2012-13 YEAR IN REVIEW
2012-13
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
WHO VISITS THE SQUARE?
Dear Supporters and Friends of Pioneer Courthouse Square,
This past year as we approached the 30th birthday of Portland’s beloved Living Room,
the Board of Trustees for Pioneer Courthouse Square undertook significant initiatives to
assure the health and vitality of the Square for the next generation.
We dedicated time and private dollars to evaluate the Square’s physical condition. We
asked experts to inspect the Square from top to bottom. They found evidence of what
was long suspected: The waterproof membrane that lies beneath the plaza and prevents
rain from entering the offices and interior spaces below has failed and must be replaced.
They also discovered broken bricks and damaged skylights, corroded beams, faulty
plumbing and mechanical systems. We determined that Pioneer Courthouse Square
needs a total of more than $10 million in critical repairs.
We also took care to build upon the Square’s strong tradition of innovative programming
by bringing Portlanders together for “Singin’ in the Square,” our first annual spring community-wide sing-a-long.

FESTIVAL OF FLOWERS
EVENTS AT THE SQUARE
CREATING, CONNECTING A VIBRANT DOWNTOWN
JUNE
At the center of downtown Portland, Pioneer Courthouse Square reflects the energy of the city and a unique sense
of community. Working with other public and private partners, including Portland Mall Management, the Square
helped host a series of events this past year, including The March Fourth Marching Band; Summer Sand on the Mall
and colorful Festival of Flowers installations that visually link the core blocks of Downtown.
FESTIVAL OF FLOWERS
Festival of Flowers “inked” the Square with
a giant heart tattoo designed by Lango
Hansen Landscape Architects composed
of zinnias, marigolds, black mondo grass
and more. The design culminated at the
annual Flower Sale at the Square, where
community members purchased the
plants and flowers utilized in the design.
The remaining blossoms were donated
to Portland’s local chapter of Habitat for
Humanity.
