I requested those people that had listed special needs as one of their client groups. You can add in your own zip code and refine your search. The site includes references, background checks, experience and the rate charged, (this varies person to person). Knowing how hard it can be to find child care, I chose to include this information. SNAAP does not endorse this or any other child care organization. SNAAP is not responsible for the claims made or services provided by this program. Please avail yourself of reference and background check information prior to securing the services of any person, previously unknown to you, for the care of your child. http://www.care.com/visitor/captureSearchBar.do?care=special-needs-care Community Events – general While these are not specifically geared towards special needs individuals, I have included these activities hoping that the whole family may be able to attend together – enjoy! Horseback riding helps to strengthen the rider’s core muscles thereby improving balance and posture. It is a ―sensory-rich experience promoting movement, touch, pressure into the joints, sound, and visual sensations. Activating and strengthening of the trunk and diaphragm, improved postural control, and organizing sensory inputs can help to promote increased speech sounds and volume. It’s also great fun! 23 The JNH riders are taught to groom, tack and be considerate riders as they come to understand the nature of the horse. Through this understanding and caring, the students build a positive self-image, learn responsibility and develop selfconfidence. The priorities at JNH are: Safety – Fun – Learning. The JNH horses and ponies are gentle motivators who enable their riders to discover new friends, new abilities and new horizons. The small number of children meets in the community room with highly trained service dogs, & the children read to the dogs! Children that have not learned to read or who are too young describe the pictures. It is an excellent way of practicing reading skills, building reading confidence & fluency with a totally nonjudgmental audience. Having an audience that allows for mistakes, doesn’t interrupt & is as attentive as these beautiful dogs is so much fun they forget that they are practicing. As a wonderful benefit, the children are allowed to spend time petting the dogs – a good incentive! This is not specifically for special needs children, but parents with special needs students have attended & highly recommend it. You will absolutely love the therapy dogs, Socrates and Choteau! Here’s a tip for special needs parents that will save you time and sanity! Take a letter from your doctor/specialist stating the diagnosis of your child. Immediately after you enter the first park on your first day, head directly to the customer service center/guests services. Explain that you have a special needs child and a letter from your doctor, usually they will not ask to see the letter itself, at least that’s been my experience. They will ask the number of people in your party and the number of days you will be at Disney. You will receive a pass that is to be shown to the first Disney staff member you see at each ride. The pass will allow you to skip the line and enter the ride either using the Fast Pass entrance or through a different door entirely. You will save so much time, the waiting is practically nonexistent. The pass isn’t limited to special times of the day and can be used throughout your stay. It is only for rides, not photo opportunities. It is a great feeling walking past the long lines of people, and definitely worth the call to the doctor for a letter and the visit to the Disney guest services. America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass – (Free Access Pass) The website gives full details of this program, it is rather lengthy, but worth looking at. 32 The Access Pass admits pass holder/s and passengers in a non-commercial vehicle at per vehicle fee areas and pass holder + 3 adults, not to exceed 4 adults, at per person fee areas. (Children under 16 always admitted free). The pass may be issued to U.S. Citizens or permanent residents of the U.S., regardless of age, that have been medically determined to have a permanent disability that severely limits one or more major life activities. A permanent disability is a permanent physical, mental, or sensory impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, such as caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, and working The Access Pass provides a 50 percent discount on some Expanded Amenity Fees charged for facilities and services such as camping, swimming, boat launching, and specialized interpretive services. In some cases where Expanded Amenity Fees are charged, only the pass holder will be given the 50 percent price reduction The Forest Service, the National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Bureau of Reclamation honor the Access Pass at sites where Entrance or Standard Amenity Fees are charged. In addition, the Corps of Engineers and Tennessee Valley Authority may honor the Access Pass. http://www.nps.gov/pub_aff/access/access_pass.htm#obtain Wander Alerts Many of us have to contend with, either in our own lives or in the lives of families we work with, the problem of children wandering off, becoming distracted & disoriented.
