Meeting at TJC West
Feburary 14, 2015
The Prez says:
Table of Contents
February is here (so far, so good on the
minimal winter nastiness) and Valentines Day
is almost here as is our next meeting (also on
Valentines Day). I don’t know about everyone
else, but I’m ready for warmer weather and
more shop time – the 70 degree days we had
recently have me spoiled.
Here’s an oops! I forgot to mention that “dues
are due” at the last meeting – please take
care of this if you haven’t already done so –
thanks!
Be sure to check the information in the newsletter on our proposed bylaw
changes – they are “tidy-up” changes, but the membership must vote to
make it legal – we’ll be doing this at the next meeting on 2/14.
In the last Prez column, I mentioned an old ETW newsletter link to a 1926
film on turning a bowl. That same film is the current featured video in - take
a look – very interesting!
Tom’s skew demo last month was great – I know I sure need to practice this
important skill – I have a bad habit of ignoring the skew. Of special
importance was the suggested valuable use of the skew in opening a can of
Johnson’s paste wax” (I wonder if it can be used on my can of Hartco
Professional Guard Wax – I’ll have to check with Tom).
So, in February, Paul is giving us a demonstration on turning a scab bowl. I
didn’t know what a scab bowl was, so I asked Paul at MOST (fearing the
worst, I had visions of lots of CA and a large container of, well, you
know…). Paul explained that a tree scab is the growth formed after a limb
is removed, ending up with a sort of burl (I was relieved). Maybe it’s a baby
burl? Anyway, come see a scab bowl being turned at our next meeting!
In the meantime, go turn something!
Dennis

SWAT Demonstrators Suggestions Needed
I had a call from Buddy Compton (SWAT Vice President)
in charge of both National and Regional Leads for 2016.
Sometime back, Buddy requested demonstrator names
for these two categories of demonstrators. To date he
has received very few and again is requesting input from
our SWAT attendee base.
Please take the time and effort to assist Buddy in
developing the best demonstrator lineup for 2016.
I can assure you, having served as the Demonstration
Chair, that securing people for these positions in not an
easy task and your input will be greatly appreciated by
Buddy.
This information needs to be sent to Buddy ASAP.
Thanks, KT
ETW SWAT Director
TURNERS TO GO
Southwest Association of Turners (SWAT) invites the
many talented turners and demonstrators from the entire
SWAT region to visit the website, www.swaturners.org,
and register to become a regional demonstrator. This
program should be a benefit to our member
organizations as many have indicated a need for a way
to locate demonstrators who would be willing to travel to
their clubs.
Once the application form is filled out and submitted, the
SWAT “Turners to Go” committee will check it for
completeness then put it online. Member organizations
looking for demonstrators can search through the
website by name or by subject. SWAT will not set nor
require any particular fees to be paid to the
demonstrators. That will be left entirely up to the host
club.
This service is intended to provide the names of talented
woodturners who are willing to demonstrate for the
various SWAT member organizations, but without
applicants, the program will not succeed. Therefore,
please go online today and fill out the application form.

