May-2016 - Legal Chamber of Commerce

Legal School (Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools) is
very excited to offer families in our community a service that assesses their child’s development, and
identifies what support may be needed for them to
be as successful as possible in school. This service is
offered to all families with children who are enrolling
in the Pre-Kindergarten (formerly “Preschool) Program. The Pre-Kindergarten Program offers an active
learning environment for children of all abilities.
The program staff includes certified teachers, educational assistants and specialists/therapists who
help children become confident learners. Children
gain skills through play, inquiry, creativity, problem
solving, social interaction as well as early literacy,
language and numeracy activities. The program is
conveniently located in Legal School and boasts
small class sizes - often less than 16 students. The program welcomes children and families of all faiths to
attend our school.
Extra programming, support and therapy services
are available for eligible
children who have additional needs in any area
of development. Children
may attend one or more
years prior to kindergarten, depending on their eligibility for funding. While most children attend three
half days each week, children eligible for extra funding may attend four half days and receive familyoriented sessions.
Early Learning Program Coordinator, Rachel O’Brien,
who leads and organizes the pre-screening of children commented, “It’s been a wonderful process
that allows us to connect with families and help to
identify needs so that children are supported when
they enter our schools. There have been a number
of occasions where a family may not notice a particular delay with their child and our team will work
with the child and the
family to put in place the
support they need to be
successful in school. I’m
also hearing from a number of families that having
a one on one meeting
with them and their child
is appreciated and very
informative, given that we also provide tips on getting children ready for school.”
Registration for this year’s Pre-Kindergarten Program
is still open. If there are families with children aged
three and four looking to have their child attend a
program in September, please contact Rachel at
780-459-7711 to arrange for a pre-screening or to
inquire about program space and fees.

Yesterday, today and tomorrow
Sliding into debt is unfortunately very easy. In the “before” chart, the family is spending a significant portion of their money paying
off yesterday - between their mortgage, student loans, line of credit and understanding balances on high interest credit.
The “after” chart shows how making even small adjustments to your budget ca make a big difference to your financial future.
By working with their Investors Group Consultant who implemented a debt management plan, which included consolidating their
debts and creating a detailed monthly budget, this family was able to increase their cash flow by thousands of dollars a year,
allowing them to set aside more money for the future. Small changes can make a big difference.

Provincial Government Walks Away From Commitment to Fund Social Housing
In 2015, the Government of Alberta unexpectedly eliminated the grants in lieu of taxes funding for
seniors’ apartments and social housing units operated by public housing management bodies.
This means that the government has downloaded to municipalities costs to support over 25,000
social housing units across Alberta. The Town of Legal’s share of these costs is $6,734.06 based on
the Town’s 2015 assessment.
Our Council believes that the Government of Alberta should continue to be responsible for paying
these costs, similar to how all other property owners must pay for their share of municipal infrastructure and services.
If the government does not pay for these costs, the Town of Legal will either need to allocate this
amount to you as property owners which would mean a 0.67 per cent increase in property taxes
or we will need to reduce services in other areas. Neither option is fair to you as our residents.
We
therefore
urge
you
to
contact
MLA,
Glenn
van
Dijken
at
[email protected] and the Minister of Seniors and Housing at
[email protected] and urge them to reinstate the grant in lieu of tax program so that the
