARL
To ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of Nordic Fest, the use of bicycles, skateboards, scooters, roller skates and roller
blades, snap and pop or firework devices are prohibited in designated Fest areas. Dogs and other pets must be on
leashes, and Decorah’s Animal Waste Ordinance will be enforced. All golf carts must be licensed official Nordic Fest
vehicle. No other carts are allowed in official Nordic Fest areas. —Thank you in advance for your cooperation

For the 50th Nordic Fest the annual tradition of
Nordic Fest Medallions will again be available for
purchase. Medals are available in .999 fine silver,
gold plated and antique bronze while supplies
last. The 2016 medal features the Nordic Fest
“Rock Throw” which is held each year during the
Fest. Medals may be purchased during the Fest at
the Nordic Fest Medals booth located at the corner
of Water St. and Court St. or by mail at: Nordic Fest

Nordic Fest 2016 Honorees­
A
s Nordic Fest celebrates its 50th year it seems
fitting that the people who receive the greatest
honor bestowed during the Fest are the people
who have made the Fest what it is and those who
have kept the Fest going strong for five decades.
The Grand Marshal title is bestowed on a person or group
who has in some way given to our community. This year’s
recipients are those who both founded and continued the
time honored tradition of Nordic Fest. The original founders
of Nordic Fest were Decorah Jaycees, Vesterheim, Gary
Svenson, Jerry Aulwes, Harry Olson, Mike Dahly, Darrell
Pierce, Marion Nelson and Phyllis Leseth. This team set two
goals for their Nordic Fest: celebrating all the wonderful
community spirit of Decorah as well as Decorah’s Norwegian

heritage centered around a non-commercial festival. It is
their efforts that began the area’s largest community festival
that draws people from all over the world. However, their efforts had to be passed along to others. For fifty years, volunteers have stepped forward to
serve on the board and in the important leadership role of Board President. They have continued the vision and tradition of the Fest and kept it thriving
all of this time. It is in these efforts that we recognize all of these individuals living and passed as this year’s Grand Marshal.
The honor of Flag Recipient is given to someone who has done a lot for Nordic Fest. For the past 50 years, this has not been a celebration put on by just
a few people, but thousands of community members who give their time,
energy and talent to the Fest. These community members have prepared
food, served church dinners, staffed food booths, set-up, cleaned up and
participated in the Fest itself. It is through these efforts that the vision to be
a celebration of Decorah’s community spirit that the Fest has continued all of
this time. It is through the effort of everyone here who welcomes these guests
from all over the world for their time in this community. It is also the reason
that the honor of this year’s Flag Recipient goes to all of you. Thank you for
being a part of Nordic Fest then, now and into the future.

THURSDAY LOCAL APPRECIATION NIGHT—Join us after opening ceremonies
from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. for an energizing performance by Absolute Hoot. Free
gate, local brews and wines available for sale, and a celebration of this year’s FLAG
RECIPIENT…THE COMMUNITY OF DECORAH will take place thanking all past and
present community members for their support of festing for fifty years!
Absolute Hoot (Thursday 8:00 p.m.)—A serious passion for music, some
seriously talented musicians and one, big, not-so-serious band personality makes
Absolute Hoot an absolute must-see!
TIME MACHINE (Friday 8:00 p.m.)—Time Machine
is a high-energy “Tribute” project like you’ve never
seen before. Playing four sets per night, each set is
a different genre of music. It’s basically four tribute
bands in one night! The evening will consist of
danceable “Classic & Current Country” (Whiskey River)
- “70’s Disco” (Night Fever) - “80’s Pop” (Pop Starz) - and music
from the top “80’s Hair Bands” (Hair Force).
CHRIS AVEY AND JENI GROUWS (Saturday 7:00 p.m.)—This
Midwestern acoustic duo met at a blues jam in the Quad Cities a
year ago and they’ve been having a blast ever since! Chris Avey
and Jeni Grouws play blues, country, and old, new & indie rock
featuring songs you know and originals you’ll love!
ANTHONY GOMES (Saturday 9:00 p.m.)—“A very talented
guitarist...and where did that voice come from?” - B.B, King The
Toronto singer/songwriter/guitarist, Anthony Gomes, has
been creating virtuosic, burning blues since his recorded
debut in 1998. Twelve releases and numerous awards
and ecstatic accolades later, the aptly-named, riff-laden
Electric Field Holler crackles with his bare wires passion.
Anthony Gomes sings and plays with integrity and deeply
felt emotion oblivious to fortune and fashion. The resulting
music is a blazing cathartic experience radiating therapeutic
heat for body and soul.
2Tall4U—Each standing 6’ 6” tall, Kurt Bearinger and Jake Doty are 2Tall4U. They have
been playing music together since meeting at Luther College in 2011. They play a wide
variety of music including country, acoustic rock, and your favorite hits from the 80s, 90s,
and early 2000s.
ACE JONES— Solo acoustic act performing originals and current covers from Cedar
Rapids, IA.
AMERICAN STANDARD—American Standard is a high energy, good time rock and roll
band that covers music from the 60s to current while putting some of their spin on the
classics. American Standard’s members have decades of experience and have opened for
Static X, Psychostick, Quiet Riot, and Firehouse.
BALLOONS BY KEVIN—Balloons by Kevin is the Midwest’s premier balloon artist
providing twisting entertainment, balloon arches, storefront/event decor, custom photo
ops, deliveries, balloon drops and releases, and much more for 100s of events. I am
incredibly grateful for a job I love and to make memories for individuals and families and
to help people discover their inner child.
Bunad Show—Scandinavian Folk Costume show featuring a beautiful collection of
authentic Norwegian costumes located at the Hotel Winneshiek in the air conditioned
Steyer Opera House.
CBB JAZZ COMBO—Members of the Chatfield Brass
Band formed this group in 2011 and decided to bring
some “jazzy” swing tunes to venues around the area.
They do “classic big band music”, thus the name CBB
Jazz Combo, which includes some blues and bebop.
It’s an easy going, fun group of guys who have been
playing music for many years and find the variety of jazz
standards and improvising fun and challenging.
DECORAH DRUMLINE—Middle school, high school and alumni drumline members will
perform along with some large and small group pieces from the past year.

