Performance
EXPERIENCE THE FLAVOR OF CUBAN MUSIC through the
salsa, timba, rumba and jazz fusion of New York’s Le Tematik,
the seasoned percussion of Latin artist Calixto Oviedo and
his band, Cuban Jazz Train. Le Tematik began in 2010 as an
ensemble for salsa and Cuban singers touring New York’s Tri
State area, but quickly became a first-call ensemble. Calixto
Oviedo is a Latin Grammy-nominated artist who has performed
with numerous internationally-known artists including Paquito
D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. He mixes
Afro Cuban music with New Orleans jazz in Cuban Jazz Train’s
ensemble of musicians.

“After Selma” Exhibit

RASHAAD MCFADDEN presents the
award-winning collection, “After Selma.”
It is a photographic reconsideration of
the 1965 civil rights march from Selma
to Montgomery, Ala. McFadden holds
an MFA from Savannah College of Art
and Design in Atlanta.

CLAUDIA RANKINE’S bestselling book, Citizen: An
American Lyric, uses poetry, essay, cultural criticism and
visual images to explore what it means to be an American citizen in a “post-racial” society. Citizen was the
winner of the 2015 Forward Prize for Best Collection,
the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry, the
NAACP Image Award, the PEN Open Book Award and
the LA Times Book Award for poetry. Citizen also holds
the distinction of being the only poetry book to be a
New York Times bestseller in the nonfiction category.

LUIS VALDEZ is regarded as one of the most influential
American playwrights living today and his Obie Award-winning theater company, El Teatro Campesino (The Farmworkers’ Theater) one of the most important political theatres of
the 1960-70s. His plays are read and performed around the
world and his films Zoot Suit and La Bamba are classics of the
American Latinx cinema. Valdez has won numerous awards
and recognitions and in 2007 was inducted into the College
of Fellows of the American Theatre.

SONYA CLARK

SONYA CLARK is chair of the craft and material
studies department at Virginia Commonwealth
University School of the Arts in Richmond, Va.
She credits her maternal grandmother, a tailor, for
her passion for the discipline, which focuses on
ceramics, glass, wood, fiber and metal. Clark has
exhibited her work in more than 300 museums
and galleries globally. She won an Art Prize Grand
Jurors co-prize in 2014 and a Smithsonian Artist
Research Fellowship, among other honors.

JUAN FELIPE HERRERA became the 21st U.S. Poet Laureate in
2015, the first Mexican American to hold the position. Librarian
of Congress James H. Billington said Herrera’s poems “contain
Whitman-esque multitudes that champion voices, traditions and
histories, as well as a cultural perspective” serving to illuminate
our larger American identity. Herrera wrote 30 books, including
collections of poetry, prose, and short stories. Influenced by Allen
Ginsberg, Luis Valdez and the Chicano Civil Rights Movement,
Herrera writes passionately about social issues.

LOS ANGELES BASED PIANIST TIMOTHY
DURKOVIC is a soloist and chamber musician. He has won awards at the Los Angeles
Liszt Competition, the Carmel Music Society
Competition and the San Diego Duo Piano
Competition. He served on the faculties of
Long Beach City College, Orange County
High School of the Arts and the University
of La Verne and has performed and arranged
music for clients including Christina Aguilera
and Dignity Health.

Ramanathan Bennett performs
throughout the world, and was the
first veena player to perform in Hong
Kong. She began experimenting with
the fusion of Indian classical music
and western styles in the 1990s when
she performed as a veena soloist in
Hamilton, N.Y. She also sang for the
feature film ‘The Guru’ and played
veena for the IMAX film ‘Everest.’

Emblem and Artifice:
Withered Symbols of the War
J. Jason Lazarus’s portfolio of photographs involves symbolism from World
War II. His chemigrams are printed on
kodabromide paper that expired five
days before the Hiroshima bombing. The brutal memories of trauma
are imprinted onto these artifacts of
the war. He is a University of Alaska
adjunct lecturer.
