7 GROUPS OF DOGS
1. SPORTING: bred to hunt and
retrieve game birds and small
animals. They trail the scent in
the air
ex: Pointers, Retrievers,
Setters
2. HOUNDS: bred to hunt by
traveling the scent that game
birds and small animals leave on
the ground
ex: Beagles, Bloodhounds,
Hounds
3. WORKING DOGS: bred for
draft, guard, guide, or police
duty
ex: Dane, Boxer, Great
Pyrenees
4. HERDING DOGS: dogs
bred to help the herders control
their animals.
Ex. Collie, German Shepard,
Australian cattle dog
5. TERRIERS: active small
dogs bred to chase small
animals from their dens
ex: Bull terrier, Fox
terrier
6. TOY DOGS: bred as pets
and companions
ex: Pekinese, Pugs,
Spaniel
7.NONSPORTING: make up a
miscellaneous group of dogs
bred for purposes not included in
the first 5 groups
ex: Boston terriers,
Bulldog, Poodle

The English Pointer
Gets name from stance it takes in the
presence of game
 Developed 200 years ago in England
 Even temperament, intelligent, patient

GERMAN SHORTHAIR POINTER
Germany ~ 1600
 Hunts all types of game
 Rustic looking
 Outstanding temperament
 Tail usually docked to 40%

German Wirehaired Pointer
Hair is hard and bristly like steel wool
 Weather resistant
 Keen nose
 Responds well to owner but can be
unfriendly to strangers

Labrador Retriever
Native to Newfoundland
 Strong
 Very active
 Loves water
 Dependable, fine tempered, friendly
 Good for use as service dogs

Irish Setter
Solid red coat
 Older than the English setter, but have
common ancestry
 Speed and toughness in all terrain
 Learns slower but remembers for a long
time
 Independent and bold


Very old breed
 Hunted in packs
 Speed

 Popular as a show dog

The Beagle
One of the oldest breeds
 Noted rabbit hunter
 Hunts in packs or alone
 Cheerful, friendly
 Excellent around kids

The Bloodhound
Dates back to the 3rd century
 One of the most docile of all breeds
 Highly developed sense of smell
 Used by police to track, but will not attack

TERRIER GROUP

Divided into two subgroups
– Long legged
– Short legged
Boarder Terriers
Developed in the boarder area between
Scotland and England
 Developed to drive out fox
 Excellent companion dog

Miniature Schnauzer
German origin
 Bread to hunt badger, fox, weasle and other
vermin
 Wiry coat
 Excellent apartment dog

WORKING GROUP
Developed to labor or work
 Guard dogs, sled dogs, police dogs, rescue
and messenger dogs

Alaskan Malamute
Oldest arctic sled dog breed
 Named after an Innuit tribe
 Do not bark
 Sled dogs
 Fighters among other dogs
 Firm handling and training needed

The Boxer
Decendent of the old fighting dogs
 Bread to fight bulls and hunt bears
 Short lived (doesn't reach 10 years of age)
 Good natured, loyal
 Suspiciuos of strangers

HERDING DOG GROUP

Developed to aid the livestock herder
The Collie

Two varieties
» Long haired
» Rough coat
Scotland and northern England
 Kind, sensitive, intelligent
 Can be lazy or stubborn
 Some people can understand their barking

Old English Sheepdog
Steady, muscular
 Gait similar to that of a bear
 Had been used as a herder, sled dog, and
retreiver
 Disney loves this dog
 Great companion dog


TOY DOG GROUP
Named because of their size
 Can be as small as 1.5 lbs
 Popular as house pets

Chihuahua
Recognized as the smallest breed in the
world
 Oldest breed on the American continent
 Originated in Mexico
 Prefers it own kind
 Energetic and lively

Pug
Dates back to 400 BC
 Oriental origin
 Likes a lot of attention
 Easily trained

NONSPORTING GROUP
This is a groups of miscellaneous breed
 Usually used as companion dogs

Bulldog
Originated in England
 Comes from fighting lines
 Almost insensitive to pain
 Problems can arise during birth due to the
large head

Dalmatian
Origin is in dispute
 Used for draft, war, herding and hunting
vermin
 Use as a carriage dog

» Cleared the way for horse drawn fire engines, this is
why we now associated them with firefighters
Natural guardian
 Disney also loved this dog

