Prices: Single copies £1.70, subscription to four issues £6.20. Please make cheques/POs payable to "Chartwatch" and cross them "a/c payee". You can pay by
TRANSCASH or GiroBank transfer, but this is expensive! Our Giro account number is 28 807 6508. There is a 13 euros charge for the sender and a £10 bank fee
charged to us which we have to pass on to the customer. Please do not send coins or stamps as payment.
European subscribers can subscribe for £13.50 (air mail only). Individual copies cost £3.40. These subscription rates also apply to the Republic of Ireland. Please
remember that we can no longer accept Irish postal orders or Eurocheques.
Other overseas subscribers: Please send us £11.50 (surface mail) or £18.00 (airmail). Single copies cost £2.90 (surface mail) or £4.50 (air mail). If you pay by
cheque drawn on a bank outside the UK, please add an extra £10 to cover bank charges; this applies particularly to US readers!
Giro transfer: Our Giro account number is 28 807 6508. Please note that Girobank is now charging £10 for international Giro transfers. Unfortunately, this must be
passed on to our overseas customers. Because the UK is not part of the euro-zone, this also applies to customers from the European Union.
PayPal: You can order Chartwatch over the Internet using our PayPal account, which means you can pay by credit card. This is especially useful to overseas
readers. Please see our website for order forms: www.chartwatch.co.uk.
PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS, AND THE ISSUE NUMBER OR DATE FROM WHICH THE SUBSCRIPTION IS TO RUN.
Back numbers: Back numbers to all issues are available at £1.70 per copy. The CHARTWATCH yearly summaries are also available: 1983 - £1.40, 1984 - £1.50,
1985-1994 - £2.00, 1995-2008 - £2.50, 1961-1967 - £1.20. The index for issues 36-55 costs £1.50 and for 1-35 £1. To ensure delivery within 28 days, please restrict
your order to no more than ten of any of the above. Because not all back issues are in stock, it may be necessary to send orders in several packages as they become
available. For overseas orders, please enclose an extra £3.50 postage and handling charge per issue for air mail delivery (1.90p for surface mail), and if payment is
in foreign currency, an extra £10 for bank exchange costs. If you pay by a cheque drawn on a bank outside the UK, please add an extra £10 to cover bank charges.
Note that pdf versions of a growing number of back issues are available from www.chartwatch.co.uk for free download.
NOTES TO CONTRIBUTORS: CHARTWATCH is always pleased to receive contributions (and photographs) from readers. Please keep articles as brief as
possible. A page is about 1500 words, and anything longer will have to be of exceptional interest to be included. We reserve the right to edit any material submitted.
We can't publish copyright material, so articles must be all your own work. Please credit chart or statistic sources, and retain a copy of your article (or enclose a
SAE if you want your article returned). Typewritten manuscripts or manuscripts on disc are preferred. You can submit articles by email to [email protected]
or [email protected]. Word format files are preferred, but we can also handle text files. Contributors get a free subscription to the next four issues only. Free issues
are distributed at the cheapest postage rate possible - readers wanting to receive their free copies at First Class or Air Mail will have to contribute the difference in
postage rates.
Please provide copy for the next CHARTWATCH by the end of February 2014. Copyright CHARTWATCH 2013 valid for the next fifty years. Users of the
CHARTWATCH sales-related points system and its underlying principle should cite CHARTWATCH as its originator (ref: Hancock, J.M. & Rawlings, N.D.

Decade 2003-2012
Little change at the top of the decade listing at the end of 2012, with Rihanna consolidating her position with another strong
year. Although entrenched in 2nd position in the list, Lady Gaga had a poor year in 2012 and her bubble appears to have
burst. The strongest challenger for upward movement in the top ten looks like Adele as many of the others have big scores
to lose in 2013. Kanye West? Who can tell. Of the movers further down, David Guetta looks strong but his peak may now
be passed. Big losers this time are Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Kings of Leon and Pink. All except Kings Of Leon are
having strong 2013s so may reverse their drops next year (Justin Timberlake even has the chance to win a second year in
2013 - he would be the first act to achieve this since Madonna).