ERIK SESSIONS AND JOHN GOODIN—Erik Sessions (violin)
and John Goodin (mandolin & guitar) regularly perform
together in a variety of settings, most notably with the
nationally known folk dance band Contratopia. In the Decorah
area they frequently perform as a duo at weddings, social
events and concerts. Erik & John enjoy playing a mixture
of fiddle music from various traditions and, in addition to
American, Celtic and original fiddle tunes, they will
feature of number of Scandinavian and ScandinavianAmerican tunes at this year’s Nordic Fest.
EULENSPIEGEL PUPPETS—Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre
is Midwestern company organized to promote the
art of puppetry by producing and presenting highquality performances and workshops. The company
is committed to educating the public about the arts,
serving as a center for the exchange of ideas, and
enhancing the quality of community life.
FOOT-NOTES—What can we say after last year’s
schottische with 1,881 confirmed dancers?
Foot-Notes celebrates Nordic Fest with a big ol’
community street dance both Friday and Saturday
nights, including waltz, polka, schottische and twosteps. Playing traditional dance tunes on fiddle,
guitar, mandolin, and bass, Foot-Notes have been
entertainers at Nordic Fest for 25 years.
GOOD FRIENDS­­—Toe tapping bluegrass and
classic country that brings back memories.
GRASS RUN BAND—From La Crosse, WI
and Calmar, IA, these 4 friends easily share
vocals and rotate among traditional acoustic
instruments, including: a couple of guitars, a
resophonic guitar or “dobro”, a fiddle, a banjo, a
doghouse bass, 3 mandolins, an autoharp, and a
mountain dulcimer!
HELEN JOHNSON—Helen Johnson is a local singer-songwriter who
will be a senior at Decorah High School this fall. She sings a variety of
covers, from popular songs to musicals and everything in between.
She also writes her own original music and lyrics on piano and guitar.
THE HOMESTEAD ACT­—The Homestead Act specializes in taking true
tales from history - full of depravity, folly, and vice - and presenting
them as melodies for inspiration, amusement, and occasional
learning. The Decorah duo of teacher Michelle Lynn and
historical restoration artisan Adam Ptacek enjoy playing music
throughout the summer and welcome occasional talented
guests.
JASON HUNEKE—Jason has performed his “G” rated Comedy
Juggling Show in over 1,000 cities all over the country. He
is a headliner on Carnival Cruise Lines, and has entertained
companies such as Harley Davidson, Disney, Bayer, Pfizer,
Hormel and Purina. Over the past 10 years of Jason’s career,
he has had the privilege of meeting and performing at events
with The Newsboys, Switchfoot, Jars of Clay, LeAnn Rimes, Kat
DeLuna, Joe Nichols, Wynonna Judd, and many others. You
may have seen a clip of his Michael Jackson Dance Routine on
America’s Got Talent in 2008, but Jason’s original comedy and
juggling are what set his act apart.
JIM BUSTA BAND WITH MOLLIE B—The Jim Busta Band has
been performing for over 35-years. Their music is a mix of polkas,
waltzes, and other two-step numbers featuring many vocals with
lead singers Mollie B and Chad Busta. Mollie B, Jim’s daughter, is
nationally known in the polka world and has her own televison
show on RFD-TV, “The Mollie B Polka Party.” She also performs in Branson, Missouri - “The
Mollie B Christmas Special.” The Jim Busta Band has produced six recordings, and several
DVD’s.
KYLE AND DAVE—Performing an eclectic blend of traditional and modern Norwegian
folk music, making them Nordic Fest favorites for nearly two decades. They are also
regulars on the Midwest festival circuit, performing this year for Chicago’s Norwegian
National League Syttende Mai Parade, and for the Scandinavian Park Festival September
11 in South Elgin, Illinois.
About the Entertainers
Luren Singers—The oldest Norwegian-American
male chorus in continuous existence in the US singing
Norwegian national songs and popular American
repetoire.
MILES ADAMS BAND—The Miles Adams Band plays a
variety of musical styles and is a very dance-able band.
They set out to make the audience have fun. No one
goes away grumpy.
Nordic Dancers—A unique group of folk dancers
that help us remember the traditional folk dances of
Scandinavia. The Nordic Dancers consist of two groups
of area students; the Junior Nordic Dancers and the
Senior Nordic Dancers and are accompanied by the
Nordic Dancers Orchestra.
THE OK FACTOR—The OK Factor is a progressive
folk duo comprised of Olivia Diercks on cello and Karla
Dietmeyer on violin. Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota,
The OK Factor writes original music influenced by various
genres and styles, and performs and conducts educational
workshops primarily across the Midwest. Though they
are both classically trained musicians, their passion lies in
