Convocation
of Thanks

Dear Friends and Family;
On behalf of the students of Mayo Medical School
and the Mayo School
of Health Sciences, we
thank you for attending the 2013 Convocation of
Thanks. We welcome the families and friends of
loved ones who gave of themselves well beyond
their mortal lives, that we might have the privilege
to learn from them.
Indeed, it is our duty to heal others with our new
found knowledge granted by the gifts of your
loved ones; they were our greatest teachers both
in terms of anatomy and giving.
During their lifetimes your loved ones shared their
hopes and dreams with you; with the students
of Mayo, they shared the stunning complexity of
the human body. Your presence today provides
yet another important lesson: we cannot limit our
care to the mortal body, but must reach rather to
embrace the human spirit.

I Did Not Die
Do not stand at my grave and forever weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush.
I am the swift uplifting rush.
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and forever cry.
I am not there. I did not die.

To every thing there is a season,
And a time to every purpose under the heaven.
A time to be born, and a time to die;
A time to plant, and a time to reap;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to get, and a time to lose;
A time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to love, and a time to hate;
A time of war, and time of peace.

I thought of you with love today but that is
nothing new.
I thought about you yesterday and days
before that too.
I think of you in silence, I often speak your
name.
All I have are memories and your picture in
a frame.
Your memory is my keepsake with which
I’ll never part.
God has you in His keeping, I have you in
my heart.
- Beautiful Thought
At the close of a man’s life, to estimate his
worth it is wise to see him in relation to
his life surroundings, to know not only the
part he played as an individual but also as
a component part of the great events to
which he contributed to the betterment of
mankind.
