WhenthedeviceischarginganaddiLonalyellowlightwillilluminatenexttothegreenpower lightindicaLngthatitischarging.Theyellowlightwillturnoffleavingonlythegreenpowerlight whenitisfullycharged. AblackneoprenecaseisprovidedtoassistinaOachingandsecuringtheCamRanger.Thecase hasacarabineertofacilitatehangingfromatripod,beltloop,etc.Donotjusthangthe CamRangerbythecableasitwillputstrainontheUSBconnectorsaswellaspossibly disconnect. TheCamRangerbaOeryisaccessiblebyremovingtheboOomcover. TheboOomcoveristhesidewiththeCamRangerserialnumber.Simplygraspthesideedge/ cornerofthecoverneartheUSBconnectorandpullbacktoremove.Toreplacethecover,first placethetwolowertabsintotheslotsandthensnapinthetop. Pressthe“Register”buOontoloadtheregistraLonviewseenbelow. ©CamRanger–PatentPending 5 Enterthe8-characterCamRangerserialnumber.Theserialnumberislocatedbothonthe boOomofthebackcoveraswellasabovethebaOeryunderneaththebackcover.Note:the serialnumbercontainsonlyleOersandNOnumbers. Pressthe“Register”buOontoregister.AmessageboxwillappearindicaLngregistraLonwas successfulandtheiOSdevicecanbeusedwiththeCamRanger.Exittheappandthenproceed withthesetupprocessasdetailedbelowintheCamRangerSetupsecLon. IfregistraLonfails,confirmInternetconnecLvityandtheCamRangerserialnumberbefore [email protected]. CamRangerSetup PowerontheCamRangerandconfirmthatallfourlightsbrieflyappear.TheCamRangerwill takeapproximately30secondsunLlitisfullyiniLalized. ThefirstLmetheuserconnectstoCamRangerfromaniOSdevice(iPad,iPhone,oriPodTouch), theiOSdeviceneedstoberegistered.SeetheCamRangerRegistraLonsecLonabove. OntheiOSdeviceconnecttoyourCamRangernetwork.TheSSIDwillbeCamRanger-###,with thelastthreecharactersmatchingthelast3charactersoftheCamRanger’sserialnumber.The passwordisthefull8charactersoftheCamRanger’sserialnumber.ThepasswordMUSTBE ENTEREDINALLCAPS.ThekeyboardonneweriOSversionscanbeputintocapslockbydouble tappingtheshifkey. ConnecttheCamRangertothecamerawiththeprovidedblackUSBcable.ThemaleAendis insertedintotheUSBportattheendoftheCamRanger,andtheotherendisconnectedtothe USBportofthecamera.Thenensurethecameraisturnedon.Whenthecameraisconnected andturnedonthegreenlightclosesttotheedgeoftheCamRangerdevicewilllight. LaunchtheCamRangeriOSapp.TheapplicaLonwillconnecttotheCamRangerandtheuser willbeabletocontrolthecamera. ForcommonproblemswithsetupandconnecLonrefertotheTroubleshooLngsecLonatthe endofthemanual. FirmwareUpdate ItisrecommendedtochecktheiOSappandfirmwareversionbeforeusingtheCamRangerto ensuretheyarethelatestversion.Theappmustbeatleast2.0andthefirmwareversion6to supportnetworkbridging,sharingfeatures,ortheCamRangerPTHubandMP-360(orMP101, Bescor,orHague).ToupdatetheCamRangerfirmware,visitcamranger.com/downloadsfor furtherinstrucLonsonupdate. Athumbnailmaybeselectedtoviewthecorrespondingimageforviewing.Theimageis downloadedanddisplayedinthemainimageview.Thecurrentlyselectedthumbnailis indicatedwithayellowoutline. WhenbothaJPGandRAWfileformatiscaptured,onlytheJPGthumbnailisdisplayed. JPGandRAWfilescanbeviewed.NikonTIFFfileswilldisplaythethumbnailbutthe associatedimagecannotbeviewed.ItshouldbenotedthattheNikonRAWfilessimply showsacompressedJPGversion.However,iftheimageissaveditwillsavethefullNEF