Although entrenched in 2nd position in the list, Lady Gaga had a poor year in 2012 and her bubble appears to have burst. The strongest challenger for upward movement in the top ten looks like Adele as many of the others have big scores to lose in 2013. Kanye West? Who can tell. Of the movers further down, David Guetta looks strong but his peak may now be passed. Big losers this time are Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Kings of Leon and Pink. All except Kings Of Leon are having strong 2013s so may reverse their drops next year (Justin Timberlake even has the chance to win a second year in 2013 - he would be the first act to achieve this since Madonna). Two mega successful old stagers dropped out: Queen and Celine Dion. Celine has started a comeback in 2013 and might be able to revive her fortunes. Things look more difficult for Queen, though. A special mention for Scooter, who only managed four years in the listing. Kanye West should also be moving up this list but YEEZUS hasn't been a massive success. Where To? Chartwatchers are often obsessed by extremes - which recordings have stayed longest at No.1? Which have recorded the sharpest rise or sharpest drop? There is another kind of thing we can learn from charts, though, and that is typical behaviour. In this article we want to start looking at this by seeing where No1's (singles and albums) typically come from and go to. This will clearly differ between the albums and singles charts, and will vary over time (it will also depend to a degree on the length of the chart, if we consider new entries, some of which may have been in a longer chart the previous week - this is actually less of an issue when considering typical behaviour than it is when considering extremes). This analysis was stimulated by the highest entries analysis elsewhere in this issue, so we have started by looking at 2012, the most recent year for which we currently have complete data. We've supplemented this by looking at 2007. Why 2007? Well it was a year in which there were relatively few new entries in the singles charts, while there were a similar number of No.1 entries in the albums chart. Hopefully, therefore, we will be able to learn something about the difference between years with many and few No.1 entries. Singles The histograms below compare the relative proportions of recordings going from different positions in the chart to No.1 (including new entries: NE) and the fates of No.1 records, i.e. where No.1s went to in the week after being No.1. In both cases, we've included No.1 as possible sources and fates of No.1's. The reason for this become clear when we compare 2012 and 2007. . Singles Going To No.1 40 35 30 From 25 2007 2012 20 15 10 5 0 NE 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 35 85 Number It's plain from the first plot that the main difference between 2007 and 2012 as far as recordings going to No.1 is concerned was the much higher proportion of records staying at No.1 in 2007. In fact there were only 18 No.1s in 2007 compared to 38 in 2012. Six of the 2007 No.1s were new entries (33%) compared to 25 of 2012's (66%) so the years differed in that respect, but long-lived No.1s will, of course, have prevented a good number of new entries at 1, leading to a higher proportion of recordings reaching No.1 from other positions. Taking a step back, it's clear that hitting No.1 from outside the Top 4 is pretty unusual whatever the conditions at No.1, and doing so from outside the Top 10 even less likely. Of the 24 recordings hitting the No.1 from within the Top 100, 17 did so from the Top 4 (71%) and 21 did so from the Top 10 (88%). 8 CHARTWATCH 105 Singles Leaving No.1 40 35 30 To 25 2007 2012 20 15 10 5 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 20 Number The difference in the patterns of recordings leaving No.1 between 2007 and 2012 superficially look even more interesting as there are many more going to Nos 2 and 3 in particular in 2012. However this again a distortion brought about by the number of weeks recordings stayed at No.1 in 2007. If we just look at drops from No.1, 53% in 2007 and 42% in 2012 were to No.2. 88% of drops in 2007 and 89% in 2012 were to Top 4 positions. Overall, then, there are two clear patterns in these data. Firstly, most No1's have been No.1 the previous week or are new entries. Of he relatively few this doesn't apply to, the vast bulk of records rising to No.1 do so from the Top 4 or even the Top 3. Similarly, most No.1s drop out into the Top 4 before subsiding. Much of this seems unsurprising, but it will be interesting to see how this has changed over time, or if the Top 4 has always been the place to be - in the early days of the chart most singles went to No.1 from within the chart and entering at No.1 was a rare achievement indeed. Albums Compared to the differences between the 2007 and 2012 singles charts, the album charts entries profiles look quite similar. The numbers of new entries are almost identical but more albums stayed at No.1 in 2007 than in 2012. However this bias was not as large as in the singles chart. No.1 albums not coming in as new entries were uniformly sourced from the Top 3 in 2007 (indeed there was a degree of churn, especially between 1 and 2, something these stats don't show up). By contrast in 2012 albums reached No.1 from further afield (as low as No.7). It's possible this reflects declining album sales between 2007 and 2012 - album sales in the early eleventies are reaching crisis levels according to the industry at least. 