stretching the limits of their instruments, and encouraging
others to do so, as well. They are excited to announce the
release of their fourth studio album, “That’s Enough of That”, to
be released in August 2016.
OLE & LENA’S 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY AND VOW
RENEWAL—Lena saw a couple renew their vows on Dr. Phil
and immediately decides that’s what she and Ole are going
to do for their 50th wedding anniversary. But the only thing
on Ole’s mind these days is the Lodge’s upcoming ice fishing
tournament, and how he and his neighbor, Sven, are going
to win the “whole deal.” Will Lena get Ole to the altar to renew
his vows? Will Ole talk Sven into getting him out of having
to go through with the ceremony so they can both fish in
the tournament? Find out in this wonderfully warm hearted
comedy about love, marriage, family and growing old together.
For over 15 years the Ole & Lena Theater Company as been
making people laugh across the upper Midwest with anyone of
their seven original interactive two-act plays. Written by Mike
and Julie Bateson, this creative husband and wife team truly
bring Ole & Lena to life.
RIVERBEND DUTCHMEN—Formed in 2009, Kris and the
Riverbend Dutchmen blend an up-tempo beat with
traditional Dutchmen style polka music made famous
by so many of the great Dutchmen bands from
Minnesota and Wisconsin. Bandleader Kris Keltgen has
been performing old-time music since the age of four
and has played with numerous bands over the years.
The band plays regularly at ballrooms, fairs and festivals
across the upper-Midwest. The band has had numerous
nation- wide television appearances and their music can be heard on radio stations with
polka programming across North America.
RIVER DAYS—Four readers and two musicians, tell the firsthand story of early settlers,
commercial fishermen, and towboat captains on the Mississippi based on the book of
the same name that’s sold over 2,000 copies.
ROCHESTER AREA ACCORDION BAND—
The Rochester Area Accordion Band brings
“Freshly Squeezed Music” to Nordic Fest! The
Band has been active since 1998 with the
14 accordionists playing a variety of music
from old popular songs, classical, sing-along,
the usually expected polkas, and many
Scandinavian favorites.
Square Dancers with Les LaLone, caller—Dancers from Iowa, Wisconsin and
Minnesota will be doing modern western square dancing as well as some line and round
dancing.
THE SILOS— The Silos are a group of four Luther College alumni, featuring Dave
Swenson, Austin Swenson, Jake Doty, and Kurt Bearinger. They are an energetic group,
playing your favorite classics from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. They are looking forward to
being back in the town of their alma mater to play music!
STEVE BELAY AND FRIENDS—Steve Belay is a singer
and guitarist who came to Decorah for the camping
and canoeing and never left. More comfortable
leading songs around a campfire than standing in the
spotlight, he will entertain you with songs that you
thought you may have forgotten but find that you still
know by heart. Clapping, swaying and singing along
are strongly encouraged. He is usually joined by some
very talented friends who will amaze you with their
vocal magic!
Stix of Fury—Stix of Fury is a private
drumline and color guard made up of
students in 6th through 12th grade within
the Blooming Prairie School District. It is
a non-profit organization put together to
teach students discipline and responsibility
while allowing them to show their talents
in the field of percussion. The drumline
and color guard perform at many events
throughout the summer allowing students
the opportunity to be a part of something they can remember and cherish for a
limetime.
THE TROLLERI PLAYERS—*Trolleri* - is Nordic for “Magical Fun.” The Trolleri Players”
are the dynamic combination of performers David Braddock and Josette Antomarchi.
The Trolleri’s have worked their high-energy, interactive brand of Nordic Magic at the
American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, The Hjemkomst festival of Fargo/Moorhead &
The Norsk Høstfest of Minot as well as countless schools and culture clubs in Minnesota
and North Dakota.
VIDAR SKREDE AND RANDY GOSA— Vidar Skrede, originally from Rogaland in Norway,
performs with guitarist Randy Gosa of Milwaukee. Both are accomplished traditional
musicians. They present Norwegian and Scandinavian music centered around the
Norwegian Hardanger fiddle.
THE VON TREWIN FAMILY SINGERS—Trewin family children providing an array of
musical fusion that fits the theme of the Nostalgic Nordic summer nights. We are
musicians molded by Decorah’s community and programs. We hope to distribute the
very same happiness and joy we experience during our performance to the people of
the audience!

