Quality throughout really is terrific, not least in Whispering Angel, probably their most popular wine and a stunner year after year. Indeed, each Christmas I publish my ‘Wines of the Year’, in which I name just one favourite wine from a whole year’s drinking in seven different categories. Last year the Rosé category was scooped by the 2014 vintage of Whispering Angel, and I have to say this 2015 is every bit as good. It’s a delicate, shimmering, but personalitypacked pink with grapefruit and hints of peachiness against riveting acidity in a super-fresh, gastronomic but deliciously quaffable style, and it really is a Provence benchmark. A vineyard worker, aided by a winch, hauls grapes up a steep slope in Provence. OPPOSITE, FAR RIGHT: Signs direct visitors to the myriad wineries and other attractions in the town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. 2 VINTAGES The vast, beautiful expanse that encompasses the South of France offers wine lovers such diversity that it’s impossible to sum it all up in any convenient, uncomplicated way. But there are guideposts to help steer you through these wonderful wines. When considering wines from the Southwest, Languedoc, Roussillon, the Rhône and Provence, remember: these are food-friendly, approachable, quality wines that offer great value. VINTAGES 3 A winemaker draws a sample from a barrel in a 17th-century cellar in Coteaux du Languedoc. BELOW: Vineyards on the outskirts of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Mont Ventoux is in the background. QUALITY ASSURANCE A concerted raising of the bar has put the South of France’s wines in the world spotlight. Across the South of France there have always been pockets of premium-quality winemaking, but for many years, the greater emphasis was on quantity over quality, and the production of generic bulk wines for the domestic market dominated. Very recently, an increasing appetite among producers to create wines of provenance has corresponded with focused investment from the EU and utterly changed the winemaking landscape here. Producers have raised the quality and the tone of their wines, employing better vineyard management, site selection, trellising, grape selection and a renewed rigour in all aspects of winemaking. The results have been astounding. For wine lovers across the globe, the explosion of quality, value and consistency – not to mention the great diversity of expression – now found across the South of France represents an exciting, nearly unlimited opportunity for discovery. 4 VINTAGES DOMAINE DE LA BAUME ELISABETH VIOGNIER 2014 GÉRARD BERTRAND GRIS BLANC ROSÉ 2015 Gold Medal winner at the 2015 Concours des Vins du Languedoc-Roussillon. TASTING NOTE: Pale peach colour with floral aromas alongside peach, yellow plum and fresh herbs. This is savoury and elegant, with great acidity. Bright, fresh and zesty, with herb and citrus peel flavours. Great for summer salads or grilled shellfish. (VINTAGES panel, May 2016) IGP Pays d’Oc, Midi TASTING NOTE: Powerfully aromatic, wow! Floral, with ripe fruit, chamomile and nutty tones. Crisp and fresh with great depth of flavour and richness. Crafted with heft and body in mind. A real beaut. The most obvious chink in this wine’s armour is its potential longevity – I know it will roll along for a few years, but it will not stand a chance of making the long run ... Aside from this, Les Epices is made from old vines and it also sees a decent slug of oak. I realise that it is not from a highly fashionable part of the wine world ... but leaving geography aside this is a spectacularly aromatic, earthy, flavourpacked Syrah with a great finish. It is far superior to loads of Northern Rhône Syrahs at two or three times the price so load up! Fresh and balanced with a touch of spritz. Crafted in a light, fruity style with great fruit flavours. Superb value. Enjoy with seafood dishes. (VINTAGES panel, July 2015) TASTING NOTE: Powerful tannins are the hallmark of this dense wine, hardly surprising considering the blending of Malbec and Tannat. The wine also has the concentrated fruit to go with the structure, with its black plum and dark berry flavors. Structure and fleshy fruit are coming together well, just needing time. Drink from 2018. Editors’ Choice. Score: 92 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Feb. 2016) TASTING NOTE: This is a broad, rich blend of Duras and Braucol with a little Syrah thrown in. The sun-drenched vineyards of the