THE FIRST READING
Read by Holly Sukenik.
Genesis 15:1-6
Please be seated.
The word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, "Do not be afraid, Abram, I am
your shield; your reward shall be very great." But Abram said, "O Lord GOD, what
will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of
Damascus?" And Abram said, "You have given me no offspring, and so a slave
born in my house is to be my heir." But the word of the LORD came to him, "This
man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir." He
brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are
able to count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your descendants be." And he
believed the LORD; and the LORD reckoned it to him as righteousness.

Happy is the nation whose God is the LORD!
happy the people he has chosen to be his own!
The LORD looks down from heaven,
and beholds all the people in the world. Refrain.
From where he sits enthroned he turns his gaze
on all who dwell on the earth.
He fashions all the hearts of them
and understands all their works. Refrain.
There is no king that can be saved by a mighty army;
a strong man is not delivered by his great strength.
The horse is a vain hope for deliverance;
for all its strength it cannot save. Refrain.
Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon those who fear him,
on those who wait upon his love,
To pluck their lives from death,
and to feed them in time of famine. Refrain.

Our soul waits for the LORD;
he is our help and our shield.
Indeed, our heart rejoices in him,
for in his holy Name we put our trust.
Let your loving-kindness, O LORD, be upon us,
as we have put our trust in you. Refrain.
THE SECOND READING
Read by Virginia Bader.
Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the
worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from
things that are not visible. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out
for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing
where he was going. By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been
promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were
heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city that has
foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith he received power of
procreation, even though he was too old-- and Sarah herself was barren-- because
he considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one person, and this
one as good as dead, descendants were born, "as many as the stars of heaven and
as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore." All of these died in faith
without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted
them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for
people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If
they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had
opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly
one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared
a city for them.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
People:
Glory to you, Lord Christ.
THE HOLY GOSPEL
Luke 12:32-40
Jesus said to his disciples, "Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good
pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make
purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where
no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your
heart will be also."Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who
are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may
open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves
whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt
and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. If he comes during
the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves.
"But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was
coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, for
the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour."

THE SERMON
The Rev. Dr. Luis León
Please be seated.
THE NICENE CREED
Please stand.
Celebrant and People:
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only
Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came
down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from
the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under
Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose
again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated
at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living
and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the
Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the
Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We
acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the
resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. AMEN.

And also with you.
Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People:
It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to
you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a new people in Jesus Christ our
Lord, to show forth your glory in all the world.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with
all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of
your Name:

Celebrant: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and,
when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your
mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to
live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
9
He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your
will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took
bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples,
and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the
remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to
them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink
it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Celebrant and People:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
Celebrant: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise
and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you
these gifts.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your
Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that
we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy,
and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your
eternal kingdom.
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in
the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and
for ever.
People:
AMEN.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Celebrant: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Celebrant and People:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and
the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD
Celebrant: Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People:
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia!
Celebrant: The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ
died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
10
All are welcome to receive Holy Communion with us. Our tradition is to receive
both bread and wine, sharing in the common cup. Please assist the chalice bearer by
guiding the cup to your lips. You may also intinct by dipping the wafer into the
chalice. You may wish to receive the bread only. Receiving the bread only is a valid
and acceptable way to share in Holy Communion. After consuming the wafer,
simply cross your arms over your chest to indicate that you do not wish to receive
the wine. Gluten-free wafers are available on request from the communion minister.
If you are feeling sick, please refrain from receiving the wine and be mindful of those near
you when passing the peace or shaking hands as you enter and exit the church.
MUSIC AT THE COMMUNION
Anthem
Blessed are the pure in heart
Malcolm Archer
(b. 1952)
The Summer Choir
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see our God; the secret of the Lord is
theirs, their soul is Christ's abode. The Lord who left the heavens our life and peace
to bring, to dwell in lowliness with us, our pattern and our King. Still to the lowly
soul he doth himself impart, and for his cradle and his throne chooseth the pure in
heart. Lord, we thy presence seek, may ours this blessing be: give us a pure and
lowly heart, a temple meet for thee.

LATROBE YOUNG ADULTS FELLOWSHIP
SUMMER BRUNCH
Sunday, August 14, after the 10:30 a.m. service
The Latrobe Fellowship is taking a break from our First
Wednesday services for the summer, but we'd like to invite
you to join us for brunch on Sunday, August 14 after the 10:30
a.m. service! We'll gather outside the church at the corner of
16th & H streets and walk to a nearby restaurant. Contact
Matthew Taylor at [email protected] with any
questions or restaurant suggestions. The Latrobe
Fellowship at St. John's Church is an active and engaged
group of adults, both singles and couples, primarily in their
20s and 30s. For more information about the Latrobe
Fellowship, please contact the Rev. Sarah Miller at
[email protected].
ATTENTION GW STUDENTS, ALUMNI, AND STAFF
The Episcopal Diocese of Washington is working to restart

they need your ideas and help. If you are interested in
welcoming new students in August, sharing ideas about
wants and needs, or being part of this group, email the
Rev. Andy Olivo at [email protected] for more
information.
JOIN THE SUMMER CHOIR!
Singers, whether experienced or not-so-experienced, are
invited to sing in the choir on Sunday mornings at St. John's
through Labor Day Weekend. Members of both the St.
John's and Parish Choirs will be on hand to lend their voices

between the Church and the Parish House.

