We are looking for parishioners who would be willing to pick up and drop off some of our members for church services who can no longer drive. If you feel this is something you would like to help with please sign up on the bulletin board across from the church office. Questions? Contact vestry liaison, Becky Olbon at [email protected]. LABYRINTH COMING TO SNELLVILLE: The Snellville Arts Commission has announced the building of a walking labyrinth in the new Veterans’ Memorial Park and is working on funding. Although they have not come to St Matthew’s directly we have a unique opportunity; sponsors of $500 or more will get their name on the plaque at the site. Since St. Matthew’s appreciates the use and meaning of a labyrinth and we are located in Snellville, we thought it would be great to get our name on the plaque and in the community. If the labyrinth in Snellville is of interest to you instead of sending funds directly to SAC consider making your donation through St. Matthew’s Outreach; please put “Labyrinth” in the memo. More information can be found on the Outreach bulletin board or you can reach out to Judy Leavell or Cheryl Wheeler.. FAMILY PROMISE will be at St. Matthew's beginning May 31st and leaving June 14th. Sign up to help out in one or more of the following ways: make dinner for the families, spend the night (sheets, blankets, and beds are provided), serve as an evening or day host, or donate gift cards from Wal-mart, Target or Kroger. Sign-up sheets are posted in the parish hall. If you have any questions, please contact Becky Olbon at 770-923-9186 or [email protected]. How will you help welcome these guests to St. Matthews? THIS SUMMER THE SOUTHEAST GWINNETT COOPERATIVE MINISTRY will be providing “manna bags” to children who participate in the free and reduced breakfast and lunch program at school. When school is out they need our help to have those meals. Each bag contains a healthy and tasty lunch, plus breakfast items and snacks. Last year, over 7,000 bags were distributed to these children! St. Matt’s will be collecting and donating one item for these bags, and that is Pop Tarts (toaster pastries, any brand or flavor accepted!). Washcloths are also needed, as each child will receive a hygiene bag. There will be a special collection bin located next to the regular bin near the parish hall for all of these items. Volunteers are needed: Wednesday, May 27 and Friday, May 29., as Distributors of the Manna bags to the children: shift is approximately 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Please contact Michael or Mindy Barringer with any questions, and please see Outreach bulletin board for more information, and sign up volunteer sheet. YOGA CLASSES: Each Saturday we will have yoga sessions, 9:00 - 9:45 a.m. in the Undercroft. These classes are free to members of St. Matthew’s. ILDI MEZEY STARTED THE FLOWER GUILD here over a year ago. She did the research, took classes and invested untold hours planning, buying, conditioning, arranging, planting, and watering flowers for this parish. She coached and trained the current members of the guild, and set up systems of organization and routines that have kept the guild moving forward in her absence. Ildi and her husband, Stuart, moved from Lawrenceville to Cumming in January, where she is now using her talents in the Flower Guild at the Church of the Holy Spirit. The Flower Guild and the Parish of St. Matthew's would like to recognize and thank Ildi for her leadership and hard work in pioneering this new ministry. PASSALONGS: There is a wonderful tradition among gardeners of sharing plants with one another. These plants are considered "passalongs." Do you have an abundance of any plants that you would like to share with the church? The Garden Guild is looking for mostly shade plants, but would like a few sunny ones too. Please call or email Janis Williams, 770-3674930, [email protected] if you have something to contribute to this garden along the drive to the back parking lot. ST. MATTHEW’S IS OFFERING THE “CHRIST WALK” program for the 50 days of Easter. The Collect of the Day O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen The First Lesson: Acts 10: 44-48 Lector: A Reading from Acts. While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, "Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. A CRYING ROOM is available in the back of the sanctuary with speakers, so you can clearly hear the service. 6 11 The Epistle: 1 John 5:1-6 Lector: A reading from the First Letter of John. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. Lector: People: The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. The Hymn: #455 “O Love of God, how strong and true” Dunedin Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. The Breaking of the Bread The Gospel: John 15:9-17 The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Fraction Anthem, WLP 877: “The disciples knew the Lord Jesus” Communion of the People All are welcome at the Lord’s Table. If you would like to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion, extend your hands, palms crossed and upward. You may consume the bread or wait, retaining it to dip it in the wine. To drink wine from the chalice, please assist in guiding the cup to your lips by holding the base of the cup. Those desiring prayers for healing should hold up their hands as the Priest approaches. If you wish simply to receive a blessing, you may cross your arms across your chest. [10:30] Communion Music “Fanfare” St. Matthew’s Handbell Choir Michael Helman “In Christ there is no east or west” “In your mercy, Lord you called me” “Lord, we have come at your own invitation” McKee Halton Holgate O quanta qualia Communion Hymns: Hymn, 529 Hymn, 706 Hymn, 348 10 Jesus said to his disciples, "As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another." Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon: The Reverend Canon Elizabeth Hendrick 7 The Nicene Creed (stand) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. BCP, pg. 358 THE HOLY COMMUNION The Offertory Hymn #700 We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, “Christ is our Cornerstone” Sanctuary Choir D.Thorne “O love that casts out fear” Mosely Eucharistic Prayer C God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. BCP, page 369 Sanctus: Hymnal, S-129 For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People Form III During the Great Fifty Days of Easter the people remain standing. The Eucharistic Prayer continues BCP, pg. 387 BCP, page 371 The Lord’s Prayer Dan Mitchell The Peace All stand. The Celebrant says to the People. People: The peace of the Lord be always with you.