138.1M albums were sold in 2007 compared to 100.5M in 2012. This means that sales differences between the higher positions in the chart are closer and small sales differences can make a bigger difference to chart positions. It's worth noting that singles sales were more than twice as high in 2012 (188.6M) as in 2007 (86.6M). This could well be reflected in the longer stays of singles at No.1 in 2007. Who had the most number one singles? Which single spend longest at number one? Everything you thought you knew about the British singles charts is wrong. This book proves it. Back in 1948, Colin Brown, once trumpeter Nat Gonella’s manager and A&R man at Nixa Records, thought it would be a good idea if Britain had its own record sales chart. With his contacts in the music business, he was able to persuade record labels to give him their weekly shipments data from which he was able to calculate charts back to 1940, and continued to do so until the New Musical Express started its own chart in November 1952. Colin’s charts languished in his desk: although he had tried to get them published, no-one was interested. Until now – and here they are. Right from the first number one, Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again on 8th Jan 1940, to Johnnie Ray’s Faith Can Move Mountains on 27th Oct 1952. The bulk of the book is the weekly Top 30s (yes, the charts were longer than NME’s charts) over 242 pages, with three charts to a page. The artist, song title, record label and record number are listed for each hit. This is followed by a list of number ones. Then comes a Guinness-style index of artists with their hits, listed in date of entry order, with the highest position and weeks on chart for each. Finally, there is an index of song titles, listing all the hit versions (because there were so many competing covers) with the highest position and year. So far, so good. But how accurate are these charts? Unfortunately, the only comparison for the same period is the sheet music charts, and these probably sold in different quantities to the records, because effectively all the different cover versions are merged in sheet music sales. So really the devil is in the detail: how many of these records are obscure and forgotten, and are all the known big hits here. I once read that Donald Pears sold over two million records in 1950, so how does this book compare? In fact, twelve hits are listed in 1950, with only Me And My Imagination making number 1. We know that Bing Crosby was enormously successful during the Forties, but it is quite a shock to discover that he had 34 solo number ones from 1940 to 1950, and another ten collaborations, far exceeding the number singles that either Elvis Presley or the Beatles achieved. Given that Bing’s career started in the late twenties, he might easily have doubled that total during the Thirties! We also know that one of the biggest sheet music hits of all time was Bless You; now we know that the Ink Spots spent 63 weeks on the charts with that hit, being at number one from 11 Nov 1940 to 6 Jan 1941 (8 weeks), only to be succeeded by their recording of Whispering Grass for a further four weeks. Judy Garland’s That Old Black Magic spent 14 weeks at number one in 1943; Teresa Brewer spent 12 weeks at number one with Music! Music! Music! in 1950. Surprisingly, Here In My Heart by Al Martino first reached no.1 on 11 Aug 1952 and continued there for eight weeks, and 10 CHARTWATCH 105 had dropped to no.5 in the last chart in the book (27 Oct 1952). We all knew that Three Coins In The Fountain was a comeback record for Frank Sinatra in 1954, but how many of us expected a further nine number ones dating back to 1944? Colin Brown’s charts are compiled from weekly shipments to record shops, basically sales representatives order sheets as supplied to the wholesale and distribution centres. In principle, because they are based on total sales from all the record shops, and not a selection of record shops (which is how charts are compiled today and have been since the NME charts in 1952), these charts may be the most accurate ever published. However, there is a downside: if shipments were used today to compile the charts, then, because records can hang around in shops for weeks before they are sold (or returned), such charts wouldn’t represent over-the-counter sales. Whether or not record shops kept fewer stock in the 1940s and 1950s is anyone’s guess. Certainly, these charts are going to be the most accurate for the period we are ever going to get. They are also remarkably complete, unlike the sheet music charts which are particularly patchy during the Blitz. That in turn raises a question: during the 1940s and 1950s records were 12” that played at 78 rpm and were made from shellac, a resin secreted by a scale insect known as the lac bug, which is found only in India and Thailand: this had to be imported, and surely that didn’t happen during the war years – so where do the record sales come from? However, if a band is formed from well-known musicians who had played with other, successful bands, then assigning a place name to them is difficult. Fortunately, there is a get-out: the term “supergroup”. The term was first applied to Cream when they formed in 1966. Eric Clapton had been guitarist with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, and before that the Yardbirds; Jack Bruce has been, briefly, bass player with Manfred Mann, and Ginger Baker had been drummer with the Graham Bond Organization. All three were well known blues musicians, but in reality, only Eric Clapton had any major form of commercial success (with the Yardbirds) which he then shunned to team up with the less pop orientated John Mayall. Which of course brings us to the point of this article: can we identify and rank supergroups? By