Celebrant: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People: And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Celebrant There is one Body and one Spirit; People: There is one hope in God’s call to us; Celebrant: One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; People: One God and Father of all. Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray. Celebrant: Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. People: Amen. THE FIRST READING Read by Brian Schoeneman. Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16 Please be seated. Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. Let marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I will never leave you or forsake you." So we can say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?" Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 2 HYMN 656 (stanzas 1 and 2) Sung by all, standing. Words: Music: Copyright: Blest are the pure in heart Sts. 1 and 3, John Keble (1792-1866), alt.; sts. 2 and 4, William John Hall (1793-1861), alt. Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. THE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 14:1, 7-14 On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, `Give this person your place,' and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, `Friend, move up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. 3 HYMN 656 (stanzas 3 and 4) Blest are the pure in heart Sung by all. THE SERMON The Rev. D. Andrew Olivo Please be seated. People: It is right to give God thanks and praise. Celebrant: We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. People: Amen. THE BAPTISM 6 WELCOMING HYMN 490 I want to walk as a child of the light Please stand. The Choir sings the verses and the People sing the refrain. 1. I want to walk as a child of the light. I want to follow Jesus. God set the stars to give light to the world. The star of my life is Jesus. Refrain In him there is no darkness at all. The night and the day are both alike. The Lamb is the light of the city of God. Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus. 2. I want to see the brightness of God. I want to look at Jesus. Clear sun of righteousness, shine on my path, and show me the way to the Father. Refrain 3. I’m looking for the coming of Christ. I want to be with Jesus. When we have run with patience the race, we shall know the joy of Jesus. Refrain Celebrant and People: Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised him to the new life of grace. Sustain him, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give him an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Celebrant: Let us welcome the newly baptized. Celebrant and People: We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. THE PEACE Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you. Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give God thanks and praise. Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in Jesus Christ our Lord you have received us as your sons and daughters, made us citizens of your kingdom, and given us the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: SANCTUS AND BENEDICTUS (WLP 785) Santo, santo, santo Sung in Spanish and then in English. Words: Music: Copyright: Variation on a traditional liturgical text Composer of melody unknown; arr. based on a two-part version as taught by Pablo D. Sosa (b. 1933) Reprinted under Onelicense.net # A-701275. Please stand or kneel. Celebrant: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. 9 He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Celebrant: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. People: AMEN. THE LORD’S PRAYER Celebrant: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Celebrant and People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD Celebrant: Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia! Celebrant: The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. 10 All are welcome to receive Holy Communion with us. Our tradition is to receive both bread and wine, sharing in the common cup. Please assist the chalice bearer by guiding the cup to your lips. You may also intinct by dipping the wafer into the chalice. You may wish to receive the bread only. Receiving the bread only is a valid and acceptable way to share in Holy Communion. After consuming the wafer, simply cross your arms over your chest to indicate that you do not wish to receive the wine. Gluten-free wafers are available on request from the communion minister. If you are feeling sick, please refrain from receiving the wine and be mindful of those near you when passing the peace or shaking hands as you enter and exit the church. PASTORAL CARE AND PRAYER LIST CHANGES Praying for the sick and those in need is a vital part of our life as a faith community. I want to update you on three changes that are going to take place regarding the parish prayer list and pastoral care. OUR PRAYERS are requested for the special needs and concerns of this congregation, especially: