The weather was beautiful, the pool water was a little chilly for the adults, but not the children. The weekend finished with a fun filled day of activities and gathering with friends. Thank you to everyone that joined us, and I look forward to a great summer. The pool will be open with modified hours for the next two weeks. Hours are posted at the pool, in the newsletter and on the website. AquaTech will be back to manage the pool this summer. Kaitlyn Bochicchio is our pool manager, and she and her team have worked diligently to get the pool ready for the season. Daniel, Sonta and Frank have worked on all other areas inside the pool, and Greg and his team have put the final touches on all the landscaping inside and outside of the pool. I would like to thank everyone involved for preparing the pool for the upcoming season. Starting May 28th the Snack Bar & Lounge will stay open until 8:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. The Snack Bar will be open from 11:00am – 3:00pm on Mondays starting June 13th. I am proud to announce that our Junior Tennis Team finished with a 7-1 record. Our team consisted of 9 & 10 year olds competing in the 12 and under bracket. They just missed playing in the state finals based on a tiebreaker. Congratulations to those who participated on the team, and what a great job Francis has done with the junior program! Twilight Tennis is scheduled for June 3rd. The cost is $10 per player, and light hors d’ oeuvres will be provided. Contact Francis to sign up as this is always a fun evening of playing tennis and socializing. Spence Golf will be finishing their portion of the project in the next few weeks. Once all the greens have been graded to the final grid plans, the next phase will be completed by New Life Turf. John Brown and his team will start to sprig the greens with TifEagle Bermuda which will take two days to complete. The grass will take approximately 10-12 weeks to fully grow in depending on weather. We are still on target to open the beginning of September barring any setbacks. Temporary greens will be ready by the first week of July. Greg and his team will continue to work on other projects during this time. Christa Whaley has been part of the wait staff team for the past two years. Christa will be leaving the Club and pursuing her career as a nurse. I want to thank her for her work over the past two years, and wish her the best in her future endeavors. June kicks off with Music on the Patio on June 3rd. This is always a popular evening so call Dawn to make your reservation. Southern Cooking is our monthly theme buffet on June 8th. Please join us on June 2nd when we will be discussing Euphoria by Lily King. THERE WILL NOT BE A BOOK CLUB MEETING IN JULY Our book for August will be Down River by John Hart. Adam Chase has spent the last five years in New York City trying to erase his worst memories and the scorn and abandonment of his family. Then a phone call from his best friend awakens in him a torrent of emotion and pain. Having left North Carolina and its red soil for good, he never thought returning would be easy, and being remembered as a murderer doesn't help much. Within this small Southern town, John Hart explores the lengths to which people will go for money, family, and pure greed - and whether or not forgiveness is ever attainable. For more information contact Sandy Kahrau at [email protected]. New members are always welcome!! HOME COOKING Upcoming Events Music on the Patio Friday, June 3rd 7pm-10pm Music provided by R.J. Greg McDanel, CGCS Bermuda grass has finally started to grow because the night time temperatures have been in the 60 degree range constantly. We have sprayed, aerated, and fertilized Bermuda grass tees, fairways, and roughs. Sod that was cut from the forward tees has been used on green surrounds on #4, #5, #12, # 16, and #17. Eleven’s green, blue and white tee is growing in nicely. We plan to work on the white tee on #12. The greens staff has done a lot of work pruning and mulching the landscape beds around the pool and club house. Spence golf continues to make progress. They are installing drainage on the back nine greens and filling the green cavities with topsoil mix. The green’s topsoil mix will be wet and compacted before the final grading can take place. Once all greens have been graded, 42 inches of sod on the collars will be removed and graded, and new Tifgrand Bermuda grass sod will be installed. New forward tees will be laser graded and sodded with 419 Bermuda grass. We hope to be able to sprig the greens by the middle of June so we have time to grow in the greens to be ready for play by September 1st. If you have a Bermuda or Zoysia grass lawn, it is a good time to aerate and fertilize to promote growth. I recommend using a fertilizer that has at least 30 percent slow release nitrogen. You should always take a soil sample to determine any fertility deficiencies. The soil sample will also tell you if you need to add lime. Thank you for your support during the renovation project. I am looking forward to being able to open the course on September 1st. Please remember that proper attire is required. FROM THE GOLF PRO Jeff Avant, PGA The golf course renovation project is progressing nicely. The 18th green has taken it shape and looks really good. Spence golf is on schedule to complete its work and have the grass sprigged by mid-June. Please remember that the golf shop is open 8am5pm and reciprocal times can be made during these hours. When requesting a reciprocal time please try to give us as much information as you can such as desired play times and names of those playing with you. Father’s Day is just around the corner and the golf shop is open for great gift ideas for dad this season. Stop by and see what he may like for Father’s Day. I know many of you are anxious to complete the golf course renovation, but it still has two months to go. So why not come out and try some tennis. We have a variety of events, teams, social open play and lessons to help you pass that time quickly. Like golf, tennis is a sport of a lifetime! It is never too late to pick up a racket and give it a shot! Upcoming Events in June: Twilight Tennis Friday, June 3rd 6pm This is our monthly social event of doubles and mixed doubles. They finished the season in third place and just narrowly missed out on going to the state tournament at Lake Norman. Way to go team! Just a reminder we have clinics going on all throughout the summer for all levels of players. Please email [email protected] if you need more information or would like to come out and play. Tip of the Month: Make your Partner Better! Being a good doubles partner and teammate is vital to making the people around you better. Start with looking inward at all times There is no benefit from analyzing your partner’s shortcomings and certainly no benefit from acting like you are their coach. Your main goal is “what can I do better to help the team?” By playing with enthusiasm and holding back on critique, your partners will be more comfortable and more likely to bring their best game that day!