Acts Dropping Below 1,000 pts in 2012
Most acts dropping out are unsurprisingly from the early noughties, the most lamented (in my household) being Missy
Elliott. Two mega successful old stagers dropped out: Queen and Celine Dion. Celine has started a comeback in 2013 and
might be able to revive her fortunes. Things look more difficult for Queen, though. A special mention for Scooter, who only
managed four years in the listing.

Acts Who Could Drop Below 1,000 pts in 2013
REM have been in decline for some time but will be missed. Sadly the White Stripes seem to be over, so they are also
unlikely to survive another year. Outkast were also good in their day. Bo! Selecta!

State Of The Acts At The Beginning Of 2013
With Take That inactive 2013 presents an opportunity for Adele to move into third place in the decade list and
second is a realistic longer term objective. Kanye West should also be moving up this list but YEEZUS hasn't
been a massive success. Eminem is doing well in 2013 and may preserve his ranking, and Justin Timberlake
could also stay in the top ten, but Coldplay's position looks more precarious.

No.1s - Where From?
Where To?
Chartwatchers are often obsessed by extremes - which recordings have stayed longest at No.1? Which have recorded the
sharpest rise or sharpest drop? There is another kind of thing we can learn from charts, though, and that is typical behaviour.
In this article we want to start looking at this by seeing where No1's (singles and albums) typically come from and go to.
This will clearly differ between the albums and singles charts, and will vary over time (it will also depend to a degree on the
length of the chart, if we consider new entries, some of which may have been in a longer chart the previous week - this is
actually less of an issue when considering typical behaviour than it is when considering extremes).
This analysis was stimulated by the highest entries analysis elsewhere in this issue, so we have started by looking at 2012,
the most recent year for which we currently have complete data. We've supplemented this by looking at 2007. Why 2007?
Well it was a year in which there were relatively few new entries in the singles charts, while there were a similar number of
No.1 entries in the albums chart. Hopefully, therefore, we will be able to learn something about the difference between years
with many and few No.1 entries.
Singles
The histograms below compare the relative proportions of recordings going from different positions in the chart to No.1
(including new entries: NE) and the fates of No.1 records, i.e. where No.1s went to in the week after being No.1. In both
cases, we've included No.1 as possible sources and fates of No.1's. The reason for this become clear when we compare 2012
and 2007.

It's plain from the first plot that the main difference between 2007 and 2012 as far as recordings going to No.1 is concerned
was the much higher proportion of records staying at No.1 in 2007. In fact there were only 18 No.1s in 2007 compared to 38
in 2012. Six of the 2007 No.1s were new entries (33%) compared to 25 of 2012's (66%) so the years differed in that respect,
but long-lived No.1s will, of course, have prevented a good number of new entries at 1, leading to a higher proportion of
recordings reaching No.1 from other positions. Taking a step back, it's clear that hitting No.1 from outside the Top 4 is
pretty unusual whatever the conditions at No.1, and doing so from outside the Top 10 even less likely. Of the 24 recordings
hitting the No.1 from within the Top 100, 17 did so from the Top 4 (71%) and 21 did so from the Top 10 (88%).

The difference in the patterns of recordings leaving No.1 between 2007 and 2012 superficially look even more interesting as
there are many more going to Nos 2 and 3 in particular in 2012. However this again a distortion brought about by the
number of weeks recordings stayed at No.1 in 2007. If we just look at drops from No.1, 53% in 2007 and 42% in 2012 were
to No.2. 88% of drops in 2007 and 89% in 2012 were to Top 4 positions.
Overall, then, there are two clear patterns in these data. Firstly, most No1's have been No.1 the previous week or are new
entries. Of he relatively few this doesn't apply to, the vast bulk of records rising to No.1 do so from the Top 4 or even the
Top 3. Similarly, most No.1s drop out into the Top 4 before subsiding. Much of this seems unsurprising, but it will be
interesting to see how this has changed over time, or if the Top 4 has always been the place to be - in the early days of the
chart most singles went to No.1 from within the chart and entering at No.1 was a rare achievement indeed.
Albums
Compared to the differences between the 2007 and 2012 singles charts, the album charts entries profiles look quite similar.
The numbers of new entries are almost identical but more albums stayed at No.1 in 2007 than in 2012. However this bias
was not as large as in the singles chart. No.1 albums not coming in as new entries were uniformly sourced from the Top 3 in
2007 (indeed there was a degree of churn, especially between 1 and 2, something these stats don't show up). By contrast in
2012 albums reached No.1 from further afield (as low as No.7).