PASTORAL CARE AND PRAYER LIST CHANGES
Praying for the sick and those in need is a vital part of
our life as a faith community. I want to update you on
three changes that are going to take place regarding the
parish prayer list and pastoral care.
The first change is that we are going to begin
incorporating the parish prayer list into the e-newsletter
that goes out every Wednesday. That means that
beginning in August the weekly pastoral care email will
no longer be sent out. We’re doing this for several
reasons: 1. We want prayer to be an integral part of the
parish; 2. The weekly Leaflet reaches a much larger
audience than the pastoral care email; 3. The parish
staff is working to communicate in a more efficient and
effective way.
ST. JOHN’S CHURCH IS FEATURED IN THE
PRESIDENT’S NEIGHBORHOOD EXHIBITION AT
THE DECATUR HOUSE MUSEUM
St. John’s Church is featured in The President’s Neighborhood
Exhibition at the Decatur House Museum, off Lafayette
Square. The exhibition is open until September 27, from
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday – Saturday. The
exhibition is closed Labor Day, September 5. After you visit
the exhibition and learn about these historic landmarks, you
can walk the President’s Neighborhood to see them for
yourself.
The second change is that we are going to work to
regularly update the parish prayer list. Other than
birthdays, anniversaries, and deaths, names added to the
prayer list will appear for four consecutive weeks and
after that they will be removed. If parishioners would
like a name to be on the prayer list for a shorter or
longer period of time, they just need to let us know.
STAINED GLASS WINDOWS
Stained Glass by Shenandoah has removed two more windows
for repair: number 15, the Carroll Window (facing west from
the south transept), and number 11, the Smith Window (in the
organ console chamber). Both will be disassembled, cleaned,
repaired as necessary, and reassembled with new lead
came. They should be returned to us in early fall.
The final change is that we are going to begin listing
in parentheses the name of the person requesting
prayers for family and friends who are not members
of the congregation. We hope this will make it easier
to identify particular prayer needs.
So what do you need to do? First, if you aren’t
subscribed to the weekly Leaflet, please email Serina
Freeman at [email protected] and she will
add you to that list. Second, keep the clergy and staff
updated on any pastoral care and prayer needs for
yourself and others. Third, be patient with us. Change
often means that kinks have to be worked out and that
things won’t be perfect at first. We will get there.
Finally, and most importantly, keep praying.
ALTAR RAIL KNEELER
The Center Section of the Altar Rail Kneeler will be out of
service for several weeks as we assess its condition and make
repairs. We will substitute the wedding kneeler for that
period.
TWO EASY WAYS TO HELP OTHERS
• The empty casserole pans in the Parish House are waiting to
be filled with food for our partnership with So Others Might
Eat (S.O.M.E.). St. John’s is committed to sending food once
a month to S.O.M.E. to be served in a meal program for
homeless and low-income persons in D.C. Participation is
easy and flexible! Pick up an empty casserole pan in the
Parish House, fill it with a casserole, and drop it off in the

IF YOU ARE VISITING
a warm welcome to St. John’s.
We are delighted to have you worship with us. Please let us know who you are and how we can best serve you
by filling out a “Welcome” card and leaving it in the offering plate or with an usher or greeter, and joining us for
the coffee hour following the service.
We welcome families with young children at our worship services. Children’s Worship Bulletins are available
from the ushers as you enter the nave. For parishioners and visitors alike, nursery care for children under age
three is provided on Sunday from 9:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The nursery is located next to the elevator on the
lower level of the Parish House. Take the elevator or stairs to the basement.
All persons, including children, are invited to take part in the Holy Eucharist. Parents may decide if their
children receive the bread and/or wine. Children may instead signal their desire to be blessed by the priest at the
altar by crossing their arms across their chest.

Welcome!
AT ST. JOHN’S CHURCH, we believe Christ is calling us to be a renewed church in a changing world. Empowered
by the Spirit of God, we respond to Jesus’ call as we deepen our bond with Christ through worship, become a
community where all are accepted, and work together as laity and clergy to do God’s work in the world.
ST JOHN’S WAS ORGANIZED IN 1815 to serve as a parish church for Episcopalians residing in the neighborhoods
in the west end of the District of Columbia. Its cornerstone was laid on September 14, 1815, and it was
consecrated on December 27, 1816. Beginning with James Madison, every person who has held the office of
President of the United States has attended a service at the church. Several Presidents have been
communicants. Thus, St. John’s is often referred to as the “Church of the Presidents.” Pew 54 is the President’s
Pew. The architect of the church was Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who assisted in the rebuilding of the U.S.
Capitol and the White House after the War of 1812. Twenty-five of the stained glass windows in St. John’s
were designed and executed by artisans of the noted Lorin firm of Chartres, France.
BROCHURES DESCRIBING PARISH LIFE, the history of St. John’s, and the Episcopal denomination can be found in
the church entrance. If you are visiting, please fill out the visitor information card found at the end of each
pew to enable us to welcome you personally into the life of our parish.
ST JOHN’S WEBSITE WWW.STJOHNS-DC.ORG has up-to-date information about the Church including the weekly
calendar, the Sunday service schedule, Adult Forum speakers and topics, the music calendar and newsworthy
events. If you’ve lost your copy of the weekly leaflet or monthly The Word, you can find them on the website.
