Chopsticks are the utensils of
choice…
Using Chopsticks…
Chopsticks were originally sacred
objects used to offer food to deities.
Each family member has his or her own
oair.
Disposable chopsticks are used for
guests. They are called waribashi.
Hashioki is a small chopstick rest.
Nuribashi are chopsticks used for daily
meals.
They are not difficult to use
once you try them.
Color and texture are important
TEISHOKU &
OSHIBORI
A popular set meal is usually
served with rice, soup, pickles, and
an entrée like roasted fish.
Moist towels (usually cold in the
summer and warm in the winter)
are offered for customers to wipe
their hands.
Tableware is also decorative
School lunch almost always
includes rice…
In schools students eat on low
tables and sit on the floor.

Konyaku noodles & tofu
Add ingredients into boiling soy/water
mixture. Cook to your liking.
Remove and eat, cook more desired.
Okonomiyaki
Okonomi means ‘as you like it’
OKONOMIYAKI
The customer cooks a pancake-like
batter on the hot table-top iron
griddle, adding meat, seafood, and
vegetables as desired.
It is seasoned with sauce
(mayonnaise-like), green seaweed,
and bonito flakes (dried).
Okonomiyaki is usually made at
your table…Osaka & Hiroshima
