They trail the scent in the air ex: Pointers, Retrievers, Setters 2. HOUNDS: bred to hunt by traveling the scent that game birds and small animals leave on the ground ex: Beagles, Bloodhounds, Hounds 3. WORKING DOGS: bred for draft, guard, guide, or police duty ex: Dane, Boxer, Great Pyrenees 4. HERDING DOGS: dogs bred to help the herders control their animals. Ex. Collie, German Shepard, Australian cattle dog 5. TERRIERS: active small dogs bred to chase small animals from their dens ex: Bull terrier, Fox terrier 6. TOY DOGS: bred as pets and companions ex: Pekinese, Pugs, Spaniel 7.NONSPORTING: make up a miscellaneous group of dogs bred for purposes not included in the first 5 groups ex: Boston terriers, Bulldog, Poodle BREEDS OF DOGS The following is a sample of the breeds in each group.