South of France are home to such a wealth of grape varieties, and so varied are the regions and wines produced here, that it’s impossible to capture it all in a short summary. Suffice it to say, if you love wine, becoming familiar with the South of France is a must. The Southwest can be considered more similar to Bordeaux than to the Rhône, sharing principal varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec with its famous neighbour. Across the remainder of southern France, regions are united by many common threads, such as Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault for the reds and Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne and Marsanne for whites. SOUTHERN STYLE What’s your pleasure? Southern France’s delicious wines run the gamut from big and bold to light and fresh. White wines are primarily dry, richly textured and full-flavoured, but many places do craft versions that emphasize freshness and crispness, as well as producing fine late-harvest or botrytized sweet wines. For lovers of red wine, the South of France offers up everything from the intensely flavoured, tannic Malbec-based wines of Cahors to the soft, round blends of the Rhône valley, and everything in between. The South of France is famous for rosé wines, and those crafted in Provence (France’s oldest winemaking region) are considered the benchmark expression for fruity, dry rosé wines – little wonder; Provence winemakers have been perfecting rosés for over 2,600 years. Aged in a combination of concrete tank and demi-muid, it makes the most of this difficult vintage and has terrific purity in its raspberry, violet, licorice and olive-laced aromas and flavors. The palate is plush and robust with great structure, depth and complexity. Fruit-driven, with nice lift and a well-integrated oak. Warm and smoky on the finish. (VINTAGES panel, May 2016) TASTING NOTE: The nose is quite impressive, with notes of raspberry, black cherry and spice. The palate offers good balance, density and concentration with a sweet core of raspberry midpalate and a spicy finish. Nice elegance and a great value. Is it any wonder, then, that we also produce fabulous pinks? Featuring brilliant acidity and bright flavours without all the hefty tannins, rosés are simply made for summertime and are almost freakishly food-friendly – more so than most people think. I asked my colleagues at Vintages to share their own favourite pinkwine pairings. My first stop was with Astrid Brummer and Laura Ruffolo, category manager and product manager, respectively, for Ontario wines. “Are you ready for this?” asked Astrid, spreading her arms and fingers wide in the universal signal of a mind-blowing pronouncement to follow. “I like a flavourful rosé with smoky barbecued ribs.” Think the Wildass Rosé from Stratus Vineyards, which has bright flavours and a big rush of acidity. “It’s not the typical match, but the tangy acidity balances out the smokiness. Delicious.” “I’ve got to go with roasted chicken with lots of herbs,” said Laura, nodding sagely. “Like the wine, it’s flavourful without being heavy, and just seems to suit warm weather.” Southbrook’s Triomphe Organic Cabernet Franc Rosé, with its slightly savoury flavours and good intensity, would be a great choice. “Hmm, is there a wrong answer here?” Sean Adams, product advisor for Ontario wines, mused. (The unspoken answer being, essentially, no – since our local rosés are so versatile.) “I like to sip a chilled glass on the patio. As far as food, though, I’d go for burgers and salad.” In either situation, the substantial yet lively 13th Street Pink Palette Rosé would fit the bill nicely. “You might think this is weird,” began Paul Farrell, category manager for European wines (he prefaces quite a few of his statements this way), “but, I prefer them with grilled lamb. Rosés with bright acidity, like classic examples from France and many of the bright, dry versions from Ontario,” such as the Tawse Sketches of Niagara Rosé, “cut through the meaty, gamey flavours and freshen up the palate – a bit like mint does.” ‘‘ ‚‚ ... with Ontario rosé, there really is no wrong answer. Personally, I find Ontario rosés make happy partners for chicken fajitas, or grilled stuffed bell peppers, or barbecued white pizza with garlic and herbs and a blend of two or three (or five) of your favourite cheeses. Any of the wines featured here would complement these foods. But, hey, these are just some ideas to get you started.