file. Asmallred“R”icononthelowerrightofthethumbnailindicatesthatitisaRAWimage. Asmallgreen“T”indicatesTIFF,whilenoiconisusedtoindicateJPGformaOedimages. Note:onlythumbnailsforimagescapturedwithinthecurrentCamRangersessionwillbe displayed. iPhoneThumbnails ThethumbnailsontheiPhonesoriPodToucheswiththeoriginalsizedisplay(nottheiPhone5 sizedisplay)aredisplayedinadifferentmanner.Aferapictureistaken,themainimageview willslidedowntorevealalistofthumbnails.SelecLngathumbnailwillslidethemainimage viewbackinplacewiththedownloadedimage. ThethumbnailandmainimageviewscanbeswappedatanyLmebyswipingthescreenupor down. MainImageView Liveviewandcapturedimagesaredisplayedwithinthemainimageview. CapturedImages Imageswillbedisplayedinthemainimageviewinoneoftwoways,byselecLngathumbnailin thethumbnailssecLonorthroughtheAuto-Viewfeature.TheAuto-Viewfeatureisdescribedin moredepthintheAdvancedSejngssecLon. Itisimportanttonotethatthatimagesdisplayedinthemainviewarenotsavedbydefaultand aresimplybeingdisplayed.TosavetheimagetotheiOSdevice,refertotheCurrentImage ControlsorCardContentssecLon. Theimagemaybezoomedinto100%resoluLonbydoubletapping.Theimagecanthenbe pannedbydraggingafinger.Doubletappingagainwillreturntheviewtoitsoriginalstate. AsindicatedinthethumbnailssecLon,TIFFimagescannotbeviewed. ©CamRanger–PatentPending 9 DependingontheamountofmemoryinyouriPad,iPhone,oriPodtouch,certainlargerimage filescannotbeviewed.Deviceswith1GBofmemory,suchasthe3rdor4thgeneraLoniPadand theiPhone5,willhavenolimitaLons.Deviceswith512MBofmemory,suchasthe2nd generaLoniPad,iPadMini,oriPhone4,canviewnearlyallimagesexceptfortheverylargest, suchasalargeJPGontheD800.Deviceswith128MB,suchasthe1stgeneraLoniPadandolder iPhonesandiPodTouches,willnotbeabletoviewlargeJPGsonmostcamerasormediumJPGs onsomecameras. Whenviewinganimage,afingerswipeontheimagetotheleforrightwilldisplaytheprevious ornextimagerespecLvely.BypressingtwofingersonanimageandrotaLng90degreeseither direcLon,theimagecanberotated. SLllimagesviewedwithinthemainviewcanbecorrectedaccordingtoanX-Ritecolor calibraLon.SeetheColorCalibra2onsecLonformoreinformaLon. LiveViewImages Inliveview,theimageisautomaLcallyupdatedasliveviewimagesstreamin.Theexactrateis verymuchdependentonWiFisignalstrengthandthecameraandiOSdevicespecs.However, assumingagoodconnecLon,liveviewframeratewillbeabout7–18fpsdependingonthe cameramodel. Duringliveviewtheimagemaybesingletappedtofocusatthatpoint,alsoknownas performinga“touchfocus.”NotethatforCanoncameras,theouteredgesoftheimagecannot befocusedon.Doubletappingwillzoominanddoubletappingagainreturnstoregularsize. AliveviewhistogrammaybetoggledonorofffromtheDatatabasdescribedintheAdvanced DatasecLon.Togglingthehistogramonwillgenerateahistogramforeachliveviewframe; however,atthecostofadecreasedframerate.Togglethehistogramofftomaximizetheframe rate. Canoncamerascandisplaytheliveviewimageonthecameraaswellasallowphysically triggeringimagesbypressingthecamera’sliveviewbuOona3erstarLngitontheCamRanger app.NikoncamerasdonotallowanycontrolofthephysicalcamerawhileliveviewisacLve. AdvancedTabs TherearefourtabsprovidingadvancedinformaLonorcontrols:Data,Focus,Timer,andHDR. (TheiPhonedisplayhasafifhtabtoincorporatetheAdvancedSejngsbuOon.)AddiLonal TripodorStackShottabsarealsovisiblewhenthoseaccessoriesareconnected. ©CamRanger–PatentPending 10 DataTab ThedatatabshowsanRGBhistogramandmeta-dataassociatedwiththeimageinthemain