We hope also to be adding exhibitors that can provide information on other important health issues that address back and leg pain, obesity, diet and some new innovations around wireless medicine and genomic sequencing that will soon play a significant role in the way different disease states are managed,” he continued. Along with the medical information and screenings, Rolf will also be bringing back again some of his fellow NFL Alumni to sign autographs and meet the attendees throughout the day as they visit the Wellness Zone. Chargers kicker Nick Novak, former Chargers kicker Rolf Benirschke and former Chargers kicker John Carney at the 2011Chargers Blood Drive. Former San Diego Chargers kicker Rolf Benirschke, whose need for some 80 pints of blood due to surgery for ulcerative colitis in 1979 initiated the first Chargers Blood Drive, is continuing the popular Wellness Zone health fair at this year’s Chargers Blood Drive XXXIV. We all recognize the importance of “knowing your numbers” to maintain good health but now, with new technologies and new medical sensors, it is easier than ever to take more responsibility for your own health. Rolf is excited to introduce some of the new companies working on behalf of all of us and to provide again blood pressure, cholesterol and general health screening for everyone who attends this year’s blood drive. “When you get older and hear of former teammates and coaches having strokes and heart attacks and dying, and then learn that with early diagnosis and proper treatment these issues can be avoided, you have to do something about it,” said Rolf. This year, Rolf wants to help Chargers Blood Drive participants learn more about a variety of important health issues that may be affecting them. “At the Blood Drive we start with blood pressure screening and good 3 “It means so much to me to be able to continue this program at the Chargers Blood Drive,” added Benirschke. “Thirty-four years ago this community came together for me and started something that has become one of the largest annual blood drives in the country. I’m still so grateful and appreciative of the people of San Diego and for what they did for me so many years ago. To be able to give something back by making people aware of the risks of some of the conditions they may have, as well as to help them find treatment and a solution for their illnesses is a great way for me to thank Rolf Benirschke speaking with a blood donor at the 2011 Chargers Blood Drive. them again for the kindness they extended to me so many years ago,” he said. Patient Spotlights Baby Waylon’s Story Baby Waylon Porteous was born on April 7th and shortly after birth was diagnosed with severe respiratory distress. He was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital. After several hours on a ventilator, the doctors didn’t think he would make it without the support of an ECMO (heart-lung) machine. The ECMO machine did all the work for his lungs and heart for 9 days, requiring dozens of units of blood. The following 13 weeks he had two surgeries and a total of 50 additional blood transfusions. Without the availability of blood Waylon would not be home today. Jennie, his mom, tells us, “our family is so thankful for the gift of blood that so many people have given, they truly saved my baby’s life.” 5-Year-Old Maya’s Story On July 9th 2007 Maya Hathaway, 5 ½ months, was admitted into Rady Children’s Hospital with a high-fever that would not go away and a very low blood count. For almost a week she had doctor’s baffled and then they found two tumors. Since then pediatric cancer has been at the center of the Hathaway family’s lives. So far Maya has gone through seven rounds of harsh chemotherapy, 5 total surgeries and 20+ blood transfusions. Through this all, she remains a very happy smiling child. Maya’s favorite things are music, dancing, singing & watching Elmo - she loves Elmo! Maya thinks the funniest people in the whole world are her Daddy and her big sister Tianah (age 13). She loves to laugh, sing and eat and she has a big family and lots of friends who loves her tremendously. Maya relapsed in January 2009, 3 weeks before her 2nd birthday, with a tumor on the cerebellum part of the brain. She remains strong as ever, completing every treatment with so much grace and strength - she is truly a miracle. YOU ARE HELPING US KEEP THE DRIVE ALIVE! Why Is There An Admission Charge to Chargers Blood Drive XXXIV? All attendees are asked for a $5 entry fee to enter the Grand Exhibit Hall at Chargers Blood Drive XXXIV ($1 for children under age 17; children 2 years and younger are free). In exchange, attendees will receive a commemorative Eric Weddle wristband. The funds raised today will be used to help replace three bloodmobiles that are not compliant with the State of California’s new, strict anti-pollution regulations. Each of our bloodmobiles cost more than $250,000. This is an urgent need as more than 50% of our blood supply comes from drives such as the Chargers Blood Drive. Donors may be refunded the $5 entry fee after they donate and may keep the commemorative wristband. Refunds will be given at the main entrance where the wristbands are being distributed. ATMs are located at the main lobby of the Town & Country Hotel and behind the Atlas Ballroom near the Royal Palm Salon Two. Thank you for your support today – Lives Depend On It. 4 Bangles, Baubles & Bolts!