To
The wider spread of positions from which albums reached No.1 in 2012 is mirrored in a wider range of positions to which
No.1 albums dropped in 2012 - many more dropped out of the Top 4. It's possible this reflects declining album sales
between 2007 and 2012 - album sales in the early eleventies are reaching crisis levels according to the industry at least.
138.1M albums were sold in 2007 compared to 100.5M in 2012. This means that sales differences between the higher
positions in the chart are closer and small sales differences can make a bigger difference to chart positions.
It's worth noting that singles sales were more than twice as high in 2012 (188.6M) as in 2007 (86.6M). This could well be
reflected in the longer stays of singles at No.1 in 2007.

What was the first number one single? Who had the most number one singles? Which single spend longest at number one?
Everything you thought you knew about the British singles charts is wrong. This book proves it. Back in 1948, Colin
Brown, once trumpeter Nat Gonella’s manager and A&R man at Nixa Records, thought it would be a good idea if Britain
had its own record sales chart. With his contacts in the music business, he was able to persuade record labels to give him
their weekly shipments data from which he was able to calculate charts back to 1940, and continued to do so until the New
Musical Express started its own chart in November 1952. Colin’s charts languished in his desk: although he had tried to get
them published, no-one was interested. Until now – and here they are. Right from the first number one, Vera Lynn’s We’ll
Meet Again on 8th Jan 1940, to Johnnie Ray’s Faith Can Move Mountains on 27th Oct 1952. The bulk of the book is the
weekly Top 30s (yes, the charts were longer than NME’s charts) over 242 pages, with three charts to a page. The artist, song
title, record label and record number are listed for each hit. This is followed by a list of number ones. Then comes a
Guinness-style index of artists with their hits, listed in date of entry order, with the highest position and weeks on chart for
each. Finally, there is an index of song titles, listing all the hit versions (because there were so many competing covers)
with the highest position and year.
So far, so good. But how accurate are these charts? Unfortunately, the only comparison for the same period is the sheet
music charts, and these probably sold in different quantities to the records, because effectively all the different cover
versions are merged in sheet music sales. So really the devil is in the detail: how many of these records are obscure and
forgotten, and are all the known big hits here. I once read that Donald Pears sold over two million records in 1950, so how
does this book compare? In fact, twelve hits are listed in 1950, with only Me And My Imagination making number 1. We
know that Bing Crosby was enormously successful during the Forties, but it is quite a shock to discover that he had 34 solo
number ones from 1940 to 1950, and another ten collaborations, far exceeding the number singles that either Elvis Presley
or the Beatles achieved. Given that Bing’s career started in the late twenties, he might easily have doubled that total during
the Thirties! We also know that one of the biggest sheet music hits of all time was Bless You; now we know that the Ink
Spots spent 63 weeks on the charts with that hit, being at number one from 11 Nov 1940 to 6 Jan 1941 (8 weeks), only to be
succeeded by their recording of Whispering Grass for a further four weeks. Judy Garland’s That Old Black Magic spent 14
weeks at number one in 1943; Teresa Brewer spent 12 weeks at number one with Music! Music! Music! in 1950.
Surprisingly, Here In My Heart by Al Martino first reached no.1 on 11 Aug 1952 and continued there for eight weeks, and
10