This material was written by Russ Fairfield; (a well known turner who has passed away) and suggested by Ed Heuslein
The "Universal Truths" of Woodturning
(As I Know Them)
These Truths I hold as self-evident. These are the
things about woodturning that I have learned to accept
without question. They are above argument. I have no
doubt that many more can be added as I become more
proficient in the art/craft of woodturning. I also have no
doubt that there will be arguments on the merits of some of those that I have included. There is no importance in their
listed order; I wrote them down as I thought of them.
1. The color of the grinding wheel has no meaning. While all white wheels may be Aluminum Oxide, not all
Aluminum Oxide wheels are white. They also come in a pale green, violet, pink, blue, and yellow, depending
on the manufacturer and the dyes they use in the binders that hold the abrasive particles together.
2. There is no truth to the myth that the gray wheels will damage the steel.
3. A cheap grinding wheel is a cheap grinding wheel, whatever color it is. Good quality is more expensive.
Lacking any other knowledge and specifications, the price is a good indicator of quality.
4. A 46-grit is a coarse wheel, and a 120-grit is a fine wheel. Take your pick for those in between. There isn't
enough difference between 60, 80, and 100-grit to worry about it.
5. Getting HSS to turn blue or even red-hot while grinding is not a problem. But, if you do, let it cool in the air.
Don't shock it by submerging it in cold water because that can start micro- cracks in the thin cutting edge.
6. Getting carbon steel hot enough to turn blue can be a problem. That temperature allows the Carbon to move
around in the steel and it looses its temper. All is not lost when this happens, just get it hot again, immediately
dip it in cold water, and then grind away the blue steel, keeping it cool this time with frequent dipping in cold
water.
7. Real woodturners do use scrapers.
8. You can turn an entire bowl or anything else, inside and out, with a scraper. It just takes longer and there is no
reason for the tooled finish to be any different from that of a gouge.
9. Any wood can be turned. Some is just easier than others. On a scale of 1-to-10, I have yet to find a "Zero", but
I have had some that came close.
10. Don't turn bad wood. There is good wood and there is bad wood. Experience will teach us the difference. And,
a high purchase price is not a measure of wood quality.
11. Some wood will crack, no matter what you do with it. Neither soap, nor bags, nor magic potions, or prayer will
save it. And you will never know until after it happens.
Editors note:
* Russ passed away before CBN grinding wheels became popular
* Heat treating carbon steel is not difficult but it is slightly more complicated than
Item 6 (above) would indicate. Hardening will require getting the metal red hot
before dunking in water; then the metal will need to be tempered to reduce
brittleness. Tempering can be done in a kitchen oven (400 deg F for half an hour
should do it). Steel with signicifant amounts of alloys requires different treatment
(sometimes not achievable in home shops).

Member John Deatherage highlight:
By J. J. Altier
This month our member highlight is honoring, I believe, our oldest member. Today I had the privilege of visiting with
a good friend, John Deatherage. John was born in 1925 I believe in Waxahachie Texas. Hey if eighty years of age
is referred to as an octogenarian, then what is one in his nineties? Give up? Of course you do, I did. It is a
nonagenarian. Pretty funny, huh? NANO, NANO, remember Robin William’s first TV series.
John lives alone at his home on Cedar Creek Lake; John lost his wife of seventy years, Elizabeth, two years ago.
They had two boys and two girls together. Three of the kids live in Texas and one in Virginia.
John joined the US Marine Corps, First Division. He spent some time in the orient and became part of the Allied
Occupation Forces in China. John attended schools in Waxahachie, graduating from high school there in 1942.
Then he went to work for the highway department learning asphalt- technology. He attended SMU School of
engineering. There he graduated in 1949. The hunger grew in him, wanting to improve himself in that field. He left
for Iowa State to earn his Master’s degree in the field of asphalt- technology. It was in Iowa he met his beautiful wife
Elizabeth Ann Scully.
John worked in the asphalt industries for thirty six years, six of those years in Tulsa working for Tulsa Industries.
Thirty years spent in Texas working for Texas Bitulithic Company. John became a respected member in his chosen
career. He is a lifetime member of the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists.
After leaving Tulsa John moved his family to a piece of property he bought in the mid-sixties. Cedar Creek Lake was
not built yet. He bought this property BEFORE the lake was put in. Who buys a piece of lakefront property with no
lake? Not me that’s for sure. John had an idea that this was the move to make. Guess that’s why Johns view is so
much better off than mine. What foresight he had. No kidding you should see this view.
He really did not get interested in wood turning until one day talking with John Horn of the Ft. Worth club although he
has been a woodworker most of his life. I saw things in his home he built as an early teenager. Wait were there
power tools back then? I think all power then was run with steam, just kidding. John joined the ETW some ten or
twelve years ago. John still turns in his 12x26 shop. He is currently working on a walnut bowl permanently mounted
to his lathe with a faceplate and four 3/8” lag bolts. John is very safety conscience.
Attached are some photos of John displaying his bowls, some of his shop and one black and white photo of John (at
a very young age) with is dad. Look closely of the child in the photo. I think it is Spanky of “Our gang.” John laughed
but didn’t deny he is the famous Spanky.