imageview.Thefollowingmeta-dataisprovided: • ShuOerSpeed • Aperture • MegaPixels(Notethisisnotfilesize,butimageresoluLon) • ISO • MeteringMode • ExposureCompensaLonValue Withinliveviewthedatatabwillsimplyinformtheuserthatliveviewisonandprovideatoggle switchtotogglethedisplayofthehistogram.Thehistogramisupdatedinreal-Lme,butatthe costofslowingdowntheframerate. FocusTab Thefocustabisonlyenabledduringliveviewandprovidesadvancedfocusingcontrols. • FocusAdjust o TherearetwosetsofbuOonstomovethelens’focalplanenearerorfurther fromthecamera. o EachsethasthreebuOonswithdifferentsizedarrowstospecifyalarge,medium, orsmallstepinfocus. ©CamRanger–PatentPending 11 • o TapthebuOontomovethefocusbyasingleincrement,holdingdownthebuOon willhavenoaffect. FocusStacking o FocusstackingisaprocessoftakingmulLplecaptureswithslightchangesin focusandthenpostprocessingthemtoenhancethedepthoffield.Thiscontrol allowstheusertosettheincrementalfocusstepsizebetweenineachshotand thenumberofshotstotake.Eachfocusstepwillmovethefocalplanefurther fromthecamera.Sotheuserwillwanttosetthefocustothenearestplane desiredtobeinfocusandstartthestackingprocessfromthere.Iftoofew capturesweretaken,theprocesscanberestartedfromwheretheiniLalstacking ended.Asgeneralrule,largestepsizesaregoodforlandscapes,mediumfor mostmacrowork,andsmallforhighlymagnifiedmacroscenesand/orlowf-stop values.Note:thepostprocessingisnotdonewithintheCamRangerapp. TimerTab TheLmertaballowstheuseoftheCamRangerasanintervalometeraswellasspecifying exposureLmeswhenthecameraisinbulbmode. • TimeLapse o TheentryfieldsareusedtospecifytheiniLaldelaybeforethefirstshot,the numberofshotstotake,andthedelayinbetweeneachshot. o Aferconfiguringthesejngs,pressthe“Start”buOontobeginthe intervalometerprocess. o TheintervalometercommandsarestoredontheCamRangerdeviceandtheiOS devicedoesnotneedtoremainonorconnected. o The“ShotDelay”shouldnotbeusedforprecisionLming,parLcularlywhenthe delayisonlyafewsecondsorless. o CancelingLmelapse:Theintervalometernowprovidesacountdownof esLmatedLmetocompleLonaswellastheabilitytocanceltheintervalometer. HDRTab The“HDR”,orAdvancedBrackeLng,tabcanbeusedtogenerateaseriesofphotoswithvarying exposures. • AdvancedBrackeLngisonlyenabledwhenthecameraisinManualmode. • ThePropertyfieldspecifiesthecamerapropertytobevaried.TherearethreeopLons, ShuOerSpeed,Aperture,andISO. • TheIniLalDelayfieldspecifiestheamountofdelay,ifany,totakebeforebeginningthe brackeLngsequence. • TheiniLalvaluefortheselectedpropertyissetwiththeStartValuefield. • ThetotalnumberofimagestocaptureisspecifiedbytheNumberofShotsfield. • ThepossibleStepSizevaluesareupto3stopandspecifythehowmanystopstovary theexposurebetweeneachcapture. o Typicallythestepsizevaluesareinincrementsof1/3stops.However,thiscan varybasedonthecamerasejngs.Forexampleifthecameraisconfiguredto onlyallowISOvaluescorrespondingtofullstops,thenthestepsizeincrement willbe1stop. ©CamRanger–PatentPending 13 • • • • • • • • ThevalidvaluesfortheNumberofShotsareautomaLcallydeterminedbasedonthe valuesspecifiedforStartValueandStepSize.Forexampleastepsizeof1/3stopswill allowmoreshotsthanastepsizeof3stops. ThestarLngpointofthebracketissetwithinthesejngsandcanbeginattheshadows (lowestexposure),mid-point,orhighlights(highestexposure).IfthestarLngpointisset tomid-point,theresulLngsequencewillstartatthelowestexposurebutwiththe