Fall 2015 Newsletter - Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation
Connections Fall Newsletter 2015 Highlights Dr. Joseph Bergman Chief of Surgery Bringing sub-specialty surgery to St. Albert MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OUR PROJECTS EVENTS COMMUNITY SUPPORT Connections | Fall 2015 1 Message from our Chair Wally Monson A Brighter Tomorrow with your Support! Photo by ABI Photography As I commence my first year as Chair, I wish to extend my deepest appreciation to each and every one who has supported the important work of the Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation. When you contribute, you are not just a donor, but a part of our Hospital family, with a shared commitment to improving the health and wellbeing in our community. Your unwavering commitment enables the Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation to be the driving force it is today. The truth is, we are all interconnected and the success of our mission lies in the support we give and receive from those around us. We are deeply appreciative of those whose support has empowered us and permitted us to accomplish all that we have to date. 2 In a perfect world, all health care and hospital equipment needs would be funded by government. But this is not the case so it is up to hospital Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation foundations, like ours, to provide the finances which the government cannot. Through detailed consultation with our hospital and Alberta Health Services we have identified the following projects which we have committed to funding. It is a tall order to raise $1,500,000 but with your support we can and we will do it. I am so proud of our community, and am honored to help bring the best possible healthcare to you and your loved ones. On behalf of the Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees, thank you so much for your continued support. Together, we bring the best possible healthcare right here, close to home. Our Projects Medicine Program Expansion ($500,000): With the incredible growth of St. Albert, Sturgeon County and North Edmonton the demand on the Sturgeon Community Hospital dramatically increases every year. To meet the growing needs of the Medicine Program, it is vitally important to expand and further develop this program. The expansion will improve the ability of the Emergency Department to treat emergency patients and if required, move them into the Medicine Unit in a more timely fashion, which will help to alleviate the pressure and wait times in the Emergency Department. Level II Neonatal Intensive Care ($500,000): The Sturgeon Community Hospital maternity unit delivers approximately 3,000 babies each year. At present any baby born at the hospital requiring Level II Neonatal Care is transported to a hospital in Edmonton. The demand for Neonatal Intensive Care in the Edmonton Zone has increased substantially in the past four years. Level II care, which includes support to premature babies, respiratory and antibiotic support will now be provided at the Sturgeon Community Hospital, which will result in a decrease in the number of transfers required and separation of mom and baby. Surgical Program Equipment Enhancements ($250,000): To support our ever growing and respected surgical programs, equipment enhancements are needed to support the Upper Limb Extremity, Gynecological and General surgery programs. Equipment such as microscopic equipment/ instrumentation and specialty drills for hand surgery, upgraded equipment to support minimally invasive bowel surgical procedures and specialized equipment required to meet the current technological standard and support the most advanced procedures in gynecology surgery. Some of the required equipment is needed to perform procedures with laparoscopic techniques, providing a shorter length of hospital stay and a speedier recovery for the patients. Connections | Fall 2015 Upper Extremity Care & Research ($250,000): Over the past five years, the Sturgeon Community Hospital has become a very active center for orthopaedic upper extremity care. The goal is to establish the Sturgeon as an upper extremity centre of excellence over the next few years by providing high quality patient care through undertaking rigorous clinical outcome research. This is an unique opportunity for the Foundation to assist the Surgical program in advancing their goal to become the centre of excellence. Events Calendar 4 Mental Health - Public Lecture Series Medical Ethics and the Law Seminar – November 19, 2015 Sturgeon Community Hospital Week – January 24-31, 2016 Friend Raiser Gala – January 30, 2016 Heritage Golf Classic - June 17, 2016 For more information on any of the above events, please contact the Foundation office at 780-418-7361 or visit our website at www.sturgeonhospitalfoundation.org. Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation Mental Health Public Lecture Series Join us for our upcoming lecture series. We are pleased to be offering a four part series dealing with issues surrounding mental health; a growing health concern that is seldom talked about by those 4.5 million people in Canada who are trying to cope with the disease because “they fear judgment and rejection” (Canadian Medical Association) or they hope it will just go away. The series will address the many issues faced by both young and old, because no one is immune from this insidious disease. Our first session, to be held on October 27 at the Sturgeon Community Hospital in Conference Rooms ABC, is titled “Surviving the Storm” and will target the concerns that family, friends and caretakers have as they work to support loved ones suffering from one form of the disease. Leading this session will be Dr. Allan McDonald and Shelley Porter. Shelley will be sharing her very personal story of heartbreak and frustration as she dealt with her son’s mental illness. Session Two is slated for January and will deal with the youth segment of our population who suffer from mental illness. Two alarming statistics relate to this group: only one in five who need mental health services will actually receive them; and, suicide accounts for 24% of all deaths among 15 – 24 year olds. Session Three is on our calendar for March and will discuss mental illness in young adults. Session Four, to be held in May, addresses our older population and will include a discussion on dementia. Our dates and speakers will be announced at a later date, so mark your calendars and stop by our website (www. sturgeonhospitalfoundation.org) regularly to be the first to hear the dates and the speaker roster when they are finalized. To register just call our office at 780.418.7361, but register early because seating is limited. Connections | Fall 2015 5 Community Support Every day, in some way, a member of our community thinks of the Sturgeon Community Hospital or the Foundation. Whether it’s by providing kind words about the service you received in the Hospital, participating in a Foundation event or carrying out your own event in support of the Foundation, our community is the foundation of our success. Here are just a few examples of your thoughtfulness and generosity. Thank you! Bad Guys Doing GOOD! 50 1st Legion, Stars Wars Storm Troopers participated in the second annual Eek! Comic & Pop Culture Fest in St. Albert the weekend of May 30th. Event attendees had an opportunity to pose for a photo with the group for a donation. All funds raised were donated to the Hospital Foundation in support of patient care. The Foundation is honored to have been chosen two years in a row as their charity of choice. St. Albert Community Foundation The Foundation extends a huge thank you to the St. Albert Community Foundation/Thatcher Family who funded an urgently needed Panda Transport Unit for the Neo-Natal program at the Hospital. This unit is used for the initial resuscitation, stabilization and transport of neo-natal patients following delivery. Hugs and Stitches Quilt Club 6 Members of the Hugs & Stitches Quilt Club donated quilts to the Sturgeon Community Hospital. These quilts were distributed to palliative and elderly patients who welcomed the warmth and generosity of these beautiful quilts. Morinville’s Paint the Town Red Event Another fun filled event was held on September 25th! Thank you to the event attendees, generous sponsors, artists, Royal Canadian Artillery Band, musicians, event volunteers and especially the Gala Committee who supported the sixth annual another great success! Funds raised were directed towards patient care. Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation Donor Listing (April 1, 2014 – March 31, 2015) Our sincere thanks to all those who have generously supported our work to date. Every gift we receive is greatly appreciated and contributes to the overall success of our endeavors.