Those who are sick or recovering: The first change is that we are going to begin incorporating the parish prayer list into the e-newsletter that goes out every Wednesday. That means that beginning in August the weekly pastoral care email will no longer be sent out. We’re doing this for several reasons: 1. We want prayer to be an integral part of the parish; 2. The weekly Leaflet reaches a much larger audience than the pastoral care email; 3. The parish staff is working to communicate in a more efficient and effective way. From our parish: Margo Arnold, John Culver, Chet Grey, Ruth Harwood, Kenny Kraft, Jesus López, Jim Mullins, Leah Proffitt, and Denzel Ramirez. Friends and family of our parish: Melissa Black (Ann Mueller), Bill Clark (Clark Ervin), Marcia Delucchi (Chris Delucchi), Sender Dias Duarte (Sandra Franco), Henry Farrington (Samuel Watson), Sarah Flynn (Ellen Parke), Zariyah Frazier (Alexian Wines Semkow), Tyrone Gayle (Jessica Sanchez), Craig Harmon (Judy McKevitt), Deanna Kinsfather (Laurie Adams), Christy Long (Karen Zachary), Abilia Cárdenas de Ma (Araceli Ma), Rosemary Mariner (Carolyn Becraft), James Millin (Cay Buser), Timothy Mullins (Jim Mullins), Judy Nicola (Cynthia Walker), Nancy Norelli (Betsy Heine), Lisa O’Brien (Pamela Venzke), Susan Parsons (Carolyn Becarft), Paul Pilling (Ellen Parke), Carolyn Pitts (Ashley Litzenberger), Edward Rebok (Ellen Parke), Terry Sinclair (Wande Johnson), Jim Tatosian (Pat Dalby), Eve Thompson (Joanne Hutton), Mark Van Note (Pat and Jim Czerwonky), Martha Warren (Kaye Edwards), Chip Williams (Serina Freeman), and Peter Winkler (Betty van Iersel). The second change is that we are going to work to regularly update the parish prayer list. Other than birthdays, anniversaries, and deaths, names added to the prayer list will appear for four consecutive weeks and after that they will be removed. If parishioners would like a name to be on the prayer list for a shorter or longer period of time, they just need to let us know. The final change is that we are going to begin listing in parentheses the name of the person requesting prayers for family and friends who are not members of the congregation. We hope this will make it easier to identify particular prayer needs. Those who are in the hospital: From our parish: Gordon Richmond. So what do you need to do? First, if you aren’t subscribed to the weekly Leaflet, please email Serina Freeman at [email protected] and she will add you to that list. Second, keep the clergy and staff updated on any pastoral care and prayer needs for yourself and others. Third, be patient with us. Change often means that kinks have to be worked out and that things won’t be perfect at first. We will get there. Finally, and most importantly, keep praying. Friends and family of our parish: Lloyd S. Charters, Jr. (Andrea Charters), Julie Howell (Cynthia Walker), Ernest Kirby (Geegee Bryant), Mattie Pitts (Ashley Litzenberger), George Wilkins, Sr. (Geegee Bryant). Those who are in hospice: Friends and family of our parish: Roger Block (John Peters Irelan). If you have any questions, please contact the Rev. Andy Olivo at [email protected]. 22 FLOWER MEMORIALS IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE ALTAR, CHAPEL, OR NARTHEX FLOWERS for Sunday services, in memory of or thanksgiving for a person or event, please contact the parish office at 202-347-8766. JOHN’S CHURCH, we believe Christ is calling us to be a renewed church in a changing world. Empowered by the Spirit of God, we respond to Jesus’ call as we deepen our bond with Christ through worship, become a community where all are accepted, and work together as laity and clergy to do God’s work in the world. ST JOHN’S WAS ORGANIZED IN 1815 to serve as a parish church for Episcopalians residing in the neighborhoods in the west end of the District of Columbia. Its cornerstone was laid on September 14, 1815, and it was consecrated on December 27, 1816. Beginning with James Madison, every person who has held the office of President of the United States has attended a service at the church. Several Presidents have been communicants. Thus, St. John’s is often referred to as the “Church of the Presidents.” Pew 54 is the President’s Pew. The architect of the church was Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who assisted in the rebuilding of the U.S. Capitol and the White House after the War of 1812. Twentyfive of the stained glass windows in St. John’s were designed and executed by artisans of the noted Lorin firm of Chartres, France. BROCHURES DESCRIBING PARISH LIFE, the history of St. John’s, and the Episcopal denomination can be found in the church entrance. If you are visiting, please fill out the visitor information card found at the end of each pew to enable us to welcome you personally into the life of our parish. ST JOHN’S WEBSITE WWW.STJOHNS-DC.ORG has up-to-date information about the Church including the weekly calendar, the Sunday service schedule, Adult Forum speakers and topics, the music calendar and newsworthy events.
