In the Peace of Christ
SAINT JOHN VIANNEY MAY 26, 2013 Catholic Church In the Peace of Christ Saint john Vianney Dear friends in Christ: On Pentecost, Pope Francis met in Rome in St. Peter’s Square with nearly a quarter of million members of the “new movements” of the Church. This was a practice initiated by Blessed Archdiocese of Galveston — Houston John Paul II and continued by Pope Benedict and now Pope Francis. The “new movements” are 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail groups of laity that aim to deepen the life of faith and Christian life. There are numerous groups Houston, TX 77079 throughout the world and they each have their own personality and charisma. We have several groups active here in our parish: Focolare, Rengum Christi, Opus Dei, The Heralds of the Gospel Tel.: 281-497-1500 to name but a few. Distinctive of the “new movements” as opposed to the ‘older movements’ in Fax: 281-584-2024 www.stjohnvianney.org the Church is that they are directed to the laity and not to the vowed or ordained vocations. While some of the new movements have priests and vowed religious, they are not religious _______________________________ orders such as the Dominicans, Franciscans or Jesuits. Characteristic of many of these “new” groups are the large number of youth and the enthusiasm of their members. This is certainly PARISH CLERGY Rev. R. Troy Gately evident when they gather in Rome for these special celebrations. Pastor As has become most common, especially since the pontificate of John Paul II, these massive gatherings often take on the characteristics of a pep rally. The special celebration for Rev. Charles J. Talar youth held every few years, World Youth Day has been called a “Catholic Woodstock”. I Rev. Daniel L. remember the lament of a shop owner several years ago in Denver when World Youth Day was Warden held there who said that hundreds of thousands of Catholic youth from all over the world came Priests in Residence to the Mile High City with the Ten Commandments and a twenty dollar bill and they didn’t break either! Part of the gatherings, even at the regular audiences in Rome has become the yelling or Deacons chanting of the Pope’s name as at a soccer game or sporting event. “J P 2 – we love you!”, “Ben-e Dale Steffes -det-to (clap, clap, clap) Ben-e-det-to (clap, clap, clap)” and most recently, “Fran-cis-co, Fran-cisAl Vacek co”. On the vigil of Pentecost while meeting with many of the youthful members of the “new Fred Kossegi movements” Pope Francis took some questions and addressed the crowds with some “off the Randy Graham cuff” remarks. He acknowledged the chanting of his name and asked that instead of chanting his ______________________________ name that the young people chant the name of Jesus! He reminded them that Jesus is in our PASTORAL STAFF midst and that the crowds should shout out the name of Jesus! When I read this, I was ready to shout out “YES!!!!!” Thank you Pope Francis! Furthermore, I am confident that Blessed John Adult Formation Paul and Pope Benedict couldn’t agree more! It is wonderful and exciting to be near the pope, Yvonne Gill but Pope Francis is 100% on target, Jesus is in our midst and he is the true cause of our joy and Youth Formation excitement! Daniel Marcantel As Catholics, we have committed our lives to the Lord Jesus. He is our Savior and he comes ‘to strengthen us in Word and Sacrament!’ We should shout out the name and love of Music Ministry Jesus in our words, actions and attitudes all day, every day! I still like what Pope Francis’ name’s Michael Madrid sake, St. Francis of Assisi had to say, “we should preach the gospel at all times and when Pastoral Care/ necessary, use words.” Too often, we let things, even good things (like our love and respect for Spiritual Life the pope – or our family – or our work or earthly wants and desires), distract us from that which Louis Provenzano is most important in our lives, our relationship with God. When we keep God first in our hearts, minds and souls everything else works out. Our faith in God, our relationship with Jesus isn’t just Parish Life/ one among many. It is THE relationship that most defines who we are. When we love Jesus so Activity Center Richard Fairly much that we want to share his love with others, our love for others grows richer, deeper and stronger. When we love Jesus so much that we want to always follow him always, we not only Social Service grow in holiness, we grow in happiness; for holiness is the key to happiness. Pope Francis has Ministries done us a huge favor in reminding us in such a simple and beautiful way to always remember to Deborah Montez shout out with our whole lives the name of Jesus! New Parishioner Night Wine and Cheese Reception Mary's Appearance in Prouille, France Here’s a look at what believers say happened when Mary appeared in Prouille, France in 1208 to a Spanish preacher named Domingo de Guzman (known in English as Saint Dominic), during which he said Mary taught him the Rosary prayer to teach others how to pray: Dominic was disappointed and frustrated that his efforts to preach the Gospel message of Jesus Christ in southern France to the Albigenses had failed. The Albigenses believed that God, who was spirit, wouldn't enter the material world. Dominic worked hard to convince the Albigenses to reflect on the life of Jesus Christ, who claimed to be God incarnated in the material world to redeem it. But the Albigenses argued with Dominic, and he left feeling like a failure. In 1208, Dominic prayed in a chapel in Prouille, France, asking Mary for encouragement and guidance. While Dominic was praying, Mary appeared to him and reportedly said: "Don't wonder that you have obtained so little fruit from your work. You've labored over barren soil, not yet watered with the dew of divine grace. When God decided to renew the face of the earth, He began by sending down on it the fertilizing rain of the Angelic Salutation. Therefore, preach my Psalter -- composed of 150 Angelic Salutations and 15 Our Fathers, and you will obtain an abundant harvest." Mary further instructed that, in between saying those simple prayers, people should reflect on the life of Jesus Christ on Earth and meditate on what it means for them in their own lives. Mary concluded by saying of the Rosary: "That prayer will never fail." By "Angelic Salutation," Mary was referring to the greeting that Archangel Gabriel spoke to her when he announced that God wanted her to be Jesus' mother "Hail, Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with you." The "Our Fathers," that Mary mentioned are taken from Matthew 6:9-13, in which Jesus teaches his disciples how to pray. The Rosary prayer proved to be popular when Dominic introduced it to others after his encounter with Mary. Besides introducing the Rosary, Dominic also founded the Order of Friars Preachers (better known as the Dominicans), a worldwide religious order.