had dropped to no.5 in the last chart in the book (27 Oct 1952). We all knew that Three Coins In The Fountain was a
comeback record for Frank Sinatra in 1954, but how many of us expected a further nine number ones dating back to 1944?
Colin Brown’s charts are compiled from weekly shipments to record shops, basically sales representatives order sheets as
supplied to the wholesale and distribution centres. In principle, because they are based on total sales from all the record
shops, and not a selection of record shops (which is how charts are compiled today and have been since the NME charts in
1952), these charts may be the most accurate ever published. However, there is a downside: if shipments were used today to
compile the charts, then, because records can hang around in shops for weeks before they are sold (or returned), such charts
wouldn’t represent over-the-counter sales. Whether or not record shops kept fewer stock in the 1940s and 1950s is anyone’s
guess. Certainly, these charts are going to be the most accurate for the period we are ever going to get. They are also
remarkably complete, unlike the sheet music charts which are particularly patchy during the Blitz. That in turn raises a
question: during the 1940s and 1950s records were 12” that played at 78 rpm and were made from shellac, a resin secreted
by a scale insect known as the lac bug, which is found only in India and Thailand: this had to be imported, and surely that
didn’t happen during the war years – so where do the record sales come from?

Supergroups
At Chartwatch we like to classify things, and the place were bands from is one of these. However, if a band is formed from
well-known musicians who had played with other, successful bands, then assigning a place name to them is difficult.
Fortunately, there is a get-out: the term “supergroup”. The term was first applied to Cream when they formed in 1966. Eric
Clapton had been guitarist with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, and before that the Yardbirds; Jack Bruce has been, briefly,
bass player with Manfred Mann, and Ginger Baker had been drummer with the Graham Bond Organization. All three were
well known blues musicians, but in reality, only Eric Clapton had any major form of commercial success (with the
Yardbirds) which he then shunned to team up with the less pop orientated John Mayall. Which of course brings us to the
point of this article: can we identify and rank supergroups?
By definition a supergroup MUST contain more than one musician who had charted previously, either with another group or
as a soloist, when the group was formed. Only groups that have scored a thousand or more points are included.
In reality, the biggest supergroup in the British charts is ABBA, but none of members had charted in Britain before ABBA
was formed. All four members had charted separately as soloists in Sweden in the 1960s.

Dear Neil,
I note that in Chartwatch 103 (page 18) the “Top 20 Top 20” list for no.7 singles is absent, so with the help of the “Chart
Residency Records” (Chartwatch 9, pages 18-20), I suggest the following certainties, probables and possibles using
Guinness charts:
No.7 Single
How Do I Live – LeAnn Rimes
For The Good Times – Perry Como
See You Later Alligator – Bill Haley & His Comets
Bring A Little Water Sylvie/Dead Or Alive – Lonnie Donegan
The Special Years – Val Doonican
There Must Be A Way - Frankie Vaughan
Home Lovin’ Man – Andy Williams
April Love – Pat Boone
Shout – Lulu

I assume that Honey – Bobby Goldsboro and Drive – Cars just failed to make the no.2 and no.4 lists, but you have definitely
missed out from the latter: Let’s Walk That-A-Way – Doris Day & Johnnie Ray, which scored 435 points and should be
ranked 2nd. Check also John I’m Only Dancing – David Bowie, peaking twice at no.12, and Amoureuse – Kiki Dee at no.13,
Numb/Encore – Jay-Z no.14. Since your no.8 list was compiled Ho Hey – Lumineers has notched up 19 weeks in the
bottom half of the UK Top 20 scoring 234 points, which added to 18 pts for HP no.8 plus points accrued for places outside
will rank it at no.1.
Rob Coulson
Editor’s reply: How did I miss out the no.7 singles? Here is the missing list. Remember that the singles were rescored
using the 2010 sales-related points system, so scores are not directly comparable with those given in issue 9. I’ve
highlighted in bold the singles Rob suggested.