Oneota Film Festival Presents—A Film from Norway and our own Driftless: A
Film About Decorah, By Decorah. The Oneota
Film Festival brings together hundreds of film
enthusiasts in scenic Northeast Iowa to enjoy
award-winning films.
Skjaldborg—This group from Elk Horn, Ia.,
will present their Viking encampment and will
entertain throughout the day with full Viking
combat demonstrations. Skjaldborg means
“fortress of shields.”
Quilts of Valor
A national program that presents quilts in patriotic colors
and designs to American Veterans. Quilts of Valor will be presented to local veterans at
2:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday during Nordic Fest.
The presentations are open to the public and
will take place in the Middle School Gym.

Sporting Events
The Ultimate Norseman Competition—Athletics play an important role in the
Scandinavian cultures. Strength, stamina and a strong stomach are all traits of the gods.
Festers who participate in the three Saturday events of the Elvelopet 15k run, Rock Throw,
and the famed Lutefisk eating contest will have their results combined to face off with
other Ultimate Norseman! The top Ole (men’s) and Lena(women’s) division winners will
receive a custom Grizzly Cooler!
Elveløpet—The River Run, 5K walk/run, 15K run starts at 7:30
a.m. Saturday. • 5k - $30 - ($35 late registration) • 15k - $35 - ($45
late registration) • 13 and under $25 - ($35 late registration). Early
Registration ends at Noon on Friday, July 29th. Late registration accepted
Friday 6:00-9:00 p.m., City Hall and Saturday 6:30-7:00 a.m.
Beverage Garden.
Kanoløpet—Sign up for some fun along the beautiful Upper
Iowa River. The Kaneløpet is a canoe race from OFF The Driftless, 2012 Pulpit Rock Road
to the Twin Bridges located on 5th Street. The race will have two divisions determined by
the combined ages of the participants in each canoe. For canoes with a combined age
of participants (2/canoe max) 35 and under will be in the youth division, while 36 and
up will compete in the adult division. The first canoe to pass under the Twin Bridges will
be declared the winner. The race will begin at 6:30 p.m on Friday. Registrations may be
completed at the Chamber of Commerce and must be completed by 5:00 p.m on Friday.
Cost is $30 per person and includes canoe, life jackets and paddles. Those who provide
their own canoe may enter for $20.
Lutefisk Eating Contest—At the Courthouse Square, Saturday 3:00
p.m. Put your lutefisk eating skills to the test in this competition. No
registration or fee just show up ready to down that lutefisk.
Nordic Rock Throw—Saturday 1:00 p.m., Decorah Middle School
field. There are 3 weight classes for men (50 lb. rock for up to 160 lbs.;
75 lb. rock for 161-210 lbs.; 100 lb. rock for over 210 lbs.) and 1 weight
class for women (50 lb. rock for all weights). Must be at least 18 years
of age. Entry fee: $2.00. 400 block of River St. next to Decorah Middle
School.
Molkky—A yard game that involves throwing a wooden baton at pins to accumulate
points. The rules of the game are simple and anyone of any ability or age can play.
Finland has a large Molkky following with many clubs and tournaments, along with the
world championships. Demonstrations will start at 3:00 p.m., Friday and tournament at
5:00 p.m., Friday. Tournament is open to anyone from ages 8 to 80. Entrants can confirm

