GREATEST MUSIC AND ARTWORKS
The Magic Cities Germany are home to
outstanding museums and world-class
musical events and ensembles. Major
composers and artists have left their mark

birth to new ideas.
Berlin – the Museum Island complex draws millions of visitors every year
Frankfurt – museum after museum on the

The museum embankment boasts 13 museums,
and there are at least as many again elsewhere
in the city. Dating back to 1815, the Städel
Museum houses artworks from seven centuries.
The Museum of Applied Art reopened in 2013
and sees itself as a place to experience new
developments. Frankfurt is also proud of its
greatest son, the poet and writer Goethe, and its
opera house, one of Germany’s finest.

orchestras, among them the Berlin Philharmonic,
offer the highest musical standards.

Berlin – City of cool
Capital in Step with the Times - always new, always Berlin! Berlin is a trendsetter: whether it’s museums or
galleries, gastronomy or entertainment, music or fashion – there’s always something going on in the scene
capital. Certainly the legendary night life, the attractive and unusual possibilities for shopping, but Berlin’s
unique history also enthralls visitors from near and far. Another enormous plus for the city is its
outstanding price-quality ratio – in Berlin you simply get more for your money.
Twenty five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall the former ‘Walled City’, lying as it does at the
interface between Western and Eastern Europe, has developed into a popular travel destination
and is highly indicative of the current trend, not only as tourists from Germany are concerned
but also visitors from abroad.

Dresden – City of culture
A magnificent royal seat for centuries, today
Dresden is one of Europe’s most beautiful
baroque cities. Nestling in the Elbe valley,
‘Germany’s Florence’ has developed into a
modern urban center, equally renowned for its
wealth of artistic and cultural treasures and as a
pioneering hub for science and research.
The Saxon electors’ fondness for the arts allowed
an extraordinary cultural life to flourish in the
city, reflected in such famous buildings as the
Frauenkirche Church (Church of our Lady), the
Royal Palace, Zwinger Palace and the
Semperoper in the historical old quarter.
The twelve museums of the Dresden State Art
Collections form the basis of the city’s reputation
as an international center of arts and culture, yet
they are only part of a wide range of different
museums. The city also boasts a long musical
heritage, along with a rich variety of leisure
activities and entertainment.

Leipzig – City of music
In 1989, the Monday demonstrations in Leipzig
wrote history as the start of the Peaceful
Revolution. 25 years later, Leipzig is known
around the globe for its dynamic arts, music and
festival scene. ‘Spinnerei’, a former cotton mill in
the hip Plagwitz district, is home to countless
galleries and artist studios. European music
history comes alive here: On the Leipzig Music
Trail, visitors can follow in the footsteps of
Bach, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Wagner.
Cultural enjoyment is provided by the
Gewandhaus, the Leipzig Opera or the worldfamous St. Thomas Boys Choir. Most of the
city’s sights are located within walking distance,
e. g. the Old City Hall, St. Thomas Church,
St. Nicholas Church, Auerbachs Keller. The
unique system of passageways with its stylish
boutiques and department stores invites visitors
to shop and stroll. Leipzig enchants with its

Cologne – lust for life with ‘Kölsch’
The local beer, dialect and attitude to
life all bear the name kölsch and define
this city on the Rhine. The most popular
shopping streets are Schildergasse and
Hohe Strasse. Luxury brands can be
found on Mittelstrasse, while the stores of
the Belgian Quarter are more individual
and alternative. Finish off the day in a
Südstadt bar, where the ‘köbes’ (beer
waiters) keep coming back until they’re
turned away.
Düsseldorf – a fashionista’s paradise
With boutiques and high-end fashion,
Königsallee (Kö) is the heart of this
elegant shopping city. The Kö-Bogen,
designed by the famed architect Daniel
Libeskind, connects Königsallee with
Hofgarten, and elongates the central
shopping mile. Every day, thousands of
shoppers stroll along this boulevard or
take a walk through the old quarter, ‘the
longest bar in the world’. The city’s dark
and eminently quaffable altbier is best
accompanied by Rhenish cuisine.