For the record, Bring A Little Water Sylvie/Dead Or Alive – Lonnie Donegan is no.42, scoring 171 points; Home Lovin’ Man
– Andy Williams is no.46 (166 pts); The Special Years – Val Doonican is no.59 (158 pts); and Shout – Lulu is no.135 (134
pts). Of the other singles that Rob mentioned, Honey – Bobby Goldsboro is 29th in the list of singles reaching no.2 (434
pts); Drive – Cars is 33rd in the list of no.4 singles (281 pts); Let’s Walk That-A-Way – Doris Day & Johnnie Ray is 27th in
the list of no.4 singles (300 pts); Amoureuse – Kiki Dee is 42nd in the list of no.13 singles (104 pts); Numb/Encore – Jay-Z &
Linkin Park actually reached no.3, and is ranked 92nd (272 pts). John I’m Only Dancing – David Bowie is two different
recordings of what is hardly even the same song, so the scores have been kept separate. But you are almost right about the
Lumineer’s HoHey which has scored 272 points and is currently the second best no.8 single three points behind Lonnie
Donegan’s Rock Island Line.

Minihits and Microhits
Back in issue 103, I presented list of the twenty most successful singles to have reached each position between no.20 and
no.1. This is a follow-up, listing the most successful singles that failed to reach the Top 20 (what I am calling minihits) and
those that failed to make the Top 40 (microhits). Not all records sell within a short period, and many linger in the charts but
never reach the higher regions of the charts. This is a familiar phenomenon in the albums chart, but occurs more rarely in
the singles chart.

This is a list of the most successful chart singles that failed to make the Top 20.

The minihit with the longest chart run is Dog Days Are Over - Florence & The Machine, which charted for 35 weeks. The
only other minihit to have been on the charts for thirty weeks is A Thousand Years - Christina Perri. The distribution per
year is interesting, revealing that, as you might expect, changes to the charts have led to changes in the occurrence of
minihits. There are no minihits until 1960, when the charts increased from a Top 30 to a Top 50. The oldest minihit in the
list is Green Jeans - Flee-Rekkers. The period 1961-1970 accounts for nearly half the minihits in the list, with the top year
being 1967 with five (there were none in 1966). When chart compilation was taken over by the British Market Research
Bureau, minihits (along with the chart breakers) disappeared during 1971-1980 (five minihits). From 1981 to 2006, there
are only five minihits in the list, despite the charts increasing to a Top 75 in 1978 and a Top 100 in 1982. The period 20072013 has nineteen minihits in the list, so clearly the inclusion of downloads in the charts in making a difference. The only
minihit from 2013 is Beautiful - Mariah Carey featuring Miguel.

Surprisingly, given that a Top 75 did not exist, this list includes twelve singles from before 1978, with the oldest being three
from 1961. There are five microhits from 1978, making it the year with the most. The period 1978-1989 accounts for 29
microhits, and the period 1990-2003 none at all. Clearly, reducing the chart back to a Top 75 had its effect. Since 2003
there are ten microhits in the list with the most recent from 2013: Laura Palmer – Bastille.
Top 100 Album Tracks in
the Singles Chart
Most albums contain a mix of tracks: some that were hits singles that have been added so that buyers who like to know what
they are buying are kept happy, fillers when the band ran out of tracks but needed to fill the space, and tracks that are hit
singles waiting to happen. A good album has little filler, lots of tracks that were hits or potential hits, but also something
else. That might be a track that is great but would never be a hit single, or something that comes from how the songs sit
together that provides the album with a veneer that is more than the sum of the parts. If great songs made great albums, then
every greatest hits compilation would be as highly regarded as Sgt Pepper or Dark Side Of The Moon. However, let’s
ignore all that and concentrate on the hits to be, or rather the album tracks that became hits. For this list I’ve assumed an
album track is a track that charted first on an album and subsequently charted as a single. There will be albums that didn’t
chart until after the track was a hit, but they are much harder to pin down, because release dates are harder to find. There
may also be singles that were subsequently added to a hit album to boost sales: if I’ve included any of these, please let me
know.

