Twenty Years Strong...
and getting stronger!
Twenty years ago a small group of
individuals joined forces to raise funds
for the Sturgeon Community Hospital.
Their goal was to help supplement
government funding and advance health
care for the residents of St. Albert,
Sturgeon County and North Edmonton.
This was the birth of the Sturgeon
Community Hospital Foundation and it
is an honor for me to step into the shoes
of chair, the same shoes worn by my
notable predecessors: Judy Gardiner,
Harry Gaffney, Brian Spooner, Gord Ulrich
and Rob Heron. It’s an even bigger honor
for me to be a part of the community of
our supporters and donors. You’ve made
a difference, a BIG difference, a $6.5
million dollar difference to be exact. So,
to each of you an equally BIG thank you!
Just sit back and take in all that you have
helped your hospital become today and
how well you’ve positioned us for the
future.
Digital Operating Room I-Suites
Upgrades ($250,000)
Equipment purchases and upgrades
to the Surgical Suite include the
most advanced digital equipment
and technology currently available
(anesthesia gas machines, cystoscope,
ACL arthoscopic instruments, laproscopic
equipment, power morcellizer). These
allow our surgeons to perform minimally
invasive surgeries resulting in faster
healing and a return to a fully productive
life sooner. The digital operating rooms
provide surgeons with the ability to
perform a broader scope of specialized
orthopedic surgeries and give them
the flexibility to perform combined
procedures in one operation.
Emergency Department Redevelopment
- Equipment Enhancements ($500,000)
The number of patients through the
Emergency Department doors has more
than doubled over the past twenty years
(from 22,000 in 1992 to 47,000 in 2010).
To meet the needs of the residents of
St. Albert, Sturgeon County and North
Edmonton, the Hospital/Alberta Health
Services redeveloped the Emergency
Department and funds we raised helped
equip it with a physiological transport
monitor, ECG machines, bariatric and
gynecological stretchers, a blood gas
analyzer, vital sign monitors and HAAS
equipment.
Maternity Theme Rooms ($42,000)
The Foundation and a Private Donor
Family took the concept of familycentered maternity care a step further by
embarking on an exciting and innovative
initiative. Funds were used to create
two professionally designed maternity
theme rooms to give a mother the time
to treasure the first few hours with her
newborn child in a warm and inviting
private environment.
New Intensive Care Unit ($500,000)
Funds raised complimented the new
state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit with
a biphasic defibrillator, ventilators,
monitor defibrillator pacemaker, holter
monitors, space lab and telemetry
monitors, ECGs, bronchoscope,
peripheral nerve stimulator. With these
additions, we can provide a wider range
of surgeries and provide patients with
complex care services.
CT Scan for Diagnostic Imaging
($500,000)
The Sturgeon Community Hospital
was the first hospital in Western Canada
to acquire a 16 slice computerized
tomography (CT) Scanner. The CT
scanner is faster and produces high
resolution images. With this advanced
technology the Hospital’s radiologists
have been able to do twice the number
of images in the same amount of
time. The Foundation is proud to have
contributed $500,000 toward the $3.2
million dollar price of this scanner.
Your giving also allowed us to direct
funds to the Women’s Health Program
(outpatient obstetrical room, fetal
monitors, neo-natal equipment
and oxygen flow meters). To the
Physiotherapy Department (stress
treadmill and other equipment). To
Respiratory (bipap machine). To the
Outpatient Department (colonoscope
and gastroscope). And finally, to
Palliative Care (bladder scanner).
Now that is something to be proud of,
don’t you think? And now it’s time to
look forward, to the next twenty years
and all that we can accomplish with your
ongoing support. Under the direction
of your hospital administration, we
plan our fundraising efforts to support
their initiatives and we count on your
donations and contributions. So the
next time you see an opportunity to give
to your hospital, however big or small,
please don’t pass it up. We need your
help! And we appreciate it greatly.

Expansion Update
This is a very exciting time for our
Sturgeon Community Hospital.
With the population growth of
St. Albert, Sturgeon County and
especially North Edmonton, the
numbers that our hospital provide
care for has dramatically increased.
And as many of you have seen,
the Hospital has expanded and
continues to do so. The staff,
doctors and healthcare providers
are dedicated to ensuring that
our hospital continues to provide
excellent care to our community.
The expanded and redeveloped
Emergency Department opened
to patients on December 7,
2010 following an extensive
refurbishment. The project,
which began in August 2008, is
part of the planned $43 million
redevelopment of the Sturgeon
Community Hospital.
The new Emergency Department
was built with future growth in
mind. In total, the new Emergency
Department is 2,160 sq metres in
size, compared to 790 sq. m before
redevelopment. It has a capacity
for 65,000 patient visits each year,
almost double that of the old
facility. The Emergency Department
currently records slightly less than
50,000 visits per year.
The Hospital is currently in Phase
2 – which includes redevelopment
of the main entrance. Construction
is scheduled for completion in
Spring 2012. This main area has
been expanded significantly to
complement the needed space
required for patient care services.
The redeveloped main entrance
will host the new Foundation office,
gift shop, patient registration and
switchboard. The new exterior will
add much needed parking in front
of the hospital as well as a clear
entry path into the hospital.
The redevelopment of the Sturgeon
Community Hospital is part of a
comprehensive, ongoing plan to
increase and improve health care
infrastructure across the province.
Our Current Fundraising Project
The Foundation’s current goal is to raise $250,000
to enhance the hospital’s existing Digital operating
rooms - which feature the most advanced digital
equipment and technology available today.
This is an exciting project for the Foundation as
digital operating rooms allow our surgeons to
perform minimally invasive surgeries which provide
immeasurable benefits to the patient. It is less

traumatic, promotes faster healing and allows the
patient to return to a full productive life sooner.
An additional benefit to having digital operating
rooms at this advanced level is the ability to do a
broader scope of specialized orthopedic surgeries and
the ability to perform combined procedures in one

Celebrating Life and Culture Gala
The second annual Life and Culture Gala event was held on October 1st
at the new Morinville Community Cultural Centre. The event was a great
success raising over $12,000 to promote the great work of local artists
while supporting a very important cause. Funds raised were directed to the
Hospital’s digital operating room initiative.
Thank you to the numerous sponsors, attendees, artists, committee
members and volunteers who made this event another great success!

High Q Greenhouses
In June 2011, High Q Greenhouses held their fourth annual plant and flower
sale at the Sturgeon Community Hospital. The sale was a great success and
was supported by staff, patients and visitors. High Q donated over $1,400,
a portion of their sales to the Foundation.