definition a supergroup MUST contain more than one musician who had charted previously, either with another group or as a soloist, when the group was formed. Only groups that have scored a thousand or more points are included. In reality, the biggest supergroup in the British charts is ABBA, but none of members had charted in Britain before ABBA was formed. All four members had charted separately as soloists in Sweden in the 1960s. This is a follow-up, listing the most successful singles that failed to reach the Top 20 (what I am calling minihits) and those that failed to make the Top 40 (microhits). Not all records sell within a short period, and many linger in the charts but never reach the higher regions of the charts. There are five microhits from 1978, making it the year with the most. The period 1978-1989 accounts for 29 microhits, and the period 1990-2003 none at all. Clearly, reducing the chart back to a Top 75 had its effect. Since 2003 there are ten microhits in the list with the most recent from 2013: Laura Palmer – Bastille. Top 100 Album Tracks in the Singles Chart Most albums contain a mix of tracks: some that were hits singles that have been added so that buyers who like to know what they are buying are kept happy, fillers when the band ran out of tracks but needed to fill the space, and tracks that are hit singles waiting to happen. A good album has little filler, lots of tracks that were hits or potential hits, but also something else. That might be a track that is great but would never be a hit single, or something that comes from how the songs sit together that provides the album with a veneer that is more than the sum of the parts. If great songs made great albums, then every greatest hits compilation would be as highly regarded as Sgt Pepper or Dark Side Of The Moon. However, let’s ignore all that and concentrate on the hits to be, or rather the album tracks that became hits. For this list I’ve assumed an album track is a track that charted first on an album and subsequently charted as a single. There will be albums that didn’t chart until after the track was a hit, but they are much harder to pin down, because release dates are harder to find. Most of these album tracks were issued within a few weeks of the album being released. The exceptions are: Heal The World – Michael Jackson (1 year and 1 month after the album was released), That Don’t Impress Me Much – Shania Twain (1 year 3 months), I Don’t Want To Talk About It – Rod Stewart (1 year 6 months) and Imagine – John Lennon (4 years 1 month). High New Entries 2012 2012 saw 25 singles and 31 albums enter at No.1, meaning that in any given week we will often see a No.1 entry in one if not both charts. The singles number is typical of the last four years (since 2009) but the albums number is up from 20 last year and is the first time the number has reached 30 since 2007. Something must have changed to bring about such a jump and an obvious possible cause is the reducing sales of albums as physical distribution becomes less important. If this is the case we may see No.1 albums entries approaching the numbers seen in the singles chart in 2000, when there were 39 No.1 entries. Although the singles number is typical of recent years it represents a rebound from the low numbers (9 and 6) in 2006 and 2007, presumably as much as anything again reflecting the new dominance of downloads and the changes in chart rules that have accompanied this. Top 50 Singles Entries, 2012 If I'd asked you to name the most impressive chart entry of 2012, unless you'd been paying a lot of attention you'd have been unlikely to have named Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen. Indeed I suspect you'd have gone for one of the big acts of the year, such as Emeli Sande (the eventual winner). The high entries list, though, provides a different view of the year's charts because it tells us about acts and recordings that are received enthusiastically rather than those who maintain their success throughout the year, which is what determines our annual listing. If we look at who has most entries in this list, Emeli Sande does indeed have two, but Will.I.Am (23rd in the annual ranking) has four entries and Rita Ora (16th) has three. Gary Barlow tops this list on the back of his appalling, creepy role at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations - he failed to make the singles list as, due to a mammoth scheduling error, the equivalent single entered at No.11 before going to No.1. Still, maybe he thinks No.1 entries are below him nowadays. It's interesting to see Olly Murs so high in the albums list - he has made a significant success of his career since finishing second in the 2009 X Factor. Again, it's interesting how this list casts a slightly different light on the scene to the annual scores; it's a good mix of the hot contemporary artists and more mainstream or well established like Keane (who have split up in 2013). It also tells us that guitar music, rock or whatever is not dead yet with strong showings from the like of Muse and Jack White. It looks, therefore, as though the run-in to Christmas will be the deciding phase of the year, which looks like being a low-scoring one. Pharrell Williams, who features on the two biggest singles of the year, and Justin Timberlake, who released an updated version of THE 20/20 EXPERIENCE at the end of September (too early to affect this list) look like the ones to watch, but there is also a big push to come by One Direction, who are only just over 200 pts adrift so anything could happen. It will, in any case, be a pleasure to take apart the 1D/Beatles comparisons in the next issue.