There are four albums that each have two tracks in the list above: Parallel Lines – Blondie, Spice – Spice Girls, Hot Shot –
Shaggy and Shock Value – Timbaland. The oldest albums are from 1964 (Along Came Jones – Tom Jones and Hard Day’s
Night – Beatles), but only three albums are from the Sixties (Revolver – Beatles is the third). There are examples from every
year since 1970, except 1979, 1984, 1990, and 1992. The year with most albums is 2006 with six (Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 –
Shakira, Eyes Open - Snow Patrol, Razorlight – Razorlight, B'Day – Beyoncé, Beautiful World - Take That and The Sweet
Escape - Gwen Stefani). Most of these album tracks were issued within a few weeks of the album being released. The
exceptions are: Heal The World – Michael Jackson (1 year and 1 month after the album was released), That Don’t Impress
Me Much – Shania Twain (1 year 3 months), I Don’t Want To Talk About It – Rod Stewart (1 year 6 months) and Imagine –
John Lennon (4 years 1 month).
High New Entries 2012
2012 saw 25 singles and 31 albums enter at No.1, meaning that in any given week we will often see a No.1 entry in one if
not both charts. The singles number is typical of the last four years (since 2009) but the albums number is up from 20 last
year and is the first time the number has reached 30 since 2007. Something must have changed to bring about such a jump
and an obvious possible cause is the reducing sales of albums as physical distribution becomes less important. If this is the
case we may see No.1 albums entries approaching the numbers seen in the singles chart in 2000, when there were 39 No.1
entries. Although the singles number is typical of recent years it represents a rebound from the low numbers (9 and 6) in
2006 and 2007, presumably as much as anything again reflecting the new dominance of downloads and the changes in chart
rules that have accompanied this.
Top 50 Singles Entries, 2012
If I'd asked you to name the most impressive chart entry of 2012, unless you'd been paying a lot of attention you'd have been
unlikely to have named Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen. Indeed I suspect you'd have gone for one of the big acts of the
year, such as Emeli Sande (the eventual winner). The high entries list, though, provides a different view of the year's charts
because it tells us about acts and recordings that are received enthusiastically rather than those who maintain their success
throughout the year, which is what determines our annual listing. If we look at who has most entries in this list, Emeli Sande
does indeed have two, but Will.I.Am (23rd in the annual ranking) has four entries and Rita Ora (16th) has three. So if you
wanted a hot single in 2012, you went to Mr I.Am.

Top 50 Album Entries, 2012
No point counting numbers in the albums chart of course. Gary Barlow tops this list on the back of his appalling, creepy role
at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations - he failed to make the singles list as, due to a mammoth scheduling error, the
equivalent single entered at No.11 before going to No.1. Still, maybe he thinks No.1 entries are below him nowadays. It's
interesting to see Olly Murs so high in the albums list - he has made a significant success of his career since finishing second
in the 2009 X Factor. Again, it's interesting how this list casts a slightly different light on the scene to the annual scores; it's
a good mix of the hot contemporary artists and more mainstream or well established like Keane (who have split up in 2013).
It also tells us that guitar music, rock or whatever is not dead yet with strong showings from the like of Muse and Jack
White. There's even some alternative stuff in here, like The XX, Jake Bugg and The Vaccines.

UK 3rd Quarter 2013
Bruno Mars remained in charge at the end of the third quarter but his lead was narrow (73 pts) and diminishing (he led by 91
pts over Emeli Sande at the half way mark). It looks, therefore, as though the run-in to Christmas will be the deciding phase
of the year, which looks like being a low-scoring one. Pharrell Williams, who features on the two biggest singles of the year,
and Justin Timberlake, who released an updated version of THE 20/20 EXPERIENCE at the end of September (too early to
affect this list) look like the ones to watch, but there is also a big push to come by One Direction, who are only just over 200
pts adrift so anything could happen. It will, in any case, be a pleasure to take apart the 1D/Beatles comparisons in the next
issue.