Floorball Demonstration— Floorball is a fast-paced sport officially played with five
field players and a goalkeeper on each side. It has similarities with both field and ice
hockey, but also with basketball. It is played with a carbon composite stick with a plastic
blade and a plastic hollow ball, with holes. Floorball is a versatile sport, where a lot of
action and changing situations occur in a split of a second. It has a low entry level, since
it can be played in any size sports venue, you just need to alter the number of players to
accommodate the available space. It is the true sport of today, being played in over 75
countries worldwide and it is quickly becoming the sport of tomorrow.

1. Dean and Lois Humpal, 404 Vernon Street, Decorah- Being
located on the bank of a small stream gave this couple the
opportunity to develop a unique perennial display garden.
Directions: From the courthouse go south on Winnebago Street.
Turn right on Vernon Street and continue west on this one-way
just past the Decorah Middle School.
2. Stan and Elaine Fox, 2274 Prairie View Road, Decorah- These
Master Gardeners moved to the country 12 years ago and now
grow almost everything on their acreage. Directions: From
the Intersection of Highways 52 & 9, take Highway 52 south 2.6
miles. Turn right on Prairie View Road to the second house on
the right.
3. Steve and Sara Luse, 508 Iowa Ave., Decorah- These
innovative volunteers with Decorah Urban Gardens have
converted their entire front yard and part of their back yard
into highly productive vegetable gardens augmented with a
variety of flowers. Directions: From College Drive across from
Pizza Ranch go 5 ½ blocks west on Iowa Avenue.
Friday Morning Butterfly Garden Walk: 7:00-9:00 a.m.— A volunteer will be at the
prairie on Friday, July 29 from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. to answer any of your questions. Driving
directions: Follow College Drive over the bridge, turn left onto 5th Ave. Drive five blocks
to Ohio Street, turn left. Follow Ohio Street past Aase Haugen over the dike about two
blocks, where parking is available. Watch for the Prairie Sign at the Ohio street turn and
also on the pole going over the dike.
Trollheim: Tur til fots (Tour of Troll Trails)—The 2016 Trollheim: Tur
til fots is a guided tour (approx. one hour) to three of the city’s most
notable sites in order to experience all known varieties of the Trolls
inhabiting the Decorah area. Experienced Trollologists will explain
natural and pioneer history, plus share Troll Tales while creating an
informative, enjoyable Fest adventure not to be missed. Participants should
wear sturdy shoes for a ½ mile hike as a side excursion to the van tour. Friday 10:00,
10:30, 11:00, 11:30 a.m. and 1:00, 1:30, 2:00, 2:30, 3:00 p.m. Saturday 1:30, 2:00, 2:30,
3:00 p.m. Reservations and information at the Main Information Center. No charge.

Gnomes on the Trail—Looking for a fun way to explore
some new parts of Decorah while at Nordic Fest? Join in
on this exciting, free scavenger hunt perfect for everyone!
Ten mischievous gnomes are hiding all along the Trout
Run Trail, enjoying the scenery and spying on the passing
bikers and walkers. Find as many as you can and you’ll be entered into a drawing for
fabulous prizes. Don’t forget your camera and smiles: additional prizes will be awarded
in several photo contest categories! Maps and further details will be available at the
Decorah Chamber of Commerce, 507 W. Water St. beginning Monday, July 25th and
throughout Nordic Fest.
Locust School Tours—The Locust School Museum will be open Friday, Saturday
and Sunday from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. during Nordic Fest. The address is 1640 Big Canoe
Road (corner of W38 and A26). It is 10 miles NE of Decorah. The school is owned and
operated by the Winneshiek County Historical Society. It was built in 1854 and used
until 1962. It is not handicap accessible.

favorite Nordic Fest memories, a DVD with archival footage from the first Nordic Fest (donated in memory
of LaVerne Hanssen) and a digitized version of a 1991 Nordic Fest promotional video.
Purchase of the book supports the permanent placement and proper organization of the Nordic Fest
archives at Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum.
Books purchased prior to Nordic Fest will be available for pick up
at the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce during the Fest.
