We have also had students from Year 11, train in First Aid today. Today I attended the official opening of the Canada Bay Council Men’s Shed in the Community Centre in Gipps Street. Our school has a strong connection with this through the Men’s Intergenerational Project which a number of our boys have participated in over the past three years. With the guidance of the older men they have constructed a number of items such as wheelchairs for Africa, a canoe, and notably some garden furniture for the Community Garden at the Community Centre. Other students have contributed to the mural in the garden. We are proud to be collaborating with our Council in these projects. BUSES As I indicated last week we have concerns about safety outside the school in the afternoon. We are telling students the following and would really appreciate you reinforcing with them. Stay inside the school grounds until directed on to your bus Do not push to get on, but line up calmly Do not run up to buses which stop further up the road but wait for teacher instructions to proceed Students walking home should disperse straight away and not crowd the bus area Use the lights at the corner to cross the street instead of running or wandering across at any other point In addition, part of the problem is students not dipping their passes, and unfortunately being rude and unco-operative with drivers. This behaviour is not in any way consistent with our school values and I am sure not with our parents. I must remind students that the concession passes are a privilege not a right, and they can be withdrawn by the STA if behaviour is not appropriate. I am sad to report that I am receiving a number of complaints from the public about the behaviour of our students on their way home from school. Where the individuals are identified we can follow up on them, but it is the attitude behind this behaviour, of no consideration for others, which is most disturbing. Do you as parents know where your children are and what they are doing after school? They are reflecting very poorly on the school. Supervision at this time is the family responsibility. Please assist us by reinforcing the need to be respectful of other people and property on the way to and from school as well. Whenever possible they should be going straight home. On a much more positive note, our Merit Scheme is showing that many students are consistently doing the right thing. Every week one of those who attain a Bronze level merit or higher receives a prize of a Canteen Voucher, kindly donated by our canteen operators. It is great to be able to reward good behaviour and effort in this way. J.Koob Principal TALENTED ATHLETES Ryan Rolph (Yr 9) has been selected in the Greater Western Sydney U/14 talent squads for AFL. He trains weekly at Blacktown International Park and he will play in the State Championships in Albury in October this year. If he plays well, he could earn NSW selection and we wish him all the best. Oliver Flack (Yr 10) has just competed for NSW All Schools in Hobart recently. His NSW team won the tournament prevailing over QLD in the final 3-1. He played in midfield throughout the tournament and his great play has seen him earn selection in the Australian U/16 National team. This team will tour South Africa next year and play matches against the South African U/18’s team. The tour will last 15 days and will include many amazing experiences. Oliver is one of 8 team members from NSW in a 16 man squad. We wish Oliver all the best and look forward to some great results. ATTENTION PARENTS/GUARDIANS! The students at Concord High School are often quite modest. Can you please encourage them to approach the PE department (common 8) with their achievements, so they can be recognised and published to the whole school community? Or you can contact Brent Chappelow (PDHPE teacher) by email [email protected] or on 9745 377 (ext 130). Congratulations to the students listed below, who have been awarded a Merit this week.