iniLallysetvalueasthemid-point.SeetheAdvancedSe8ngssecLonformore informaLononsejngtheHDRstartpoint. AferconfiguraLon,pressthe“Start”buOontobeginthebrackeLngprocess. ThebrackeLngcommandsarestoredontheCamRangerdeviceandtheiOSdevicedoes notneedtoremainonorconnected. DuringtheHDRprocess,acompleLonprogressbarwillbeshownaswellasthe opportunitytocancelthesequence. AfertheHDRprocessiscomplete,thepropertybeingadjustedwillbesettotheStart Value. Ifthecameraissettobulbmodeandbulbshotsaresupported,abulbHDRsequence canbeperformed. o TheStartValuefieldwillbeusedtoenterinanumberofmillisecondsforthe startvalue,correspondingtothelengthofLmetheshuOerwillbeopen. o TheminimumpermiOedshuOerduraLonis100milliseconds.Thenumberof shotswillautomaLcallyupdatetopreventthis100millisecondminimumfrom beingexceeded. Note:thepostprocessingisnotdonewithintheCamRangerapp. TripodTab WhentheCamRangerPTHubandMP-360(MP101,Bescor,orHague)areinusewiththe CamRanger,anaddiLonaltapwilldisplayfortripodcontrol.RefertotheCamRangerPTHuband TripodsecLonofthisdocument,onpage35,formoredetails. DisabledproperLesareindicatedwithadarkerbuOonbackground. NikonConnec5onMode NikoncamerasallowconnecLonsintwodifferentmodes:“PC”and“Camera”.(Seethe AdvancedSe8ngssecLonforhowtochangebetweenthemodes.)ThekeydifferenceisthatPC modeallowstheCamRangerusertoadjustproperLesthatarecontrolledviaaphysicalswitch ordialonthecamera,whichareotherwisedisabledinCameramode.However,inPCmodeno propertychangesdonephysicallytothecamerawillberecognizedandanychangesmade throughCamRangerwillbelostaferdisconnecLng.PCmodealsopreventstriggeringimages fromthecameraitself,andtheCamRangerappmustbesettoCameramodetoallowphysically triggeringfromthecamera.ItshouldalsobenotedthattheconnecLonmodecannotbe changedwhileliveviewisacLve. ExposureCompensa5on&Bracke5ng PressingthebrackeLngbuOonwilldisplaythefollowingcontrol: PressingthearrowsatthetoprightandlefmovestheexposurecompensaLon.Holdingdown thearrowwillmovetheexposurecompensaLontoitsrespecLvelimit.ThetwobuOonsatthe boOommiddlecontrolthebracketamount.PressingthearrowspoinLnginwillreducethe brackeLngamount,whilepressingthearrowspointoutwardwillincreasethebrackeLng amount. ThebrackeLngisnotsetunLlthe“Set”buOonispressed.The“Close”buOonwilldismissthe dialog.Pressing“Close”withoutpressing“Set”willeffecLvelycancelanyadjustmentsmade. ©CamRanger–PatentPending 15 CameraAc0ons • • • • Capture o The“Capture”buOoniniLatesthecameratrigger.Theexactcamerabehavioris dependentonthecameraandcameraproperLes,mostimportantlythecapture mode. o Formostcapturemodes,suchassingle,Lmer,orquietthebuOonperformsthe imagecaptureasexpected.Itshouldbenotedthatforsomecameras,advanced modessuchasremoteorLmerwillbehaveassinglecapturemode. o ConLnuouscapturemodediffersbetweenNikonandCanon. ▪ Nikon:AferselecLngaconLnuousdrivemodeapickerisdisplayed allowingtheusertoselectthenumberofimagestocapture.Whenthe CapturebuOonispressed,thatnumberofimageswillbecaptured. ▪ Canon:WheninaconLnuousmode,pressingandholdingtheCapture buOonbehavesinthesamewayaspushingthephysicaltriggeronthe camera. o Itisnotedthattherecanbeaveryslightlagbetweenthepressingofthe “Capture”buOonandtheimagecapture.Thedelaycanbemorepronounced whileliveviewisacLve.ForLmecriLcalapplicaLons,aremotetrigger,suchasan RFtrigger,canbeusedincombinaLonwiththeCamRanger.