Nuremberg – City of history
Nuremberg is famous for its gingerbread, bratwurst
sausages, the Imperial Castle and a wealth of art and
culture. Visitors can spend plenty of time in the city’s
thirty museums or in Nuremberg’s shopping streets. They
will discover beautiful views in the city with its medieval
gabled houses, sandstone buildings and Gothic churches
in the old quarter: the very same vistas that Albrecht
Dürer, would have known so well. The Albrecht Dürer
House and the Germanisches Nationalmuseum keep his
memory very much alive and make his art treasures
available for public view. The documentation centre at
the Reichsparteitagsgelände (Nazi Party Rally Grounds)
and the Nuremberg Trials Memorial ensure the past is
not forgotten. Every year, the Christkind Christmas Angel
welcomes visitors to the Nuremberg Christmas market, –
it is hard to imagine a more traditional scene than this
festive fair, which captures the very essence of a romantic
German Christmas.

Stuttgart – City of cars
Automotive exhibitions, art galleries, ethnological and natural history museums – the museums in the
Stuttgart region are not only impressive for their number but also for their sheer variety. The theme of
the automobile is ever-present here. Stuttgart is the only city in the world to boast two automobile
museums. The Mercedes-Benz Museum documents the history of the automobile without a break from
its beginnings up to the present day. At the Porsche Museum visitors can follow the unique development
of the famous Porsche brand of sports cars. Two major art museums are located at the heart of the city:
Stuttgart State Gallery, which has an outstanding stock of paintings and is one of the most visited
museums in Germany, and Stuttgart Kunstmuseum, which contains the most important collection of
works by Otto Dix. The wider region is also home to great works of art of the highest calibre.

superb retail outlets and a quaint old town with
narrow alleyways and charming squares on the
banks of the River Leine. Close by is Maschsee
Lake with a host of leisure activities.
A wide range of museums, theatres and the
opera awaits culture fans. Hannover is also a
popular venue for international trade shows and
sporting events. The International Fireworks
Competition, the Maschsee Lake Festival and the
world’s biggest marksmen’s fair draw crowds
year after year.

Neuschwanstein Castle – Germany’s fairytale castle.
Neuschwanstein is known all over the world as a symbol of idealised
romantic architecture and for the tragic story of its owner. After losing
sovereignty in his own kingdom, Ludwig II withdrew into his own world
of myths, legend and fairytales.

JOIN IN THE FESTIVITIES AND SUCCUMB
TO GOURMET TEMPTATIONS
From the North Sea to the Alps, from
Rhenish lust for life to Saxon hospitality,
the Magic Cities Germany lie waiting to be
discovered. Food and drink hold body and
soul together – and there are always plenty
of reasons to celebrate. After all, the local
customs are best understood when you
join in.
Stuttgart – enjoying life, Swabian-style
A typical Swabian might be careful with his
money. But not when it comes to food and
drink, whether it’s maultaschen ravioli or
Michelin-starred dining. But Stuttgart’s real
attraction lies in its vineyards. The Stuttgart
Wine Trail passes hillside vines and introduces
trollinger and lemberger wines. For more lively
entertainment, head for the Cannstatter Wasen
fairground.

Munich – traditional Bavarian gemütlichkeit
The Munich Oktoberfest is the largest public
fair in the world, attracting millions of people
from all over the world. Whether in the
Hofbräuhaus or a beer garden, beer is the key
to everything in Munich. Sitting around a table
with a towering glass and something to snack
on (roast pork, weisswurst and pretzels for
example) is a well-established tradition in
Bavaria.

Cologne – carnival on the Rhine
If you want first-hand experience of
Rhenish zest for life, be sure not to miss
‘the fifth season of the year’ – otherwise
known as the Cologne Carnival.
Beginning on the eleventh day of the
eleventh month, this is a time to stop
taking yourself, and the world, so
seriously. ‘The crazier, the better’ is the
best way to describe the ‘silly days’
around Rose Monday.
Frankfurt – Liquid gold
Apfelwein is as synonymous with
Frankfurt as Goethe and the city’s
dazzling skyline. This distinctively
flavoured cider has been a symbol of
Hessian joie de vivre for over 400 years.
In a style typical of the city, apfelwein
marries Frankfurt tradition with modern
experimental flair. It tastes best in the
typical cider houses or at the cider
festival held in summer.

THE MAGIC CITIES
ARE ALWAYS
IN SEASON
The carnival drives away the
winter and brings fun and frivolity
to Cologne, Düsseldorf and
Munich. The spring tempts people
outdoors with a host of music,
culture and city festivals. In summer there is classical music and
jazz in the open air. The major
beer and wine festivals take place
in the autumn when the days are
still long. And in late November,
when the evenings start to draw
in, the magical Christmas markets
get under way, captivating all who
visit. The year comes to a spectacular close with Europe’s biggest
New Year’s Eve Party at
Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
